An overview of the Hubble Space Telescope Pointing Control System design and operation

An overview of the Pointing Control System (PCS) design and operational scenarios, a description of the on-orbit performance, the problems encountered, and the resulting modifications that enhance the Hubble Space Telescope mission, are presented. The PCS provides the capability to maneuver the 24,000 lb telescope 90 deg in less than 18 minutes. It also provides the primary functions of attitude reference, attitude control and stabilization.

Micro-Precision Interferometer: Pointing Control System

This paper describes the development of the wavefront tilt (pointing) control system for the JPL Micro-Precision Interferometer (MPI). This control system employs piezo-electric actuators and a digital imaging sensor with feedback compensation to reject errors in instrument pointing. Stringent performance goals require large feedback, however, several characteristics of the plant tend to restrict the available bandwidth. A robust 7th-order wavefront tilt control system was successfully implemented on the MPI instrument, providing sufficient disturbance rejection performance to satisfy the established interference fringe visibility.

Control point measurements on Mariner 9 pictures

Measurements are given of the control points on the Mariner 9 pictures which were used in the computation of the June 1973 control net of Mars. The method of making the measurements is discussed along with the picture coordinate system and the removal of distortions. Table are presented of the 9804 measurements of 1645 points on 660 pictures.

Microbiological Analysis of Mizuna Grown in the Veggie Hardware to Define Critical Control Points and Ensure the Safety of Space Grown Crops

The Veggie facility on the International Space Station has been utilized as a “pick and eat” plant growth system to provide fresh produce for crew consumption. The VEG-04 experiments completed in 2019 examined the effect of red-rich and blue-rich light treatments on the growth of mizuna as well as harvest method and resulting yield. Analysis was performed on plant tissues and associated hardware to evaluate the influence of these experimental variables on the microbial population. VEG-04A plant pillows with pre-planted Mizuna mustard seeds were launched on SpaceX-16 in December 2018. The pillows were initiated, and a single 35-day harvest was performed. Veg 04B pillows were pre-planted with Mizuna seeds and launched on SpaceX-18 in July 2019, initiated and subsequently harvested at days 29, 43 and 58. The crew consumed approximately half of the produce, and the remainder was frozen and returned for analysis. Leaves, swabs, wicking material, substrate, and roots were processed and plated on media for the enumeration and isolation of bacteria and fungi. Isolated bacterial colonies were identified using Biolog Micro ID system or MicroSEQ16S rDNA sequencing technique. Fungal colonies were identified using the MicroSEQ D2 rDNA kit. Sample extracts were plated onto specialized media to identify Escherichia coli/coliforms, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella sp. Results indicate that bacterial and fungal counts were higher in plants grown in red-rich lightin VEG-04A, while the opposite was true in the Veg-04B third harvest. Microbial counts increased with the repeated harvest method used in Veg-04B. These data support the understanding of environmental and horticultural practices that can affect the microbiological quality of space-grown produce grown and aid in identification of critical control points for the development of a hazard analysis critical control point plan for ISS-grown crops. This research was co-funded by the NASA’s Human Research Program and Space Biology.

Photodetectors on Coronagraph Mask for Pointing Control

It has been proposed to install a symmetrical array of photodetectors about the center of the mask of a coronagraph of the type used to search for planets orbiting remote stars. The purpose of this installation is to utilize the light from a star under observation as a guide in pointing the telescope. Simple arithmetic processing of the outputs of the photodetectors would provide indications of the lateral position of the center of the mask relative to the center of the image of the star. These indications could serve as pointing-control feedback signals for adjusting the telescope aim to center the image of the star on the mask. The widths of central mask areas available for placement of photodetectors differ among coronagraph designs, typically ranging upward from about 100 m. Arrays of photodetectors can readily be placed within areas in this size range. The number of detectors in an array could be as small as 4 or as large as 64. The upper limit on the number of detectors would be determined according to the extent of the occulting pattern and the number of functionalities, in addition to pointing control, to be served by the array.

Investigation Of Prandtl-Ishlinskii Hysteresis Compensation for Deep Space Optical Communications Pointing Control

This paper studies the simulated performance of the Deep Space Optical Communication (DSOC) laser downlink pointing control system that has a pointing requirement at the sub-microradian scale. To achieve the required pointing precision, the DSOC Flight Laser Transceiver (FLT) point-ahead mirror (PAM) employs piezoelectric actuators, which are widely used in precision applications due to their high motion resolution, rapid response, and high output forces. However, a piezoelectric actuator's performance is often limited by nonlinearities in their response, most significantly hysteresis. To study the effect of hysteresis on our simulated pointing performance, an invertible hysteresis model is developed using the Classical Prantdl-Ishlinskii (CPI) method. The simulation includes models of DSOC hardware and electronic system components based on key parameters (bias, frequency response, noise), with the hysteresis modeled in the PAM piezo actuator dynamics. A Proportional-Integral controller provides feedback with measurements from two potential sources: strain gauge sensors or a photon-counting camera. To compensate for hysteresis behavior, a feedforward inverse CPI hysteresis model is implemented in the control system. Two CPI models are built using different sampling methods (uniform sampling and cosine spacing) and controller performance is compared. For the maximum command range of ±400 μrad at 1 mHz, results show that the feedforward combined with feedback control reduces output tracking error by 50% or 58% (to 0.20 or 0.38 μrad) compared to feedback control alone (from 0.40 or 0.90 μrad), corresponding to the uniform-sampled and cosine-sampled CPI models, respectively.

Design of a new high-performance pointing controller for the Hubble Space Telescope

A new form of high-performance, disturbance-adaptive pointing controller for the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is proposed. This new controller is all linear (constant gains) and can maintain accurate 'pointing' of the HST in the face of persistent randomly triggered uncertain, unmeasurable 'flapping' motions of the large attached solar array panels. Similar disturbances associated with antennas and other flexible appendages can also be accommodated. The effectiveness and practicality of the proposed new controller is demonstrated by a detailed design and simulation testing of one such controller for a planar-motion, fully nonlinear model of HST. The simulation results show a high degree of disturbance isolation and pointing stability.

Set-point control of nonlinear systems

A method of nonlinear stochastic control is applied to the problem of providing set-point control. The procedure is illustrated for a nonlinear second-order plant. The controller design uses a variation of the 'multiple-model adaptive control' approach. Specific problems related to the design are investigated, including learning time and set-point accuracy dependence on the number of approximating models, chord versus tangent approximations, and the a priori Markov switching parameter values. Simulations are provided for different situations under various levels of measurement noise.

Experiment pointing control during space shuttle sortie missions

The pointing and stability problems of the space shuttle sortie mission are examined from the standpoint of basic shuttle capability and the techniques that could be used for improving this capability to accommodate a maximum number of experiments. Augmentation of the basic shuttle control system is proposed to provide an acceptable pointing environment. A stabilized reference base is recommended as a general pointing instrument for certain earth observation and astronomy experiments. Simulation results are presented which were obtained by modeling the Skylab Experiment Pointing Control (EPC) system on a thruster controlled shuttle.
