Deep Learning Scene Classification Experiments in Automatic Detection of Slums on Planetscope Imagery

Population growth is increasingly happening in slum settlements of the large urban centers in the Global South. The term "slum" encompasses a wide range of communities, located mostly in underserved areas, and often exhibiting distinct structural and functional informalities with a relatively high concentration of marginalized populations. To address the issues confronting slums for effective planning and development, including the realistic estimation of the resident population, identifying them accurately is fundamental. Given the disagreements over a universal definition, diverse characteristic features, and socio-political limitations, global detection of slums is a veritable challenge. In this paper, we present experiments in slum detection using a scene classification algorithm and 3-meter spatial resolution satellite imagery. We train and evaluate the model for slum detection in Mumbai, India for the year 2023 and test the temporal generalization of the trained model on Mumbai in 2020 and 2018. In addition, we explore the pathways toward geographic generalization to Kolkata and Delhi (India). We discuss several limitations in the workflow and model, situate our findings in the existing literature, and suggest improvements and alternatives. With this, we establish baseline methods and experiments as a first step towards developing an image-based global slum detection framework and algorithm. This work adds to the community discussion on methods, data challenges, and open questions related to the detection of slums globally. With this research, we hope to improve our understanding of human settlements, especially in critical areas, improve population estimates, and help measure progress towards the sustainable development goals.

Automatic Loss Factor Modeling and Attribution on Unlabeled PV Energy Data

We present a novel approach for modeling the loss factors of photovoltaic power generation systems (PV systems). This method is a white-box machine learning model built on convex optimization that is fast, interpretable, and auditable. It takes as an input the measured daily energy produced by the system, over a multi-year period, and returns a multiplicative decomposition model of the daily energy signal and full attribution of the total energy loss to each feature. The methods section of this paper has two major components: (1) the description of the signal decomposition (SD) model, expressed in the SD framework, and (2) the attribution of total energy losses via Shapley values. We validate the method on synthetic and open-source data sets and compare to similar methods from the literature.

Mesh Computing Remote Automatic Workflow

The software suite uses a microservice architecture using Docker and `docker-compose`. The microservices are as follows: 1. User interface. This interface is written in JavaScript using the Svelte framework. It exposes form elements and a 3D visualizer to prompt the user through the definition of microstructure parameters, and setting parameters for mesh generation and refinement. 2. Mesh generator. This is a container running the Python package for DREAM3D to generate a voxelized mesh that represents a microstructure defined by the user in the interface. 3. Cubit runner. This is a secure shell protocol tool that makes the submitting the DREAM mesh to an HPC instance and starts to run Cubit shell commands to smooth the grain boundaries with its `sculpt` library, applies user-defined boundary node sets, and bundles and returns the simulation-ready meshes and input files as a zipped directory.

Machine Learning Atom Probe Tomography Tool For Automatic And Fast Clustering

The software uses a YOLO11 segmentation model trained on synthetic data to analyze APT datasets. The workflow operates as follows: 1. Data Slicing: The APT dataset is divided into multiple 2D cross-sections of a specified thickness. 2. Segmentation: The model identifies point-dense regions within each 2D slice. 3. 3D Reconstruction: Detected regions (masks) from all slices are combined and reconstructed back into the original 3D space, forming clusters. The integration with HPC resources enables the software to process large-scale APT datasets efficiently. This combination of automation and scalability reduces manual intervention, improves reproducibility, and accelerates the clustering workflow.

Automatic protection switching in an entanglement-based quantum network

We demonstrate multihop two-qubit entanglement distribution in a reconfigurable quantum network over deployed fiber. Using quantum-compatible software-defined networking, we distribute entanglement across six nodes in three buildings, with adaptive link recovery mitigating transmission disruptions.

Python-EPICS RF Conditioning Automatic Control System at the Spallation Neutron Source

The RF Test Facility (RFTF) at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) is used for the conditioning of RF compo-nents such as ceramic vacuum windows and power cou-plers prior to their installation in the H- ion linear accel-erator. This process exposes components to high-power RF fields and thermal cycling to improve performance and remove surface impurities. To automate and optimize this process, a Python-based EPICS control system was developed alongside targeted hardware upgrades. The system enables real-time monitoring and control of RF power levels, temperature, and vacuum pressure. A user-friendly graphical interface was implemented using CS-Studio (Phoebus), allowing operators to adjust parameters and collect data efficiently. The system integrates a High-Power Protection Module (HPM) for interlocks based on vacuum and arc detection, ensuring safe operation. These upgrades have significantly improved the efficiency, accuracy, and safety of RF conditioning at the SNS RFTF. This paper describes the updated RF conditioning sys-tem, highlighting the software and hardware develop-ments and their application in support of the Proton Pow-er Upgrade (PPU) project.

automesh: Automatic mesh generation in Rust

automesh is an open-source Rust software program that uses a segmentation, typically generated from a 3D image stack, to create a finite element mesh, composed either of hexahedral (volumetric) or triangular (isosurface) elements. automesh converts between segmentation formats (.npy, .spn) and mesh formats (.exo, .inp, .mesh, .stl, .vtk). automesh can defeature voxel domains, apply Laplacian and Taubin smoothing, and output mesh quality metrics. automesh uses an internal octree for fast performance.

Vexcel Imaging's Suitability for Automatic Verification

Accurate, independently verified geospatial data is essential for automated calibration, validation, and operational decision-making. This study evaluated the positional accuracy of Vexcel Imaging™’s UltraCam® Osprey imagery (7.5 cm GSD) using globally distributed Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS) as independent control. Despite manufacturer claims of 15 cm horizontal accuracy, residual errors were consistently one to two orders of magnitude larger, with no subset of imagery meeting precision thresholds. These discrepancies cannot be explained by normal photogrammetric or environmental factors and raise concerns about the reliability of the imagery for high-precision tasks. The results demonstrate that Vexcel imagery, in its current form, is unsuitable for workflows requiring rigorous spatial accuracy or automated verification. At the same time, the reproducible validation framework developed in this study establishes a scalable method for assessing commercial imagery, ensuring that future products can be independently and objectively verified before operational adoption.

Analysis of the automatic reconstruction of protons from simulated neutrino interactions in the ICARUS detector: study of the performance of track vs shower discrimination algorithms

ICARUS, Imaging Cosmic and Rare Underground Signals, is the far detector of the Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) Program at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL). This program was born with the purpose of definitely explaining some anomalies in the field of neutrino oscillation physics, that can suggest the existence of a 4-type of neutrino: the sterile neutrino. It doesn’t interact directly with ordinary matter through the weak interaction, but we can observed the effect of its oscillation. In this chapter I will briefly observe: • the physics goals of the SBN Program; • the role of ICARUS as SBN far detector; • the detection technology.
