Corrective Action Decision Document/Corrective Action Plan for Corrective Action Units 101 and 102: Central and Western Pahute Mesa Nevada National Security Site, Nevada, Revision 2

This revision was prepared to document changes to the data-collection activities. Specifically, the drilling and completion of the wells have been revised, and enhancements to the surface geophysics measurements have been included. Corrective action is needed because underground radioactive contamination exists in these areas resulting from historic underground nuclear testing. The PM CAUs are located in the northwestern portion of the Nevada National Security Site and comprise 82 corrective action sites. A total of 85 underground nuclear detonations took place within the area covered by the PM CAUs between 1965 and 1992 and resulted in the release of radionuclides in the subsurface in the vicinity of the test cavities.

G EANT 4 atomic relaxation data for transfermium nuclei (Z = 101–104)

Advanced theoretical methods can accurately calculate various atomic observables and predict electronic structure. Still, systematic computations of the radiative and non-radiative transition probabilities and energies are missing for the actinides and all the transfermium elements. However, these compilations are needed for comprehensive Monte-Carlo simulations (such as GEANT4) of the radioactive decay of transfermium nuclei. These simulations can forma basis for data analysis of experiments, especially with complex detection setups. Investigation of the transfermium nuclei is crucial for understanding the nature of the nuclear force. In this study, simulations based on data from the Jena Atomic Calculator (JAC) and the data from the Evaluated Atomic Data Library (EADL) present in GEANT4 were found compatible for the three elements Ba(Z = 56), U(Z = 92), and Fm(Z = 100), thus, validating the JAC calculations. For Z> 100, we also found sound agreement between simulations that used data generated with JAC and experimental results involving No(Z = 102) and Rf(Z = 104) isotopes. In conclusion, these results demonstrate that JAC can produce reliable atomic data sets for transfermium elements, which will assist in analyzing nuclear-decay-spectroscopy experiments.

A Quantum Mechanical Study of Quartz (101) Interfacial Boundaries

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed on periodic and molecular models to explore the energetics of bonding modes at quartz–quartz interfaces, common grain contacts in sandstones. Four interface types were modeled: H 2 O-mediated, silanol H-bond mediated, O–O peroxide bonds, and siloxane bonds. Each type of interface may exist in the subsurface of the Earth, depending upon water activity, temperature, and pressure, as interfacial structures are stable within DFT molecular dynamics simulations up to 473 K. The results predict interfacial energies SiOSi > SiOOSi > SiOH-6H 2 O > 2SiOH, as expected based on similar bond strengths in other systems. The proposed SiOOSi interface is not generally accounted for in chemomechanical models but could be important in sandstones at depth in the Earth. The implications for intergrain fracturing and H2 generation are discussed.

Unraveling the CO Oxidation Mechanism over Highly Dispersed Pt Single Atom on Anatase TiO 2 (101)

Catalysts with noble metals deposited as single atoms on metal oxide supports have recently been studied extensively due to their maximized metal utilization and potential for performing difficult chemical conversions owing to their unique electronic properties. Understanding of the reaction mechanisms on supported single-metal atoms is still limited but is highly important for designing more efficient catalysts. In this study, we report the complexity of the CO oxidation reaction mechanism on Pt single atoms supported on anatase TiO 2 (Pt SA /a-TiO 2 ) by coupling density functional theory (DFT) calculations and microkinetic analysis with kinetic measurements, in situ/operando infrared, and X-ray absorption spectroscopies. Starting from the adsorbed Pt SA occupying an O vacancy induced by reductive pretreatment, we show that CO oxidation follows a complex mechanism consisting of initiation steps to reorganize the active site and multibranch reactive cycles, with the Pt SA /a-TiO 2 catalyst not returning to its initial configuration. The initiation step consists of CO and O 2 adsorption healing the O vacancy, followed by CO oxidation using gas-phase CO to form Pt(CO). The reactive cycle alternates O 2 adsorption and dissociation to oxidize the catalyst to Pt(O)(O)(CO) and branching pathways of competing Langmuir–Hinshelwood (LH)- or Eley–Rideal (ER)-type CO oxidation steps to reduce it again to Pt(CO). In situ/operando infrared experiments, including cryogenic CO adsorption and isotopic CO exchange, confirm the combined involvement of strongly adsorbed CO and gas-phase CO in an Eley–Rideal step along the reaction cycle. Microkinetic modeling shows that Pt single atoms are present in a mixture of Pt(CO), Pt(CO)(O 2 ), Pt(O)(CO)(O 2 ), and Pt(CO)(CO 3 ) structures as the main intermediates during steady-state CO oxidation, all having the C–O vibrational stretch close to the experimentally observed value of 2115 cm –1 . Microkinetic modeling also shows that the fractional orders of CO and O 2 measured experimentally originate from multiple steps with a high degree of rate control and not from a simple competitive adsorption. The results demonstrate the complex reaction pathways that even CO oxidation on a simple single-atom system can follow, providing mechanistic insights for designing efficient Pt-based single-atom catalysts. Here, we further show that microkinetic modeling results are sensitive to changes in energies of intermediate and transition states within errors of density functional theory, which can ultimately lead to incorrect conclusions regarding the reaction pathways and most abundant reaction intermediates if not accounted for by experiments.

Structure of the low-lying states in 99,101,103,105 Pd

In this work, the odd-mass 99-105 Pd nuclei were studied via 90-96 Zr( 12,13 C, xnγ) fusion/evaporation reactions. The beam was provided by the IFIN-HH Tandem accelerator at energies of approximately 50 MeV. Emitted gamma rays were detected by the hybrid multidetector system RoSphere. The structure of the low-lying excited states in 99-105 Pd and their gamma-decay pattern are discussed in the framework of the rigid triaxial rotor plus particle model, providing a reasonable description of the low-lying level energies, electromagnetic transition rates, and magnetic moments.

Contaminant Transport Parameters for the Groundwater Flow and Contaminant Transport Model of Corrective Action Units 101 and 102: Central and Western Pahute Mesa, Nye County, Nevada, Revision 1

This document presents a summary and framework of available transport data and other information directly relevant to the development of the groundwater transport model for Central and Western Pahute Mesa (PM) corrective action units (CAU). This model is referred to as the “PM CAU transport model” in this document. Central and Western PM are two areas of the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) that historically were used for underground nuclear testing. These nuclear tests resulted in groundwater contamination in the vicinity of the underground test areas. As a result, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Environmental Management (EM) Nevada Program is currently conducting a corrective action investigation (CAI) of the PM underground test areas. This work is a part of the Underground Test Area (UGTA) Activity in accordance with the Federal Facility Agreement and Consent Order (FFACO) (1996, as amended).

EV Retail Rate Design 101

Electric vehicle (EV) adoption has increased significantly over the past several years. More than 640,000 light-duty plug-in EVs were sold in the US in 2021, which was more than twice the number sold in 2020. Driven by existing state and federal financial incentives as well as increased choice in electric models, EVs are popular among car buyers and now account for more than 1-in-10 of all light- duty vehicles sold in the US. At the state-level, total California EV sales recently passed one million, while New York, Washington, and Florida each have more than 100,000 total EVs on the road.
