Apparent associations between bright galaxies and quasi-stellar objects.

A comparison of the spatial distribution of the 47 identified QSOs in the 3C and 3CR catalogs with the small-redshift galaxies contained in the Reference Catalog of Bright Galaxies shows that four QSOs with redshift in the range 0.5-1.4 are much closer to bright galaxies than would be expected if the 47 QSOs were distributed randomly. An extensive analysis of the distributions shows that the probability that this is a chance occurrence is less than 0.005. It is also shows that the radio-quiet QSO PHL 1226 lies very close to IC 1746 to which it appears to have a physical connection.

A design of an all digital FM discriminator.

This paper describes the design of an all digital FM discriminator. The system can be easily constructed using ordinary commercially available, digital IC's. In addition, the output SNR above threshold is computed. It is shown that the output noise consists of two terms: the first being the expected output gaussian noise having a parabolic power spectral density and the second being a quantization noise produced by the finite-level detection process used in the receiver.

Infrared objects in H II regions.

The discovery of 2-micron emission sources in NGC 2264, IC 2087, and M1-82, and of prominent infrared emission in Lk H-alpha 198 and V376 Cas is reported. Of the 25 objects found by scanning around the H II regions, less than half would appear to be late-type stars.

Self-protecting solid state isolated switch

Solid state switch has following capabilities: (1) Hybrid or IC from compatible with direct mounting on solar array substrate; (2) Continuous signal is not required to hold it in either on or off state; (3) Separate signal lines for on and off control; (4) Electrically isolated from input signals; and (5) Current surges will not cause switch failure.

Infrared emission by dust in NGC 1068 and three planetary nebulae

Photometric observations of NGC 1068, NGC 7027, IC 418, and BD + 30.3639 deg between 5 and 27 microns are reported. The observations are explained as thermal radiation from a form of dust that shows spectral features, but which has not yet been identified, and resembles that in the carbon-rich RV Tauri star AC Her. Arguments are deduced for its being a condensate from a carbon- and nitrogen-rich gas in an excited environment.

Kic size effect study on two high-strength steels using notched bend specimens

Five methods are used to calculate plane strain fracture toughness (K sub Q) values for bend-specimens of various sizes from two high-strength steels. None of the methods appeared to satisfactorily predict valid stress intensity factor (K sub IC) values from specimens of sizes well below that required by E399 standard tests.

Theory to test comparisons for selected aerospace multishell structures and their interfaces under thermomechanical loadings

Guidelines for structural shell analyses were obtained on the basis of theory-to-test comparisons made on two large-scale aerospace structures subject to thermomechanical loads. The first structural test was the cylindrical aluminum skin-stringer-ring construction of the S-IC forward skirt and S-II interstage. The second structural test included the truncated, cone-shaped, bonded honeycomb sandwich shell of the Spacecraft Lunar Module Adapter; the cylindrical bonded aluminum honeycomb sandwich construction of the Instrument Unit; and the skin-stringer construction with rings and intercostals of the S-IVB forward skirt. Analyses were made for loadings simulating the flight environment. Elementary shear lag theory was superimposed on shell analysis for interface junctions between stages to obtain favorable theory-to-test stress comparisons.

Search for continuous fluorescence in reflection nebulae

Photometric and spectrophotometric observations have been made of the reflection nebulae NGC 1435, NGC 2068, NGC 7023, and IC 1287 in an attempt to detect continuous fluorescence by dust grains. Several effects of importance for observations of such faint objects are discussed, including instrumental light scattering, a photographic effect, and a time-delay effect which can occur if the illuminating star is a spectrum variable. It is found that continuous fluorescence by interstellar grains is not likely to exist and that it cannot account for more than 10% of the total surface brightness of these reflection nebulae. No evidence of diffuse interstellar features is found in the spectra of these nebulae.

The X-ray morphology of the Perseus cluster of galaxies

Results are reported for a sounding-rocket measurement of the spatial distribution of the X-ray flux from the Perseus cluster of galaxies in the range from 0.5 to 4.5 keV. Two scans (N-S and E-W) were made along the line of galaxies extending from NGC 1275 to IC 310. A flux maximum is observed which is coincident with the location of NGC 1275, but the X-ray distribution is shown to exclude just a point source. More broadening is detected in the E-W direction, and a comparison with other X-ray and optical data indicates a complex structure for the cluster. A three-component model is proposed in which the total X-ray luminosity of the cluster may be a combination of contributions from a central point source (NGC 1275), a condensed disk-like region oriented edge-on along the line of galaxies, and a more symmetric region extending out to at least 1 deg.

A multichannel implantable telemetry system for flow, pressure, and ECG measurements

The design, principles of operation, and performance of an implantable miniaturized (48 cu cm in volume) multiplex telemetry system for simultaneous measurement of up to eight physiological parameters (including cardiovascular data) are described. Integrated circuits are used to reduce the size, complexity, and cost of fabrication. Power consumption is reduced using recently developed complementary MOS devices. PWM technique is selected as it is relatively easy to implement, lends itself to ICs, and provides an accurate means of transmitting data. The system is totally implantable within the chest of a test animal, with no wire penetrating through the skin. It is shown that the described system permits repeated measurement of the physiological effects of a variety of interventions in awake unanesthetized animals.
