Characterization of Properties of Laser Powder Bed Fusion 3D-Printed Inconel 718 for Centrifugal Turbomachinery Applications

Here, this paper presents the results of a comprehensive effort to characterize the properties of Inconel 718 produced by a form of laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing (AM) or 3D-printing, subsequently subjected to hot isostatic pressing (HIP) and heat treatment according to standards F3055-14a and AMS 5663, respectively. Material property data, while broadly available for traditional Inconel 718 presentations (e.g. forgings or castings), is currently lacking for the 3D-printed material. It is expected that while limited in size, the experimental data sets presented provide sufficient information to glean the capability of LPBF Inconel 718. These include: 1) Chemical composition, electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), and x-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (XEDS) characterization of 3D-printed material structure; 2) Tensile properties — 0.2% yield stress, ultimate stress, modulus of elasticity, and elongation to failure — based on 108 samples, as functions of temperature and sample print orientation; 3) Creep rupture data including the Larson-Miller parameter, based on 21 samples; and 4) High cycle fatigue data based on 21 samples as a function of temperature. Results are compared to available standards and/or data for forged, cast, and other AM Inconel 718. A key observation of this study, based on the EBSD results, is that while the material appears to approach full recrystallization following heat treatment, there is a detectable fraction of the material that does not fully recrystallize, resulting in a material with mechanical properties (e.g. yield stress, creep rupture) measurably lower than those of forgings, but higher than those of castings.

Ultra-Fine Centrifugal Concentration of Bastnaesite Ore

Historically, the ability to effectively separate carbonate gangue from bastnaesite via flotation has frequently proven to be challenging without sacrificing significant rare earth oxide (REO) grade or recovery. However, in light of the fact that the rare earth bearing minerals often exhibit higher specific gravities than the carbonate gangue, the possibility exists that the use of gravity separation could be used to achieve such a selective separation. This however is complicated by the fact that, in cases such as this study when the liberation size is finer than 50 µm, most traditional gravity separation methods become increasingly challenging. The purposes of this study is to determine the applicability of gravity concentrators to beneficiate bastnaesite from deleterious calcite bearing flotation feed material. Via the use of a UF Falcon, it was possible to achieve rougher gravity REO recoveries approaching the upper 80% range while rejecting on the order of 30% of the total calcium. In terms of purely REO recovery, this represents a significant improvement over results obtained via a traditional Falcon in previously reported studies.

Method of construction for internally cooled diaphragms for centrifugal compressor

An internally-cooled compressor is provided including a casing and a diaphragm disposed in the casing. The diaphragm includes a diaphragm box defining a plurality of box channels and a bulb defining a plurality of bulb channels. A plurality of return channel vanes connect the diaphragm box and bulb in fluid communication, such that each return channel vane defines a plurality of return vane conduits coupled in fluid communication with the plurality of box channels and the plurality of bulb channels thereby forming a section of a cooling pathway. The cooling pathway is configured such that a cooling agent introduced from an external coolant source into the diaphragm box and flowing through a box channel flows through a return vane conduit into and through a bulb channel and back through another return vane conduit into another box channel before flowing back to the external coolant source.

Vibroacoustic Process Monitoring of 5-Stage Centrifugal Contactors

Vibroacoustic monitoring was investigated to aid in informing process operators with parameters regarding aqueous separation techniques. These techniques have a wide range of applications including nuclear fuel reprocessing. A small-scale solvent extraction system was set up with five magnetic drive contactors and two piston pumps to collect realistic operation. Vibration sensors were placed on three of the contactors and both pumps, and a microphone was placed near the system. Contactor rotational speed and pump flow rate were varied with known values to compare against measured vibroacoustic signatures. Spectral analysis allowed for the determination of contactor rotational speed and the ratio of organic to aqueous flow rate, an important parameter for ensuring optimal extraction. Vibration metrics such as kurtosis and crest factor provided additional details regarding individual rotational speeds and have potential in examination of faults for predictive maintenance. Overall, results indicate the capability of vibroacoustic monitoring to improve operator awareness and process outcomes.

Scalable Enrichment of 48 Ca at the Solid/liquid Interface by Chemical and Electrochemical Methods

This award targets to develop methods to enrich 48 Ca, which is a critical isotope for synthesizing superheavy elements and testing the standard model through neutrinoless double beta decay. The team first tested chemical exchange-based separation between solids and liquids, which is based on the free energy change due to the different vibrational frequencies caused by Ca isotopes in a material. However, the separation factor (alpha), which is defined as the ratio of 40 Ca/ 48 Ca ratios in the two phases, only reach ~1.01. The team then developed liquid centrifugation-based isotope separation, where a Ca salt aqueous solution is centrifuged at a speed of ~60 kRPM, and 48 Ca is enriched at the bottom of a centrifuge tube due to its larger mass. A high α of ~1.2-1.4 is achieved for 40 Ca/ 48 Ca at 40 °C. This method is further approved to be generic for any isotope that can be dissolved in a liquid solution or form liquid chemicals near room temperature. The experimental results also align well with modeling prediction. The team further develop a model to evaluate isotope separation in countercurrent liquid centrifugation. The team found that the countercurrent configuration can also enhance isotope separation in liquids, similar with gas centrifugation, which boost separation for isotopes which are difficult to be gasified near room temperature.

Synthesis and characterization of polylactic acid microspheres via emulsion-based processing

Polylactic acid (PLA) microspheres are primarily used in drug delivery applications and rarely manufactured commercially. In encapsulation, the drug encapsulation and microsphere synthesis process happen simultaneously. Simultaneous synthesis necessitates conditions that ensure the drugs to be encapsulated remain viable in the synthesis process. Here, in the present work, solid pure PLA microspheres are prepared using a repeatable centrifugal mixing method to create a single emulsion system. A planetary thinky mixer is used to achieve centrifugal mixing. PLA acts as the dispersed phase of the emulsion, whereas Polyvinyl alcohol (emulsifier) dissolved in deionized water serves as the bulk phase. The emulsions are stirred for about 4 min at 2000 rpm. Microspheres prepared by mechanical mixing are compared with microspheres prepared by centrifugal mixing. The microspheres prepared by centrifugal mixing proved to be narrower and closer to a normal distribution with a mean size (D x 50) of 30 microns. The size distribution of planetary mixed microspheres did not change from one batch to another.
