Installation of Lysimeters Near Engineered Trench 3, Slit Trench 8, and Slit Trench 9

Nine new lysimeter stations were installed at the E-Area Low Level Waste Facility (ELLWF). Six lysimeter stations were installed near Engineered Trench 3 (ET3), one installed near Slit Trench 8 (ST8), and two installed near Slit Trench 9 (ST9) as shown in Figure ES-1. Two lysimeters were installed at each station at the depths shown in Table ES-1. Lysimeter placements were based on borehole lithology and were comparable to existing nearby lysimeter stations. The deepest lysimeter at each of the new lysimeter stations was designated as the action-level lysimeter. Following installation, the lysimeters were purged and placed under vacuum for sampling. Sampling occurred in April 2023. Analytical results from the sampling will be provided in the Spring 2023 Lysimeter Tritium Data technical memo and the 2023 Annual Summary Report. With the addition of the new lysimeters at ET3, ST8, and ST9, the vadose zone monitoring system is now comprised of 327 active lysimeters at 111 lysimeter stations. There are 102 action-level lysimeters at 111 stations.

Effects of Cone Penetrometer Testing on Shallow Hydrogeology at a Contaminated Site

Penetration testing is a popular and instantaneous technique for subsurface mapping, contaminant tracking, and the determination of soil characteristics. While the small footprint and reproducibility of cone penetrometer testing makes it an ideal method for in-situ subsurface investigations at contaminated sites, the effects to local shallow groundwater wells and measurable influence on monitoring networks common at contaminated sites is unknown. Physical and geochemical parameters associated with cone penetrometer testing were measured from a transect of shallow groundwater monitoring wells adjacent to penetrometer testing. For wells screened above the depth of cone refusal, the physical advancement and retraction of the cone had a significant effect ( p < 0.01) on water level for several pushes within 10 meters of a monitoring well, and a measured increase in specific conductivity. No effect on geochemistry or water level was observed in continuous monitoring data from wells screened below the depth of cone refusal, but variability in specific conductivity from these wells during penetration testing was only a fraction of the natural variation measured during precipitation events. Continuous measurements of specific conductivity and water level demonstrated that the effects of penetration testing have limited spatial and temporal distributions with a null effect post-testing.

Renormalon subtracted nonrelativistic QCD for heavy hadron systems

We present a renormalon-subtracted formulation of potential nonrelativistic QCD (pNRQCD) for precision spectroscopy of heavy hadron systems, combining variational and Green's function Monte Carlo (VMC/GFMC) methods with NNLO static two- and three-body potentials. Minimal renormalon subtraction (MRS) systematically sums leading factorially growing terms, thereby stabilizing perturbative convergence and reducing renormalization-scale dependence. We tune charm and bottom quark masses to spin-averaged $1S$ quarkonium states and predict $Ω_{ccc}$, $Ω_{ccb}$, $Ω_{cbb}$, and $Ω_{bbb}$ baryon masses, as well as QCD-stable baryons containing top quarks. NNLO MRS results undershoot lattice QCD by 125--175~MeV, with fractional differences decreasing as $\sim 1/m_Q$, consistent with neglected $\mathcal{O}(1/m_Q)$ corrections. Applying these methods to unequal-mass fully-heavy tetraquarks, we determine the critical heavy-to-light mass ratio for binding and compute binding energies across the mass-ratio landscape.
