Best-fit estimate of relativistic effects in time-delay experiments.

Time-delay experiments are analyzed within the frame of a curved space-time. Residuals from Newtonian best fits of relativistic data are used as a measure of the 'relativistic effects.' Radial transponder trajectories are considered. If the motion is towards the sun, the relativistic residuals are of the order of 100 m. If the motion is away from the sun, they are at the 10-km level and the fraction due to the second-order curvature of the metric is at the 1-km level. Those effects are significantly smaller than those calculated from the divergence of the Newtonian and relativistic predictions after exact fit of the initial measurements.

Best-range flight conditions for cruise-climb flight of a jet aircraft

The Breguet range equation was developed for cruise climb flight of a jet aircraft to include the climb angle and is then maximized with respect to the no wind true airspeed. The expression for the best range airspeed is a function of the specific fuel consumption and minimum drag airspeed and indicates that an operational airspeed equal to the fourth root of three times the minimum-drag airspeed introduces range penalties of the order of one percent.

Core compressor exit stage study. Volume 4: Data and performance report for the best stage configuration

The core compressor exit stage study program develops rear stage blading designs that have lower losses in their endwall boundary layer regions. The test data and performance results for the best stage configuration consisting of Rotor-B running with Stator-B are described. The technical approach in this efficiency improvement program utilizes a low speed research compressor. Tests were conducted in two ways: (1) to use four identical stages of blading to obtain test data in a true multistage environment and (2) to use a single stage of blading to compare with the multistage test results. The effects of increased rotor tip clearances and circumferential groove casing treatment are evaluated.

What does the eye see best?

The quantum efficiency of the human eye is measured for detecting a wide variety of spatiotemporal patterns using foveal vision in bright light. The performance of an ideal visual detector whose weighting function is matched to the signal is analyzed in the abstract, and the conditions of a two-interval forced-choice experiment are described. The best stimulus found is a small, briefly exposed circular patch of sinusoidal grating having a spatial frequency of about 7 c/deg, drifting at about 4 Hz. It is proposed that this is the weighting function of the most efficient human contrast detector. This function resembles the receptive field sensitivity profiles of many cortical neurons. The detectors resemble those derived from other recent experiments on both detection and discrimination and may account for a broad range of previous psychophysical results.

An expert system for choosing the best combination of options in a general-purpose program for automated design synthesis

An expert system was developed to aid a user of the Automated Design Synthesis (ADS) general-purpose optimization computer program in selecting the best combination of strategy, optimizer, and one-dimensional search options for solving a problem. There are approximately 100 such combinations available in ADS. The knowledge base contains over 200 rules, and is divided into three categories: constrained problems, unconstrained problems, and constrained problems treated as unconstrained problems. The inference engine is written in LISP and is available on DEC-VAX and IBM PC/XT computers.

What are the best radar wavelengths, incidence angles and polarizations for geologic applications? A statistical approach

Linear discriminant analysis of multifrequency and multipolarization radar scatterometer data of lava flows and sedimentary rocks indicates that the lava flows can be separated by age and the sedimentary rocks can be discriminated from one another. The optimum wavelengths, polarizations and incidence angles among those available for these problems was determined by the discriminant analysis program. For separation of the lava flows, shorter wavelengths, smaller incidence angles and horizontal polarization are best. A SIR-C radar configuration could provide nearly complete discrimination of these lava flows. Conversely, the longer wavelengths, larger incidence angles and vertical polarization was preferred for sedimentary rocks, perhaps due to the slight vegetation cover. Satisfactory classification of sedimentary rocks requires more radar data than for the lavas. These results are potentially useful both for radar system configuration and for geological applications. The method developed here may provide a rationale for user specification of imaging system parameters.

An expert system for choosing the best combination of options in a general purpose program for automated design synthesis

An expert system called EXADS has been developed to aid users of the Automated Design Synthesis (ADS) general purpose optimization program. ADS has approximately 100 combinations of strategy, optimizer, and one-dimensional search options from which to choose. It is difficult for a nonexpert to make this choice. This expert system aids the user in choosing the best combination of options based on the users knowledge of the problem and the expert knowledge stored in the knowledge base. The knowledge base is divided into three categories; constrained problems, unconstrained problems, and constrained problems being treated as unconstrained problems. The inference engine and rules are written in LISP, contains about 200 rules, and executes on DEC-VAX (with Franz-LISP) and IBM PC (with IQ-LISP) computers.

DIAL simulations for satellite water vapor profile measurements within the BEST project

The project BEST has been proposed by several laboratories of the French Space Agency (CNES) as part of the GEWEX program. Its objective is the study of the energy budget of the tropical system, and aims at measuring different components of the water cycle by coupling several observing systems. As part of this, Service d'Aeronomie (SA) proposed to study a Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) system to measure tropical water vapor profiles and to determine humidity convergence fields, when coupled with the Doppler wind lidar. We have performed simulation analyses for water vapor measurement from the selected orbit of 400 km. For these simulations, we have adopted an atmospheric model developed at SA. We have optimized, by a Monte Carlo statistical method, the system parameters and evaluated bias and standard deviation of the retrieved water vapor mixing ratio.

Best approximation to the weighted slab method

The weighted-slab method is modified so that, although it is still not exact, it gives the 'best' approximation in a minimization sense when energy loss cannot be neglected. In this approximation the species-dependent energy-change term that operates on the path-length distribution is 'averaged' over the slab-model solution for that particular energy and path length.

The best-fit universe

Inflation provides very strong motivation for a flat Universe, Harrison-Zel'dovich (constant-curvature) perturbations, and cold dark matter. However, there are a number of cosmological observations that conflict with the predictions of the simplest such model: one with zero cosmological constant. They include the age of the Universe, dynamical determinations of Omega, galaxy-number counts, and the apparent abundance of large-scale structure in the Universe. While the discrepancies are not yet serious enough to rule out the simplest and most well motivated model, the current data point to a best-fit model with the following parameters: Omega(sub B) approximately equal to 0.03, Omega(sub CDM) approximately equal to 0.17, Omega(sub Lambda) approximately equal to 0.8, and H(sub 0) approximately equal to 70 km/(sec x Mpc) which improves significantly the concordance with observations. While there is no good reason to expect such a value for the cosmological constant, there is no physical principle that would rule out such.

Battery charge control: Which approach is best?

The question of the best approach for battery charge control is addressed from two points of view: from the battery point-of-view; and from the spacecraft/mission point-of-view. In terms of performance, more aggressive charging can result in higher discharge voltage and capacity; however, aggressive charging usually implies more overcharge at higher rates and a concomitant higher end of charge temperature (higher stress, shorter life). In terms of life, benign charging can result in lower discharge voltage and capacity (poorer performance). Additionally, benign, or low stress charging, usually implies less overcharge at lower rates with lower end of charge temperature (lower stress, longer life). A discussion of these topics is presented in viewgraph form.

Least Squares Best Fit Method for the Three Parameter Weibull Distribution: Analysis of Tensile and Bend Specimens with Volume or Surface Flaw Failure

Material characterization parameters obtained from naturally flawed specimens are necessary for reliability evaluation of non-deterministic advanced ceramic structural components. The least squares best fit method is applied to the three parameter uniaxial Weibull model to obtain the material parameters from experimental tests on volume or surface flawed specimens subjected to pure tension, pure bending, four point or three point loading. Several illustrative example problems are provided.
