Primary fission fragment mass yields across the chart of nuclides

In this work, we have calculated a complete set of primary fission fragment mass yields, Y(A), for heavy nuclei across the chart of nuclides, including those of particular relevance to the rapid neutron capture process (r process) of nucleosynthesis. We assume that the nuclear shape dynamics are strongly damped, which allows for a description of the fission process via Brownian shape motion across nuclear potential-energy surfaces. The macroscopic energy of the potential was obtained with the Finite-Range Liquid-Drop Model (FRLDM), while the microscopic terms were extracted from the single-particle level spectra in the fissioning system by the Strutinsky procedure for the shell energies and the BCS treatment for the pairing energies. For each nucleus considered, the fission fragment mass yield, Y(A), is obtained from 50 000 to 500 000 random walks on the appropriate potential-energy surface. The full mass and charge yield, Y(Z,A), is then calculated by invoking the Wahl systematics. With this method, we have calculated a comprehensive set of fission-fragment yields from over 3800 nuclides bounded by 80 ≤ Z ≤ 130 and A ≤ 330; these yields are provided as an ASCII formatted database in the Supplemental Material. We compare our yields to known data and discuss general trends that emerge in low-energy fission yields across the chart of nuclides.

Hofmann Stability Charts Revisited for PIP-II: From Classical Theory to Assumption-Free and ML-Driven Maps

The Hofmann stability chart remains a standard for visualizing parametric resonances in space-charge–dominated linacs, but its use typically relies on non-oscillatory Vlasov dispersion relations with simplifying assumptions (continuous focusing, KV phase space, linear optics, limited transverse–longitudinal coupling). We revisit the chart for the PIP-II linac along three tracks. (1) We reproduce the conventional maps in the (νz/νx, νx/ν0x) plane for relevant εz/εx, providing a validated reference. (2) We remove key assumptions by deriving stability surfaces directly from multi-particle tracking with realistic lattice discreteness, RF defocusing, solenoid/quad optics, and bunched-beam dynamics; local tunes and early-time growth rates are estimated from envelope oscillations and projected to the same coordinates. These assumption-reduced maps recover the canonical stopbands while revealing shifts and broadenings driven by tune modulation, non-KV distributions, and transverse–longitudinal coupling at PIP-II intensities. (3) We train a compact machine-learning surrogate that emulates the growth surface from zero-current optics, tune depression, emittance ratio, bunching factor, and selected lattice descriptors, enabling rapid scans and online working-point selection. We compare the three representations on representative PIP-II sections and discuss implications for commissioning guard bands, resonance avoidance, and routine operations.

Charts designate probable future oceanographic research fields

Charts outline the questions and problems of oceanographic research in the future. NASA uses the charts to estimate the probable requirements for instrumentation carried by satellites engaged in cooperative programs with other agencies concerned with identification, analysis, and solution of many of these problems.

Psychrometric chart for physiological research

Chart facilitates use of graphical techniques for solving problems involving thermodynamic properties of moist air. The properties are presented, and their units of measurement are listed. Chart presenting conditions at standard atmosphere pressure at sea level is most useful.

Charts for predicting turbulent skin friction from the Van Driest method (2)

Charts are presented for rapidly estimating local or average turbulent skin friction on flat plates from Reynolds numbers, based on either length or momentum thickness. These charts facilitate the conversion from one Reynolds number to the other. Ranges of variables covered are: Mach number, 0 to 10; length Reynolds number, 10 to the 5th to 10 to the 9th power; and wall-to-adiabatic-wall temperature ratio, 0.2 to 1.0.

A chart of cosmic ray isotopes

A chart has been prepared that lists some of the properties relevant to cosmic ray studies of all the significant nuclides between lithium and nickel. On this chart there are shown all the possible decays that might be of interest in the unique conditions experienced by cosmic ray nuclei, various abundance figures and the probable nucleosynthesis processes of origin.

Observations of winter polynyas and fractures using NOAA AVHRR TIR images and Nimbus-7 SMMR sea ice concentration charts

The validity of the daily sea ice concentration charts obtained from Nimbus-7 SMMR data is tested against thermal IR NOAA AVHRR-4 images with a 1.1 x 1.1 km resolution. Polynyas and fractures recorded in both data sets are compared for the same times over the same areas. Although the coarser resolution of SMMR data leads to a loss of detail, it is found that the ice concentration charts provide valuable data on openings in the ice. The SMMR data on the location, orientation, and size of polynyas and fractures are shown to be in good agreement with the AVHRR data. Also, the results suggest that the location and orientation of plynyas and fractures are related to the direction of surface winds.

Propeller-performance charts for transport airplanes

The preliminary selection of a propeller on the basis of cruising and take-off performance for application to transport airplanes at flight Mach numbers up to 0.8 can be accomplished by the use of charts and methods presented. The charts are of sufficient scope to permit a fairly rapid evaluation of the propeller performance for engine power ratings of 1,000 to 10,000 horsepower. The method is presented primarily in the interest of propeller-noise abatement.

Charts for estimating the hovering endurance of a helicopter

As a means of comparing the performance capabilities of various helicopter propulsion systems, charts have been presented for estimating the hovering endurance of a helicopter in the form of a hovering-endurance parameter as a function of the ratio of total fuel load to helicopter initial weight for a range of initial thrust coefficients from 0.002 to 0.012 and for values of rotor mean lift coefficient from 0.24 to .072. The charts were presented for a helicopter having rotor blades with ideal twist. However, corrections may be applied to the hovering endurance to account for other combinations of twist and taper. The effects of stall and compressibility have been neglected.
