Layering, interface and edge effects in multi-layered composite medium

Guided waves in a cross-ply laminated plate are studied. Because of the complexity of the exact dispersion equation that governs the wave propagation in a multi-layered fiber-reinforced plate, a stiffness method that can be applied to any number of layers is presented. It is shown that, for a sufficiently large number of layers, the plate can be modeled as a homogeneous anisotropic plate. Also studied is the reflection of guided waves from the edge of a multilayered plate. These results are quite different than in the case of a single homogeneous plate.

Bending and stretching finite element analysis of anisotropic viscoelastic composite plates

Finite element algorithms have been developed to analyze linear anisotropic viscoelastic plates, with or without holes, subjected to mechanical (bending, tension), temperature, and hygrothermal loadings. The analysis is based on Laplace transforms rather than direct time integrations in order to improve the accuracy of the results and save on extensive computational time and storage. The time dependent displacement fields in the transverse direction for the cross ply and angle ply laminates are calculated and the stacking sequence effects of the laminates are discussed in detail. Creep responses for the plates with or without a circular hole are also studied. The numerical results compare favorably with analytical solutions, i.e. within 1.8 percent for bending and 10(exp -3) 3 percent for tension. The tension results of the present method are compared with those using the direct time integration scheme.

Vibration and damping of laminated, composite-material plates including thickness-shear effects

An analytical investigation of sinusoidally forced vibration of laminated, anisotropic plates including bending-stretching coupling, thickness-shear flexibility, all three types of inertia effects, and material damping is presented. In the analysis the effects of thickness-shear deformation are considered by the use of a shear correction factor K, analogous to that used by Mindlin for homogeneous plates. Two entirely different approaches for calculating the thickness-shear factor for a laminate are presented. Numerical examples indicate that the value of K depends on the layer properties and the stacking sequence of the laminate.

Elastostatic stress analysis of orthotropic rectangular center-cracked plates

A mapping-collocation method was developed for the elastostatic stress analysis of finite, anisotropic plates with centrally located traction-free cracks. The method essentially consists of mapping the crack into the unit circle and satisfying the crack boundary conditions exactly with the help of Muskhelishvili's function extension concept. The conditions on the outer boundary are satisfied approximately by applying the method of least-squares boundary collocation. A parametric study of finite-plate stress intensity factors, employing this mapping-collocation method, is presented. It shows the effects of varying material properties, orientation angle, and crack-length-to-plate-width and plate-height-to-plate-width ratios for rectangular orthotropic plates under constant tensile and shear loads.

Buckling behavior of long symmetrically laminated plates subjected to combined loads

A parametric study of the buckling behavior of infinitely long symmetrically laminated anisotropic plates subjected to combined loadings is presented. The loading conditions considered are axial tension and compression, transverse tension and compression, and shear. Results obtained using a special purpose analysis, well suited for parametric studies are presented for clamped and simply supported plates. Moreover, results are presented for some common laminate constructions, and generic buckling design charts are presented for a wide range of parameters. The generic design charts are presented in terms of useful nondimensional parameters, and dependence of the nondimensional parameters on laminate fiber orientation, stacking sequence, and material properties is discussed. An important finding of the study is that the effects of anisotropy are much more pronounced in shear-loaded plates than in compression loaded plates. In addition, the effects of anisotropy on plates subjected to combined loadings are generally manifested as a phase shift of self-similar buckling interaction curves. A practical application of this phase shift is the buckling resistance of long plates can be improved by applying a shear loading with a specific orientation. In all cases considered, it is found that the buckling coefficients of infinitely long plates are independent of the bending stiffness ratio (D sub 11/D sub 22) sup 1/4.

Analysis of symmetric cross-ply laminated elastic plates using a higher-order theory. I - Stress and displacement

A simple theory for bending of composite anisotropic plates that are laminated symmetrically about their mid-plane is presented. This theory incorporates transverse shear deformation and transverse normal stress as well as the higher-order effects and fulfills the static conditions on the external boundary planes. Further on, by using Levy-type solutions considered in conjunction with the state space concept, the state of stress and displacement of rectangular plates for a variety of edge conditions is determined and the results are compared to their first-order shear deformation and classical counterparts, obtained by using the same state-space technique.

Buckling behavior of long symmetrically laminated plates subjected to compression, shear, and inplane bending loads

A parametric study of the buckling behavior of infinitely long symmetrically laminated anisotropic plates subjected to combined loadings are presented. The loading conditions considered are pure inplane bending, transverse tension and compression, and shear. Results obtained using a special purpose analysis are presented for clamped and simply supported plates. An important finding of the study is that the effects of anisotropy are much more pronounced in shear-loaded plates than in axial compression-loaded plates and plates loaded by pure inplane bending.

Impact of composite plates: Analysis of stresses and forces

The foreign object damage resistance of composite fan blades was studied. Edge impact stresses in an anisotropic plate were first calculated incorporating a constrained layer damping model. It is shown that a very thin damping layer can dramatically decrease the maximum normal impact stresses. A multilayer model of a composite plate is then presented which allows computation of the interlaminar normal and shear stresses. Results are presented for the stresses due to a line impact load normal to the plane of a composite plate. It is shown that significant interlaminar tensile stresses can develop during impact. A computer code was developed for this problem using the fast Fourier transform. A marker and cell computer code were also used to investigate the hydrodynamic impact of a fluid slug against a wall or turbine blade. Application of fluid modeling of bird impact is reviewed.

Three-dimensional solutions for the free vibrations and buckling of thermally stressed multilayered angle-ply composite plates

Analytic three-dimensional elasticity solutions are developed for the free vibration and buckling of thermally stressed rectangular multilayered angle-ply anisotropic plates which are assumed to have an antisymmetric lamination with respect to the middle plane. Sensitivity derivatives are evaluated and used to investigate the sensitivity of the vibration and buckling responses to variations in the different lamination and material parameters of the plate. A Duhamel-Neumann-type constitutive model is used, and the material properties are assumed to be independent of temperature. Numerical results are presented, showing the effects of variations in the material characteristics and fiber orientation of different layers, as well as the effect of initial thermal deformation on the vibrational and buckling responses of the plate.

A refined mixed shear flexible finite element for the nonlinear analysis of laminated plates

The present study is concerned with the development of a mixed shear flexible finite element with relaxed continuity for the geometrically linear and nonlinear analysis of laminated anisotropic plates. The formulation of the element is based on a refined higher-order theory. This theory satisfies the zero transverse shear stress boundary conditions on the top and bottom faces of the plate. Shear correction coefficients are not needed. The developed element consists of 11 degrees-of-freedom per node, taking into account three displacements, two rotations, and six moment resultants. An evaluation of the element is conducted with respect to the accuracy obtained in the bending of laminated anistropic rectangular plates with different lamination schemes, loadings, and boundary conditions.

Steady-state heat conduction in multilayered composite plates and shells

A study is made of a predictor-corrector procedure for the accurate determination of the temperature and heat flux distributions in thick multilayered composite plates and shells. A linear through-the-thickness temperature distribution is used in the predictor phase. The functional dependence of temperature on the thickness coordinate is then calculated a posteriori and used in the corrector phase. Extensive numerical results are presented for linear steady-state heat conduction problems, showing the effects of variation in the geometric and lamination parameters on the accuracy of the thermal response predictions of the predictor-corrector approach. Both antisymmetrically laminated anisotropic plates and multilayered orthotropic cylinders are considered. The solutions are assumed to be periodic in the surface coordinates. For each problem the standard of comparison is taken to be the analytic three-dimensional solution based on treating each layer as a homogeneous anisotropic medium. The potential of the predictor-corrector approach for predicting the thermal response of multilayered plates and shells with complicated geometry is discussed.

Finite Element and Plate Theory Modeling of Acoustic Emission Waveforms

A comparison was made between two approaches to predict acoustic emission waveforms in thin plates. A normal mode solution method for Mindlin plate theory was used to predict the response of the flexural plate mode to a point source, step-function load, applied on the plate surface. The second approach used a dynamic finite element method to model the problem using equations of motion based on exact linear elasticity. Calculations were made using properties for both isotropic (aluminum) and anisotropic (unidirectional graphite/epoxy composite) materials. For simulations of anisotropic plates, propagation along multiple directions was evaluated. In general, agreement between the two theoretical approaches was good. Discrepancies in the waveforms at longer times were caused by differences in reflections from the lateral plate boundaries. These differences resulted from the fact that the two methods used different boundary conditions. At shorter times in the signals, before reflections, the slight discrepancies in the waveforms were attributed to limitations of Mindlin plate theory, which is an approximate plate theory. The advantages of the finite element method are that it used the exact linear elasticity solutions, and that it can be used to model real source conditions and complicated, finite specimen geometries as well as thick plates. These advantages come at a cost of increased computational difficulty, requiring lengthy calculations on workstations or supercomputers. The Mindlin plate theory solutions, meanwhile, can be quickly generated on personal computers. Specimens with finite geometry can also be modeled. However, only limited simple geometries such as circular or rectangular plates can easily be accommodated with the normal mode solution technique. Likewise, very limited source configurations can be modeled and plate theory is applicable only to thin plates.

Symmetric Composite Laminate Stress Analysis

It is demonstrated that COSMIC/NASTRAN may be used to analyze plate and shell structures made of symmetric composite laminates. Although general composite laminates cannot be analyzed using NASTRAN, the theoretical development presented herein indicates that the integrated constitutive laws of a symmetric composite laminate resemble those of a homogeneous anisotropic plate, which can be analyzed using NASTRAN. A detailed analysis procedure is presented, as well as an illustrative example.

Postbuckling of laminated anisotropic panels

A two-part study of the buckling and postbuckling of laminated anisotropic plates with bending-extensional coupling is presented. The first part involves the development and application of a modified Rayleigh-Ritz analysis technique. Modifications made to the classical technique can be grouped into three areas. First, known symmetries of anisotropic panels are exploited in the selection of approximation functions. Second, a reduced basis technique based on these same symmetries is applied in the linear range. Finally, geometric boundary conditions are enforced via an exterior penalty function approach, rather than relying on choice of approximation functions to satisfy these boundary conditions. Numerical results are presented for both the linear and nonlinear range, with additional studies made to determine the effect of variation in penalty parameter and number of basis vectors. In the second part, six panels possessing anisotropy and bending-extensional coupling are tested. Detailed comparisons are made between experiment and finite element results in order to gain insight into the postbuckling and failure characteristics of such panels. The panels are constructed using two different lamination sequences, and panels with three different aspect ratios were constructed for each lamination sequence.

Influence of large deflection and transverse shear on random response of rectangular symmetric composite laminates to acoustic loads

Nonlinear equations of motion of symmetrically laminated anisotropic plates are derived accounting for von Karman strains. The effect of transverse shear is included in the formulation and the rotatory inertia effect is ignored. Using a single-mode Galerkin procedure the nonlinear modal equation is obtained. Direct equivalent linearization is employed. The response of acoustic excitation on moderately thick composite panels is studied. Further, the effects of transverse shear on large deflection vibration of laminates under random excitation are studied. Mean-square deflection and mean-square inplane stresses are obtained for some symmetric graphite-epoxy laminates. Using equilibrium equations and the continuity requirements, the mean-square transverse shear stresses are calculated. The results obtained will be useful in the sonic fatigue design of composite aircraft panels. The analysis is presented in detail for simply supported plate. The analogous equations for a clamped case are given in the appendix.
