Finite geometry effects of field-aligned currents

Results are presented of model calculations of the magnetic field produced by finite current regions that would be measured by a spaceborne magnetometer. Conditions were examined under which the infinite current sheet approximation can be applied to the calculation of the field-aligned current (FAC) density, using satellite magnetometer data. The accuracy of the three methods used for calculating the current sheet normal direction with respect to the spacecraft trajectory was assessed. It is shown that the model can be used to obtain the position and the orientation of the spacecraft trajectory through the FAC region.

Correlation between magnetic and electric field perturbations in the field-aligned current regions deduced from DE 2 observations

The satellite-observed high correlations between magnetic and electric field perturbations in the high-latitude field-aligned current regions are investigated by examining the dependence of the relationship between Delta-B and E on spatial scale, using the electric and magnetic field data obtained by DE 2 in the polar regions. The results are compared with the Pedersen conductivity inferred from the international reference ionosphere model and the Alfven wave velocity calculated from the in situ ion density and magnetic field measurements.

Inverting Image Data For Optical Testing And Alignment

Data from images produced by slightly incorrectly figured concave primary mirror in telescope processed into estimate of spherical aberration of mirror, by use of algorithm finding nonlinear least-squares best fit between actual images and synthetic images produced by multiparameter mathematical model of telescope optical system. Estimated spherical aberration, in turn, converted into estimate of deviation of reflector surface from nominal precise shape. Algorithm devised as part of effort to determine error in surface figure of primary mirror of Hubble space telescope, so corrective lens designed. Modified versions of algorithm also used to find optical errors in other components of telescope or of other optical systems, for purposes of testing, alignment, and/or correction.

High performance FORTRAN without templates: An alternative model for distribution and alignment

Language extensions of FORTRAN are being developed which permit the user to map data structures to the individual processors of distributed memory machines. These languages allow a programming style in which global data references are used. Current efforts are focussed on designing a common basis for such languages, the result of which is known as High Performance Fortran (HPF). One of the central debates in the HPF effort revolves around the concept of templates, introduced as an abstract index space to which data could be aligned. A model for the mapping of data which provides the functionality of High Performance Fortran distributions without the use of templates is presented.

Quasi-steady current sheet structures with field-aligned flow

The paper discusses the characteristics of quasi-steady plasma and field structures with field-aligned flow. Explicit solutions are developed for modeling the compressible flow around a plasmoid in the distant magnetotail. The expected and observed plasmoid signatures are found. Field signatures outside the plasmoid are typically those of encounters of traveling compression region: a north-south signature of Bz accompanied by an enhancement of Bx.

VLF wave growth from dispersive bursts of field-aligned electron fluxes

Large-amplitude electrostatic whistler waves near the lower hybrid frequency were observed by an auroral sounding rocket during substorm breakup. The measured wavelengths indicate that the emissions were electrostatic and resonant with electrons that had parallel energies of a few hundred electron volts. We propose that the intense emissions drew their energy from dispersive bursts of low-energy, field-aligned electron fluxes. The dispersive bursts are known to cause a brief, but intense instability that results in large-amplitude Langmuir emissions. The high-frequency emissions can rapidly form a plateau in the one-dimensional electron distribution. We show, however, that these distributions remain unstable to electrostatic whistler waves near the lower hybrid frequency. The amplitude and wavelength of the observed emissions were sufficient to accelerate the hydrogen ions with energies between about 50 eV and about 200 eV.

Parameterized study of the ionospheric modification associated with sun-aligned polar cap arcs

The local ionospheric modification that is due to a generalized steady state solar aligned (SA) arc structure is addressed. For a representative set of SA arc parameters which includes both convection and precipitation, emphasis is placed on the modification by SA polar cap arcs upon the F region electron density and the height integrated conductivity. At low fluxes and low characteristic energies, SA polar cap arcs have the most pronounced relative effect at F region altitudes in darkness for winter solar minimum conditions. The absolute enhancement in summer solar minimum and winter solar maximum is equivalent to that of winter solar minimum, but the higher ambient densities make the relative enhancement less. The TEC enhancement associated with an SA arc may be used to indicate the degree of plasma cross flow across the arc.

Modular removable precision mechanism for alignment of an FUV spatial heterodyne interferometer

Spaceflight optical instruments have two conflicting requirements. They need to be both rigid and lightweight. In addition, for interferometric far ultraviolet spectrometers, the requirements for precision positioning are more severe than for conventional spectrometers. To meet the challenge of lightweight optical instruments, a modular adjustment mechanism was developed to position two orthogonal axes of a universal three-axis gimbal support system with a positioning accuracy on the order of 10 arc seconds. The mechanism was designed as a self-contained assembly which can be removed after final alignment of a spacebound optical instrument to reduce its in-flight mass. To demonstrate the concept, a number of these assemblies were made and mounted on two of the positioning axes of a far ultraviolet spatial heterodyne interferometer. A shaft clamp was used on each positioning axis to retain the adjusted position. This paper describes the design of the mechanism and presents optical test results.

Interaction of field-aligned cold plasma flows with an equatorially-trapped hot plasma - Electrostatic shock formation

Effects of equatorially trapped hot plasma on the highly supersonic cold-plasma flow occurring during early stage plasmaspheric refilling are studied by means of numerical simulations. It is shown that the equatorially trapped hot ions set up a potential barrier for the cold ion beams and facilitate formation of electrostatic shocks by reflecting them from the equatorial region. Simulations with and without the hot plasma show different flow properties; the formation of electrostatic shocks occur only in the former case. The simulation with the hot plasma also reveals that the magnetic trapping in conjunction with the evolution of the electrostatic potential barrier produces ion velocity distribution functions consisting of a cold core and a hot ring in the perpendicular velocity. Such a distribution function provides a source of free energy for equatorial waves. The corresponding electron population is warm and field-aligned.

Overview of the MSTI 2 on-orbit alignment

The Miniature Sensor Technology Integration (MSTI) 2 Spacecraft is a small 3-axis stabilized spacecraft designed to track mid-range missiles and estimate their state vectors. In order to accurately estimate the target state vector, the MSTI 2 spacecraft must have highly accurate knowledge of its own attitude. Errors in its attitude knowledge arise primarily from the errors in its Attitude Control System (ACS) sensors. The ACS sensors on the spacecraft include a scanning Earth Sensor (ES), a Sun Sensor (SS), and two 2-axis gyros. The On-Orbit Alignment (OOA) generated an error map of the ES and estimated the biases of the SS and the misalignment of the gyros. This paper discusses some of the error sources, and the techniques used to reduce the effects of these errors. The payload carried by the MSTI2 spacecraft is a high fidelity camera, which was aimed at the target using gimballed mirrors. By aiming it at a celestial target, the payload was used as a high-accuracy single-axis attitude reference. This attitude reference was compared to the attitude reference of the ACS sensors, and the errors were attributed to the ACS sensors.
