Intrinsic B-V color for galactic cepheids and some comments on the Sandage-Tammann relationship

Transformations are found for converting the b-y color excesses for Cepheids given by Williams (1966) and Kelsall (1971) into B-V excesses. The combination of these results with the E(B-V)'s determined by Sandage and Tammann (1971) gives precise data for eighty-eight galactic Cepheids. The period-color and period-color-(amplitude defect) relationships, that are germane to the LogP intervals 0.4 to 1.4 and 0.4 to 1.3, respectively, are found.

Hydrodynamic models of a Cepheid atmosphere. I - Deep envelope models

The implicit hydrodynamic code of Kutter and Sparks has been modified to include radiative transfer effects. This modified code has been used to compute deep envelope models of a classical Cepheid with a period of 12 days. It is shown that in this particular model the hydrogen ionization region plays only a small role in producing the observed phase lag between the light and velocity curves. The cause of the bumps on the model's light curve is examined, and a mechanism is presented to explain those Cepheids with two secondary features on their light curves. This mechanism is shown to be consistent with the Hertzsprung sequence only if the evolutionary mass-luminosity law is used.

Mean colors of Cepheids

Color observations of Cepheids can be interpreted by a color effective temperature relation to give different T sub e values for each kind of mean color. Here, theoretical colors from numerical integrations of Cepheid pulsations are used to determine the proper method of taking the color mean in order to get, by the color T sub e relation, the correct nonpulsating T sub e.

The Cepheid mode problem

The modal behavior of RR Lyrae stars and low mass Cepheids has been investigated using a nonlinear relaxation technique and stability analysis. The advantages of this type of numerical approach in investigations of preferred mode of pulsation are discussed. The results obtained for both classes of variable stars are quite similar: first harmonic pulsation toward the blue, fundamental pulsation toward the red, and mixed-mode behavior at the extreme red edge of the instability strip. In addition, stars near the center of the strip can pulsate in either the fundamental or the first harmonic mode. Possible implications for observational results, including the Oosterhoff dichotomy of globular clusters and the beat Cepheids, are discussed.

Bump Cepheids - The mass anomaly as an opacity effect

Nonlinear calculations of models for bump Cepheids indicate that most of the basic features of these stars can be reproduced well by models having normal to nearly normal evolutionary masses and normal helium abundances, if Carson's opacities are adopted. The trends of the properties of the models with various physical parameters are otherwise very similar to those obtained by other authors with the Los Alamos opacities (which have led to Cepheid masses of half the evolutionary masses). Difficulties with the resonance hypothesis of Simon and Schmidt as an explanation of the bump are discussed.

New Cepheid variables in the Crux-Centaurus region

Two star fields in the southern Milky Way, between galactic longitudes of approximately 294 and 320 deg, have been searched for new variables. At least three long-period (periods greater than 9 days) classical Cepheids have been tentatively identified, as well as one Virginis star. The resultant distribution of Cepheids along the Milky Way in the Crux-Centaurus region indicates a concentration of spiral tracers near a longitude of about 307 deg.

Light curves for bump Cepheids computed with a dynamically zoned pulsation code

The dynamically zoned pulsation code developed by Castor, Davis, and Davison was used to recalculate the Goddard model and to calculate three other Cepheid models with the same period (9.8 days). This family of models shows how the bumps and other features of the light and velocity curves change as the mass is varied at constant period. The use of a code that is capable of producing reliable light curves demonstrates that the light and velocity curves for 9.8 day Cepheid models with standard homogeneous compositions do not show bumps like those that are observed unless the mass is significantly lower than the 'evolutionary mass.' The light and velocity curves for the Goddard model presented here are similar to those computed independently by Fischel, Sparks, and Karp. They should be useful as standards for future investigators.

An independent Cepheid distance scale: Current status

An independent distance scale for Cepheid variables is discussed. The apparent magnitude and the visual surface brightness, inferred from an appropriate color index, are used to determine the angular diameter variation of the Cepheid. When combined with the linear displacement curve obtained from the integrated radial velocity curve, the distance and linear radius are determined. The attractiveness of the method is its complete independence of all other stellar distance scales, even though a number of practical difficulties currently exist in implementing the technique.

The detection of a companion star to the Cepheid variable Eta Aquilae

Ultraviolet spectra have been obtained with IUE of the classical Cepheid Eta Aquilae at several phases in the 7.18 day period. Significant ultraviolet emission is detected at wavelengths less than 1600 A, where little flux is expected from classical Cepheids. Furthermore, the emission at wavelengths less than about 1600 A does not vary with phase. Comparison with model atmosphere flux distributions shows that the nonvariable emission is consistent with the flux expected from a main-sequence companion star with an effective temperature of about 9500 K (A0 V). The observed ultraviolet flux and spectral type are used to compute a distance of 300 pc to the system, in agreement with the distance predicted using the period luminosity relation.

The detection of companion stars to the Cepheid variables ETA Aquilae and T Monocerotis

Ultraviolet spectra of the classical Cepheid variables eta Aq1 and T Mon at several phases in their periods were obtained with IUE. For eta Aq1 significant ultraviolet emission is detected at wavelengths less than 1600 A, where little flux is expected from classical Cepheids. Furthermore, the emission at wavelengths less than about 1600 A does not vary with phase. Comparison with model atmosphere flux distributions shows that the nonvariable emission is consistent with the flux expected from a main sequence companion star with an effective temperature of about 9500 K (AO V - A1 V). For T Mon a nonvarying component to the ultraviolet emission is observed for wavelengths less than 2600 A. Comparison with model atmosphere flux distributions suggests that the companion has an effective temperature of around 10,000 K (AO) and is near the main sequence.

On the mass of the Cepheid X Cygni

Using a new non-Lagrangian hydrodynamic radiation transport code, models of the Cepheid X Cygni have been calculated and compared with new observations. Adopting an effective temperature of 5300 K, the luminosity was varied for stellar masses of 6, 8, and 9 solar masses in order to obtain a period of 16.4d. The results indicate that in order to find reasonable agreement between the light curves as calculated and observed, the mass used in the models must be nearly the evolutionary mass, not some 60% less as found in earlier work for Cepheids with periods from 7d to 10d. In addition, the new observations support the physical reality of the so-called 'artificial viscosity dip'.

ANS ultraviolet observations of dwarf Cepheids

Ultraviolet observations of three dwarf Cepheids (VZ Cnc, SX Phe, and AI Vel) are presented. The UV light curves are consistent with those in the visual region. When compared to standard stars, all three dwarf Cepheids exhibit flux deficiencies at the shortest observed wavelengths. The most extreme deficiencies appear for SX Phe; these may be related to the other properties previously noted for this star, including low metallicity, high space motion, and low luminosity.

Cepheid distances from blue main-sequence companions

The absolute visual magnitudes of main-sequence Cepheid companions are here determined from their effective temperatures. The latter are obtained by comparing the measured relative energy distributions with model atmosphere energy distributions. Assuming an average Galactic extinction law, it is found that the distance moduli for the Cepheids should be smaller by Delta (mv-Mv) = -0.5 as compared to the Sandage-Tammann relation.

Absolute magnitudes for binary classical Cepheids were derived by ratioing IUE low dispersion spectra in regions where the blue companion dominates with spectra of main sequence spectral type standards. The IUE spectra are also used to determine the magnitude difference between the Cepheid and the blue companion. Absolute magnitudes determined for SU Cyg and W Sgr agree with the absolute magnitudes of Sandage and Tammann and Caldwell within the + or - 0m2 estimated uncertainty, but not with the fainter absolute magnitudes of Schmidt. The absolute magnitude of SU Cas is in better agreement with the PLC relations if it is pulsating in the first overtone mode.

The orbit and colors of the Cepheid S Muscae

A new orbit has been computed for the binary Cepheid S Mus combining new data from Mount John Observatory with previous data. Corrections to the colors and reddening due to the light from the companion are derived. The spectral type determined from IUE low-dispersion spectra is used for these corrections. The corrections are small, even though the companion is one of the hottest (B5 V) known for a Cepheid.

Cepheid companions? FM Aquilae, FN Aquilae, RX Aurigae, Y Lacertae, and RS Orionis

IUE spectra have been used to search for companions of FN Aql and RX Aur, two classical Cepheids which have been tentatively identified as binary stars on the basis of cyclic variations in their pulsation periods. Three other Cepheids, FM Aql, Y Lac, and RS Ori, suspected of having blue companions from the (U-B), (B-V) diagram, have also been investigated. There is no indication of a companion of FM Aql, FN Aql, and RX Aur. If these stars have companions, they must be at least as cool as A0 V, Al V, and A1 V, respectively.

An empirical test for the metallicity sensitivity of the Cepheid period-luminosity relation

The results are reported of the first observational test of the sensitivity of the zero point of the Cepheid period-luminosity relation to metal abundance. BVRI time-averaged observations of Cepheids in three radially separated and chemically different fields in M31 are used to find mean reddenings and true distance moduli that differ by only 0.25 mag. Consistent distances are found for all three fields. The large observed differences in the apparent moduli can be totally attributed to different mean extinctions among the three fields.
