Long range holographic contour mapping concept

Plan for generating a two dimensional contour map of a distant object with range contour intervals of a few millimeters to a few inches is accomplished by using a laser light source which has a periodically varying coherence function to form a hologram of the object.

Mean and fluctuating velocity contours and acoustic characteristics of subsonic and supersonic jets.

Mean and fluctuating velocity contours were determined for a convergent nozzle from surveys with impact pressure and piezoelectric pressure gauge probes, at Mach numbers of 0.6 to 1.4. For supersonic Mach numbers of 1.2 and 1.4, the length of the supersonic region increased as the square of the Mach number, and the peak pressure fluctuations occurred close to the sonic velocity contour. For subsonic Mach numbers of 0.6 to 1.0, the peak pressure fluctuations occurred in a toroidal region located approximately 4 to 6 diameters from the nozzle. The normalized sound power spectra for subsonic Mach numbers were similar, and for supersonic Mach numbers the power spectra shifted to the higher frequencies.

Thermal contouring of forestry data: Wallops Island

The contouring of 8-13.5 micrometer thermal data collected over a forestry site in Virginia is described. The data were collected at an altitude of 1000 ft above terrain on November 4, 1970. The site was covered on three approximately parallel lines. The purpose of the contouring was to attempt to delineate pine trees attacked by southern pine bark beetle, and to map other important terrain categories. Special processing steps were required to achieve the correct aspect ratio of the thermal data. The reference for the correction procedure was color infrared photography. Data form and quality are given, processing steps are outlined, a brief interpretation of results is given, and conclusion are presented.

Contoured patterns from reflector systems - A spherical wave expansion solution

Any electromagnetic field - e.g., a contoured antenna pattern may be expanded into a sum of spherical waves, similar to a one-dimensional Fourier expansion. This expanded wave could then be scattered from a source reflector to determine a resulting required feed field in the vicinity of the focal region. This is of questionable value, and the more significant information to produce would be the required feed pattern itself. Hence the required contour pattern is instead scattered from the back of the reflector, and the result is the required feed pattern with origin at the focus of the chosen reflector.

HP-9825A calculator programs for plotting orbiter RCS jet dynamic pressure contours

Computer programs which generate displays of the dynamic pressure fields generated by orbiter RCS thruster firings are described. The programs can be used to generate dynamic contours for an isolated RCS jet and to superimpose the plume contours for specific jets or jet clusters on front and side views of the orbiter profile.

Variable contour securing system

A variable contour securing system has a retaining structure for a member whose surface contains a variable contour. The retaining mechanism includes a spaced array of adjustable spindles mounted on a housing. Each spindle has a base member support cup at one end. A vacuum source is applied to the cups for seating the member adjacent to the cups. A locking mechanism sets the spindles in a predetermined position once the member has been secured to the spindle support cups.

Film coatings for contoured surfaces

Thickness of fluorocarbon elastomer films applied in contoured shapes by vacuum forming is difficult to control at sharply curved areas. Process for spraying contoured fluorocarbon elastomer films of uniform strength and thickness has been used instead of vacuum forming to fabricate curtain covering external tank of Space Shuttle. Conventional spray equipment may be used.

The effect of throat contouring on two-dimensional converging-diverging nozzles at static conditions

An experiment was conducted at static conditions to determine the internal performance effects of nozzle throat contouring, the result of increasing the circular-arc throat radius. Five nonaxisymmetric converging-diverging nozzles were tested at nozzle pressure ratios up to 9.0. Data are presented as internal thrust ratios, discharge coefficients, and static-pressure distributions. Comparisons of internal performance data for the five nozzles show that throat contouring increases the value of discharge coefficient but has no significant effect on internal thrust ratio except in cases of internal flow separation. To illustrate the use of the two dimensional converging-diverging (2-D C-D) nozzle data base, a two dimensional inviscid theory was applied to the five configurations. The generally good agreement of data with theoretical results indicates that two-dimensional inviscid theory can be successfully applied to the prediction of 2-D C-D nozzle internal flow.

Analytical and experimental investigation of stator endwall contouring in a small axial-flow turbine. 1: Stator performance

Three stator configurations were studied to determine the effect of stator outer endwall contouring on stator performance. One configuration was a cylindrical stator design. One contoured stator configuration had an S-shaped outer endwall, the other had a conical-convergent outer endwall. The experimental investigation consisted of annular surveys of stator exit total pressure and flow angle for each stator configuration over a range of stator pressure ratio. Radial variations in stator loss and aftermixed flow conditions were obtained when these data were compared with the analytical results to assess the validity of the analysis, good agreement was found.

Aeroacoustics of contoured and solid/porous conical plug-nozzle supersonic jet flows

The acoustic far field, the shock-associated noise and characteristics of the repetitive shock structure of supersonic jet flows issuing from a contoured plug-nozzle and uncontoured plug-nozzle having a short conical plug of either a solid or a combination of solid/porous surface with pointed termination operated at a range of supercritical pressure are reported. The contoured and the uncontoured plug-nozzles had the same throat area and the same annular-radius ratio.

Wave-measurement capabilities of the surface contour radar and the airborne oceanographic lidar

The 36-gigahertz surface contour radar and the airborne oceanographic lidar were used in the SIR-B underflight mission off the coast of Chile in October 1984. The two systems and some of their wave-measurement capabilities are described. The surface contour radar can determine the directional wave spectrum and eliminate the 180-degree ambiguity in wave propagation direction that is inherent in some other techniques such as stereophotography and the radar ocean wave spectrometer. The Airborne Oceanographic Lidar can acquire profile data on the waves and produce a spectrum that is close to the nondirectional ocean-wave spectrum for ground tracks parallel to the wave propagation direction.

Curvature of blended rolled edge reflectors at the shadow boundary contour

A technique is advanced for computing the radius of curvature of blended rolled edge reflector surfaces at the shadow boundary, in the plane perpendicular to the shadow boundary contour. This curvature must be known in order to compute the spurious endpoint contributions in the physical optics (PO) solution for the scattering from reflectors with rolled edges. The technique is applicable to reflectors with radially-defined rim-shapes and rolled edge terminations. The radius of curvature for several basic reflector systems is computed, and it is shown that this curvature can vary greatly along the shadow boundary contour. Finally, the total PO field in the target zone of a sample compact range system is computed and corrected using the shadow boundary radius of curvature, obtained using the technique. It is shown that the fields obtained are a better approximation to the true scattered fields.

Detailed operating characteristics of a 30-kW ammonia arcjet engine with a contoured nozzle

Detailed experimental investigations were conducted to define the operating characteristics of a 30-kW type, arcjet engine with a contoured nozzle. The experiments were conducted in a fully instrumented facility with the engine mounted on a thrust stand. Engine performance was mapped over a power range of 10.6 to 23.0 kW with a mass flow range of 0.175 to 0.350 g/s. The data is presented in graphical form with the relationships between arc potential, arc current, power, thrust, specific impulse and thrust efficiency presented. This paper provides the first detailed accounting of arcjet operation with a contoured nozzle. Further theoretical and experimental work needs to be done to fully explain many of the features exhibited by the data.
