A Large-Scale Analysis to Optimize the Control and V2V Communication Protocols for CDA Agreement-Seeking Cooperation

Cooperative driving automation (CDA) Class C, agreement-seeking cooperation, is an innovative and practical solution that can promote cooperation among general passenger vehicles on the road. However, more comprehensive studies are needed before establishing the standard protocols of agreement-seeking cooperation, such as communication frequency and the duration of cooperation. Here, this article presents an initiative study on the impacts of communication capabilities on agreement-seeking cooperation. Through a large-scale analysis by regulating vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication metrics, this work suggests desirable system parameters that can maximize the benefits of cooperation and ensure reliable operability while avoiding exhaustive communication loads. As the first step, an example agreement-seeking cooperation system is created for a car-following scenario, including decision-making and control algorithms for autonomous vehicles. Then, software-in-the-loop tests explore the performance of the developed system as it encounters various communication risks, such as latency and message packet drops. The system performance metrics are evaluated from various angles, including the time consumed for the agreement-seeking process, cooperation ratio, and the ratio of faulty cooperation. Energy saving from the cooperation is assessed by using simulation software that can run multiple high-fidelity vehicle models simultaneously. Based on the analyses, this article suggests the V2V communication requirements for the reliable operation of CDA agreement-seeking, which can be referred to when developing the standard protocols of agreement-seeking cooperation.

Logically Parallel Communication for Fast MPI+Threads Applications

Supercomputing applications are increasingly adopting the MPI+threads programming model over the traditional "MPI everywhere" approach to better handle the disproportionate increase in the number of cores compared with other on-node resources. In practice, however, most applications observe a slower performance with MPI+threads primarily because of poor communication performance. Recent research efforts on MPI libraries address this bottleneck by mapping logically parallel communication, that is, operations that are not subject to MPI's ordering constraints to the underlying network parallelism. Domain scientists, however, typically do not expose such communication independence information because the existing MPI-3.1 standard's semantics can be limiting. Researchers had initially proposed user-visible endpoints to combat this issue, but such a solution requires intrusive changes to the standard (new APIs). The upcoming MPI-4.0 standard, on the other hand, allows applications to relax unneeded semantics and provides them with many opportunities to express logical communication parallelism. Here in this article, we show how MPI+threads applications can achieve high performance with logically parallel communication. Through application case studies, we compare the capabilities of the new MPI-4.0 standard with those of the existing one and user-visible endpoints (upper bound). Logical communication parallelism can boost the overall performance of an application by over 2x.

Messaging for Impact: Behavioral Science-Based Communication Strategies to Advance Energy Efficiency

Currently, five legal authorities require U.S. federal agencies to purchase energy-efficient products. However, compliance with these requirements has consistently been low (~55%). Recent surveys indicate that energy efficiency requirements are not communicated properly within federal agencies and energy-efficiency is not a top priority. In the constantly evolving energy industry, with many solutions for a clean energy future, effective communication methods are vital for widespread adoption of energy efficiency. We have been conducting experiments within the U.S. federal sector that test the effectiveness of messaging strategies developed by using behavioral science principles like loss aversion, framing, and herd behavior. This will identify effective communications methods that encourage energy efficiency adoption. In this study, we measure the effectiveness of different communication strategies by monitoring the web traffic of hyperlinks placed within our digital communications and outreach materials. To determine effective strategies that influence federal buyer behavior, the web traffic from subjects that received the behavioral science-based messaging (treatment group) is compared to that from subjects that received regular messaging (control group) for each of the strategies. This paper provides an overview of the behavioral science principles that we applied, data collection methods, and results of our analysis. Since the lack of effective communication of energy-efficiency policies is also a common problem in the private sector, the messaging strategies developed in this study can be applicable to other large private sector institutions

Quantifying Graph Uncertainty from Communication Data

Graphs are a widely used abstraction for representing a variety of important real-world problems including emulating cyber networks for situational awareness, or studying social networks to understand human interactions or pandemic spread. Communication data is often converted into graphs to help understand social and technical patterns in the underlying communication data. However, prior to this project, little work had been performed analyzing how best to develop graphs from such data. Thus, many critical, national security problems were being performed against graph representations of questionable quality. Herein, we describe our analyses that were precursors to our final statistically grounded technique for creating static graph snapshots from a stream of communication events. The first analyzes the statistical distribution properties of a variety of real-world communication datasets generally fit best by Pareto, log normal, and extreme value distributions. The second derives graph properties that can be estimated given the expected statistical distribution for communication events and the communication interval to be viewed node observability, edge observability, and expected accuracy of node degree. Unfortunately, as that final process is under review for publication, we can't publish it here at this time.

Performance Evaluation of High-Temperature Ultrasonic Communication System

Ultrasonic communication is a technique that allows transmitting information through a solid material such as tubes or bars using high-frequency elastic waves. The communication channels often extend into a high-temperature range in the field of power, oil, or nuclear industry. When the temperature is taken into consideration, the ultrasonic wave propagation through the solid channel is complex and unpredictable. It is necessary to study the influence of temperature on the ultrasonic guided wave to improve ultrasonic communication. In this study, a temperature control system is assembled to adjust the temperature of a steel pipe channel ranging from room temperature to 150 degrees C. The temperature performance evaluation is conducted to estimate the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and bit error rate (BER) of transferring the ultrasonic signal. The work aims to develop a reliable ultrasonic communication system in a high-temperature environment. The system temperature can be maintained at 150 degrees C and the LiNbO3 transducers are used as transmitters and receivers. No power amplifier is used in the communication system. The high-temperature ultrasonic communication system (HT-UCS) is feasible at 150 degrees C and can achieve a bit rate of 10 kbps without any error.

Simultaneous classical and quantum communication scheme based on coherent detection

An improved coherent communication scheme is provided. The coherent communication scheme encodes both classical and quantum information simultaneously using isolated groups of states: classical information is represented by different groups and can be decoded deterministically; and quantum information is represented by highly overlapped states within the same group, thus guaranteeing security. Decoding includes projecting the detection results at the receiver to one of the distinguishable encoding groups first, which allows the classical information to be read out, and then generating a quantum key from the residual randomness. This communications scheme enables simultaneous classical communication and QKD over the same communication channel using the same transmitter and receiver, opening the door to operate QKD in the background of classical communication and at negligible costs.

Multimodal communication system

A multimodal communication system includes a vehicle controller that controls one or more systems or subsystems of an unmanned vehicle. The communication controller manages communication and logical access to the unmanned vehicle. One or more sensors in communication with the communication controller detects and measures physical properties in proximity to the unmanned vehicle. Transceivers receive the unmanned vehicle commands that are transmitted simultaneously or concurrently and a monotonic generator generates a monotonic object each time the unmanned vehicle's operating state changes. The communication controller executes the first unmanned vehicle command received that has the correct cryptographic hash validating knowledge of the unmanned vehicle's current operating state.

Impact of Open Communication Networks on Load Frequency Control with Plug-In Electric Vehicles by Cyber-Physical Dynamic Co-Simulation

With the increasing electrification of the transportation sector to achieve the carbon neutrality objective, despite the challenges of charging electric vehicles (EV), there are also opportunities through smart charging EVs to improve system frequency stability; however, EV control technologies might require nontraditional communication support. This paper investigates the impacts of communication variations of EV on power system load frequency control through a cyber-physical dynamic system (CPDS) co-simulation. Here, the CPDS is built upon our previously developed transmission-and-distribution dynamic co-simulation model with the added communication variation functions (i.e., delay and packet loss). The case studies consider multiple communication variation scenarios when the system experiences an N-1 generation trip contingency. The scenarios include communication delays and packet loss using both homogeneous and heterogeneous assumptions. The outcomes of this work can help improve EV frequency regulation services and provide robust and effective tests for different load frequency control algorithms of the future power systems.

An agent-based modeling tool supporting bioenergy and bio-product community communication regarding cellulosic bioeconomy development

The emergence of the cellulosic bioeconomy requires not only adequate technological, economic, and policy advances, but also effective communication and coordination among the multiple stakeholders in the bioeconomy community. Aiming to facilitate stakeholder communication and collaboration for cellulosic bioeconomy growth, an agent-based model is developed as a community communication tool in this study. The tool simulates the behaviors and interactions of key stakeholders, as well as the responses and interactions between the stakeholders and biophysical, socioeconomic, and environmental conditions. The agent behavior rules are developed and validated based on behavior and economic theories and information attained from a stakeholder focus group study and a land use survey. A pilot study in a Central Illinois watershed shows stakeholder synergies, i.e., positive feedback loops across multiple stakeholders. The modeling tool's role in facilitating community communication is demonstrated via the focus group study. A comparison of policy scenarios suggests that the cellulosic bioeconomy development is fastest under a portfolio of policies combining the views of the multiple stakeholders. Critically, subsidy for small-scale bio-facilities is essential as it rapidly initializes an early market for cellulosic feedstocks and the adoption of Miscanthus. As a result, the communication tool is applied to bringing stakeholders and researchers together to develop shared visions, assess barriers, and explore solution portfolios to initialize and speed up the regional cellulosic bioeconomy.

Ultrasonic Communication in Solid Channels using OFDM

Using an ultrasonic signal for communication is an alternate solution when electromagnetic waves are not feasible for carrying the information through the channel. We can use the ultrasonic signal to conduct communication in different types of media such as solid, liquid, and gas. In this study, we use ultrasound for communication through a metal plate channel. A metal plate is a highly dispersive and frequency selective channel with a severe multipath effect. The OFDM modulation method is customized for the ultrasonic communication channel to enhance communication reliability and reduce the bit error rate. With the channel frequency response, we adaptively map the transmitted information to optimize the selection of subcarriers frequency bands for the highest possible throughput.

Software-Defined Ultrasonic Communication System Based on Time-reversal Signal Processing

Ultrasonic communication through solid channels suffers from channel dispersion, attenuation, and multipath effect. For example, in elbow shape pipes or complex structures, the elastic waves are reflected and reverberated in multipath resulting in a major dispersion of the signals. In solid channels such as flat bar, multipath propagation is the main reason for bit-wavelet spreading and intersymbol interference (ISI). The conventional modulation method like OOK (on-off-keying) or PSK (phase-shift-keying) fails to provide a useful Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). Time-reversal (TR) signal processing method is a promising technique that can compress the spreading of the bit-wavelet and strengthen the peak signal energy on the receiver. In this study, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) using ABAQUS software tools is used to characterize the bit-wavelet spreading effect caused by dispersive communication channels. Also, this study presents the impact of TR ultrasonic communication as a function of excitation pulse width, channel length, and carrier frequency through a flat-bar channel. A Software-Defined System-on-Chip (SD-SoC) platform is examined as a viable solution for the low-complexity and energy-efficient ultrasonic communication system. The proposed TR based SD-SoC ultrasonic communication system can make full use of signal dispersion for peak performance by minimizing the ISI within a dispersive and reverberant metal channel.

A Framework for Effective Science Communication and Outreach Strategies and Dissemination of Research Findings for Marine Energy Projects

Marine energy is an emerging renewable energy industry with the potential to produce 2300 terawatt-hours per year from resources within the United States. As development and testing of marine energy devices advance, regulatory and permitting decision-makers are concerned about the uncertainty surrounding the potential environmental effects resulting from the introduction of these novel devices in coastal and riverine environments. The Triton Initiative researches and provides recommendations for environmental monitoring technologies and methods to inform industry stakeholders with the data necessary to permit the testing of marine energy systems. Effective dissemination of the research findings is essential for improving the accessibility of data to stakeholders who may use the results to inform policy decisions, yet few frameworks for conducting science communications for marine energy projects exist. In this paper, we present tools, channels, and tactics for developing a science communication framework for marine energy projects, or similar areas of study, using the Triton Initiative’s pilot science communication program as a case study. By leveraging existing bodies of work in disciplines such as communications theory, marketing, public relations, and social science, the presented framework includes audience identification and analysis; channel development, including a website, blog, newsletter, social media, and webinars and presentations; and metrics for determining success. Outcomes from one year of Triton’s case study are presented, including the most effective tactics and lessons learned.
