A cross-frontier quest to reveal the origin of the Universe [Slides]

The Standard Model is one of the most well-tested theories in Particle Physics. The particle content was completed by the discovery of the Higgs boson. However, it does not explain the complete picture. This report discusses physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM Physics).

Rheology of dense fiber suspensions: Origin of yield stress, shear thinning, and normal stress differences

We use high-fidelity computational model of fiber suspension to investigate suspension rheology. We investigate the interplay between the hydrodynamic, noncontact attractive and repulsive, and interfiber contact interactions. The shear-thinning viscosity and finite yield stress obtained from the Immerse Boundary Method simulations align quantitatively with experimental findings from the literature. The study demonstrates that attractive interactions lead to both yield stress and shear thinning behavior in rigid fiber suspensions. This discovery holds significance as it contributes to the ongoing debate on the source of yield stress in fiber suspensions. The proposed model is used to quantify normal stresses in addition to shear thinning and yield stress.

A possible origin of the 10~15% polarization loss observed in RHIC beyond 100 GeV

This Tech. Note summarizes the outcomes of numerical simulation of strong resonance crossing using RHIC lattice, collision optics. The regular RHIC snake configuration is used, i.e. 2 snakes at their 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock locations. The working point used is Qx/Qy=28.685/29.673. These numerical experiments are performed with, in mind, the 15% polarization loss observed (measured?) during the ramp between 100 GeV and 255 GeV, and the possibility for the present simulations to point to possible cause(s). As a matter of fact, it has been stressed in many occasions that it should be checked with simulations how much the vertical orbit would need to be in order to affect polarization. The question has been addressed with SPINK in the past, yet it has to be addressed again, following in particular changes on the signs of vertical BPM mechanical offsets which happened in January 2010. A summary of RHIC polarization data over the years is given below, for the record.

SISGR: The regulation of carbon fixation in plant and green algae: Rubisco activase and the origin of heat inactivation of CO 2 assimilation

Rubisco activase (Rca) is a critical AAA+ ATPase protein complex that remodels and promotes the Rubisco enzyme, a key player in photosynthetic performance and carbon fixation. The assembly and function of the Rca protein complex are regulated by a range of factors, including subunit concentration, nucleotide-binding states, thermal conditions, metal-ion coordination, and post-translational modifications, such as phosphorylation. Despite its importance in photosynthesis, the detailed molecular mechanisms underlying the regulation of plant Rca and how it activates Rubisco remain elusive. This project aims to bridge this knowledge gap by integrating sophisticated enzymology tools with single-molecule methods and high-resolution electron microscopy to elucidate the structure and function of plant Rca. Through these multiple approaches, we have systematically investigated how the activity of plant Rca is impacted by various factors, such as phosphorylation and metal-ion coordination. The Rca complex assembly/disassembly dynamics were captured using anti-Brownian electrokinetic (ABEL) trap-based measurements, providing unprecedented insight into its structural flexibility and diverse assembly states. Furthermore, the structural analysis of Rca through electron crystallography and single-particle cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) reveals novel assembly states of the spinach Rca, providing insight into the mechanistic action for Rubisco remodeling. By combining cutting-edge tools and approaches, this work uncovers critical aspects of Rca’s regulation and assembly, paving the way for a deeper understanding of its role in photosynthetic efficiency and the potential for enhancing carbon fixation in crops.

Transient Testing of Nuclear Fuels Performed in the Original Operation of TREAT, Third Edition

TREAT core was upgraded at the end of the 1980s. The tests performed since about 1970 are summarized in considerable detail. Earlier tests are noted by their designated series and by some parameters that help to identify and distinguish each series from the others. The detailed summary descriptions are intended to help inform future researchers regarding the large, historical, empirical data base generated from that 35-year span during which hundreds of TREAT experiments were performed to investigate and demonstrate the transient behavior of a wide variety of nuclear fuels during severe off-normal and accident conditions -- using direct nuclear heating of the test samples. That empirical basis is foundational and valuable for guiding future qualification and safety evaluation of improved fuel designs and for future transient test planning and performance in TREAT. The second edition of this report added descriptions of the following test series: D, E, EOS, F, H, J, R, RX, and S. This third edition includes descriptions of an additional four test series: the HUT, HOP (& HUC), ORNL-TR, and PNL.

Renewable Hydrogen to Vehicle (RH2V) – Operation Verification and Risk Mitigation Studies: Original Agreement (Modification 0) (CRADA Final Report)

Toyota has announced plans for commercial fuel cell vehicle deployment in 2015. To fully realize the benefits of fuel cell vehicles (zero emission with no performance loss in terms of vehicle range and capability), hydrogen produced efficiently from renewable sources is necessary. Most of the hydrogen fueling stations today utilize hydrogen reformed from natural gas (produced onsite or delivered). This enables more stations to be deployed cost-effectively within a network. Producing and using cost-effective renewable hydrogen in fuel cell vehicles will enable realization of the full potential. A viable option of green hydrogen that reliably delivers on the full suite of benefits for Toyota fuel cell vehicle drivers is needed. NREL is in a unique position to analyze and optimize renewable hydrogen production scenarios using the Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF), a facility that is specifically designed to evaluate renewable energy integration technologies. As the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) primary national laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development, NREL has extensive knowledge of photovoltaic systems as well as alternative renewable technologies for efficient and reliable production of green hydrogen.
