The Non-carbonaceous–Carbonaceous Meteorite Dichotomy

The isotopic dichotomy between non-carbonaceous (NC) and carbonaceous (CC) meteorites indicates that meteorite parent bodies derive from two genetically distinct reservoirs, which presumably were located inside (NC) and outside (CC) the orbit of Jupiter and remained isolated from each other for the first few million years of the solar system. Here we review the discovery of the NC–CC dichotomy and its implications for understanding the early history of the solar system, including the formation of Jupiter, the dynamics of terrestrial planet formation, and the origin and nature of Earth’s building blocks. The isotopic difference between the NC and CC reservoirs is probably inherited from the solar system’s parental molecular cloud and has been maintained through the rapid formation of Jupiter that prevented significant exchange of material from inside (NC) and outside (CC) its orbit. The growth and/or migration of Jupiter resulted in inward scattering of CC bodies, which accounts for the co-occurrence of NC and CC bodies in the present-day asteroid belt and the delivery of presumably volatile-rich CC bodies to the growing terrestrial planets. Earth’s primitive mantle, at least for siderophile elements like Mo, has a mixed NC–CC composition, indicating that Earth accreted CC bodies during the final stages of its growth, perhaps through the Moon-forming giant impactor. The late-stage accretion of CC bodies to Earth is sufficient to account for the entire budget of Earth’s water and highly volatile species.

Toward a resolution of the NN controversy

Lattice QCD calculations of two-nucleon interactions have been underway for about a decade, but still haven't reached the pion mass regime necessary for matching onto effective field theories and extrapolating to the physical point. Furthermore, results from different methods, including the use of the Lüscher formalism with different types of operators, as well as the HALQCD potential method, do not agree even qualitatively at very heavy pion mass. We investigate the role that different operators employed in the literature may play on the extraction of spectra for use within the Lüscher method. We first explore expectations from Effective Field Theory solved within a finite volume, for which the exact spectrum may be computed given different physical scenarios. We then present preliminary lattice QCD results for two-nucleon spectra calculated using different operators on a common lattice ensemble.

Electrolyte Design for NMC811||SiO x -Gr Lithium-Ion Batteries with Excellent Low-Temperature and High-Rate Performance

The use of high-nickel NMC811 cathode and SiO x -Gr anode can greatly improve the overall energy densities of lithium-ion batteries. However, the unfavorable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer generated from the decomposition of EC-based electrolytes lead to the poor cycling stability of NMC811||SiO x -Gr cells. Here we report an electrolyte design of 1.5 M LiPF 6 dissolved in FEC/MA/BN 2:2:6 by volume, which can form thin, robust, and homogeneous SEI layer to greatly improve the charge transfer at the electrode-electrolyte interface. Importantly, the designed electrolyte shows an outstanding low temperature performance that it can deliver a capacity of 123.3 mAh g –1 after 50 cycles at −20 °C with a current density of 0.5 C, overwhelming the standard EC-based electrolyte (1.2 M LiPF 6 EC/EMC 3:7 by volume) with a capacity of 35.7 mAh g –1 . The electrolyte also has a superior rate performance that it achieves a capacity of 122.5 mAh g −1 at a high current density of 10 C. Moreover, the LTE electrolyte holds the great potential of extreme fast-charging ability because of the large part of CC contribution in the CCCV charging model at high charging current densities.

Reaction Profiles and Kinetics for Radical–Radical Hydrogen Abstraction via Multireference Coupled Cluster Theory

Radical-radical abstractions in hydrocarbon oxidation chemistry are disproportionation reactions that are generally exothermic with little or no barrier yet are underappreciated and poorly studied. Such challenging multireference electronic structure problems are tackled here using the recently developed state-specific multireference coupled cluster methods Mk-MRCCSD and Mk-MRCCSD(T), as well as the companion perturbation theory Mk-MRPT2 and the established MRCISD, MRCISD+Q, and CASPT2 approaches. Reaction paths are investigated for five prototypes involving radical-radical hydrogen abstraction: H + BeH → H 2 + Be, H + NH 2 → H 2 + NH, CH 3 + C 2 H 5 → CH 4 + C 2 H 4 , H + C2H 5 → H 2 + C 2 H 4 , and H + HCO → H 2 + CO. Full configuration interaction (FCI) benchmark computations for the H + BeH, H + NH 2 , and H + HCO reactions prove that Mk-MRCCSD(T) provides superior accuracy for the interaction energies in the entrance channel, with mean absolute errors less than 0.3 kcal mol(-1) and percentage deviations less than 10% over the fragment separations of relevance to kinetics. To facilitate combustion studies, energetics for the CH 3 + C 2 H 5 , H + C 2 H 5 , and H + HCO reactions were computed at each level of theory with correlation-consistent basis sets (cc-pVXZ, X = T, Q 5) and extrapolated to the complete basis set (CBS) limit. These CBS energies were coupled with CASPT2 projected vibrational frequencies along a minimum energy path to obtain rate constants for these three reactions. The rigorous Mk-MRCCSD(T)/CBS results demonstrate unequivocally that these three reactions proceed with no barrier in the entrance channel, contrary to some earlier predictions. Mk-MRCCSD(T) also reveals that the economical CASPT2 method performs well for large interfragment separations but may deteriorate substantially at shorter distances.

Atomic isotropic hyperfine properties for first row elements (B–F) revisited

Benchmark quality isotropic hyperfine properties have been obtained for first row elements (B–F) using a systematic composite approach consisting of a sequence of core/valence correlation consistent basis sets, up through aug-cc-pCV8Z, along with configuration interaction and coupled cluster theory methods. The best nonrelativistic final values (in MHz) are 10.64 (B), 20.22 (C), 10.59 (N), –31.74 (O), and 318.30 (F) and are in very good agreement with available experimental values for these difficult-to-describe properties. Agreement is especially close in the case of N, which has the most accurate experimental value. The spin densities derived from the best composite level of theory were found to closely follow a simple quadratic scaling with the atomic number, Z. Finally, observed convergence rates in the 1-particle and n-particle expansions obtained here may be useful in judging likely accuracy that can be expected in studies of molecular systems.

Sodium azide mutagenesis induces a unique pattern of mutations

The nature and effect of mutations are of fundamental importance to the evolutionary process. The generation of mutations with mutagens has also played important roles in genetics. Applications of mutagens include dissecting the genetic basis of trait variation, inducing desirable traits in crops, and understanding the nature of genetic load. Previous studies of sodium azide-induced mutations have reported single nucleotide variants (SNVs) found in individual genes. To characterize the nature of mutations induced by sodium azide, we analyze whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of 11 barley lines derived from sodium azide mutagenesis, where all lines were selected for diminution of plant fitness owing to induced mutations. We contrast observed mutagen-induced variants with those found in standing variation in WGS of 13 barley landraces. Here, we report indels that are two orders of magnitude more abundant than expected based on nominal mutation rates. We found induced SNVs are very specific, with C → T changes occurring in a context followed by another C on the same strand (or the reverse complement). The codons most affected by the mutagen include the sodium azide-specific CC motif (or the reverse complement), resulting in a handful of amino acid changes and few stop codons. The specific nature of induced mutations suggests that mutagens could be chosen based on experimental goals. Sodium azide would not be ideal for gene knockouts but will create many missense mutations with more subtle effects on protein function.

Quantitative Resistance Loci to Southern Rust Mapped in a Temperate Maize Diversity Panel

Southern rust is a severe foliar disease of maize (Zea mays) resulting from infection with the obligate biotrophic fungus Puccinia polysora. This disease reduces photosynthetic productivity, which in turn reduces yields, with the greatest yield losses (up to 50%) associated with earlier onset infections. P. polysora urediniospores overwinter only in tropical and subtropical regions but cause outbreaks when environmental conditions favor initial infection. Increased temperatures and humidity during the growing season combined with an increased frequency of moderate winters are likely to increase the frequency of severe southern rust outbreaks in the U.S. Corn Belt. In summer 2020, a severe outbreak of southern rust was observed in eastern Nebraska, United States. We scored a replicated maize association panel planted in Lincoln, NE for disease severity and found that disease incidence and severity showed significant variation among maize genotypes. Genome-wide association studies identified four loci associated with significant quantitative variation in disease severity. These loci were associated with candidate genes with plausible links to quantitative disease resistance. A transcriptome-wide association study identified additional genes associated with disease severity. Together, these results indicate that substantial diversity in resistance to southern rust exists among current temperate-adapted maize germplasm, including several candidate loci that may explain the observed variation in resistance to southern rust. Cation, Anion, and Radical Isomers of C4H4N: Computational Characterization and Implications for Astrophysical and Planetary Environments

Nitrogen-containing ions and molecules in the gas phase have been detected in non-Earth environments such as dark molecular clouds and more recently in the atmosphere of Saturn's moon Titan. These molecules may serve as precursors to larger heterocyclic structures that provide the foundation of complex biological molecules. On Titan, molecules of m/z 66 have been detected by the Cassini mission, and species of the empirical formula C 4 H 4 N may contribute to this signature. We have characterized seven isomers of C 4 H 4 N in anionic, neutral radical, and cationic states using density functional theory. Structures were optimized using the range-separated hybrid ωB97X-V with the cc-pVTZ and aug-cc-pVTZ basis sets. Anionic and radical C4H4N favor cyclic structures with aromatic and quasi-aromatic electron arrangements, respectively. Interestingly, ionization from the radical surface to the cation induces significant changes in structural stability, and the global minimum for positively charged isomers is CH 2 CCHCNH + , a pseudo-linear species reminiscent of cyanoallene. Select formation pathways to these structures from Titan's existing or postulated gas-phase species, reactions that are also relevant for other astrophysical environments, are discussed. By characterizing C 4 H 4 N isomers, we have identified energetically stable anionic, radical, and cationic structures that may be present in Titan's atmosphere and dark molecular clouds.

Identification of the Elusive Methyl-Loss Channel in the Crossed Molecular Beam Study of Gas-Phase Reaction of Dicarbon Molecules (C 2 ; X 1 Σ g + /a 3 Π u ) with 2-Methyl-1,3-butadiene (C 5 H 8 ; X 1 A')

The crossed molecular beams technique was utilized to explore the reaction of dicarbon C 2 (X 1 Σ g + /a 3 Π u ) with 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene (isoprene, CH 2 C(CH 3 )CHCH 2 ; X 1 A') at a collision energy of 28 ± 1 kJ mol⁻¹ using a supersonic dicarbon beam generated via photolysis (248 nm) of helium-seeded tetrachloroethylene (C 2 Cl 4 ). Here, experimental data combined with previous ab initio calculations provide evidence of the detection of the hitherto elusive methyl elimination channels leading to acyclic resonantly stabilized hexatetraenyl radicals: 1,2,4,5-hexatetraen-3-yl (CH 2 CC•CHCCH 2 ) and/or 1,3,4,5-hexatetraen-3-yl (CH 2 CHC•CCCH 2 ). These pathways are exclusive to the singlet potential energy surface, with the reaction initiated by the barrierless addition of dicarbon to one of the carbon-carbon double bonds in the diene. In combustion systems, both hexatetraenyl radicals can isomerize to the phenyl radical (C 6 H 5 ) through a hydrogen atom assisted isomerization – the crucial reaction intermediate and molecular mass growth species step toward the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and soot.

Colletotrichum species are globally distributed and well known as members of a destructive phytopathogenic genus, causing the anthracnose disease in a wide variety of crops and fruits. Colletotrichum sublineola is the causal agent of the anthracnose disease in sorghum, causing losses of up to 50% in yield. Synthesis and characteristics of porous ceramic tubes: a comparison of centrifugal casting and cold isostatic pressing methods

Short porous ceramic tubes in small quantities are needed for membrane-related research and development efforts and can be synthesized by centrifugal casting (CC) or cold isostatic pressing (CIP) methods. Here, this work evaluates the characteristics of porous ceramic tubes prepared by both methods and provides a strategy for selecting the proper method for ceramic tube fabrication, depending on its application. Samarium-doped ceria (SDC) with an average crystallite size of 10 nm was synthesized by a citrate method and used to make porous SDC tubes by the CC and CIP methods under different conditions. Porous SDC tubes were prepared from an aqueous suspension of the SDC powder with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) using a cylindrical metallic mold, centrifugated at 4000–6000 rpm, followed by sintering in 1200–1500 °C. SDC tubes were also made by the CIP method from the SDC powder placed inside a cylindrical rubber bag followed by isostatic compression at 1379 bar. The pore structure of the SDC tubes was characterized by helium permeation and liquid nitrogen Archimedes method. Due to high compression pressure giving a low porosity green tube, the CIP method with lower sintering temperature produces SDC tubes with much lower porosity and average pore size and similar tortuosity compared to the CC methods. The CIP method should be used to prepare low porosity or dense ceramic tubes, and the CC method should be used for preparing high-porosity ceramic tubes or tubes with pore gradient tube wall.

One-colour (~220 nm) resonance-enhanced (S 1 –S 0 ) multi-photon dissociation of acetylene: probe of the C 2 A 1 Π u – X 1 Σ + g band by frequency-modulation spectroscopy

In a recent paper, we demonstrated that one-colour (~220 nm), resonance-enhanced (S 1 –S 0 ), photodissociation of acetylene generates strong $C_2$ Swan band ($d^3Π_g–a^3Π_u$) and $C_2$ Deslandres-d'Azambuja band ($C^1Π_g–A^1Π_u$) fluorescence, and long-lived (>3 µs) fluorescence from an electronically-excited $C_2$H * species. It was not known whether the $C_2A^1Π_u$ and $X^1Σ^+_g$ states are also directly populated in this process. In this paper, multiple vibration-rotation transitions between the $C_2A$-state v = 2 and the X-state v = 0 level are examined by time-resolved frequency-modulation (FM) spectroscopy. The photolysis laser wavelength is tuned into resonance at the one-photon level with S 1 –S 0 transitions that populate individual rotational levels of the S 1 $_{trans}$-conformer $3^2,3^3,$ and $3^4$ vibrational states. By comparing the phase of the FM signals from the $C_2A–X$ transitions with that from the Rb D 1 -line absorption transition, we determine that, for all of the probed A–X transitions, the X-state level is more populated than the A-state level. We propose that the acetylene S 1 level is excited by the second photon to an acetylene dissociation precursor state, which undergoes sequential C-H bond-breaking to produce the $C_2X$ state. The dissociation precursor is assigned as the $1^1B_g(trans-bent)/1^1B_1(cis-bent)$ valence state, which correlates to a doubly-excited configuration, $(1π_u)^2(1π_g)^2$, at linear geometry. Based on the rotational distributions of the $C_2X$-state fragments, we believe that at least one of the transition states involved in the photolysis via S 1 $3^4$ has a larger CC-H bend-angle for the departing H-atom than that involved in the S 1 $3^2$ and $3^3$ photolysis.

A static quantum embedding scheme based on coupled cluster theory

Here, we develop a static quantum embedding scheme that utilizes different levels of approximations to coupled cluster (CC) theory for an active fragment region and its environment. To reduce the computational cost, we solve the local fragment problem using a high-level CC method and address the environment problem with a lower-level Møller–Plesset (MP) perturbative method. This embedding approach inherits many conceptual developments from the hybrid second-order Møller–Plesset (MP2) and CC works by Nooijen [J. Chem. Phys. 111, 10815 (1999)] and Bochevarov and Sherrill [J. Chem. Phys. 122, 234110 (2005)]. We go beyond those works here by primarily targeting a specific localized fragment of a molecule and also introducing an alternative mechanism to relax the environment within this framework. We will call this approach MP-CC. We demonstrate the effectiveness of MP-CC on several potential energy curves and a set of thermochemical reaction energies, using CC with singles and doubles as the fragment solver, and MP2-like treatments of the environment. The results are substantially improved by the inclusion of orbital relaxation in the environment. Using localized bonds as the active fragment, we also report results for N=N bond breaking in azomethane and for the central C–C bond torsion in butadiene. We find that when the fragment Hilbert space size remains fixed (e.g., when determined by an intrinsic atomic orbital approach), the method achieves comparable accuracy with both a small and a large basis set. Additionally, our results indicate that increasing the fragment Hilbert space size systematically enhances the accuracy of observables, approaching the precision of the full CC solver.

Measurement of $d^2 \sigma/d|\vec{q}|d E_{avail}$ and 2p2h contribution using charged current $\nu_\mu$ interactions in the NOvA Near Detector

This Thesis presents the analysis methods and measurement of the $d^2 \sigma/d|\vec{q}|d E_{avail}$-CC inclusive cross section that describes neutrino scattering in a predominantly hydrocarbon medium. Studies that are prerequisite for the analysis including, variable determinations, event selections, efficiency, purity determinations, and systematic uncertainty estimations, are summarized. Tests of the analysis are also detailed, and shown to reproduce the input distributions. The double-differential cross-section measurement provides the foundation for determination of the inclusive rate for the excess induced by 2p2h processes together with nuclear medium effects that are not described by the Fermi gas model. The methodology for the extraction of this rate, defined as the excess observed relative to the rate estimated for known single-nucleon interactions, is described in detail. The following new measurements are reported in this Thesis: (1) The $\nu_\mu-$CC inclusive double-differential cross section as a function of three-momentum transfer and available hadronic energy, for an average $E_\nu$ of 1.8 GeV, is obtained. The double-differential cross section value that obtains when the bin widths are taken to be the dimensions of the entire analysis domain, e.g. $0.2 \le |\vec{q}| \le 2.0 GeV/c$ and $0.0 \le E_{avail} \le 2.0$ GeV, is inclusive cross section is $(6.05 \pm 0.75)\times10^{-39}$ cm$^2$/GeV/GeV/$c$/nucleon. An event excess attributed to 2p2h-MEC processes is observed; most of the rate occurs in a contiguous phase space region $0.3 \le |\vec{q}| \le 1.0$ GeV$/c$ $0.0 \le E_{avail} \le 0.35$ GeV. This rate represents $12.0\pm 6.5\%$ of the observed CC inclusive cross section; its cross section ratio relative to CCQE scattering is estimated to be $44.3 \pm 23.9\%$.
