Halide perovskites as disposable epitaxial templates for the phase-selective synthesis of lead sulfochloride nanocrystals

Colloidal chemistry grants access to a wealth of materials through simple and mild reactions. However, even few elements can combine in a variety of stoichiometries and structures, potentially resulting in impurities or even wrong products. Similar issues have been long addressed in organic chemistry by using reaction-directing groups, that are added to a substrate to promote a specific product and are later removed. Inspired by such approach, we demonstrate the use of CsPbCl 3 perovskite nanocrystals to drive the phase-selective synthesis of two yet unexplored lead sulfochlorides: Pb 3 S 2 Cl 2 and Pb 4 S 3 Cl 2 . When homogeneously nucleated in solution, lead sulfochlorides form Pb 3 S 2 Cl 2 nanocrystals. Conversely, the presence of CsPbCl 3 triggers the formation of Pb 4 S 3 Cl 2 /CsPbCl 3 epitaxial heterostructures. The phase selectivity is guaranteed by the continuity of the cationic subnetwork across the interface, a condition not met in a hypothetical Pb 3 S 2 Cl 2 /CsPbCl 3 heterostructure. The perovskite domain is then etched, delivering phase-pure Pb 4 S 3 Cl 2 nanocrystals that could not be synthesized directly.

Off-Gas Design and Testing from Advanced Chlorination Process

Chlorination of Zr alloy cladding with sulfur-chloride reagents is being considered as a means of separating the main metal from alloying elements, imbedded U, actinides, and fission and activation products to purify the Zr. This would allow the Zr to be disposed of as low-level nuclear waste or possibly be recycled. A multistage process was developed that involves several steps and waste streams. Recycling of sulfur-chloride reagents S 2 Cl 2 and SOCl 2 is planned to minimize the waste stream. The generation of off-gas and entrainment of volatiles is anticipated to be minimized. However, given the complex nature of spent nuclear fuel (SNF), some volatile components will be generated, including the solvents themselves; Cl 2 used for the regeneration of S 2 Cl 2 ; volatile fission product chlorides, such as Sb and 3 H; and chlorinated alloying components, such as Sn, Nb, Fe, and Mo. This report discusses the chemical phenomena that might give rise to volatile species and their planned capture. The volatility of the transition metals will depend on their oxidation state and the compounds that are formed, such as Zr tritide. Loading radionuclides in the process off-gas will depend on the inputs to the process. For instance, processing separated Zr to reduce waste will have a much lower loading of radionuclides than if alternative chlorination were used for decladding SNF. Much of the volatile process streams will be part of the solvent recycling, which may involve online scrubbing. Generally, a caustic scrubber should be included in the off-gas to remove acidic vapors (e.g., Cl 2 , SOCl 2 ). The decontamination procedures for removing these species could involve pretreatment (i.e., heating) options or reduction by contact with H 2 . This report discusses these options along with a framework for testing these alternatives in future experiments. Technologies for off-gas capture will leverage those developed in the Materials Recovery and Waste Forms program.

Structure, Morphology, and Photovoltaic Implications of Halide Alloying in Lead-Free Cs 3 Sb 2 Cl x I 9-x 2D-Layered Perovskites

Compositional tuning has been a major driving force behind the excellent optoelectronic properties observed in typical Pb-based perovskites. For lead-free perovskite derivatives, a challenge to understanding the connection between compositional tuning and intrinsic optoelectronic properties, hence a barrier towards boosting their performance, comes from the fact that multiple crystalline substructures can form based on composition, film processing, or both. Especially with lower dimensional (0D, 1D, 2D) substructures, the particular polymorph present in the film can be a greater determinant of optoelectronic properties than the composition itself. Herein, we report a simple method to alloy the halide site in all-inorganic lead-free Cs 3 Sb 2 I 9 films while maintaining a consistent 2D-layered substructure, as a means to independently study the photovoltaic implications of halide substitution. We use a broad suite of spectroscopy and device measurements to identify an optimal stoichiometric substitution of chloride for iodide (~ 8 mol%, measured) that balances both intrinsic and bulk optoelectronic properties to achieve a top power conversion efficiency of 2.2%. This work underscores the importance of controlling substructure while investigating the impacts of compositional tuning for the development of lead-free perovskites, and more broadly validates the approach towards realizing lead-free alternative perovskite solar technologies.

Synthesis, characterization, and theoretical analysis of a plutonyl phosphine oxide complex

The interplay of bond strength and covalency are examined in AnO 2 Cl 2 (OPcy 3 ) 2 (An = Pu, U) complexes. The synthesis of trans-PuO 2 Cl 2 (OPcy 3 ) 2 , 1-Pu, has been carried out and confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction along with UV-vis-NIR, and 31 P NMR spectroscopies. Theoretical analysis finds that despite a higher calculated covalency for the Pu–Cl interaction, the Pu–OPcy 3 interaction is stronger due to the accumulation of electron density in the interatomic region. As a result, the coordination of equatorial ligands slightly decreases the strength of the Pu≡O yl interactions relative to the free gas phase (PuO 2 ) 2+ ion.

A Diazo Linker Ligand Promotes Flexibility and Induced Fit Binding in a Microporous Copper Coordination Network

Abstract Flexible organic linkers represent an intuitive and effective strategy to design flexible metal–organic materials. We report herein a systematic study concerning the effect of varying the central bond of mixed pyridyl‐benzoate linkers, L, upon the flexibility of three isostructuralkddtopology microporous coordination networks (CNs) of formula ML 2 :X‐kdd‐1‐Cu,1= L = (E)‐4‐(pyridin‐4‐yldiazenyl)benzoate;X‐kdd‐2‐Cu,2= L = (E)‐4‐(2‐(pyridin‐4‐yl)vinyl)benzoate; the previously reportedX‐kdd‐3‐Cu,3= L = 4‐(pyridin‐4‐ylethynyl)benzoate. As revealed by single crystal x‐ray diffraction (SCXRD) and gas sorption studies,X‐kdd‐1‐Cu, exhibited gate‐opening during CO 2 and hydrocarbon (C2 and C8) sorption experiments whereas the other two CNs did not. Insight into these phase transformations was gained from in situ variable‐pressure and variable temperature powder X‐ray diffraction (PXRD), SCXRD, and modeling. Rotation of ligand1around the diazo bond, torsion angle changes between phenyl and carboxylate moieties, and deformation of the Cu‐based rod building blocks enabled activatedX‐kdd‐1‐Cuto form new phases with C8 isomers and CH 2 Cl 2 , CH 2 Cl 2 inducing contraction of the activated phase. Computational studies suggest that1enables flexibility thanks to its lower barrier of deformation versus2or3. This study teaches that diazo moieties could offer a general strategy to enhance the flexibility of CNs.

Distinct Bimetallic Cooperativity Among Water Reduction Catalysts Containing [Co III Co III ], [Ni II Ni II ], and [Zn II Zn II ] Cores

We report three binuclear species [LCo III 2 (μ-Pz) 2 ](ClO 4 ) 3 (1), [LNi II 2 (CH 3 OH) 2 Cl 2 ]ClO 4 (2), and [LZn II 2 Cl 2 ]PF 6 (3) supported by the deprotonated form of the ligand 2,6-bis[bis(2-pyridylmethyl) amino-methyl]-4-methylphenol were synthesized, structurally characterized as solids and in solution, and had their electrochemical and spectroscopic behavior established. Species 1–3 had their water reduction ability studied aiming to interrogate the possible cooperative catalytic activity between two neighboring metal centers. Species 1 and 2 reduced H 2 O to H 2 effectively at an applied potential of -1.6 V Ag/AgCl , yielding turnover numbers of 2,820 and 2,290, respectively, after 30 minutes. Species 3 lacked activity and was used as a negative control to eliminate the possibility of ligand-based catalysis. Pre- and post-catalytic data gave evidence of the molecular nature of the process within the timeframe of the experiments. Species 1 showed structural, rather than electronic cooperativity, while species 2 displayed no obvious cooperativity. DFT methods complemented the experimental results determining plausible mechanisms.

ICP etching of GaN microstructures in a Cl 2 –Ar plasma with subnanometer-scale sidewall surface roughness

In this work, substrate temperature, RF power, and ICP power were investigated for their effects on GaN micropillar sidewall roughness and etch characteristics. Elevated substrate temperature was shown to improve the sidewall etch morphology at low RF powers (reduced physical bombardment) and low ICP powers (lower plasma densities). Increased lateral etching is observed with both increased ICP power and substrate temperature, which both act to increase the chemical component of the etch. Etch conditions with a high chemical driving force resulted in faceting along the a-plane on the sidewalls. This faceting produced extremely smooth surfaces with root-meansquare roughness (R q ) as low as 0.20 nm which is comparable to typical epitaxy-ready surfaces and smaller than the a-plane lattice spacing of 0.3186 nm. The smooth surfaces produced in this study enable possibilities for laser facets or for new device structures that require high quality surfaces for GaN regrowth.

On the Use of Aqueous Metal-Aqua p K a Values as a Descriptor of Lewis Acidity

The behavior of Lewis acidic metal ions in multimetallic systems has become a subject of intense interest in recent years. Parametrizing the behavior of these ions in non-aqueous conditions, commonly used in the field, is challenging due to the lack of direct measures of the Lewis acidity of metal ions in polar organic solvents. Here, we report the use of triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO) as a 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) probe to quantify the Lewis acidity of a library of metal triflate salts using the Gutmann-Beckett method. Plots of the pK a values of the corresponding metal-aqua species, [M(H 2 O) m ] n+ , measured in H 2 O vs. the 31 P NMR shifts of TPPO in the presence of these metals in deuterated acetonitrile (d3-MeCN) and deuterated dichloromethane (CD 2 Cl 2 ) display tightly co-linear relationships, suggesting similar behavior for these ions in water, d 3 -MeCN, and CD 2 Cl 2 . This collinearity reinforces the utility of the common approach of using the aqueous pK a values as a descriptor of Lewis acidity, regardless of the solvent used in the immediate experiments, and provides an insight into the usefulness of this descriptor in wide-ranging applications. Titration studies in d 3 -MeCN suggest 1:1 binding of TPPO with monovalent ions, greater than 1:1 binding with divalent ions, and formation of multiple species with the highly Lewis acidic trivalent ions. Altogether, these data suggest that both aqueous pK a values and other single-measurement descriptors, while useful, provide only a snapshot of the influence of Lewis acidity on multimetallic chemical systems.

Employing Long-Range Inductive Effects to Modulate Metal-to-Ligand Charge Transfer Photoluminescence in Homoleptic Cu(I) Complexes

Four Cu(I) bis(phenanthroline) photosensitizers formulated from a new ligand structural motif (Cu1-Cu4) coded according to their 2,9-substituents, were synthesized, structurally characterized, and fully evaluated using steady-state and time-resolved absorption and photoluminescence (PL) measurements as well as electrochemistry. The 2,9-disubstituted-3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline ligands feature the following six-membered ring systems prepared through photochemical synthesis: 4,4-dimethylcyclohexyl (1), tetrahydro-2H-pyran-4-yl (2), tetrahydro-2H-thiopyran-4-yl (3), and 4,4-difluorocyclohexyl (4). Universally, these Cu(I) metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) chromophores display excited state lifetimes on the microseconds time scale at room temperature, including the three longest-lived homoleptic cuprous phenanthroline excited states measured to date in deaerated CH 2 Cl 2 , τ = 2.5 to 4.3 μs. This series of molecules also feature high PL quantum efficiencies (ΦPL = 5.3 to 12% in CH 2 Cl 2 ). Temperature-dependent PL lifetime experiments confirmed that all these molecules exhibit reverse intersystem crossing and display thermally activated delayed PL from a 1 MLCT excited state lying slightly above the 3 MLCT state, 1050 – 1490 cm -1 . Ultrafast and conventional transient absorption measurements confirmed that the PL originates from the MLCT excited state, which remains sterically arrested, preventing an excessive flattening distortion even when dissolved in Lewis basic CH 3 CN. Combined PL and electrochemical data provided evidence that Cu1-Cu4 are highly potent photoreductants (E ox * = -1.73 to -1.62 V vs. Fc +/o in CH 3 CN), whose potentials are altered solely based on which heteroatoms or substituents are resident on the 2,9-appended ring derivatives. It is proposed that long-range electronic inductive effects are responsible for the systematic modulation observed in the PL spectra, excited state lifetimes, as well as the ground state absorption spectra and redox potentials. Cu1-Cu4 quantitatively follow the energy gap law, correlating well with structurally related cuprous phenanthrolines and are also shown to triplet photosensitize the excited states of 9,10-diphenylanthracene with bimolecular rate constants ranging from 1.61 to 2.82 × 10 8 M –1 s –1 . Furthermore, the ability to tailor both photophysical and electrochemical properties using long-range inductive effects imposed by the 2,9-ring platforms advocates new directions for future MLCT chromophore discovery.

Tuning Anisotropic Optical Properties of Inorganic and Hybrid Organic–Inorganic MXenes via Topochemical Surface Modification

Surface groups are central to the properties of MXenes, yet their role in optical anisotropy remains largely unexplored. Here, we use a topochemical route to synthesize single crystals of stacked Ti 3 C 2 Cl 2 and hybrid organic–inorganic MXenes (h-MXenes) with lateral sizes of 38–75 μm, rotational registry, and tunable interlayer spacing. Solid-state NMR spectroscopy shows that topochemical substitution generates mixed amido, imido, and hydride surface motifs, which modify the electronic structure of the Ti 3 C 2 inorganic core. Imaging spectroscopic ellipsometry with micron-scale spatial resolution enables reconstruction of the complex dielectric tensor of individual multilayer crystals. Ti 3 C 2 Cl 2 exhibits a type-II hyperbolicity above 930 nm, whereas h-MXenes do not display hyperbolicity within the measured 300–1700 nm window, instead showing reduced in-plane conductivity, suppressed out-of-plane light absorption, and a chain-length-dependent blue shift of a near-infrared absorption feature. These results demonstrate topochemical surface modification as a direct handle for engineering MXenes as surface-programmable optical media.

Isolation and characterization of a californium metallocene

Californium (Cf) is currently the heaviest element accessible above microgram quantities. Cf isotopes impose severe experimental challenges due to their scarcity and radiological hazards. Consequently, chemical secrets ranging from the accessibility of 5f/6d valence orbitals to engage in bonding, the role of spin–orbit coupling in electronic structure, and reactivity patterns compared to other f elements, remain locked. Organometallic molecules were foundational in elucidating periodicity and bonding trends across the periodic table, with a twenty-first-century renaissance of organometallic thorium (Th) through plutonium (Pu) chemistry, and to a smaller extent americium (Am), transforming chemical understanding. Yet, analogous curium (Cm) to Cf chemistry has lain dormant since the 1970s. Here, we revive air-/moisture-sensitive Cf chemistry through the synthesis and characterization of [Cf(C 5 Me 4 H) 2 Cl 2 K(OEt 2 )] n from two milligrams of 249 Cf. This bent metallocene motif, not previously structurally authenticated beyond uranium (U), contains the first crystallographically characterized Cf–C bond. Analysis suggests the Cf–C bond is largely ionic with a small covalent contribution. Lowered Cf 5f orbital energy versus dysprosium (Dy) 4f in the colourless, isoelectronic and isostructural [Dy(C 5 Me 4 H) 2 Cl 2 K(OEt 2 )] n results in an orange Cf compound, contrasting with the light-green colour typically associated with Cf compounds.

Structural complexity in the f -block: small deviations of the complexation of lanthanides by O,Oʹ -diethylmonothiophosphate

Dithiophosphinic acids undergo radiolytic degradation during the extraction of actinides in used nuclear fuel. These will degrade into monothiophosphinic acids and then to phosphinic acids. To elucidate how the complexes that are formed during these radioactive separations change as the ligand degrades, the mixed donor ligand O,O′- diethylmonothiophosphate is chosen as an analog for the monothiophosphinic intermediate. Herein, the monothiophosphate complexes Ln 2 (OPS(OEt) 2 ) 6 (H 2 O) 8 (Ln = La) (La 2 L 6 H 2 O), Ln 2 (OPS(OEt) 2 ) 6 (EtOH) 4 (Ln = La) (La 2 L 6 EtOH), K 2 [Ln(OPS(OEt) 2 ) 5 (H 2 O) 2 ]·H 2 O·CH 2 Cl 2 , (Ln = Ce) (CeL 5 -α), K 2 [Ln(OPS(OEt) 2 ) 5 (H 2 O) 2 ]·H 2 O·CH 2 Cl 2 , (Ln = Pr) (PrL 5 -β), K[Ln(OPS(OEt) 2 ) 4 (H 2 O) 3 ], (Ln = Pr, Sm-Er) (ML 4 ), and K 3 [Ln(OPS(OEt) 2 ) 6 ], (Ln = Dy) (DyL 6 ) were synthesized and characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction and optical spectroscopy. Although the lanthanides contract in a nearly linear fashion, the structural changes observed as the f-block is traversed in these compounds are not necessarily a hard line but more so a blend of different structure types possible for each f-element. Furthermore, comparison of the Ln−O bond lengths shows a nearly linear contraction, but the Ln−S bond lengths do not monotonically decrease because of the hard Lewis acidity of the Ln 3+ cations.

Codimension-two spiral spin liquid in the effective honeycomb-lattice compound Cs 3 ⁢Fe 2 ⁢Cl 9

A codimension-two spiral spin liquid is a correlated paramagnetic state with one-dimensional ground state degeneracy hosted within a three-dimensional lattice. Here, in this work, via neutron scattering experiments and numerical simulations, we establish the existence of a codimension-two spiral spin liquid in the effective honeycomb-lattice compound Cs 3 ⁢Fe 2⁢ Cl 9 , which demonstrates an alternate path to spiral spin liquids by overcoming the long-standing impediment of weak further-neighbor interactions. In the long-range ordered regime, competing spiral and spin density wave orders emerge as a function of applied magnetic field, among which a possible order-by-disorder transition is identified.

Chlorine gas and anion radical reactivity in molten salts and the link to chlorobasicity

Next-generation nuclear power plants may include exciting novel designs in which molten salts are the coolant or a combination of the coolant and fuel. Whereas it is straightforward to see why having a low volatility coolant can be advantageous for safety, much is not understood about the production of volatile halogen gases as a result of radiation and even less is known about the distribution of these species at and away from interfaces. Using first principles molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate the product of the disproportionation reaction between chlorine anion radicals (nominally Cl 2 ˙ − ) in the bulk and slab configurations. We find that the product depends on the chlorobasicity of the medium. For example, in ZnCl 2 , Cl 2 forms, but in a eutectic mixture of LiCl and KCl, Cl 3 − is formed as a product. We also find that Cl 3 − prefers to form at the vapor interface and this may have implications for corrosion and reactivity. Furthermore, the mechanisms of the mobility of Cl 2 and Cl 3 − are radically different, the first one being vehicular and the second Grotthus-like. Chlorobasicity is linked to the electronic structure of the host melt; ZnCl 2 forms extended networks along which metal ions and anionic counterions have significant electronic orbital overlap forming long, linear, molecular-like constructs; the opposite is true for the alkali metal eutectic salt.
