Controller Hardware-in-the-Loop Evaluation of a Microgrid Controller for a Microgrid System with Multiple Grid-Forming Inverters: Preprint

This paper presents the laboratory evaluation of a commercial Microgrid Management System (MGMS) implemented in the real-world Bronzeville Microgrid which features a futuristic scenario with high renewable energy integration and the use of multiple Grid-Forming (GFM) inverters. The primary objective of the performance evaluation for the MGMS is to assess the MGMS's capability to dispatch GFM units, including a GFM PV unit and two GFM battery units, to maintain the system stability and ensure economic operation, thus guaranteeing the microgrid's resilience during prolonged outages and dynamic events. The laboratory controller hardware-in-the-loop provides realistic testing environment through detailed electromagnetic transient modeling of the microgrid system, hardware MGMS, and standard communication protocols (DNP3). The CHIL evaluation shows how the MGMS effectively manages the GFM inverters, highlighting its performance in maintaining stability, reliability, and survivability in a microgrid environment with a high penetration of renewable energy sources.

Nanoscale Control of Intrinsic Magnetic Topological Insulator MnBi 2 Te 4 Using Molecular Beam Epitaxy: Implications for Defect Control

Intrinsic magnetic topological insulators have emerged as a promising platform to study the interplay between the topological surface states and ferromagnetism. This unique interplay can give rise to a variety of exotic quantum phenomena, including the quantum anomalous Hall effect and axion insulating states. Here, in this study, utilizing molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), we present a comprehensive study of the growth of MnBi 2 Te 4 thin films on Si (111), epitaxial graphene, and highly ordered pyrolytic graphite substrates. By combining a suite of in situ characterization techniques, we obtain critical insights into the nanoscale control of MnBi 2 Te 4 epitaxial growth. First, we extract the free energy landscape for the epitaxial relationship as a function of the in-plane angular distribution. Then, by employing an optimized layer-by-layer growth, we determine the chemical potential and Dirac point of the thin film at different thicknesses and how this quantity is manifested by the dopant compensation from different antisite defects. Overall, these results establish a foundation for understanding the growth kinetics of MnBi 2 Te 4 and pave the way for future applications of MBE-grown thin films in emerging topological quantum materials.

Transient Stability Analysis of Direct Droop-Controlled Grid-Forming Inverter with Current Clipping as Current Limiting Control

This paper investigates the transient stability of the direct droop-controlled grid-forming (GFM) inverter which employs the current clipping-based approach for overcurrent limitation. An equivalent circuit model of the direct-droop GFM inverter with current clipping is developed for this purpose. It is shown that during overcurrent conditions, the GFM inverter with current clipping acts as a voltage source with a virtual resistance behind the inverter filters. To compute the parameters of this virtual resistance an analytical expression is given in the paper. Then utilizing the developed circuit, a criteria to exit current limiting during post-fault conditions is given. The developed analytical approaches are then validated through electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation results in PSCAD software and finally concluding remarks are drawn.

Material Control and Accounting for Liquid-Fueled Molten Salt Reactors: Material Control and Holdup Considerations

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) will likely require license applicants for liquid-fueled molten salt reactors (MSRs) with circulating fuel to submit a nuclear material control and accounting (MC&A) plan or detailed MC&A program description for the facility. In liquid-fueled MSRs with special nuclear material (SNM) in bulk (i.e., not in discrete items) form and rapidly changing quantities due to fuel transmutation and depletion, using traditional nuclear material accounting methods with material balance evaluations is challenging. In reactors with changing inventories, these expected quantities of SNM must be calculated based on operational parameters. Reducing uncertainties on these expected quantities is challenging in the case of MSRs without decades of operational experience to verify and validate predictive computational codes. Moreover, many areas in MSRs are inaccessible because of high-temperature and high-radiation environments, making measurements challenging.

Application of Controller Area Network for Power Converter Network Monitoring and Control

This presentation explores the adaptation and implementation of CAN bus technology in a network of power converters, emphasizing its potential beyond automotive applications. In this system, multiple power converters can utilize the CAN bus to transmit diverse data types, each assigned specific message and node IDs. A central controller continuously monitors the status of each converter, ensuring efficient management and coordination of power distribution. Additionally, an individual CAN node is
