Resonance, particle trapping, and Landau damping in finite amplitude obliquely propagating waves

The equations of motion for a particle in resonance with a small finite amplitude wave are solved approximately, using secularity free perturbation theory. The wave propagates at an arbitrary angle to a uniform background magnetic field in an infinite collisionless plasma. The wave fields include a longitudinal electrostatic component and elliptically polarized transverse electric and magnetic components. The trajectories of trapped and resonant untrapped particles are described, for each of the possible wave-particle resonances. These trajectories are used to construct an estimate of the nonlinear time dependent Landau damping rate of the wave.

Experimental damping-in-pitch of two slender cones at Mach 2 and incidences up to 30 deg

Oscillatory experiments were performed on two slender cones at Mach 2 and incidences up to 30 deg, using three different experimental arrangements. The damping-in-pitch was found to remain constant at incidences of up to a value approximately corresponding to the cone semi-angle, after which an almost linear increase with incidence was noted. The results obtained with the different techniques were in very good agreement up to an incidence of 15 deg and in some cases up to 25 deg.

Vibration and damping of laminated, composite-material plates including thickness-shear effects

An analytical investigation of sinusoidally forced vibration of laminated, anisotropic plates including bending-stretching coupling, thickness-shear flexibility, all three types of inertia effects, and material damping is presented. In the analysis the effects of thickness-shear deformation are considered by the use of a shear correction factor K, analogous to that used by Mindlin for homogeneous plates. Two entirely different approaches for calculating the thickness-shear factor for a laminate are presented. Numerical examples indicate that the value of K depends on the layer properties and the stacking sequence of the laminate.

Cooperation of charges in photosynthetic O2 evolution. II - Damping of flash yield oscillation, deactivation.

A quantitative analysis is made of a linear four-step model for photosynthetic molecular oxygen evolution in which each photochemical trapping center or an associated enzyme cycles through five oxidation states. Based on data obtained with isolated chloroplasts, a number of aspects were considered, including the two perturbations which damp the oscillation of the oxygen flash yield in a flash sequence. The kinetics and the mechanism of deactivation was another aspect investigated.

Attitude stability and performance of a dual-spin satellite with nutation damping.

Previous work of Anand and al. (1969) on the effect of aerodynamic torques on the steady-state behavior of a slowly spinning satellite without damping is extended to consideration of the effects of external torques and of a nutational damper on the transient and state motions of a satellite. Both the transient and steady-state behaviors are analyzed, and the attitude errors relative to a fixed star are established. The results indicate that, in the case of a particular satellite to be used for charting X-ray emitting sources in the celestial sphere, the effect of a nutational damper on the accuracy of the charting computations is significant.

On-line failure detection and damping measurement of aerospace structures by random decrement signatures

Random decrement signatures of structures vibrating in a random environment are studied through use of computer-generated and experimental data. Statistical properties obtained indicate that these signatures are stable in form and scale and hence, should have wide application in one-line failure detection and damping measurement. On-line procedures are described and equations for estimating record-length requirements to obtain signatures of a prescribed precision are given.

Plasma heating and acceleration due to Landau damping of hydromagnetic waves.

We analyze energy and momentum exchange associated with Landau damping of hydromagnetic waves, from a macroscopic viewpoint, and compare the conclusions with those of the resonant quasi-linear theory. It is found that the heating of protons and electrons is correctly given by the resonant theory, but that the momentum exchange is not correctly described by the resonant theory.

Governing equations for vibrating constrained-layer damping sandwich plates and beams.

A simple differential equation is derived to describe constrained-layer damping in nonsymmetric sandwich plates and beams composed of isotropic and homogeneous layers. The natural boundary conditions related to this equation are determined and some typical numerical results obtained by this equation are given. The equation is valid within the linear theories of elasticity and viscoelasticity in the absence of any constraints on thicknesses, positions, symmetries, and densities of the layers.

Performance of gas-lubricated cruciform-mounted tilting-pad journal bearings and a damped flexibly mounted spiral-groove thrust bearing

A test program was conducted to determine the performance characteristics of gas-lubricated cruciform-mounted tilting-pad journal bearings and a damped spiral-groove thrust bearing designed for the Brayton cycle rotating unit (BRU). Hydrostatic, hybrid (simultaneously hydrostatic and hydrodynamic), and hydrodynamic tests were conducted in argon gas at ambient pressure and temperature ranges representative of operation to the 10.5 kWe BRU power-generating level. Performance of the gas lubricated bearings is presented including hydrostatic gas flow rates, bearing clearances, bearing temperatures, and transient performance.

Automation of measurement of spatial damping parameters

A traveling wave unit was built to process measurement data on spatial damping parameters and to simplify statistical treatment of the results. Mean values of the loss coefficient, lengths of flexual waves, and wave propagation velocities for a given set of discrete functions were determined. Results are given in a table.

Active damping of unidimensional structures

The vibration characteristics of an unidimensional structure are discussed. The cases considered are: (1) a rigid pipe in which a wave propagates, (2) an infinite string along which a transverse wave propagates, (3) a rod along which longitudinal or torsional columns propagate, and (4) generally a unidimensional propagation of some one mode of vibrations which is nondegenerating with distance. Mathematical models are developed to show the performance of the mechanical devices under various damping conditions.

The effect of support flexibility and damping on the dynamic response of a single mass flexible rotor in elastic bearings

The dynamic unabalance response and transient motion of the single mass Jeffcott rotor in elastic bearings mounted on damped, flexible supports are discussed. A steady state analysis of the shaft and the bearing housing motion was made by assuming synchronous precession of the system. The conditions under which the support system would act as a dynamic vibration absorber at the rotor critical speed were studied. Plots of the rotor and support amplitudes, phase angles, and forces transmitted were evaluated by the computer and the performance curves were plotted by an automatic plotter unit. Curves are presented on the optimization of the support housing characteristics of attenuate the rotor synchronous unbalance response.

Effect of steady state coning angle and damping on whirl flutter stability

The main object of this investigation is to find the effect of the steady state coning angle and the damping at the flapping hinge of the blades on the whirl flutter stability boundary and thus to determine the role they can play in narrowing down the gap between theory and experiment. The governing equations of motion, with these two parameters included are derived by the classical Lagrangian approach using quasi-steady blade element theory for aerodynamic forces. A linearized analysis of these equations is applied to two of the wind tunnel models of the previous investigations. The results indicate that these parameters have a marked effect on stability boundary and they may even change the mode of flutter from backward whirl to forward whirl.

Evaluation of experimental methods for determining dynamic stiffness and damping of composite materials

Various methods potentially usable for determining dynamic stiffness and damping of composite materials are reviewed. Of these, the following most widely used techniques are singled out for more detailed discussion: free vibration, pulse propagation, and forced vibration response. To illustrate the usefulness and validity of dynamic property data, their application in dynamic analyses and comparison with measured structural response are described for the following composite-material structures: free-free sandwich beam with glass-epoxy facings, clamped-edge sandwich plate with similar facings, free-end sandwich conical shell with similar facings, and boron-epoxy free plate with layers arranged at various orientations.
