Alternative Power and Propulsion for Space Systems

What are the main sources of power and propulsion for space systems and what are their advantages, disadvantages, how do they work, and what are the politics behind them? The following topics will be analyzed solar panels, batteries, radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG), advanced Stirling radioscopic generator (ASRG), reactors, nuclear thermal rockets (NTP), thermionic experiment with conversion (TOPAZ), electrothermal plasma thruster (VASIMR), ion propulsion, and finally nuclear pulse propulsion. The production of Pu-238 is extremely controversial but a vital source of fuel for many of these space systems. Soral and Batteries are the most common and the least controversial forms of power used in space systems today. However, is ineffective for deep space exploration as they only function for up to four years without needing to be recharged. This is where nuclear systems come into play. Nuclear systems such as an RTG will “live” up to 88 years. For example, Voyager 1 is powered by an RTG It has been traveling since 1977 and has left out solar system in 2012 and has yet to run out of power. However, this type of technology (nuclear) has many hurtles it needs to jump through before advancements in can go much further.

GRIDDED RF GUN DESIGN FOR SRF LINAC APPLICATIONS

The thermionic gridded gun is described which gener-ates short electron bunches for further acceleration in a Nb3Sn conduction cooled SRF linac. The gun is built into the first cavity of the 250 keV injector [1] for the 20 kW, 10 MeV, 1.3 GHz CW conduction cooled one-cavity linac. The beam current is 2 mA. The RF gun design is presented as well as the results of perveance measure-ments, which are in a good agreement with the design parameters. The design of the RF resonator of the gun is presented also. The beam generated by the gun is matched to the injector to provide lack of current inter-ception in the SRF cavity.

LLNL FESP Theory Highlights: November 2024

This talk presented a refined understanding of plasma-facing thermionic emitter cathodes by examining the limitations of the conventional space charge-limited model, which overlooks ion trapping dynamics within the virtual cathode. While conventional theory distinguishes between temperature-limited and space charge-limited regimes based on electron current constraints, recent findings reveal that trapped ions can form a quasi-neutral "second plasma," expanding upstream and interacting with the primary plasma. These effects are amplified in non-planar geometries, such as cylindrical or spherical sheaths, where trapped ions create a positive feedback loop with the upstream plasma. To address these phenomena, a new "Aid-and-Compete" model was developed, offering insights into current enhancement and sheath mode transitions relevant for plasma devices, including emissive cathodes in electric propulsion, fusion applications, thin film deposition systems, and plasma diagnostics.

Role of On-Site Generation in Carbon Emissions and Utility Bill Savings under Different Electric Grid Scenarios

Energy-efficient and sustainable technologies are necessary to lower energy and carbon footprints. Many technologies are being pursued to meet the increasing energy demand in buildings. An attractive option is efficient utilization of available energy resources, including renewables, to support current and future building energy needs while targeting grid resiliency, energy, and environmental security at an affordable cost via on-site cogeneration-based approaches. This must include energy-efficient technologies with lower greenhouse gas emissions and optimized cost, performance, and reliability. This paper presents the economic and environmental benefits associated with power technologies such as thermionics and solid oxide fuel cells. Hybrid configurations consisting of heat pumps, power systems, and renewable photovoltaics in cogeneration and trigeneration modes of operation are presented. The role of such technologies in lowering CO2 emissions while improving energy resiliency and serving the needs of underprivileged communities is discussed. The key barriers of affordability and potential solutions for large-scale implementation of these promising technologies are reviewed. Case studies demonstrating the influence of power rating, electrical efficiency, design configuration, carbon dioxide intensity of the grid, and fuel on annual greenhouse gas emissions are presented for residential and commercial buildings.

Front-End Design for SiPM-Based Monolithic Neutron Double Scatter Imagers

Neutron double scatter imaging exploits the kinematics of neutron elastic scattering to enable emission imaging of neutron sources. Due to the relatively low coincidence detection efficiency of fast neutrons in organic scintillator arrays, imaging efficiency for double scatter cameras can also be low. One method to realize significant gains in neutron coincidence detection efficiency is to develop neutron double scatter detectors which employ monolithic blocks of organic scintillator, instrumented with photosensor arrays on multiple faces to enable 3D position and multi-interaction time pickoff. Silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) have several advantageous characteristics for this approach, including high photon detection efficiency (PDE), good single photon time resolution (SPTR), high gain that translates to single photon counting capabilities, and ability to be tiled into large arrays with high packing fraction and photosensitive area fill factor. However, they also have a tradeoff in high uncorrelated and correlated noise rates (dark counts from thermionic emissions and optical photon crosstalk generated during avalanche) which may complicate event positioning algorithms. We have evaluated the noise characteristics and SPTR of Hamamatsu S13360-6075 SiPMs with low noise, fast electronic readout for integration into a monolithic neutron scatter camera prototype. The sensors and electronic readout were implemented in a small-scale prototype detector in order to estimate expected noise performance for a monolithic neutron scatter camera and perform proof-of-concept measurements for scintillation photon counting and three-dimensional event positioning.

Over 600 V Lateral AlN-on-AlN Schottky Barrier Diodes with Ultra-Low Ideality Factor

Abstract This letter reports the demonstration of lateral AlN Schottky barrier diodes (SBDs) on single-crystal AlN substrates by metalorganic CVD (MOCVD) with an ultra-low ideality factor ( η ) of 1.65, a high Schottky barrier height of 1.94 eV, a breakdown voltage ( BV ) of 640 V, and a record high normalized BV by the anode-to-cathode distance. The device current was dominated by thermionic emission, while most previously reported AlN SBDs suffered from defect-induced current with higher η (>4). This work represents a significant step towards high-performance ultra-wide bandgap AlN-based high-voltage and high-power devices.

Distillation device supplies cesium vapor at constant pressure

Distillation apparatus in the form of a U tube supplies small amounts of pure cesium vapor at constant pressure to a thermionic converter. The upstream leg of the U tube is connected to a vacuum pump to withdraw noncondensable impurities, the bottom portion serves as a reservoir for the liquid cesium.

Application of the solid lubricant molybdenum disulfide by sputtering

Molybdenum disulfide lubricant film is deposited on two substrates, niobium and nickel-chromium alloys, by means of physical direct-current sputtering. The sputtering system uses a three-electrode /triode/ geometry - a thermionic cathode, an anode, and the target, all enclosed in a vacuum chamber.
