Investigation, development and application of optimal output feedback theory. Volume 2: Development of an optimal, limited state feedback outer-loop digital flight control system for 3-D terminal area operation

This report contains the development of a digital outer-loop three dimensional radio navigation (3-D RNAV) flight control system for a small commercial jet transport. The outer-loop control system is designed using optimal stochastic limited state feedback techniques. Options investigated using the optimal limited state feedback approach include integrated versus hierarchical control loop designs, 20 samples per second versus 5 samples per second outer-loop operation and alternative Type 1 integration command errors. Command generator tracking techniques used in the digital control design enable the jet transport to automatically track arbitrary curved flight paths generated by waypoints. The performance of the design is demonstrated using detailed nonlinear aircraft simulations in the terminal area, frequency domain multi-input sigma plots, frequency domain single-input Bode plots and closed-loop poles. The response of the system to a severe wind shear during a landing approach is also presented.

A generalized multiple-input, multiple-output modal parameter estimation algorithm

A new method for experimental determination of the modal parameters of a structure is presented. The method allows for multiple input forces to be applied simultaneously, and for an arbitrary number of acceleration response measurements to be employed. These data are used to form the equations of motion for a damped linear elastic structure. The modal parameters are then obtained through an eigenvalue technique. In conjunction with the development of the equations, an extensive computer simulation study was performed. The results of the study show a marked improvement in the mode shape identification for closely-spaced modes as the number of applied forces is increased. Also demonstrated is the influence of noise on the method's ability to identify accurate modal parameters. Here again, an increase in the number of exciters leads to a significant improvement in the identified parameters.

Altering Flashlamp Output for Realistic Solar Simulation

Commercial glass optical filter corrects spectrum of xenon flashtubes used to test photovoltaic solar cells. Filter withstands thousands of flashes without perceptible alteration of passband characteristics. With filter, calibration errors reduced to less than 1 percent.

Keyboard With Voice Output

Voice synthesizer tells what key is about to be depressed. Verbal feedback useful for blind operators or where dim light prevents sighted operator from seeing keyboard. Also used where operator is busy observing other things while keying data into control system. Used as training aid for touch typing, and to train blind operators to use both standard and braille keyboards. Concept adapted to such equipment as typewriters, computers, calculators, telephones, cash registers, and on/off controls.

Peristaltic Pump With a Stable Output

Proposed design for peristaltic pump decreases flow-rate change that results from loss of elasticity. Instead of tubing, new pump uses special flexible liner as pumping channel. Liner molded as single piece of flexible plastic with helical internal channels. Three rollers move around inner wall of liner, compressing channels and forcing liquid before constrictions. As rollers move on, channels open elastically, drawing in liquid from inlet port and making it available when rollers return.

Mass input into and output from the meteoritic complex

The consequences which arise from the mutual collisions occurring between interplanetary meteoroids, the Poynting-Robertson (PR) effect and the radiation pressure ejection of small meteoroids are examined. The size distribution and flux of micrometeoroids at 1 AU are derived and the dependence of spatial density on distance from the sun is established. The following conclusions are made: (1) the lifetimes of meteoroids with masses approximately greater than 0.00001 g are dominated by catastrophic collisions; (2) after bering crushed by collisions, 70 to 85 percent of this mass will be in the form of zodiacal light particles (with masses in the range of 10 to the -10th g to 10 to the -5th g) which will in part be transported by the PR effect towards the sun where they will evaporate; (3) the 15 to 30 percent of the collisional fragments which have masses approximately less than 10 to the -10th g will, for the most part, be injected into hyperbolic orbits by radiation pressure.

Linewidth characteristics of Raman-shifted dye laser output at 720 and 940 nm

Existing DIAL systems for water vapor measurements in the troposphere operate at wavelengths near 720 nm. The use of stronger water vapor absorption lines in the range 930 to 960 nm will significantly improve DIAL measurements in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere where water vapor concentrations are low. The generation of light at 940 nm using a frequency doubled Nd:YAG pumped dye laser is inefficient due to the small absorption if infrared dyes at the pump wavelength. However, 940 nm generation utilizing stimulated Raman scattering of dye lasers is attractive because of a potentially high conversion efficiency plus the possibility of retaining the narrow linewidth available from some dye lasers. The Raman conversion efficiency and line broadening are presented for first Stokes operation at 720 and 940 nm using hydrogen and deuterium as the Raman media.

Multi-input multi-output system control for experimental aircraft

Results from the synthesis of control laws for an advanced short takeoff aircraft in a low-speed approach flight condition are given. Two of four candidate synthesis techniques are reported: direct eigenspace assignment and explicit model following via a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) formulation. A fundamental objective of this work is to obtain low-order feedback compensators, synthesized via the above techniques, and the judicious use of state estimation, thus allowing the use of a reasonable number of sensors for feedback.

Transferable Output ASCII Data (TOAD) file format description

Described is a format for writing ASCII data on a file to facilitate its transfer from one computer system to another. The TOAD format conforms to all ANSI FORTRAN 77 standards. There are two advantages in using the TOAD format. First, TOAD files are of the preferred type and record length to make them easy to edit, read from and write on magnetic tape, or transfer across communications networks. Secondly, application programs, using the TOAD format to write computational results, are more portable and the answer files easier to postprocess. TOAD utility software is listed in an appendix.
