mada-tools: MCP servers, configurations, skills, and examples for MADA

MADA-tools (Multi-Agent Design Assistant tools) is a library for defining MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers that can be used by AI agents in the MADA project. Each MCP server provides a focused set of tools that enhances an LLM's knowledge and capabilities for a specific domain, for example, how to launch jobs with Flux versus Slurm. The library makes it easy to configure and start multiple MCP servers using configuration files or command line options. Once running, these servers are intended to be consumed by one or more agents in the MADA ecosystem. The system is designed to be extensible so that future projects can contribute their own MCP servers, skills, and toolsets.

HP-FLEX: Field demonstration of the semantics-driven configuration of a Model Predictive Control system to make heat pumps flexible

Model Predictive Control (MPC) has demonstrated significant potential for optimizing building operations and enabling demand flexibility. However, the widespread adoption of MPC is hindered by complex manual configuration and commissioning processes that must be conducted by control experts working alongside building operators. These challenges drive up costs and reduce scalability, particularly when technical human resources and building automation systems are limited, such as in small and medium commercial buildings (SMCBs). This paper demonstrates how semantic standards, specifically ASHRAE 223P, can accelerate the adoption of MPC applications for load flexibility in SMCBs. The authors present a replicable control framework, titled “HP-FLEX” that leverages a building’s semantic model to bootstrap the required data configuration for an MPC controller developed for optimizing heat pump systems as flexible grid resources. The semantic model helps streamline the deployment workflow, particularly for site setup, data/control commissioning, and model setup. This integration enhances portability, transferability, and scalability of the HP-FLEX MPC, which has been developed to support MPC-based supervisory HVAC controllers in SMCBs. Additionally, the paper details the required building and thermostat metadata information to enable the HP-FLEX MPC based on field demonstrations. The new workflow was tested in a small commercial building located in California, U.S., and demonstrated a load shifting performance of 9% based on a dynamic pricing signal that varies by the hour. This work provides a practical pathway for transitioning sophisticated building applications from custom to standardized semantic representations, supporting the broader adoption of advanced control strategies like MPC. The framework also establishes a foundation for evolving metadata requirements as applications mature while maintaining compatibility with industry standards.

Performance Evaluation of Various Configurations for Domestic Refrigerators with R600a

The increasing global focus on mitigating global warming has driven a change in refrigerant selection for domestic refrigerators. While most existing refrigerators use R-134a as their working fluid, there is a gradual shift towards R600a in newly manufactured products to minimize environmental impact. In order to design a more energy-efficient isobutane refrigerator, various configurations, including both single-evaporator and dual-evaporator cycles, were investigated. The study was conducted using a high-fidelity simulation platform, the Heat Pump Design Model (HPDM), developed and experimentally validated by the US DOE/ORNL. This platform includes detailed segment-to-segment heat exchanger model, fan model, and compressor model, utilizing refrigerant properties from REFPROP 10. A quasi-steady-state approach was employed to simulate the transient behavior and performance of a domestic refrigerator. The performance of various configurations was compared, and the effects of the refrigerant properties and operating conditions were also analyzed and discussed.

Joint cosmological fits to DESI-DR1 full-shape clustering and weak gravitational lensing in configuration space

We present a joint $3\times2$-pt cosmological analysis of auto- and cross-correlations between the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument Data Release 1 (DESI-DR1) Bright Galaxy Survey (BGS) and Luminous Red Galaxy (LRG) samples and overlapping shear measurements from the KiDS-1000, DES-Y3 and HSC-Y3 weak lensing surveys. We perform our analysis in configuration space and, in addition to the cosmic shear correlation functions for each weak lensing dataset, we fit the tangential shear of the weak lensing source galaxies around DESI lens galaxies. Finally, we make use of the anisotropic BGS and LRG clustering information by fitting the full shape of the two-point correlation function multipoles measured over the full DESI-DR1 footprint, presenting the first full-shape analysis of DESI measurements in configuration space. We find that the addition of weak lensing information serves to improve, with respect to the clustering-only case, the measurements of the power spectrum amplitude parameters $\ln(10^{10}A_{\rm{s}})$ and $σ_{12}$ by $15\%$ and $36\%$, respectively. It also improves measurements of the linear bias of the lens galaxies by $15-20\%$, depending on the tracer. Our results show excellent consistency, regardless of the weak lensing survey considered, and are furthermore consistent with a companion analysis that fits $3\times2$-pt correlations including DESI projected clustering measurements, as well as the results published by the weak lensing collaborations themselves. Our measured values for weak lensing amplitude are $S_{8}^{\mathrm{DESI\times HSC}}=0.787\pm0.020$, $S_{8}^{\mathrm{DESI\times DES}}=0.791\pm0.016$, $S_{8}^{\mathrm{DESI\times KiDS}}=0.771\pm0.017$, which are $1.9σ-2.9σ$ below the $S_8$ value preferred by Planck. Finally, our clustering-only results are in good agreement with the Fourier space full-shape analysis of all DESI tracers.

Preliminary Insights Into the Feasibility of Determining the Purification Date of Enriched Uranium by Direct Measurement of the 230 Th/ 234 U Ratio Using an All-Faraday Detector Configuration on the Neoma MC-ICP-MS

Rationale: Mass spectrometric measurement of the 230 Th/ 234 U ratio to calculate the purification age of enriched uranium is typically conducted via a combination of ion counters and faraday detectors, thus requiring an inter-detector calibration scheme. Here, our aim is to understand whether the pursuit of a simplified measurement scheme involving only faraday detectors is feasible. Methods: We investigate the possibility of determining U-Th model ages for two enriched uranium standards (NBL U630 and U850) by direct measurement of the 230 Th/ 234 U ratio (without chromatographic separation or isotope dilution) on a ThermoFisher Scientific Neoma MC-ICP-MS utilizing both solution and laser ablation (LA)-based sampling techniques and an all-faraday detector configuration. Results: For the solution mode analyses conducted on aliquots containing sub μg/mL total U, we produce composite average 230 Th/ 234 U model dates of May 19, 1988 (± 351 days), and March 26, 1961 (± 2.5 years) using the directly measured 230 Th/ 234 U ratios for the NBL U630 and U850 uranium standards, which have certified purification dates of June 6, 1988 (± 190 days), and December 31, 1957 (± 36.5 days), respectively. The ages produced by LA-based sampling of dried residues of the same standards deposited onto cotton TexWipes are less accurate and of poorer precision (June 23, 2004 ± 8.7 years for U630 and December 21, 1965 ± 7.9 years for U850) but still yield meaningful information in regards to the purification date. Conclusions: We believe that further refinement of the all faraday detector measurement approach to include development of a more robust Th/U relative sensitivity factor determination, signal cutoff selection, and data processing protocols will allow for this approach to be confidently applied to enriched uranium materials with unknown purification histories. Potential advantages of the method include the reduced sample handling and infrastructure requirements as well as the ability to simultaneously generate a broad picture of the uranium isotopic composition in tandem with the U-Th age determination.

Emergent Epitaxial Configuration of Pr 3 IrO 7 Domains via YSZ (111) Substrate

The 5d rare Earth iridate is an intriguing material with exhibiting exotic electronic and magnetic phases due to spin-orbit coupled states. Ternary iridium oxides Ln 3 IrO 7 contain an unusual Ir 5+ (5d 4 ) system, which remain a subject of active research. Fabricating epitaxial Ln 3 IrO 7 films is challenging due to substrate compatibility, but it offers a valuable platform to explore electronic and magnetic behaviors under reduced dimensionality and substrate interactions, revealing novel phenomena based on Ir 5+ (5d 4 ). In this regard, this demonstrates that Pr 3 IrO 7 with its highly anisotropic orthorhombic structure can be epitaxially grown on a cubic (111)-oriented yttrium-stabilized ZrO 2 (YSZ) substrate. Pr 3 IrO 7 film exhibits six epitaxial domains, where the (220) and (202) planes aligning epitaxially to YSZ (111) with the threefold symmetry. This diverse domain configuration in Pr 3 IrO 7 film leads to unique magnetic properties, exhibiting spin-glass-like behavior. Pr 3 IrO 7 thin film offers a platform for exploring unconventional magnetic states, and their successful heteroepitaxy on YSZ substrates opens new avenues for discovering novel physical phenomena.

Nuclear—thermal energy storage configurations for industrial combined heat and power supply—conceptual and thermodynamic study with high temperature gas-cooled reactor

Nuclear systems are promising candidates for delivering resilient heat and power for future energy security and independence. Traditionally, nuclear plants have been used for baseload electricity production and cogeneration of heat has seen relatively limited application utilizing typically only small portion of a reactor's thermal output. This paradigm may shift due to the increasing penetration of intermittent renewables and need for resource flexibility, various decarbonization efforts aimed at both electricity and heat demands, along with the perspective of small modular nuclear reactor applications, which can be sized based on local industrial needs. Here, this study provides a comprehensive guide for the nuclear and industrial sectors, emphasizing controllability in the combined heat and power configuration options for high temperature gas-cooled reactor and process steam supply. It investigates the integration of thermal energy storage to improve nuclear energy's responsiveness to varying industrial demands. The study emphasizes placing thermal energy storage between the nuclear primary loop and steam cycle to achieve greater efficiency and flexibility in power and heat output, surpassing traditional combined heat and power systems and avoiding efficiency losses seen in other thermal energy storage integration approaches.

Fuel cells for single-aisle regional aircraft: System configuration, performance and cost

A hydrogen fuel cell propelled electric aircraft can compete with incumbent turbofan technologies for single-aisle regional aircraft by coupling design of stack, air handling, thermal management, propulsion, and airframe to optimize performance. The stack operates at 95°C to facilitate heat rejection during take-off and below 75°C during cruise to extend lifetime and is oversized to satisfy power requirements at end of life. A multi-stage turbocompressor with a compression ratio >10 is selected to reach high stack power density at 11,300-m cruise altitude. The propulsion system is configured to accommodate air handling within the core duct, an inclined heat exchanger in the outer duct to limit the nacelle size, and variable area nozzles to independently control mass flows through the core and bypass ducts. The airframe is modified for maximum lift coefficient and longer balanced field length for dramatically reduced thrust during take-off, and the fuselage is stretched by 20% to store liquid hydrogen (LH 2 ). Modularization of power systems promotes safety in one engine inoperative scenarios and allows reaching specific power metrics for stack, balance-of-plant and fuel cell system (FCS), necessary for acceptable take-off weight. In conclusion, cost parity requires increase in FCS lifetime, LH 2 cost reduction, and improved FCS specific power.

Evolution of the two-neutron configuration from 11 Li to 13 Li

In this work we investigate the two-neutron decay of 13 Li and of the excited states of 11 Li populated via one-proton removal from 14 Be and 12 Be, respectively. A phenomenological model is used to describe the decay of 11 Li and 13 Li. While the first one displays important sequential components, the second one appears dominated by the direct two-neutron decay. A microscopic three-body model is used to extract information on the spatial configuration of the emitted neutrons before the decay and shows that the average distance between the neutrons increases going from 11 Li to 13 Li.

Accelerating the discovery of low-energy structure configurations: A computational approach that integrates first-principles calculations, Monte Carlo sampling, and Machine Learning

Finding Minimum Energy Configurations (MECs) is essential in fields such as physics, chemistry, and materials science, as they represent the most stable states of the systems. In particular, identifying such MECs in multi-component alloys considered candidate PFMs is key because it determines the most stable arrangement of atoms within the alloy, directly influencing its phase stability, structural integrity, and thermo-mechanical properties. However, since the search space grows exponentially with the number of atoms considered, obtaining such MECs using computationally expensive first-principles DFT calculations often results in a cumbersome task. To escape the above compromise between physical fidelity and computational efficiency, we have developed a novel physics-based data-driven approach that combines Monte Carlo sampling, first-principles DFT calculations, and Machine Learning to accelerate the discovery of MECs in multi-component alloys. More specifically, we have leveraged well-established Cluster Expansion (CE) techniques with Local Outlier Factor models to establish strategies that enhance the reliability of the CE method. In this work, we demonstrated the capabilities of the proposed approach for the particular case of a tungsten-based quaternary high-entropy alloy. However, the method is applicable to other types of alloys and enables a wide range of applications.

Oxygen Defect Configurations in Single-Phase UO 2.15

Hyperstoichiometric UO 2.15 was characterized by neutron total scattering at high temperature in the single-phase UO 2+x region of the U/O phase diagram. The diffraction data confirmed a single-phase fluorite structure at high temperature. Analysis of the short-range data showed that the same structural model does not fit the pair distribution functions well. Instead, structural models containing specific configurations of oxygen defect clusters best represent the local atomic arrangement. In conclusion, prevalent defect clusters previously proposed were fit to the experimental data, and moderately distorted oxygen cuboctahedra hypothesized by recent molecular dynamics simulations fit the data most accurately.

Ultra-Confined Environments May Restrict the Possible Configurations of Supported Metal Complexes

Here, the rotation frequencies of amido ligands are highly sensitive to the electronic structure of d 0 transition metal complexes and have been used to study ligand donor properties. While attempting to study the donor properties of silanolate ligands in a silica-supported Cr complex, we observed highly restricted motions due to the added steric hindrance from the support, with only approximately half of the amides rotating on a 50 ms time scale. Surprisingly, when the same species is grafted into narrow 2.2 nm pores, all amido ligands are able to rotate. Density functional theory calculations suggest that confinement may limit the possible coordination sites and the configuration of the formed surface species, potentially enabling the formation of conformationally homogeneous surface site populations.

Many-Body Basis Set Amelioration Method for Incremental Full Configuration Interaction

Incremental full configuration interaction (iFCI) is a polynomial-cost electronic structure method that systematically approaches the FCI limit by employing the method of increments to solve the Schrödinger equation through a many-body expansion. This article introduces the many-body basis set amelioration (MBBSA) method, which is designed to allow iFCI to be applicable to larger atomic orbital basis sets. MBBSA uses a series of inexpensive iFCI calculations to approximate the correlation energy that would be found using a more expensive, highly accurate iFCI calculation. Here, when compared to standard iFCI computations on smaller molecules in triple-zeta and larger basis sets, MBBSA provides approximations to the total and relative energies within chemical accuracy. MBBSA exhibits a reduced cost of between 60-92% when compared to standard iFCI calculations, with larger systems experiencing the largest benefit. Tests of MBBSA on two reactions that involve highly correlated systems, the automerization of cyclobutadiene and a Criegee intermediate reaction, show that MBBSA has practical utility for studying realistic chemistries.

Nonorthogonal Configuration Interaction for Singlet Fission: Beyond the Dimer

Non-orthogonal configuration interaction with fragment calculations are presented for a number of compounds that show singlet fission properties: (i) four perylene-diimide derivatives, (ii) crystalline pentacene and its (B,N)-substituted variant, and (iii) a regular and a distorted stack of three indolonaphthyridine molecules. The electronic couplings between the singlet excitonic states (S 1 ) and the singlet-coupled double triplet (T 1 T 1 ), the so-called singlet fission coupling, were computed from ensembles with two and three molecules, and except for some small deviations when charge transfer states were included, results are virtually the same. Ensembles of three molecules were used to study the mechanisms of triplet separation, double triplet diffusion, and singlet and triplet exciton diffusion. The calculations show that apart from the standard mechanism for the generation of two uncoupled triplet states (S 1 → T 1 T 1 → T 1 ...T 1 ), there are two other possible pathways: the direct generation from the singlet excitonic state (S 1 → T 1 ...T 1 ) and the process in which the excitonic state evolves in a superposition of T 1 T 1 and T 1 ...T 1 states. Furthermore, the electronic coupling for triplet diffusion is in general much smaller than for singlet diffusion.

Investigating Mechanisms Driving Differences in the Characteristics of Precipitation in the E3SM Multiscale Modeling Framework With 2D Versus 3D Cloud Resolving Model Configurations

Abstract In this study, we compare the Energy Exascale Earth Systems Model (E3SM) multiscale modeling framework (MMF) with the cloud resolving model (CRM) configured in two (2dMMF) and three (3dMMF) dimensions. We explore how CRM dimensionality impacts the representation of mean and extreme precipitation characteristics. Our results show that tropical mean precipitation patterns are better represented in 3dMMF compared to observations (Integrated Multi‐satellitE Retrivals for GPM and Global Precipitation Climatology Project One Degree Daily products), while 2dMMF better captures extreme precipitation intensity, with systematic land‐ocean differences in precipitation and cloud‐associated variables. These differences are attributed to the co‐occurrence of CRM throttling (i.e., suppressed convection in due to smaller numbers of CRM columns and domain size) and dilution (i.e., 3‐D cloud circulations with increased entrainment and lower precipitation efficiency) effects. Overall, throttling results in more low‐level humidity in 2dMMF and dilution contributes to more high clouds with less precipitation efficiency in 3dMMF. Since throttling occurs more strongly over the ocean than land, the 3dMMF tends to have less cloud liquid and precipitation over the ocean and more cloud ice and precipitation over land. These results may serve as a guide for choosing the CRM structure to reduce precipitation and cloud‐related biases.

Numerically exact configuration interaction at quadrillion-determinant scale

The combinatorial growth of configuration interaction (CI) has long limited this formally exact quantum chemistry method to only the smallest molecules. Here, we report a numerically exact CI calculation exceeding one quadrillion (10 15 ) determinants, made possible by a lossless categorical compression strategy within the small-tensor-product distributed active space (STP-DAS) framework. This approach overcomes the traditional memory bottlenecks of CI by a numerically exact compression of the wavefunction representation and reformulating the most computationally demanding matrix–vector operations. Using this method, we performed a fully relativistic CI calculation of the ground state of HBrTe with over 10 15 complex-valued determinants in just 34.5 h on 1000 computing nodes—the largest CI calculation ever reported. We further achieved fast computation for systems with hundreds of billions of determinants on only a few compute nodes. Extensive benchmarks confirm that the method retains full numerical exactness while cutting memory and computational cost by orders of magnitude. Compared to previous state-of-the-art CI calculations, this work achieves a 1000 times increase in CI space, a 10 6 -fold increase in floating-point operations performed, and a 10 6 -fold improvement in computational speed.

Primary material supply configurations and domestic recycling for cost-effective battery material production in the US

Battery cathode active material costs hinge on regionally concentrated, price-volatile metal supply. Here. we construct a regional facility-level cost model based on over 80 global lithium, cobalt, and nickel mines, refineries, and battery-grade material plants. Our model yields aggregated lithium, nickel, manganese, and cobalt production material costs from 392 region-based supply configurations for five different cathode active materials. Focusing on the United States, all-domestic supply is 9–34% costlier than global average, increasing by cobalt content, while these shortfalls can be overcome by selective low-cost material imports. Furthermore, we analyze costs of two U.S.-based recycling facilities from primary data and techno-economic modelling and compare resulting cathode active material-level costs to primary supply. Although it is still significantly higher on cathode active material cost-level, rising end-of-life flows and lowered black-mass prices will, however, make secondary supply cost-competitive to domestic and foreign primary supply cost floors. Facility-level benchmarks reveal targeted import, scaling, and production cost optimization as levers for a resilient, cost-effective U.S. battery-material supply chain.
