The 60 GHz IMPATT diode development

The objective is to develop 60 GHz IMPATT diodes suitable for communications applications. The performance goals of the 60 GHz IMPATT is 1W CW output power with a conversion efficiency of 15 percent and 10-year lifetime. The final design of the 60 GHz IMPATT structure evolved from computer simulations performed at the University of Michigan. The initial doping profile, involving a hybrid double-drift (HDD) design, was derived from a drift-diffusion model that used the static velocity-field characteristics for GaAs. Unfortunately, the model did not consider the effects of velocity undershoot and delay of the avalanche process due to energy relaxation. Consequently, the initial devices were oscillating at a much lower frequency than anticipated. With a revised simulation program that included the two effects given above, a second HDD profile was generated and was used as a basis for fabrication efforts. In the area of device fabrication, significant progress was made in epitaxial growth and characterization, wafer processing, and die assembly. The organo-metallic chemical vapor deposition (OMCVD) was used. Starting with a baseline X-Band IMPATT technology, appropriate processing steps were modified to satisfy the device requirements at V-Band. In terms of efficiency and reliability, the device requirements dictate a reduction in its series resistance and thermal resistance values. Qualitatively, researchers were able to reduce the diodes' series resistance by reducing the thickness of the N+ GaAs substrate used in its fabrication.

NASA 60 GHz intersatellite communication link definition study. Baseline document

The overall system and component concepts for a 60 GHz intersatellite communications link system (ICLS) are described. The ICLS was designed to augment the capabilities of the current Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS), providing a data rate capacity large enough to accommodate the expected rates for user satellites (USAT's) in the post-1995 timeframe. The use of 60 GHz for the anticipated successor to TDRSS, the Tracking and Data Acquisition System (TDAS), was selected because of current technology development that will enable multigigibit data rates. Additionally, the attenuation of the earth's atmosphere at 60 GHz means that there is virtually no possibility of terrestrially generated interference (intentional or accidental) or terrestrially based intercept. The ICLS includes the following functional areas: (1) the ICLS payload package on the GEO TDAS satellite that communicates simultaneously with up to five LEO USAT's; (2) the payload package on the USAT that communicates with the TDAS satellite; and (3) the crosslink payload package on the TDAS satellite that communicates with another TDAS satellite. Two methods of data relay on-board the TDAS spacecraft were addressed. One is a complete baseband system (demod and remod) with a bi-directional 2 Gbps data stream; the other is a channelized system wherein some of the channels are baseband and others are merely frequency translated before re-transmission. Descriptions of the TDAS antenna, transmitter, receiver, and mechanical designs are presented.

Central activity in 60 micron peakers

The authors present charge coupled device (CCD) imaging results of their sample of Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) galaxies with spectral energy distributions peaking at 60 microns (Vader et al 1988). The results support the author's suggestion that the activity in 60 micron peaking galaxies is centrally concentrated, and represents an early stage of dust-embedded nuclear activity. This activity is probably triggered by a recent interaction/merger event as indicated by their peculiar optical morphologies. The authors propose that 60 micron peakers are the precursors of SO's in the case of amorphous systems, and ellipticals in the case of interacting galaxies.

Vapor pressures and calculated heats of vaporization of concentrated nitric acid solutions in the composition range 71 to 89 percent nitrogen dioxide, 1 to 10 percent water, and in the temperature range 10 to 60 degrees C

Total vapor pressures were measured for 16 acid mixtures of the ternary system nitric acid, nitrogen dioxide, and water within the temperature range 10 degrees to 60 degrees Celsius, and with the composition range 71 to 89 weight percent nitric acid, 7 to 20 weight percent nitrogen dioxide, and 1 to 10 weight percent water. Heats of vaporization were calculated from the vapor pressure measurements for each sample for the temperatures 25, 40, and 60 degrees Celsius. The ullage of the apparatus used for the measurements was 0.46. Ternary diagrams showing isobars as a function of composition of the system were constructed from experimental and interpolated data for the temperatures 25, 40, 45, and 60 degrees C and are presented herein.

Tests of Two Full-Scale Propellers with Different Pitch Distributions, at Blade Angles up to 60 Degrees

Two 3-blade 10-foot propellers were operated in front of a liquid-cooled engine nacelle. The propellers differed only in pitch distribution; one had normal distribution (nearly constant pitch for a blade angle of 15 degrees at 0.75 radius), and the other had the pitch of the tip sections decreased with respect to that for the shank sections (blade angle of 35 degrees for nearly constant pitch distribution). Propeller blade angles at 0.75r from 15 degrees to sixty degrees, corresponding to design speeds up to 500 miles per hour, were investigated. Propeller blade angles at 0.75r from 15 degrees to 60 degrees, corresponding to design speeds up to 500 miles per hour, were investigated. The results indicated that the propulsive efficiency at a blade angle of 60 degrees was about 9 percent less than the maximum value of 86 percent, which occurred at blade angle of about 30 degrees. The efficiency at a blade angle of 60 degrees was increased about 7 percent by correcting for the effect of a spinner and, at a blade angle of 30 degrees about 3 percent. The peak efficiencies for the propeller having the washed-out pitch distribution were slightly less than for the normal propeller but the take-off efficiency was generally higher.

Oxide Ceramic Films Grown on 60 Nitinol for NASA and Department of Defense Applications

Both the NASA Glenn Research Center and the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC) have worked to develop oxide ceramic films grown on 60 nitinol (60-wt% nickel and 40-wt% titanium) to decrease friction and increase wear resistance under unlubricated conditions. In general, oxide and nonoxide ceramic films have unique capabilities as mechanical-, chemical-, and thermal-barrier materials in diverse applications, including high-temperature bearings and gas bearings requiring low friction, wear resistance, and chemical stability. All oxide ceramic films grown on 60 nitinol were furnished by ARDEC, and materials and surface characterization and tribological experiments were conducted at Glenn.

Gender-related Changes in Dorsal Hand and Foot Vein Function Following 60 Days of Head Down Bed Rest

It is well known that female astronauts are more likely to experience post-flight orthostatic hypotension and presyncope compared to male astronauts. It has been suggested that the disproportionally higher incidence of presyncope (83% of female vs. 20% male crewmembers) may be due to sex-related differences in vascular function between the upper and lower limbs. However, much of this evidence is specific to changes in resistance vessels. Given that more than 70% of the circulating blood volume resides in compliance vessels, it is conceivable that even small changes in venous function may contribute to post-flight orthostatic hypotension. In spite of this, little is currently known regarding the influence of microgravity exposure on venous function between males and females. PURPOSE: To determine the influence of 60 days of HDBR on dorsal foot and hand vein function between healthy males (M) and females (F). METHODS: Using 2-D ultrasound, dorsal hand and foot vein diameter responses to intravenous infusions phenylephrine (PE), acetylcholine (ACh), and nitroglycerine (NTG) were determined in 26 adults; 10 females (age:37 +/- 2 yr ) and 16 males (age:34 +/- 2 yr ). Changes in venous function were calculated as the difference between diameter at baseline and following each venoactive drug. Differences in venous function between limb and sexes across HDBR were determined using mixed-effects linear regression. RESULTS: In response to 60 days of HDBR, the change in venousconstrictor response to PE in the dorsal hand veins was not significantly different between M and F. Interestingly, the change in constrictor response in the dorsal foot veins (compared to pre HDBR) was approximately 30% greater in the F, whereas the constrictor response was approximately 45% less in the M (p=0.026). HDBR had no influence on the change in dilator response to ACh, or NTG between M and F and between vascular beds. CONCLUSION: These results demonstrate that 60 days of HDBR contributes to sex-related differences in venous function. Importantly, the changes are specific to dorsal foot veins and do not appear to be related to changes in endothelial or smooth muscle function. Previous data from our laboratory indicate that females have an impaired sympathetic response following HDBR. However, the results from the current investigation imply that F maintain the ability to respond to sympathetic stimulation but may not be able to adequately activate a proper response following HDBR.

60 Days of Head-down Bedrest Differentially Alters Venous Function in Lower and Upper Body Between Healthy Men and Women

The incidence of orthostatic intolerance after space flight is disproportionally higher in female compared to male crewmembers (83% vs. 20%). Experimental and human data suggest that the loss of orthostatic tolerance is due, at least in part, to microgravity-induced changes in venous compliance and that these changes are specific to the lower body. It is unknown however, whether the changes in venous compliance are different between males and females after space flight, and whether this is related to the disparity in orthostatic intolerance between the sexes. Using 6deg head-down bed rest (BR) as a model of space flight, we tested the following hypotheses; 1) females, compared to males, would experience a greater increase in venous compliance in dorsal foot veins as an effect of BR and 2) no differences in venous compliance would be found in dorsal hand veins between sexes and across BR days. Using 2-D ultrasound, dorsal hand (DHV) and foot vein (DFV) responses (diameter; expressed as sq mm) to 40 mmHg of congestion pressure (compliance) and to intravenous infusion of phenylephrine (PE; 3160ng/min) were determined in 10 females and 16 males before and after 60 days of BR. The relation between changes in vein diameter (in response to pressure and PE), sex, limb, and BR days were determined using a mixed-effect linear regression. It was found that after 60 days of BR, DFV dilator response to pressure was significantly greater in females and significantly less in males compared to pre-BR. As expected, there were no differences in DHV dilator response between sexes nor was there a significant difference between pre and post measures within groups. Notably, the venoconstrictor response to infusions of PE in the DHV and DFV where similar between sexes and across BR days. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that after 60 days of BR, dorsal foot veins are more compliant in women and less compliant in men. Moreover, the changes in lower body vein compliance in females do not appear to be due to changes in vasoconstrictor tone as their response to PE was preserved and similar to that in males. Taken together these data suggest that the higher incidence of orthostatic intolerance in females after space flight is due to increased venous compliance in the lower body which could translate to lower venous filling pressures and a reduced stroke volume.

Addressing Machining Issues for the Intermetallic Compound 60-NITINOL

60-NITINOL (60 wt.% Ni - 40 wt.% Ti) is being studied as a material for advanced aerospace components. Frequent wire breakage during electrical-discharge machining of this material was investigated. The studied material was fabricated from hot isostatically pressed 60-NITINOL powder obtained through a commercial source. Bulk chemical analysis of the material showed that the composition was nominal but had relatively high levels of certain impurities, including Al and O. It was later determined that Al2O3 particles had contaminated the material during the hot isostatic pressing procedure and that these particles were the most likely cause of the wire breakage. The results of this investigation highlight the importance of material cleanliness to its further implementation.

Electrochemical, Polarization, and Crevice Corrosion Testing of Nitinol 60, A Supplement to the ECLSS Sustaining Materials Compatibility Study

In earlier trials, electrochemical test results were presented for six noble metals evaluated in test solutions representative of waste liquids processed in the Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Subsequently, a seventh metal, Nitinol 60, was added for evaluation and subjected to the same test routines, data analysis, and theoretical methodologies. The previous six test metals included three titanium grades, (commercially pure, 6Al-4V alloy and 6Al-4V low interstitial alloy), two nickel-chromium alloys (Inconel(RegisteredTrademark) 625 and Hastelloy(RegisteredTrademark) C276), and one high-tier stainless steel (Cronidur(RegisteredTrademark) 30). The three titanium alloys gave the best results of all the metals, indicating superior corrosive nobility and galvanic protection properties. For this current effort, the results have clearly shown that Nitinol 60 is almost as noble as titanium, being very corrosion-resistant and galvanically compatible with the other six metals electrochemically and during long-term exposure. is also quite noble as it is very corrosion resistant and galvanically compatible with the other six metals from both an electrochemical perspective and long-term crevice corrosion scenario. This was clearly demonstrated utilizing the same techniques for linear, Tafel and cyclic polarization, and galvanic coupling of the metal candidate as was done for the previous study. The high nobility and low corrosion susceptibility for Nitinol 60 appear to be intermediate to the nickel/chromium alloys and the titanium metals with indications that are more reflective of the titanium metals in terms of general corrosion and pitting behavior.

Promoted-Ignition Testing to Determine the Gaseous Oxygen Compatibility of the Intermetallic Compound 60-NITINOL

The flammability of 60-NITINOL (60 weight percentage Ni and 40 weight percentage Ti) in an oxygen-rich atmosphere is assessed. It is determined that 60-NITINOL burns readily in gaseous oxygen and would not be a good candidate for components exposed to oxygen-rich environments where there may be an ignition source. The results are the same whether the material is tested without heat treatment, after a solution treatment or after furnace annealing. These results provide guidance for materials selection of aerospace turbomachinery components.

A potent and durable malaria transmission-blocking vaccine designed from a single-component 60-copy Pfs230D1 nanoparticle

Malaria transmission-blocking vaccines (TBVs) reduce disease transmission by breaking the continuous cycle of infection between the human host and the mosquito vector. Domain 1 (D1) of Pfs230 is a leading TBV candidate and comprises the majority of transmission-reducing activity (TRA) elicited by Pfs230. Here we show that the fusion of Pfs230D1 to a 60-copy multimer of the catalytic domain of dihydrolipoyl acetyltransferase protein (E2p) results in a single-component nanoparticle composed of 60 copies of the fusion protein with high stability, homogeneity, and production yields. The nanoparticle presents a potent human transmission-blocking epitope within Pfs230D1, indicating the antigen is correctly oriented on the surface of the nanoparticle. Two vaccinations of New Zealand White rabbits with the Pfs230D1 nanoparticle elicited a potent and durable antibody response with high TRA when formulated in two distinct adjuvants suitable for translation to human use. This single-component nanoparticle vaccine may play a key role in malaria control and has the potential to improve production pipelines and the cost of manufacturing of a potent and durable TBV.

Construction of Photo‐Responsive Pd 2 L 4 ‐Type Nanocages based on Feringa's Second‐Generation Motor and Its Guest Binding Ability for C 60

Abstract We present the construction of a M 2 L 4 ‐type metal‐organic nanocage featuring four endohedral Feringa's motor motifs and its adaptive encapsulation towards a C 60 guest molecule. The structure of the cage, though complicated on the 1 H NMR spectrum due to the adoption of mixed ligands, was unambiguously characterized with a combination of ESI‐MS, 2D DOSY, 13 C NMR and particularly the SAXS technique. The molecular motor within the cage demonstrated similar photophysical properties to the uncoordinated one, indicating the motor's function was not compromised when it was anchored in such a confined nanospace. Furthermore, the nanocage showed good guest encapsulation ability towards C 60 , and a guest induced‐fit behavior of the cage was revealed based on the extensive SAXS analysis and molecular dynamics simulation. The adaptive motorized nanocage reported here represents one of the very few examples of integrating individual motors into a discrete nanoconfined system and offers prospects to achieve its non‐equilibrium functions.

A New Measurement of the 60 keV Emission from Am-241 Using Metallic Magnetic Calorimeters

Here, we report a new measurement of the 60 keV transition from 241 Am. It uses a metallic magnetic calorimeter gamma-ray detector calibrated in the region around 60 keV by four accurately known X-rays and gamma rays from the decay of 169 Yb. We determine an energy of 59,539.3 ± 0.3 (stat) ± 0.3 (syst) eV, which is 1.6 ± 0.4 eV lower than the current literature value of 59,540.9 ± 0.1 eV. We discuss the sources of this uncertainty and approaches to address them.

Effect of 60 Co Irradiation on Boehmite Dissolution in Caustic Solutions

Here, in this work, we examine how radiation impacts the dissolution behavior of boehmite by subjecting dry nanoparticles of different sizes to 60 Co γ radiation and subsequently analyzing their dissolution behavior in caustic solutions as a function of temperature. The measured kinetics show that irradiation with an amount 228.24 Mrad significantly slows the dissolution rate, particularly for smaller sizes at lower temperatures. Specifically, the temperature-dependent dissolution rates of irradiated 20 nm boehmite versus pristine material in 3 M NaOH solutions were several times lower (e.g., rate constant of 0.026 vs 0.075 h –1 at 60 °C), with an apparent activation energy 40 kJ mol –1 higher. Although various imaging techniques and X-ray diffraction measurements consistently revealed no obvious differences between pristine and irradiated samples, after irradiation significant binding energy shifts were detected in the X-ray photoelectron Spectroscopy peaks of Al 2p and O 1s, and a change in their relative intensities indicated a lower O/Al ratio. This suggests that γ-irradiation may stabilize boehmite particle surfaces by driving their chemistry and structure toward more stable aluminum oxide forms. This finding may help explain slower dissolution rates of boehmite in nuclear waste and may be useful for the development of more robust predictive models and effective strategies for waste processing.

Spherical Congeners of Polyaromatic Compounds Approaching C 20 - and C 60 -Fullerene-Type Structures

A series of three symmetric, hollow spherical, and shape-persistent molecular organic cages analogous to C 20 and C 60 were examined by computational modeling, analyzing structural elements, strain indicators, and physical properties relevant for potential applications. The compounds are covalent aromatic cages based on 1,3,5-substituted benzene nodes linked by paraphenylene or para-pyrenylene-connectors, with diameters varying from 2.3 to 4.2 nm. The apertures in the cage interior are varied by virtue of the cage type (C 20 - or C 60 -type cage) and the linear connectors placed between the C 6 H 3 -units. NBO and MESP analyses indicate the presence of electrophilic and nucleophilic sites in the molecular skeleton. In the cages with the phenylene-connectors, the HOMO−LUMO gaps are close to 4.0 eV. In the cage coated with an enlarged polyaromatic spacer (pyrene-unit), the gap is reduced by approximately 0.4 eV.

Simplified interconnection structure based on C 60 /SnO 2-x for all-perovskite tandem solar cells

The efficiencies of all-perovskite tandem devices are improving quickly. However, their complex interconnection layer (ICL) structures – with typically four or more layers deposited by different processes – limit their prospects for applications. Here, we report an ICL in all-perovskite tandem cells consisting merely of a fullerene layer and a SnO 2-x (0 60 layer is unintentionally n-doped by iodine ions from the perovskite and thus acts as an effective electron collecting layer. The SnO 2-x layer, formed by the incomplete oxidization of tin (x=1.76), has ambipolar carrier transport property enabled by the presence of a large density of Sn 2+ . The C 60 /SnO 1.76 ICL forms Ohmic contacts with both wide and narrow bandgap perovskite subcells with low contact resistivity. The ICL boosts the efficiencies of small-area tandem cells (5.9 mm 2 ) and large-area tandem cells (1.15 cm 2 ) to 24.4% and 22.2%, respectively. Lastly, the tandem cells remain 94% of its initial efficiency after continues 1-sun illumination for 1,000 hours.

Photoionization of endohedral molecules: N 2 @C 60

Calculations of the photoionization of the nitrogen $1σ_g$, $1σ_u$, and $2σ_g$, states of the N 2 @C 60 molecule are performed at the density functional theory (DFT) level taking full account of the molecular geometry of both N 2 and the C 60 . In this work, the results show that cross sections are sensitive to the parity of the final channels, with a complex interplay between the native $σ_u$ resonance in free N 2 and confinement resonances. A quite different behavior is obtained for the asymmetry parameters.
