A Kalman filter approach to adaptive estimation of multispectral signatures

The signatures of remote sensing data from agricultural crops exhibit significant non-stationarity, so that the performance of fixed parameter classifiers degenerates with time and distance from the initial training data. A class of adaptive decision-directed classifiers are being developed, based on Kalman filter theory. Limited results to date on two data sets indicate approximately a 25 to 40% reduction in rates of misclassification.

Two effective feature selection criteria for multispectral remote sensing

Distance measures which are useful for feature selection are considered, giving attention to the divergence distance measure and the Jeffreys-Matusita (JM) distance. Experimental studies show that the JM-distance yields more reliable results than other distance measures. A number of questions which are not solved by the experiments are discussed. The investigation provides an explanation for previous observations that the JM-distance and a saturating transform of divergence are highly useful for feature selection in the multiclass case.

Adaptive procedures in multispectral pattern recognition

Two types of discrete adaptive procedures are proposed for updating statistical parameters such as the means and covariance matrices. These two types include nonweighted adaptive procedures and weighted adaptive procedures. It is believed that the use of the proposed procedures will enhance the performance accuracy of a pattern recognition system. The procedures discussed include an approach for a weighted mean vector adaptation.

A general solution for the registration of optical multispectral scanners

The paper documents a general theory for registration (mapping) of data sets gathered by optical scanners such as the ERTS satellite MSS and the Skylab S-192 MSS. This solution is generally applicable to scanners which have rotating optics. Navigation data and ground control points are used in a statistically weighted adjustment based on a mathematical model of the dynamics of the spacecraft and the scanner system. This adjustment is very similar to the well known photogrammetric adjustments used in aerial mapping. Actual tests have been completed on NASA aircraft 24 channel MSS data, and the results are very encouraging.

An interdisciplinary analysis of multispectral satellite data for selected cover types in the Colorado mountains, using automatic data processing techniques

The author has identified the following significant results. In the San Juan Mountains there exists a group of structural and topographic features which suggest a common origin. The relative positions of the San Juan Depression with the Silverton and Lake City Calderas indicate they are possibly on the edge of a large circular feature. Comparison with the 1:250,000 scale Durango Geologic Map reveals a series of radial and arcuate faults concentric with the major circular feature. Such a fracture pattern implies that the circular feature may represent the extent of a major domal uplift in the area. The uplift was very likely due to the sub-crustal emplacement of the parent magma of the San Juan volcanics and intrusives. The broad doming led to the formation of a zone of tensional ring fractures which acted as conduits of release for the magma and the eventual development of the various calderas. The ring fracturing was probably incomplete with hinging occurring in the southern and southwestern portions of the dome accounting for the lack of development of caldera structures in that portion of the area.

Feasibility of using Eastman Kodak type 3400 film for high altitude multispectral photography

A photographic test flight of the NASA RB-57F was conducted on March 25, 1972, over Houston and West Texas, to determine the suitability of Eastman Kodak type 3400 film as a replacement for type 2402 film in the Hasselblad cameras. An additional purpose was to test GAF film type 2914, a new black and white film similar to 2402, but with higher maximum gamma and greater dynamic range.

Multispectral scanner data processing over Sam Houston National Forest

The Edit 9 forest scene, a computer processing technique, and its capability to map timber types in the Sam Houston National Forest, are evaluated. Special efforts were made to evaluate existing computer processing techniques in mapping timber types using ERTS-1 and aircraft data, and to provide an opportunity to open up new research and development areas in forestry data.
