Commercialization of Reflected Target Non-Intrusive Assessment (ReTNA) Tool, for Indoor Optical Analysis of Heliostats

Under HelioCon, NLR began developing a new optical measurement system, called Reflected Target Non-Intrusive Assessment (ReTNA). ReTNA has shown promise towards addressing metrology gaps for heliostat used in concentrated solar thermal (CST) plant. This project is focused on advancing this measurement system from the laboratory into industry, where it can provide valuable information for heliostat developers during research, development, and qualification of a heliostat design, and be used for quality assurance during heliostat manufacture. Over the course of this project, ReTNA was deployed at several commercial heliostat facilities. The system developed and deployed with the primary project partner, Solar Dynamics LLC, is described in detail. The report discusses each project Milestone, the ending status, the achieved value, and how these Milestones improve and qualify the ReTNA measurement tool. Finally, the final report covers the market advancements, path forward, commercial successes, and lessons learned. RTN-045: Guidelines for User Tutorials

This document defines the guidelines, principles, and formats for user-facing tutorials that demonstrate how to use the Rubin Science Platform (RSP) to analyze data from the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). All Rubin staff and the broader science community should use these guidelines when contributing to the sets of Jupyter Notebook or documentation-based tutorials maintained by the Rubin Community Science team (CST).

A Tutorial Set to Prepare for Science with the Vera C. Rubin Observatory

In this poster the Rubin Observatory's Community Science team (CST) presents its current suite of tutorials, which are designed to help people make use of simulated data sets in preparation for the upcoming Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). We will show examples of the tutorial contents, provide custom learning modules for different astronomical fields, and describe the online environment for data analysis (the Rubin Science Platform; RSP). We will also supply a checklist for how to obtain an RSP account and access the tutorials. All are welcome to drop by the poster or the Rubin booth in the exhibit hall with questions.

Online Alpha Monitoring of High Cs-137 Hanford and SRS High Level Waste with Tensioned Metastable Fluid Detectors

The Department of Energy’s Hanford and Savannah River Sites maintain millions of gallons of caustic supernate and salt high activity waste in their high-level waste (HLW) tank farm inventories. The Savannah River Site is currently treating this waste with a calixarene-based solvent extraction of Cs-137 to reduce these inventories. Hanford is employing an at-tank crystalline silico titanate (CST) based solid phase extraction methodology to reduce their liquid HLW inventories. Due to the high solubility of Cs-137 and the relative insolubility of the actinides in these caustic waste forms, the beta to alpha radioactivity ratio can often exceed six orders of magnitude in the feed solutions to these treatment processes. This unique characteristic leads to significant technical challenges in making rapid gross alpha measurements in the presence of the overwhelming beta, gamma, as well as dissolved sodium salt in these HLW matrices. Conventional radioanalytical techniques, such as liquid scintillation analysis or gas flow proportional counting require significant radiochemistry preparation prior to the radiometric measurements for gross alpha activity. These required pretreatments render these technologies untenable for rapid quantification of gross alpha activity that could be required to support on or at-line measurements ensuring a waste stream will meet regulatory requirements. The radiation measurement properties of Tensioned Metastable Fluid Detectors (TMFDs) have been studied by Purdue University’s Taleyarkhan research group for well over a decade. Fluids tensioned to the appropriate degree will rupture when struck by radiation, resulting in a measurable cavitation event. The negative pressure generating this tension can be adjusted by centrifugal rotation or by acoustic means in such a way that these cavitation events can be generated from alpha radiation but will not be generated by beta or gamma radiation. Purdue University and the Savannah River National Laboratory are currently collaborating to develop a gamma/beta blind, spectroscopic alpha measurement system based on the Tensioned Metastable Fluid Detector technology to provide a potential solution for performing rapid gross alpha measurements on these high gamma/beta sample matrices. Measurements using the Indirect Drive Acoustically Tensioned Metastable Fluid Detectors developed as part of this collaboration were performed with an alpha emitting radionuclide. Successful determination of gross alpha activity was observed, indicating a potential pathway for rapid gross alpha measurements in remote-handled shielded cells or in process situations requiring online alpha monitoring. Measurements using this system have been conducted on high beta activity solutions, demonstrating the beta blind capability of this system. Measurements are currently underway to test the system’s capability to measure gross alpha activity on Savannah River Site high level waste high Cs-137 samples that have been measured by the SRNL radiochemistry team. Performance Evaluation of an Additively Manufactured ultra-High Operating Temperature SiC Solar-Thermal Air Receiver (HOTSSTAR) Test Module

Increasing operating temperatures of solar receivers is paramount to the efficiency of concentrated solar thermal and solar power systems. GE Aerospace Research in collaboration with Heliogen Inc and Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) is engaged in the development of ultra-High Operating Temperature SiC-matrix Solar Thermal Air Receiver (HOTSSTAR) enabled by additive manufacturing. HOTSSTAR goal is to demonstrate SiC receiver with air exit temperatures up to 1100oC. We discuss fabrication and on-sun test results of a prototype 50kWth test module. The receiver architecture is based on a radial airflow design and consists of a series of radial SiC receiver sectors organized around central absorber. These components were fabricated using binder-jet printed SiC followed by melt-infiltration reaction bonding process. To enhance the thermo-mechanical reliability of SiC test articles in thermal gradient/ shock environment of the application, the components were laminated with GE’s MI SiC CMC. A dedicated test facility was constructed at SNL Solar Tower to evaluate the operational performance of HOTSSTAR module under solar fluxes >200 W/cm2. We report on our final 50kW test module fabrication, integration at the test facility at Sandia, and discuss on-sun test results. We compare the performance of HOTSSTAR module relative to our model predictions.

Ultra-High Operation Temperature SiC-matrix Solar Thermal Air Receiver (HOTSSTAR) enabled by additive manufacturing: Test Facility & Performance Evaluations

Solar Heat for Industrial Processes (SHIP) cavity receivers are capable of generating electricity or industrial process heat by absorbing thermal energy from solar radiation, focused on a small area. The concentration of solar radiation on the small area of the receiver enables the achievement of high temperatures (ranging from 400°C to 1,100°C) of a working fluid, thus making the SHIP technology thermodynamically comparable with conventional power plants. A volumetric receiver consists of a porous structure-generally made of silicon carbide or metal, which absorbs solar radiation and converts it into heat energy. Heat energy from the porous materials is then transferred to the fluid following through them. A volumetric receiver acts as a convective heat exchanger, transferring heat to the fluid through convection. Open-loop volumetric receivers work with air at atmospheric pressure and are suitable for single-cycle or multi-cycle energy plants. A Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) approach was used to develop a test bed at Sandia national Laboratories (SNL) capable of demonstrating an open-loop volumetric air receiver developed by General Electric Aerospace (GE Aerospace). This paper presents the development of the various MBSE methods, test bed, and testing operations for the GE air receiver, which was experimentally demonstrated to achieve 1,350°C for over 3 hours of operation and an approximate 70% receiver efficiency. By being able to achieve such high temperatures >1,000°C, this work provides the potential to support many SHIP industrial use cases.

MODEL DEVELOPMENT AND VERIFICATION OF A 1,350°C AIR RECEIVER TEST SYSTEM

Open-loop volumetric receivers work with air at atmospheric pressure and are suitable for single-cycle or multicycle power plants. A novel additively manufactured (AM) silicon carbide (SiC), ceramic matrix composite (CMC) volumetric receiver was developed that consisted of a lattice structure, which absorbs solar radiation and converts it into heat energy. Heat energy from the porous receiver was transferred to heated ambient air. The receiver acted as a convective heat exchanger, transferring heat to the fluid through convection. Engineering was facilitated to develop a high-temperature air receiver test bed at Sandia national Laboratories (SNL) capable of demonstrating a 50kWth open-loop volumetric SiC air receiver module developed by General Electric Aerospace Research (GE Aerospace). This paper presents the development of the high temperature AM SiC-CMC air receiver, the test bed, and the first testing operations of this device, which was experimentally demonstrated to achieve 1,350°C for over 3.5 hours of operation, based on input flux levels of 67–91 W/cm2 0.5-2.5 kg/s flow rates. From the test campaign results, based on the measured convective heat transfer to the airflow and bounded radiative-loss assumptions, the solar-thermal efficiency of HOTSSTAR test module was estimated to be approximately as high as 74% for representative test conditions.
