Separation of lymphocytes by electrophoresis under terrestrial conditions and at zero gravity

Electrophoretic mobility (EPM) of human peripheral lymphocytes were examined with the following objectives: To determine differences in EPM of lymphocytes under immuno-stimulated and immuno-suppressed states. To define the conditions necessary for the separation of lymphocyte sub-populations in normal and pathological conditions; To investigate immunological active, charged chemical groups on lymphocyte surfaces; and to investigate pathophysiological mechanisms of immune responsiveness, as reflected by alterations in EPM. To evaluate the potential of lymphocyte electrophoresis as: (1) a means of monitoring the immune status of kidney transplant recipients, (2) in predicting the outcome of kidney transplants, and (3) as a method for separation of lymphocyte sub-populations, the EPM was studied for unfractionated human peripheral lymphocytes and of populations enriched with T and "B" cells from normal adults, hemodialysis patients and kidney transplant recipients.

Variation of fan tone steadiness for several inflow conditions

An amplitude probability density function analysis technique for quantifying the degree of fan noise tone steadiness has been applied to data from a fan tested under a variety of inflow conditions. The test conditions included typical static operation, inflow control by a honeycomb/screen device and forward velocity in a wind tunnel simulating flight. The ratio of mean square sinusoidal-to-random signal content in the fundamental and second harmonic tones was found to vary by more than an order-of-magnitude. Some implications of these results concerning the nature of fan noise generation mechanisms are discussed.

The effect of ambient conditions on the emissions of an idling gas turbine

Changes in ambient conditions - pressure, temperature, and humidity - affect the exhaust emissions of a gas turbine engine. Such variations must be compensated for during engine certification. The results of a test program employing a JT8D-17 combustor are presented which quantize the effect of carefully controlled changes on unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and oxides of nitrogen at simulated idle operating conditions. Analytical results are given to explain the observed hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide behavior. It is shown that for a complete range of possible ambient variations, significant changes do occur in the amount of pollutants emitted by an idling gas turbine.

A parametric experimental study of the interference effects and the boundary-condition coefficient of slotted wind-tunnel walls

An experimental study of slotted upper and lower walls in a two-dimensional transonic wind tunnel with solid sidewalls is reported. Results are presented for several slot spacings and slot openness ratios. The experimental data are pressure measurements which were made on an airfoil model and on a sidewall near one of the slotted walls. The slotted-wall boundary-condition coefficient, which relates the pressure and streamline curvature near the wall, is determined from the wall pressure measurements. The measured wall-induced interference is correlated with the experimental values for the boundary-condition coefficient. This correlation is compared with theory.

Radiative flux penetration through a blown shock layer for Jupiter entry conditions

A study is made of the radiative blockage due to carbonaceous ablation injection for a probe entering the Jupiter atmosphere. This is accomplished by calculating the stagnation-point blockage factors for three entry trajectories that account for variations in probe configuration, atmospheric gas composition, and entry conditions. The radiative blockage within the relatively cool ablation layer is shown to be large and to be primarily dependent upon the absorption of the C2 and C3 species. The C3 absorption is significant, particularly when the new experimental data for C3 spectral absorption properties are used. Also, the stagnation-point radiative blockage factors are shown to correlate well in terms of the no-injection radiative heating rates for various entry conditions.

Determination of launch conditions for Spacelab satisfying the constraints of an absorption spectroscopy project

The conditions for absorption spectroscopy of the homosphere between 20 and 100 km from a space platform such as Spacelab are considered. Using nominal orbital elements, and taking launch data and time as parameters of the problem, formula were established that give the data necessary for determining the flight plan. The geographical coordinates of the tangential points of the solar illumination boundaries were also calculated. It is shown that the latitude coverage of the observation is closely related to launch conditions. Expressions for the pointing angles referred to an instantaneous terrestrial trihedron are given. These angular elements are needed to determine the real pointing angles in a reference system linked to Spacelab.

Observations of the microclimate of a lake under cold air advective conditions

The moderating effects of Lake Apopka, Florida, on downwind surface temperatures were evaluated under cold air advective conditions. Point temperature measurements north and south of the lake and data obtained from the NOAA satellite and a thermal scanner flown at 1.6 km, indicate that, under conditions of moderate winds (approximately 4m/sec), surface temperatures directly downwind may be higher than surrounding surface temperatures by as much as 5 C. With surface wind speed less than 1m/sec, no substantial temperature effects were observed. Results of this study are being used in land use planning, lake level control and in agriculture for selecting planting sites.

Operating condition and geometry effects on low-frequency afterburner combustion instability in a turbofan at altitude

Three afterburner configurations were tested in a low-bypass-ratio turbofan engine to determine the effect of various fuel distributions, inlet conditions, flameholder geometry, and fuel injection location on combustion instability. Tests were conducted at simulated flight conditions of Mach 0.75 and 1.3 at altitudes from 11,580 to 14,020 m (38,000 to 46,000 ft). In these tests combustion instability with frequency from 28 to 90 Hz and peak-to-peak pressure amplitude up to 46.5 percent of the afterburner inlet total pressure level was encountered. Combustion instability was suppressed in these tests by varying the fuel distribution in the afterburner.

Evaluation of Rankine cycle air conditioning system hardware by computer simulation

A computer program for simulating the performance of a variety of solar powered Rankine cycle air conditioning system components (RCACS) has been developed. The computer program models actual equipment by developing performance maps from manufacturers data and is capable of simulating off-design operation of the RCACS components. The program designed to be a subroutine of the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) Solar Energy System Analysis Computer Program 'SOLRAD', is a complete package suitable for use by an occasional computer user in developing performance maps of heating, ventilation and air conditioning components.

Boundary conditions for implicit solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in finite computational domains

The admissible boundary conditions for the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations are insufficient to determine completely the flow variables at grid points on the boundaries of a finite computational domain. A general method is presented in which the boundary conditions are supplemented by conservatively differenced forms of the flow equations. For implicit algorithms, the method provides a fully implicit coupling between boundary and interior points. Implicit boundary-point computation schemes are given for most types of flow boundary encountered in internal and external flow problems. Convergence to steady state is generally faster than with locally explicit boundary-point schemes.

Growth and formation of the foreleg skeleton inbred mice and rats under conditions of hypo-, normo- and hyperdynamia

Inbred 1 month old males of C57B 1/6, CBA, CC57Br/Mw interlinear hybrid mice of the first generation and rats of the August and Wistar lines were subjected to conditions of hypo-, normo- and hyperdynamia for 2 months. The statistically reliable dependence is shown between mechanical underloadings and overloadings and macro microscopic changes in the hind limb skeleton of animals. Genetic determination of growth and formation of the forelimb skeleton is established. Hereditary susceptibility and the phenomenon of heterosis are preserved under all motor conditions.

Changes in bone tissue under conditions of hypokinesia and in connection with age

X-ray micrography was used to study the optical density of the blackening of X-ray photographs made of five bones in 9 young people (ages 24 to 29) before and after strict bed rest for 16 to 37 days. Photometric studies of the X-ray film determined the relative concentration of bone structure before and after hypokinesia. In addition, the bone tissues of 25 cadavers of practically healthy individuals (aged 18 to 70) who died from injuries were investigated using X-ray structural analysis. Results show that the reaction to the state of hypokinesia is not uniform in different individuals and is quite often directly reversed. It was established that pronounced osteoporosis can be found in a relatively short time after conditions of hypokinesia in healthy young individuals. Results show that the stabilization of the crystalline structure of hydroxyapatite, especially its crystal formation, is finished by the age of 20 to 25. From 25 to 60, the crystal lattice remains in stable condition but X-ray analysis shows a reduction in the hydroxyapatite density.

On the acoustic boundary condition in the presence of flow

The boundary condition on the acoustic perturbation velocity at an impermeable surface in a flow is considered for the cases in which the surface generates a sound field by vibration or is acoustically deformed by an incident sound field. It is shown that in general the condition is not equivalent to the requirement of continuity of acoustic particle displacement in the direction normal to the unperturbed surface.
