Synthesis and structural properties of a 2D Zn( II ) dodecahydroxy- closo -dodecaborate coordination polymer

Here, in this work, we discuss the synthesis and characterization of a 2D coordination polymer composed of a dianionic perhydroxylated boron cluster, [B 12 (OH) 12 2– ], coordinated to Zn( II )—the first example of a transition metal-coordinated [B 12 (OH) 12 ] 2– compound. This material was synthesized via cation exchange from the starting cesium salt and then subjected to rigorous characterization prior to and after thermal activation. Numerous techniques, including XRD, FTIR, SEM, TGA, and solid-state NMR revealed a 2D coordination polymer composed of sheets of Zn( II ) ions intercalated between planes of boron clusters. The as-synthesized material was then evacuated of solvent via thermal treatment, and atomic-level changes from this transformation were elucidated through a combination of 1D and 2D solid-state NMR analyses of 11 B and 1 H nuclei, suggesting the full removal of coordinated solvent molecules. Evidence also suggested that [B 12 (OH) 12 2– ] can adjust its coordination to Zn( II ) in the solid-state through hemilability of its numerous –OH ligands.

Reference Correlations for the Density and Viscosity of Molten Alkali and Alkaline Earth Fluoride Salts

While there is a significant body of literature pertaining to thermophysical property measurements of molten salts, there is often a wide degree of variability among independent measurements of the same compounds. As such, the scientific community benefits greatly from an unbiased, independent assessment of duplicate datasets, so that reference correlations which describe these thermophysical properties as functions of temperature can be determined and then commonly used by researchers, scientists, and engineers. With regard to molten fluoride compounds, a significant time has elapsed since density and viscosity reference correlations have been determined; Janz conducted the most recent effort, in 1988, to provide reference correlations for the densities and viscosities of molten fluoride compounds via the National Standard Reference Data System coordinated by the National Bureau of Standards. Since then, new data have been published for molten fluoride compounds, and a new precedent has surfaced for putting forth reference correlations that involve fitting to multiple primary datasets. In this work, reference correlations are put forth for molten alkali and alkaline earth fluoride compounds in an effort to provide updated, improved correlations for general use. For molten alkali fluoride densities, estimated uncertainties with a 95% confidence interval are summarized as follows: LiF (0.63%), NaF (0.48%), KF (0.76%), RbF (0.93%), and CsF (0.75%). For molten alkaline earth fluoride densities, an estimated uncertainty was not able to be quantified for BeF 2 because of limited data; however, estimated uncertainties with a 95% confidence interval are summarized as follows for the remaining alkaline earth fluorides: MgF 2 (1.5%), CaF 2 (0.92%), SrF 2 (1.6%), and BaF 2 (0.23%). For molten alkali fluoride viscosities, uncertainty was not able to be quantified for RbF and CsF because of limited data; however, estimated uncertainties with a 95% confidence interval are summarized as follows for the remaining alkali fluorides: LiF (4.4%), NaF (3.0%), and KF (4.0%). For molten alkaline earth fluoride viscosities, limited consistent data resulted in the recommendation of single datasets (from literature) that are deemed to be the most trustworthy based on the quality of the underlying experimental studies.

Making coordination networks ionic: a unique strategy to achieve solution-processable hybrid semiconductors

The development of high-performance, solution-processable semiconducting materials is crucial for the advancement of emerging clean-energy technologies such as light-emitting diodes and photovoltaics. While hybrid perovskites have shown considerable promise for implementation in these technologies, their reliance on toxic metals and relatively low stability towards moisture and chemical environments remain to be addressed. In this Chemistry Frontiers article, we describe a unique strategy to build nontoxic, robust and solution-processable hybrid semiconductors based on copper halide by incorporating ionic bonds in coordination complexes (molecular or extended network structures). Specifically, these compounds are made of anionic copper(I) halide and cationic organic ligands that form both coordinate and ionic bonds at the inorganic/organic interfaces and are referred to as all-in-one (AIO)-type structures. Here, the unique bonding nature renders the AIO-type structures with greatly enhanced solubility, excellent optical tunability and remarkable framework stability, all highly desirable for thin-film based optoelectronic devices. We will highlight the most recent progress in the development of this material group, including their design strategies, important properties and potential for clean-energy related applications. We will also briefly discuss the existing challenges and future outlook of these materials.

Eco-friendly, solution-processable and efficient low-energy lighting phosphors: copper halide based hybrid semiconductors Cu 4 X 6 (L) 2 (X = Br, I) composed of covalent, ionic and coordinate bonds

A series of copper halide based inorganic–organic hybrid semiconductors have been synthesized. Structural analysis confirms that all compounds are composed of one-dimensional Cu 4 X 6 2- anionic chains that coordinate to cationic ligands via Cu–N dative bonds. Different coordination affinities of the ligands lead to two types of ligand arrangements with various structural distortions. All compounds are highly resistant to heat and moisture as a result of the combination of coordinate and ionic bonds. Low energy emission with high efficiency is achieved for these compounds and the emission energy (~552–615 nm) and color (yellow-orange) can be tuned by varying the ligand and halogen element. The electronic structure and luminescence mechanism are examined by both experimental and theoretical methods. More importantly, all compounds demonstrate good solubility in polar aprotic solvents, a desired property that is absent in all other CuX hybrid families of extended structures, which is attributed primarily to the ionic nature of this material class. Furthermore, the good solution-processability, and cost effective and easily scalable synthesis coupled with high quantum efficiencies and framework stability make these hybrid materials promising phosphors for general lighting applications.

Elucidating Instabilities Contributing to Capacity Fade in Bipyridine‐Based Materials for Non‐aqueous Flow Batteries

Abstract Metal‐based non‐aqueous redox flow batteries have the potential for long‐term energy storage if stability requirements can be achieved. One such stability issue in metal coordination complexes arises from ligand shedding in the anolyte upon reduction. Recognizing that the free ligands are relatively more stable than the metal coordination complex under highly reducing conditions, we evaluated a family of metal‐free bipyridinium materials as flow battery anolytes with the corresponding iron coordination complex as the catholyte. Bipyridinium compounds were functionalized for increased electrochemical stability, cycled in flow cells to understand efficiencies, and analyzed for degradation products. Methylation of the bipyridine nitrogens increased electrochemical stability yet left the reduced molecule susceptible to radical‐induced bond cleavage. Subsequent functionalization of bipyridine with carbomethoxy groups resulted in good battery performance with 96 % Coulombic and 90 % voltage efficiency, and improved cycling stability over a methoxy‐substituted anolyte with 14 % vs 36 % capacity fade in the first charge‐discharge cycle.

Solution-processable copper(I) iodide-based inorganic-organic hybrid semiconductors composed of both coordinate and ionic bonds

Three new one-dimensional (1D) All-In-One (AIO) type CuI-based hybrid semiconductors with both dative and ionic bonds between the inorganic and organic components have been successfully designed and synthesized by using the ligands containing both cationic center and coordination available sites. Structural analysis confirms that all compounds share the same formula of Cu 4 I 6 (L) 2 (L = ligand) and are composed of 1D-Cu 4 I 6 2- anionic chains that coordinate to cationic ligands. Additionally, these materials demonstrate high stability towards heat and moisture and excellent solution processability due to their unique bonding nature. They emit low energy light ranging from green to orange color (530-590 nm). The origin and mechanism of their emissions were studied by both experimental and theoretical methods. More importantly, all compounds can be easily fabricated into films by solution process, a desired but rare feature for most of CuI-based hybrids built of extended networks.

Sulfur-Donor Solvents Strongly Coordinate Pb 2+ in Hybrid Organic–Inorganic Perovskite Precursor Solutions

Strong coordination between Lewis-basic processing additives and the Lewis-acidic lead halide in hybrid organic–inorganic perovskite (HOIP) precursor solutions is required to solubilize the lead halide, and subsequently access the appropriate crystallization kinetics and attain the desired morphology of perovskite active layers. While oxygen-donor solvents and additives, such as dimethylformamide and dimethyl sulfoxide, are widely used for perovskite processing, we demonstrate here that “soft” sulfur-donor solvents exhibit stronger coordination to the “borderline soft” Lewis acid Pb 2+ center of PbI 2 relative to “hard” O-donor solvents in the precursor solution. The stronger coordination of S-donor solvents compared to O-donor solvents to Pb 2+ implies that such compounds can be useful additives to HOIP precursor solutions. Density-functional calculations of the enthalpy change resulting from the coordination of solvents to Pb 2+ provide direct numerical comparison of the strength of O-donor and S-donor coordination with Pb 2+ and expands the library of candidate S-donor compounds. Our results provide a roadmap for processing additive selection and expand the previously limited choice of perovskite processing additives to include strongly coordinating S-donor compounds.

The structures of five s -block metal salt forms of three disulfonated monoazo dyes are presented. These are poly[di-μ-aqua-diaqua[μ 4 -3,3'-(diazane-1,2-diyl)bis(benzenesulfonato)]disodium(I)], [Na 2 (C 12 H 8 N 2 O 6 S 2 )(H 2 O) 4 ] n , (I), catena -poly[[tetraaquacalcium(II)]-μ-3,3'-(diazane-1,2-diyl)bis(benzenesulfonato)], [Ca(C 12 H 8 N 2 O 6 S 2 )(H 2 O) 4 ] n , (II), catena -poly[[[diaquacalcium(II)]-μ-2-(4-amino-3-sulfonatophenyl)-1-(4-sulfonatophenyl)diazenium] dihydrate], {[Na(C 12 H 10 N 3 O 6 S 2 )(H 2 O) 2 ]·2H 2 O} n , (III), hexaaquamagnesium bis[2-(4-amino-3-sulfonatophenyl)-1-(4-sulfonatophenyl)diazenium] octahydrate, [Mg(H 2 O) 6 ](C 12 H 10 N 3 O 6 S 2 ) 2 ·8H 2 O, (IV), and poly[[{μ 2 -4-[2-(4-amino-2-methyl-5-methoxyphenyl)diazen-1-yl]benzene-1,3-disulfonato}di-μ-aqua-diaquabarium(II)] dihydrate], {[Ba(C 14 H 13 N 3 O 7 S 2 )(H 2 O) 4 ]·2H 2 O} n , (V). Compound (III) is that obtained on crystallizing the commercial dyestuff Acid Yellow 9 [74543-21-8]. The Mg species is a solvent-separated ion-pair structure and the others are all coordination polymers with bonds from the metal atoms to sulfonate groups. Compound (I) is a three-dimensional coordination polymer, (V) is a two-dimensional coordination polymer and both (II) and (III) are one-dimensional coordination polymers. The coordination behaviour of the azo ligands and the water ligands, the dimensionality of the coordination polymers and the overall packing motifs of these five structures are contrasted to those of monosulfonate monoazo congers. It is found that (I) and (II) adopt similar structural types to those of monosulfonate species but that the other three structures do not.

Elucidating Actinide–Pertechnetate and Actinide–Perrhenate Bonding via a Family of Th–TcO 4 and Th–ReO 4 Frameworks and Solutions

Technetium-99, a β-emitter produced from 235 U fission, poses a challenge for the nuclear industry due to co-extraction of pertechnetate (TcO 4 – ) with the actinides (An) during nuclear fuel reprocessing. Previous studies suggested that direct coordination of pertechnetate with An plays an important role in the coextraction process. However, few studies have provided direct evidence for An–TcO 4 – bonding in the solid state, and even fewer in solution. The present study describes synthesis and structural elucidation of a family of thorium(IV)-pertechnetate/perrhenate (ReO 4 – , nonradioactive surrogate) compounds, which is obtained by dissolution of thorium oxyhydroxide in perrhenic/pertechnic acid followed by crystallization, with or without heating. For reaction ratios of 3:1, 4:1, and 6:1 MO 4 – /Th(IV) (M = Tc, Re), the crystallized compounds reflect the same ratio, suggesting facile and flexible coordination. Furthermore, nine structures reveal 1-dimensional and 2-dimensional frameworks with varying topologies. While a multitude of compounds isolated from 4:1 (and 6:1) reaction solutions feature Th monomers linked by MO 4 – , the 3:1 reaction solution yielded the well-known dihydroxide-bridged thorium dimer, linked, and capped by MO 4 – . Density functional theory calculations on ReO 4 – /TcO 4 – isomorphs suggest similar bonding characteristics in the solid state, but experimental solution characterization noted differences. Specifically, small-angle X-ray scattering studies suggest the bonding of Th–TcO 4 – persists in solution, while Th–ReO 4 – bonding is less apparent.

Inverse Design of Ultralow Lattice Thermal Conductivity Materials via Materials Database Screening of Lone Pair Cation Coordination Environment

The presence of lone pair (LP) electrons is strongly associated with the disruption of lattice heat transport, which is a critical component of strategies to achieve efficient thermoelectric energy conversion. By exploiting an empirical relationship between lattice thermal conductivity, κ L , and the bond angles of pnictogen group LP cation coordination environments, we develop an inverse design strategy based on a materials database screening to identify chalcogenide materials with ultralow κ L for thermoelectrics. Screening the ~635 000 real and hypothetical inorganic crystals of the Open Quantum Materials Database based on the constituent elements, nominal electron counting, LP cation coordination environment, and synthesizability, we identify 189 compounds expected to exhibit ultralow κ L . As a validation, we explicitly compute the lattice dynamical properties of two of the compounds (Cu 2 AgBiPbS 4 and MnTl 2 As 2 S 5 ) using first-principles calculations and successfully find both achieve ultralow κ L values at room temperature of ~0.3-0.4 W/(m·K) corresponding to the amorphous limit. Furthermore, our data-driven approach provides promising candidates for thermoelectric materials and opens new avenues for the design of phononic properties of materials.

First-Row Transition Metals Complexes with Fused Oxazolidine (FOX) Ligands

In this comprehensive study, we report the syntheses and crystal structures of 6 fused oxazolidine (FOX) bicycles and 22 complexes with FOX ligands. The structures are compared to the few FOX complexes found in literature. For our investigations, we developed synthetic strategies to selectively synthesize chiral or achiral FOX bicycles with pyridyl substituents. The coordination chemistry of the chiral and achiral FOX compounds with first-row transition metals is discussed in an indepth analysis of the crystal structures. We found that the binding modes of the ligands are dependent on the configuration of the FOX backbone and on the steric demand of the substituents which were introduced to the pyridyl groups. Here, the configuration of the FOX ligands is retained during the coordination of metal(II) ions such as Mn 2+ , Fe 2+ , Co 2+ , Ni 2+ , Cu 2+ . Reactions of these metal ions with chiral FOX ligands lead to the formation of chiral complexes. In contrast, stronger Lewis acidic metal(III) ions, such as Fe 3+ or Al 3+ , induce an isomerization of the chiral FOX ligands to their achiral diastereomers.

Variable hydrazine coordination modes from reactions with dichlorotris(triphenylphosphine)ruthenium(II)

The reactivity of the prominent ruthenium(II) catalyst and precursor, RuCl 2 (PPh 3 ) 3 , was explored with hydrazine and its derivatives. The reactions produced 6-coordinate ruthenium(II) products that bond with the hydrazine moiety in bridging (NH 2 NH 2 or NH 2 NHMe), end-on (NH 2 NHMe, NH 2 NHPh, or NH 2 NMe 2 ), or side-on (NH 2 NMe 2 ) fashions. The products have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction and 31 P NMR spectroscopy. With NH 2 NH 2 , the dimeric product, [RuCl 2 (PPh 3 ) 2 ] 2 ($μ$-N 2 H 4 ) 2 , was formed under all conditions used. For other hydrazines, the reaction stoichiometry governed product formation to yield either bimetallic or monomeric products. When the RuCl 2 (PPh 3 ) 3 to hydrazine derivative ratio was 1:1 or lower, bimetallic complexes were formed while a 1:2 ratio produced monomeric compounds. The exception to the latter occurs with the production of the monomeric compound, RuCl 2 (PPh 3 ) 2 ($η$ 2 -NH 2 NMe 2 ), that forms employing a 1:1 ratio. In addition to stoichiometry, steric factors and hydrogen bonding played a significant role in dictating the bonding mode of hydrazines. The bimetallic complexes were further reacted to yield the corresponding monomeric products, adopting the form RuCl 2 (PPh 3 ) 2 (L) 2 (L = NH 2 NHMe, NH 2 NHPh, or NH 2 NMe 2 ). Reactions utilizing less than a 1:2 ratio of RuCl 2 (PPh 3 ) 3 to NH 2 NMe 2 produced a mixture of products that appear to be in equilibrium. In conclusion, FT calculations were performed to gain insight into the reaction energetics and molecular stability.

Crystallographic Evidence for Formation of M 6 O 8 /M 6 O 9 f-Element Clusters in Hydrolysis Reactions

In this contribution, we have conducted an examination of crystallographic data which includes 184 4f- and 5f-structures containing the M 6 O 8 or M 6 O 9 moiety. Since much of the work in this field has actually been done to explore the formation and properties of metal organic frameworks (MOFs), we hope that this collection can be used by actinide scientists to further investigate structural and mechanistic trends and gain insight into the formation of these compounds. Here we discuss the general trends in coordination, ligands used, and bonding within the M 6 O 8 or M 6 O 9 core in the hope that further computational work can benefit.

Machine learning of 27Al NMR electric field gradient tensors for crystalline structures from DFT

NMR crystallography has emerged as a promising technique for the determination and refinement of atomic coordinates in crystal structures. The crystal structure of compounds containing quadrupolar nuclei, such as 27Al, can be improved by directly comparing solid-state NMR measurements to DFT computations of the electric field gradient (EFG) tensor. The non-negligible computational cost of these first-principles calculations limits the applicability of this method to all but the most well-defined structures. We developed a fast, low-cost machine learning model to predict EFG parameters based on local structural motifs and elemental parameters. We computed 8081 EFG tensors from 1681 27Al crystalline solids using DFT and benchmarked them against 105 experimentally measured 27Al sites. Surprisingly, simple local geometric features dominate the predictive performance of the resulting random-forest model, yielding an R2 value of 0.98 and an RMSE of 0.61 MHz for CQ, the quadrupolar coupling constant. This model accuracy should enable pre-refining future structural assignments before finally validating with first-principles calculations. Such a catalogue of 27Al NMR tensors can serve as a tool for researchers assigning complex NMR spectra influenced by the nuclear electric quadrupole interaction.

Heterometallic UO 2 2+ /Ag + Complexes: Structural Design and Luminescence Properties

Reported here are the synthesis, structural characterization, and luminescence properties of 11 novel UO 2 2+ /Ag + heterometallic complexes. Halogenated benzoic acids (2,6-dihalobenzoic acid (halo = F, Br), 3,5-dichlorobenzoic acid, and 3-halobenzoic acid (halo = Br, I)) and N-donor polycyclic ligands (2,2′-bipyridine, 2,2’;6′,2″-terpyridine, 1,10-phenanthroline, 2,2′-bipyrimidine) were employed to synthesize a set of compounds and induce structural diversity. The primary mode of coordination with the uranyl cation is hexagonal bipyramidal monomeric units with three halobenzoate ligands in the equatorial plane, though 1-D chains with pentagonal bipyramidal uranyl centers also form. The Ag + cations coordinate preferentially to the N-donor ligands and serve as counter-cations for the anionic uranyl motifs. The soft ligand character of the N-donor molecules is found to be a requirement for the inclusion of the Ag + cation into the structures. Anionic uranyl units and cationic silver units assemble via noncovalent interactions between π systems on adjacent rings and between halogens (when Br and I are present). Solid-state emission spectra display the usual uranyl band with superimposed vibronic fine structure, except for that of compound 1 , which shows emission from the 2,2′-bipyridine center. This family of compounds represents a substantial contribution to the already rich library of UO 2 2+ /Ag + compounds, and the synthetic parameters discussed within reveal a platform for the design of new heterometallic uranyl-containing materials.

Nearly Identical but Not Isotypic: Influence of Lanthanide Contraction on Cs 2 NaLn(PS 4 ) 2 (Ln = La–Nd, Sm, and Gd–Ho)

The effect of the lanthanide contraction often results in topological and symmetry changes in compounds with the same compositions as a function of lanthanide cation size. Here we report on the first example of a lanthanide thiophosphate exhibiting a change in the lanthanide cation environment without any topological or symmetry change. A series of new lanthanide thiophosphates with mixed alkali cations was obtained via a flux crystal growth technique using a CsI flux. The obtained compounds Cs 2 NaLn(PS 4 ) 2 (Ln = La–Nd, Sm, Gd–Ho) were grown as large single crystals (~0.1–1 mm 3 ) and characterized using single crystal X-ray diffraction and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Moving across the series, the structural studies revealed a change in the lanthanide coordination environment dependent upon the identity of the lanthanide. Although all compounds in the Cs 2 NaLn(PS 4 ) 2 series crystallize in the same space group and have the same Wyckoff positions of the atoms, a slight size change between Sm 3+ and Gd 3+ causes a subtle change in coordination number from 9 (for Ln = La–Sm) to 8 (for Ln = Gd–Ho), resulting in two distinct but virtually identical structure types. Ab initio calculations were performed, and the observed experimental trend was corroborated computationally. Finally, magnetic measurements performed on the Cs 2 NaLn(PS 4 ) 2 (Ln = Ce, Pr, Nd, Gd, and Tb) compounds revealed paramagnetic behavior.

Substituent size versus metal binding of inhibitors with variants of influenza endonuclease

The influenza virus causes a significant burden of illness each year. Although vaccination is the most effective method to prevent seasonal influenza infection, viral escape mechanisms make vaccine composition difficult to predict. Antivirals are crucial for decreasing rates of morbidity and mortality from influenza viral infection. The newest anti-influenza drugs target the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase acidic N-terminal (PA N ) endonuclease, a critical component of influenza viral replication machinery. This study examines the structure of inhibitors of PAN that utilize a hydroxypyridinone-based metal-binding pharmacophore (MBP). Specifically, this report explores how the size of substituent groups impacts the binding conformation and affinity of a series of compounds against both wild-type (WT) and resistance mutant strains, I38T and E23K. Co-crystal structures revealed that the distance between compounds and enzyme residue 38 was conserved to maintain strong interactions, resulting in deviations from ideal coordination geometries at the active site metal centers. This suggests the interactions with residue 38 with each compound is important and can impact inhibitor potency as a consequence of distortions in the metal binding geometry of the compounds.
