Aqueous Alteration on the Ryugu Parent Body Constrained by Chemical Equilibrium Models

The composition of solid samples returned from the asteroid 162173 Ryugu byHayabusa2 indicates aqueous alteration of rocks that formed a parent body of Ryugu [1, 2]. As on parent bodies of carbonaceous chondrites [3-5], Ryugu materials could have went through (1) accretion of anhydrous and reduced rocky grains together with water-rich ices, (2) melting of ices in the body’s interior through release of radiogenic heat [6], and (3)aqueous alteration of rocky and organic materials that produced secondary minerals, salt- and organic-bearing water solutions, gases, and altered organic matter. Although the bulk chemical composition and major mineralogy (phyllosilicates, magnetite, pyrrhotite, carbonates, phosphates, etc.) of Ryugu [1,2]are similar to those of CI carbonaceous chondrites [3-5, 7], the lack of sulfates and a deficiency of oxygen in the returned samples suggest a distinct alteration pathway. Chondritic materials [3-5] do not indicate complete chemical equilibration though low-temperature parent body processes. However, calculations of chemical equilibria in modeling rock-water-gas type systems[e.g., 8, 9], could assess deviations of chondritic materials from equilibrium conditions and constrain partitioning of chemical elements between solid, aqueous, and gas phase for different stages of alteration. Here we constrained speciation of solid, aqueous, and gaseous phases during aqueous alteration on the Ryugu parent body through chemical equilibrium calculations.

Detection of alteration associated with a porphyry copper deposit in southern Arizona

Computer processing of Landsat MSS data was performed using contrast stretching and band-to-band ratioing. A false color ratio composite picture showed color anomalies which coincided with known areas of alteration on and about Red Mountain. A helicopter survey of the study area was undertaken using a portable field reflectance spectrometer. One hundred fifty-six spectra were obtained in the 0.4 to 2.5 micrometer wavelength region. The spectra were digitized, and contour maps for 24 wavelength intervals were produced; no spectral anomalies were evident for the known altered areas. A contour map produced from the 1.6 and 2.2 micrometer ratio generally delineated the alteration areas. The 1.3, 1.6, and 2.2 micrometer wavelength data were canonically transformed using a transformation empirically derived from discriminant function analysis of altered and unaltered materials for the Goldfield, Nevada region, and a contour map was produced for the first canonical variable. The known areas of alteration were clearly defined on the contour map.

Mapping hydrothermal alteration using aircraft VNIR scanners at the Rosemont porphyry copper deposit

Two Visible-Near Infrared (VNIR) scanners, the NS-001 and the M2S, were flown over the Rosemont porphyry copper deposit as part of the NASA/JPL/GEOSAT test site program. This program was established to determine the feasibility and limitations of mapping hydrothermal alteration with multispectral scanners. Data from the NS-001 at 0.83 and 2.2 microns were used to identify Fe(3+) and OH enriched outcrops. These areas were then correlated with three alteration assemblages. The first correlation, hematite-epidote, was the most obvious and appeared as a strong ferric iron signature associated with hematite stained Cretaceous arkoses and andesites. The second correlation, qtz-sericite, showed a combined ferric-hydroxyl signature for a phyllicly altered quartz monzonite. The third correlation, skarn, was identified only after a review of calc-silicate mineral VNIR spectra. Altered limestones that outcrop west of the deposit have a similar ferric iron-hydroxyl signature as the quartz-sericite altered quartz monzonite. This skarn signature has been interpreted to indicate the presence of andradite, hydro-grossularite and idocrase. Data from the second scanner, M2S, was used to search for variation in ferric iron mineral type. Resulting imagery data indicated that hematite was the dominant ferric iron mineral present in the Rosemont area.

Achondrite ALHA77005 - Alteration of chromite and olivine

The olivine crystals of the 77005 achondrite are brown except for colorless shock lamellae, mottled patches, and grains adjacent to pools of impact melt. Sporadic dark alteration patches in brown olivine and Cr-rich spinel gave the following average electron-microprobe analyses: (olivine) P2O5 0.9, SiO2 57.9, TiO2 0, Al2O3 0.7, Cr2O3 0.4, V2O3 0, Fe2O3 (assumed oxidation state) 17.0, MgO 1.6, CaO 0.2, Na2O 0, K2O 1.8, SO3 (assumed oxidation state) 9.2, Cl 0.1, sum 89.8 wt pct; (spinel) P2O5 3.5, SiO2 2.1, TiO2 2.2, Al2O3 2.1, Cr2O3 13.4, V2O3 0.8, Fe2O3 40.7, MgO 0.9, CaO 0.1, Na2O 0, K2O 2.0, SO3 11.1, Cl 0.1, sum 79.0 wt pct. Ion-microprobe analyses revealed H in both. Rare orange patches in brown olivine from another area gave SiO2 33-35, FeO 30-28, MgO 28-32, sum 93 wt pct. Thermal metamorphism under dry oxidizing conditions is discussed as a possible alternative to shock-induced oxidation for generation of the brown olivine (McSween and Stoeffler, 1980). Because alteration patches transgress shock lamellae, and because sulfatic alteration occurs in fusion crusts of Antarctic meteorites (Gibson et al., 1983), alteration of the 77005 achondrite at the Antarctic surface is preferred to a complex series of processes needed for preterrestrial alteration.

CI chondrite-like clasts in the Nilpena polymict ureilite - Implications for aqueous alteration processes in CI chondrites

Petrographic studies of Nilpena polymict ureilite have revealed the presence of small quantities of carbonaceous chondrite matrix clasts. Detailed electron microprobe and TEM studies show that the chemistry and fine-scale mineralogy of one of these clasts is consistent with CI carbonaceous chondrite matrix. Compared to Orgeuil, the phyllosilicate, sulfide, and oxide mineralogy suggests that the Nilpena clasts may represent a less altered type of CI matrix. It is suggested that increased oxidation and aqueous alteration of Nilpena-type materials could result in the formation of the type of mineral assemblage observed in Orgueil. Increased alteration produces progressive more Mg-rich phyllosilicates and more Fe(3+)-rich iron oxides, such as ferrihydrite. As a function of increased alteration, Ca is also progressively leached from the matrix material to form carbonate veins. The depletion of Ca in CI chondrite matrices suggests the Ivuna and Alais may be intermediate in their degree of alteration to Nilpena and Orgueil.

Preterrestrial aqueous alteration of the Lafayette (SNC) meteorite

The structure and chemical composition of the Lafayette meteorite were examined using several methods. The meteorite contains abundant hydrous post-magnetic alteration material consisting of ferroan smectite clays, magnetite, and ferrihydrite. The textural relations, mineralogy, and composition of these materials were examined and their preterrestrial nature was documented. Olivine, pyroxene, and glass alteration are described and the bulk compositions of the alteration veinlets is discussed. Essential features of the geochemistry of the alteration processes are described. It is suggested that the alteration of the Lafayette meteorite occurred during episodic infiltrations of small volumes of saline water. Constraints placed on water chemistry and water-rock interactions in the Martian crust are outlined.

Post-impact alteration of the Manson impact structure

Core materials from the Manson impact site (Manson, Iowa) are examined in order to evaluate post-impact alteration processes. Diagenetic interpretation of post-impact events is based on petrologic, mineralogic, and geochemical investigation of core materials including the following: target strata, disturbed and disrupted strata, ejecta, breccias, microbreccias, and impact melt. The diagenetic study utilizes research cores obtained by the continental scientific drilling project (CSDP) at the Manson structure, as well as core and cuttings of related materials. Samples include impactites (breccias, microbreccias, and melt material), crater fill material (sedimentary clast breccias), disturbed and disrupted target rocks, and reference target material (Amoco Eisheid No. 1 materials). The study of multiple cores will permit development of a regional picture of post-impact thermal history. The specific objectives are as follows: (1) provide a detailed description of authigenic and alteration mineralogy from diverse lithologies encountered in research drill cores at the Manson impact structure, and (2) identify and relate significant post-impact mineral alteration to post-impact thermal regime (extent and duration). Results will provide mineralogical and geochemical constraints on models for post-impact processes including the following: infilling of the crater depression; cooling and hydrothermal alteration of melt rocks; and subsequent long-term, low-temperature alteration of target rocks, breccias, and melt rocks. Preliminary petrologic and x-ray diffraction examination of fracture linings and void fillings from research core M1 indicate the presence of quartz, chlorite, mixed-layer clays, gypsum/anhydrite, calcite, and minor pyrite.

Renal function alterations during skeletal muscle disuse in simulated microgravity

This project was to examine the alterations in renal functions during skeletal muscle disuse in simulated microgravity. Although this area could cover a wide range of investigative efforts, the limited funding resulted in the selection of two projects. These projects would result in data contributing to an area of research deemed high priority by NASA and would address issues of the alterations in renal response to vasoactive stimuli during conditions of skeletal muscle disuse as well as investigate the contribution of skeletal muscle disuse, conditions normally found in long term human exposure to microgravity, to the balance of fluid and macromolecules within the vasculature versus the interstitium. These two projects selected are as follows: investigate the role of angiotensin 2 on renal function during periods of simulated microgravity and skeletal muscle disuse to determine if the renal response is altered to changes in circulating concentrations of angiotensin 2 compared to appropriate controls; and determine if the shift of fluid balance from vasculature to the interstitium, the two components of extracellular fluid volume, that occur during prolonged exposure to microgravity and skeletal muscle disuse is a result, in part, to alterations in the fluid and macromolecular balance in the peripheral capillary beds, of which the skeletal muscle contains the majority of recruitment capillaries. A recruitment capillary bed would be most sensitive to alterations in Starling forces and fluid and macromolecular permeability.

Application of MAC-Europe AVIRIS data to the analysis of various alteration stages in the Landdmannalauger Hydrothermal Area (South Iceland)

In June 1991 extensive airborne remote sensing data-sets have been acquired over Iceland in the framework of the joint NASA/ESA Multisensor Airborne Campaign Europe (MAC-Europe). The study area is located within the Torfajokull central volcanic complex in South Iceland. This complex is composed by anomalously abundant rhyolitic acid volcanics, which underwent intensive hydrothermal alteration. Detailed studies of surface alteration of rhyolitic rocks in the area showed that all the major elements are leached as the rock is affected by complex mineralogical changes. Montmorillonite appears during the earliest stages of alteration. In the ultimate alteration product montmorillonite is absent and the rock consists mostly of amorphous silica, anatase, up to a volume of 50% kaolinite and variable amounts of native sulphur and pyrite. The case study presented shall endeavor to assess the potential of MAC-Europe AVIRIS and TMS data in determining a possible zonation of hydrothermal alteration in relationship to the active geo-thermal fields and structural features. To this end, the airborne data is analysed in comparison with laboratory spectral measurements of characteristics rock, soil, and vegetation samples collected in the study areaduring the summer of 1992. Various spectral mapping algorithms as well as unmixing approaches are tested and evaluated. Detailed geological and structural mapping as well as geochemical analysis of the main rock and soil types were performed to underpin the analysis of the airborne data.

Iron alteration minerals in the visible and near-infrared spectra of low-albedo asteroids

Absorption features centered near 0.60-0.65 and 0.80-0.90 micrometers have been identified in the spectra of five low-albedo main-belt and outer-belt asteroids. These absorption features are attributed respectively to the (6)A(sub 1) goes to (4)T(sub 2)(G) and (6)A(sub 1) goes to (4)T(sub 1)(G) charge transfer transitions in minerals such as goethite, hematite, and jarosite that are products of the aqueous alteration of anhydrous silicates. A shoulder near 0.63 micrometers has also been identified in the absorption feature centered near 0.7 micrometers attributed to oxidized iron in phyllosilicates found predominantly in C- and G-class asteroids reflectance spectra. The coexistence of iron oxides with phyllosilicates in asteroids believed to have undergone aqueous alteration would be expected based upon analogy with terrestrial aqueous alteration and the observed mineralogy of carbonaceous chondrites. The number of low-albedo asteroids having only iron alteration absorption features compared to the number of low-albedo asteroids having spectral characteristics indicative of phyllosilicates is small. Either the conditions under which these asteroids formed are rare, or the iron alteration minerals could be formed in the interiors of objects where phyllosilicates dominate the surface mineralogy.

Regulated Expression of a Calmodulin Isoform Alters Growth and Development in Potato

A transgene approach was taken to study the consequences of altered expression of a calmodutin iso-form on plant growth and development. Eight genomic clones of potato calmodulin (PCM 1 to 8) have been isolated and characterized. Among the potato calmodulin isoforms studied, PCM 1 differs from the other isoforms because of its unique amino acid substitutions. Transgenic potato plants were produced carrying sense construct of PCM 1 fused to the CAMV 35S promoter. Transgenic plants showing a moderate increase in PCM 1 MRNA exhibited strong apical dominance, produced elongated tubers, and were taller than the controls. Interestingly, the plants expressing the highest level of PCM 1 MRNA did not form underground tubers. Instead, these transgenic plants produced aerial tubers when allowed to grow for longer periods. The expression of different calmodulin isoforms (PCM 1, 5, 6, and 8) was studied in transgenic plants. Among the four potato calmodulin isoforms, only the expression of PCM 1 MRNA was altered in transgenic plants, while the expression of other isoforms was not significantly altered. Western analysis revealed increased PCM 1 protein in transgenic plants, indicating that the expression of both MRNA and protein are altered in transgenic plants. These results suggest that increasing the expression of PCM 1 alters growth and development in potato plants.

A Survey of Olivine Alteration Products Using Raman Spectroscopy

Identification of mineral alteration products will aid in the crucial task of interpreting past Martian environmental conditions, especially aqueous environments. Olivine has been identified at the surface of Mars and is readily altered in aqueous environments. Using Raman spectroscopy, we studied three rocks with altered olivine and compared the data with mineral chemistry from electron microprobe analysis. Although the alteration in all three samples has loosely been called iddingsite their appearances and modes of occurrences differ as described. Alteration products in all three samples are likely fine-grained mixtures.

Changes in skeletal muscle gene expression consequent to altered weight bearing

Skeletal muscle is a dynamic organ that adapts to alterations in weight bearing. This brief review examines changes in muscle gene expression resulting from the removal of weight bearing by hindlimb suspension and from increased weight bearing due to eccentric exercise. Acute (less than or equal to 2 days) non-weight bearing of adult rat soleus muscle alters only the translational control of muscle gene expression, while chronic (greater than or equal to 7 days) removal of weight bearing appears to influence pretranslational, translational, and posttranslational mechanisms of control. Acute and chronic eccentric exercise are associated with alterations of translational and posttranslational control, while chronic eccentric training also alters the pretranslational control of muscle gene expression. Thus alterations in weight bearing influence multiple sites of gene regulation.

Hydrothermal Alteration at Lonar Crater, India and Elemental Variations in Impact Crater Clays

The role of hydrothermal alteration and chemical transport involving impact craters could have occurred on Mars, the poles of Mercury and the Moon, and other small bodies. We are studying terrestrial craters of various sizes in different environments to better understand aqueous alteration and chemical transport processes. The Lonar crater in India (1.8 km diameter) is particularly interesting being the only impact crater in basalt. In January of 2004, during fieldwork in the ejecta blanket around the rim of the Lonar crater we discovered alteration zones not previously described at this crater. The alteration of the ejecta blanket could represent evidence of localized hydrothermal activity. Such activity is consistent with the presence of large amounts of impact melt in the ejecta blanket. Map of one area on the north rim of the crater containing highly altered zones at least 3 m deep is shown.

Performance of the 19XB 10-Stage Axial-Flow Compressor with Altered Blade Angles

Previous performance data of the 19XB axial-flow compressor indicated that the outlet guide vanes and possibly the inlet guide vanes were stalling. Calculations were made to determine if these adverse conditions could be eliminated and if the manufacturer's design specifications could be more nearly approached by altering the blade angles of the first few compression stages as well as the outlet guide vanes. With the blade angles altered, experimental data were taken at compressor speeds of 8500 to 17,000 rpm with inlet-air conditions of 7.4 inches of mercury absolute and 59 0 F. The temperature-rise efficiency increased with speed from 0.70 at 8500 rpm to 0.74 at 13,600 rpm and dropped gradually to 0.70 at 17,000 rpm. At the design speed of 17,000 rpm, the pressure ratio at the peak efficiency point was 3.63. The maximum pressure ratio at design speed was 4.15 at an equivalent weight flow of 29.8 pounds per second. The altered compressor operated very .near the design specifications of pressure ratio and equivalent weight flow. At the high speeds, the peak adiabatic temperature-rise efficiency was increased 0.02 to 0,06 by altering the blade angles. The peak pressure ratio was increased 0.29 at design speed (17,000 rpm) and 0.05 and 0.13 at 11,900 and 13,600 rpm, respectively. The equivalent weight flow through the altered compressor was reduced 2 pounds per second at 15,300 and 17,000 rpm, as was expected from the design calculations. As extreme caution was taken not to surge the compressor violently, the point of minimum air flow may not have been reached in the present investigation and in a previous investigation. A true comparison of the pressure ratios obtained at the high speeds therefore cannot be made.

Titanium Mass-balance Analysis of Paso Robles Soils: Elemental Gains and Losses as Affected by Acid Alteration Fluids

The Columbia Hills soils have been exposed to aqueous alteration in alkaline [1] as well as acid conditions [2,3]. The Paso Robles class soils are bright soils that possess the highest S concentration of any soil measured on Mars [2]. Ferric-sulfate detection by Moessbauer analysis indicated that acid solutions were involved in forming these soils [4]. These soils are proposed to have formed by alteration of nearby rock by volcanic hydrothermal or fumarolic activity. The Paso Robles soils consist of the original Paso Robles-disturbed-Pasadena (PR-dist), Paso Robles- PasoLight (PR-PL), Arad-Samra, Arad-Hula, Tyrone- Berker Island1 and Tyrone-MountDarwin [2 ,3. ]Chemical characteristics indicate that the PR-dist and PR-PL soils could be derived from acid weathering of local Wishstone rocks while the Samra and Hula soils are likely derived from local Algonquin-Iroquet rock [3]. The Paso Robles soils were exposed to acidic sulfur bearing fluids; however, little else is known about the chemistry of the alteration fluid and its effects on the alteration of the proposed parent materials. The objectives of this work are to conduct titanium normalized mass-balance analysis to1) assess elemental gains and losses from the parent materials in the formation of the Paso Robles soils and 2) utilize this information to indicate the chemical nature of the alteration fluids.

Relationship Between Iron Valence States of Serpentine in CM Chondrites and Their Aqueous Alteration Degrees

The 0.6-0.7 micron absorption band observed for C-type asteroids is caused by the presence of Fe(3+) in phyllosilicates . Because Fe-bearing phyllosilicates, especially serpentine, are the most dominant product of aqueous alteration in the most abundant carbonaceous chondrites, CM chondrites, it is important to understand the crystal chemistry of serpentine in CM chondrites to better understand spectral features of C-type asteroids. CM chondrites show variable degrees of aqueous alteration, which should be related to iron valences in serpentine. It is predicted that the Fe(3+)/Sum of (Fe) ratios of serpentine in CM chondrites decrease as alteration proceeds by Si and Fe(3+) substitutions from end-member cronstedtite to serpentine, which should be apparent in the absorption intensity of the 0.6-0.7 micron band from C-type asteroids. In fact, the JAXA Hayabusa 2 target (C-type asteroid: 1993 JU3) exhibits heterogeneous spectral features (0.7 micron absorption band disappears by rotation). From these points of view, we have analyzed iron valences of matrix serpentine in several CM chondrites which span the entire observed range of aqueous alteration using Synchrotron Radiation X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure (SR-XANES). In this abstract we discuss the relationship between obtained Fe(3+)/Sum of (Fe) ratios and alteration degrees by adding new data to our previous studies
