Concentrating solar mirrors need to have correct geometry to accurately focus sunlight onto a receiver. SOFAST is a tool created at Sandia National Laboratories which measures a mirror’s surface normal at a dense sampling of points, enabling evaluation of a given mirror’s expected performance. SOFAST supports general mirrors, including concentrating solar heliostats, troughs, and dishes. The examples presented in this report predominantly focus on heliostats.
Windows are thermally the “weakest link” in the building envelope. Increasing the thermal resistance of windows can make buildings more energy efficient and reduce the cost of electricity needed for conditioning the building. The proper design and placement of framing can also help to reduce the thermal bridging that occurs near the window frame area. This study investigates the energy performance of multi-pane acrylic windows fitting 24" on-center framing. Initial parametric analysis is done for a single zone accessory dwelling unit (ADU). Then, an energy model was developed for three types of wood-framed buildings: townhomes, stacked flats and hotels. A whole building energy simulation is performed for each of these building types in hot-humid Houston, mixed-humid New York, and cold-humid Minneapolis climates. The results show up to a 39% reduction in heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) related electricity consumption for the cold climate compared to the Base case which has window and wall properties based on ASHRAE standard 90.1 2019. In the hot climate, a modest increase in electricity consumption was seen due to an increase in cooling electricity demand. The ADU achieved Net Zero Energy performance in all 3 Climate Zones despite having the highest exterior surface area-to-floor area ratio: the ADU also had the highest PV kW to floor area ratio compared to the other multi-story building types. The townhomes, hotel and stacked flats respectively met 73, 52 and 57 % of electrical use in Houston, 71, 48 and 56 % in New York, and 63, 40 and 53 % in Minneapolis from energy produced by rooftop solar. If 400 W solar panels are used instead of 320 W panel used for energy simulation, it is estimated that in the townhomes, hotel and stacked flats rooftop solar can meet 91, 65 and 71 % of electrical use in Houston; 89, 60 and 70% in New York, and 79, 50 and 66 % in Minneapolis. A preliminary evaluation of cost shows that such superior performance can potentially be achieved at less first cost with this 24"on-center solution than conventional construction. All the building types at the three locations used for simulation had net energy use intensity under 20 kBtu/sf/year with 320 W solar panel and under 17 kBtu/sf/year with 400 W solar panel. Further tailoring of building envelope R-values and window solar heat gain to particular Climate Zone locations for each building type shows promise in reducing the HVAC electricity use that comprises almost half of building energy use.

An interactive software package which provides design solutions for both standard linear quadratic regulator (LQR) and suboptimal linear regulator problems is described. Intended for time-invariant continuous systems, the package is easily modified to include sampled-data systems. LQR designs are obtained by established techniques while the large class of suboptimal problems containing controller and/or performance index options is solved using a robust gradient minimization technique. Numerical examples demonstrate features of the package and recent developments are described.
The rotational spectra of the 2Sigma(2+) ground states of calcium monohydride and monodeuteride have been recorded in absorption between 250 and 700 GHz. The gas phase free radicals have been produced in a ceramic furnace by the reaction of elemental calcium with molecular hydrogen or deuterium in the presence of an electrical discharge. The molecular constants including the rotational constant, centrifugal distortion constants, spin-rotation constants, and magnetic hyperfine interaction constants have been extracted from the spectra.
Chip and software development communities are concerned with the runaway pace of chip development and the monumental problems which can quickly accumulate and overwhelm those charged with the task of IC development. This 'weight' must be transferred from the shoulders of the human developers to the software tools which assimilate and control the defining data of the development process. This paper details many of the problems which are being resolved by reviewing the obstacles and resultant advancements which the industry has made. Specifically, it will describe many of the things which are being done in one company to provide this much-needed relief.
A very important, but often overlooked step in grid generation is acquiring a suitable geometry definition of the vehicle to be analyzed. In the past, geometry was usually obtained by generating a number of cross-sections of each component. A number of recent efforts have focussed on non-uniform rational B-spline surfaces (NURBS) to provide as single type of analytic surface to deal with inside the grid generator. This approach has required the development of tools to read other types of surfaces and convert them, either exactly or by approximation, into a NURBS surface. This paper describes a more generic parametric evaluator approach, which does not rely on a particular surface type internal to the grid generation system and is less restrictive in the number of surface types that can be represented exactly. This approach has been implemented in the McDonnell Douglas grid generation system, MACGS, and offers direct access to all types of surfaces from a Unigraphics part file.
Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) is one of several technologies applied at NASA Glenn Research Center to determine atypical deformities, cracks, and other anomalies experienced by structural components. NDE consists of applying high-quality imaging techniques (such as x-ray imaging and computed tomography (CT)) to discover hidden manufactured flaws in a structure. Efforts are in progress to integrate NDE with the finite element (FE) computational method to perform detailed structural analysis of a given component. This report presents the core outlines for an in-house technical procedure that incorporates this combined NDE-FE interrelation. An example is presented to demonstrate the applicability of this analytical procedure. FE analysis of a test specimen is performed, and the resulting von Mises stresses and the stress concentrations near the anomalies are observed, which indicates the fidelity of the procedure. Additional information elaborating on the steps needed to perform such an analysis is clearly presented in the form of mini step-by-step guidelines.
Aerodynamic design is an iterative process involving geometry manipulation and complex computational analysis subject to physical constraints and aerodynamic objectives. A design cycle consists of first establishing the performance of a baseline design, which is usually created with low-fidelity engineering tools, and then progressively optimizing the design to maximize its performance. Optimization techniques have evolved from relying exclusively on designer intuition and insight in traditional trial and error methods, to sophisticated local and global search methods. Recent attempts at automating the search through a large design space with formal optimization methods include both database driven and direct evaluation schemes. Databases are being used in conjunction with surrogate and neural network models as a basis on which to run optimization algorithms. Optimization algorithms are also being driven by the direct evaluation of objectives and constraints using high-fidelity simulations. Surrogate methods use data points obtained from simulations, and possibly gradients evaluated at the data points, to create mathematical approximations of a database. Neural network models work in a similar fashion, using a number of high-fidelity database calculations as training iterations to create a database model. Optimal designs are obtained by coupling an optimization algorithm to the database model. Evaluation of the current best design then gives either a new local optima and/or increases the fidelity of the approximation model for the next iteration. Surrogate methods have also been developed that iterate on the selection of data points to decrease the uncertainty of the approximation model prior to searching for an optimal design. The database approximation models for each of these cases, however, become computationally expensive with increase in dimensionality. Thus the method of using optimization algorithms to search a database model becomes problematic as the number of design variables is increased.

BEMTs formed from Al(x)Ga(1-x)N/GaN heterostructures are being investigated for high RF power and efficiency around the world by many groups, both academic and industrial. In these devices, the 2DEG formation is dominated by both spontaneous and piezoelectric polarization fields, with each component having nearly the same order of magnitude. The piezoelectric portion is induced by the mechanical strain in the structure, and to analyze these devices, one must incorporate the stress/strain relationships, along with the standard semiconductor transport equations. These equations for Wurtzite GaN are not easily found in the open literature, hence this paper summarizes them, along with the constitutive equations for piezoelectric materials. The equations are cast into the format for the Wurtzite crystal class, which is the most common way GaN is grown epitaxially.
