Direct cross-section measurement of the weak r -process Sr 88 ( α , n ) Zr 91 reaction in ν -driven winds of core-collapse supernovae

About half of the heavy elements beyond iron are known to be produced by the rapid neutron capture process, known as the r process. However, the astrophysical site producing the r process is still uncertain. Chemical abundances observed in several cosmic sites indicate that different mechanisms should be at play. For instance, the abundances around silver measured in a subset of metal-poor stars indicate the presence of a weak r process. This process may be active in neutrino-driven winds of core collapse supernovae where (α,n) reactions dominate the synthesis of Ζ ≈ 40 elements in the expelled materials. Scarcely measured, the rates of (α,n) reactions are determined from statistical Hauser-Feshbach calculations with α-optical-model potentials, which are still poorly constrained. Further, the uncertainties of the (α,n) reaction rates therefore make a significant contribution to the uncertainties of the abundances determined from stellar modeling. In this work, the 88 Sr (α,n)⁢ 91 Zr reaction which impacts the weak r-process abundances has been probed at astrophysics energy for the first time; directly measuring the total cross sections at astrophysical energies of 8.37–13.09 MeV in the center of mass (3.8–7.5 GK). Two measurements were performed at ATLAS with the electrically segmented ionization chamber MUSIC, in inverse kinematics, while following the active target technique. The cross sections of this α-induced reaction on 88 Sr, located at the shell closure N = 50, have been found to be lower than expected, by a factor of 3, despite recent statistical calculations validated by measurements on neighboring nuclei. This result encourages more experimental investigations of (α,n) reactions, at Ν = 50 and towards the neutron-rich side, to further test the predictive power and reliability of such calculations.

A planar near-field scanning technique for bistatic radar cross section measurements

A progress report on the development of a bistatic radar cross section (RCS) measurement range is presented. A technique using one parabolic reflector and a planar scanning probe antenna is analyzed. The field pattern in the test zone is computed using a spatial array of signal sources. It achieved an illumination pattern with 1 dB amplitude and 15 degree phase ripple over the target zone. The required scan plane size is found to be proportional to the size of the desired test target. Scan plane probe sample spacing can be increased beyond the Nyquist lambda/2 limit permitting constant probe sample spacing over a range of frequencies.

Combination of inclusive top-quark pair production cross-section measurements using ATLAS and CMS data at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 7 and 8 TeV

A combination of measurements of the inclusive top-quark pair production cross-section performed by ATLAS and CMS in proton–proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV at the LHC is presented. The cross-sections are obtained using top-quark pair decays with an opposite-charge electron–muon pair in the final state and with data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 5 fb$^{−1}$ at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 7 TeV and about 20 fb$^{−1}$ at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 8 TeV for each experiment. The combined cross-sections are determined to be 178.5 ± 4.7 pb at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 7 TeV and $ {243.3}_{-5.9}^{+6.0} $ pb at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 8 TeV with a correlation of 0.41, using a reference top-quark mass value of 172.5 GeV. The ratio of the combined cross-sections is determined to be R$_{8/7}$ = 1.363 ± 0.032. The combined measured cross-sections and their ratio agree well with theory calculations using several parton distribution function (PDF) sets. The values of the top-quark pole mass (with the strong coupling fixed at 0.118) and the strong coupling (with the top-quark pole mass fixed at 172.5 GeV) are extracted from the combined results by fitting a next-to-next-to-leading-order plus next-to-next-to-leading-log QCD prediction to the measurements. Using a version of the NNPDF3.1 PDF set containing no top-quark measurements, the results obtained are $ {m}_t^{\textrm{pole}}={173.4}_{-2.0}^{+1.8} $ GeV and $ {\alpha}_{\textrm{s}}\left({m}_Z\right)={0.1170}_{-0.0018}^{+0.0021} $.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Aqueous harvesting of 88 Zr at a radioactive-ion-beam facility for cross-section measurements

Isotope harvesting is a method of collecting the long-lived radioisotopes that build up during the operation of ion-beam facilities in a way that is useful for subsequent research. As a demonstration of this method for the collection of a group IV metal at a fragmentation facility, the high-energy Zr 88 secondary beam produced from a 140-MeV/u Mo 92 primary beam at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) was stopped in a water target. The setup aimed to mimic the aqueous beam dump that will be implemented at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). The collected Zr 88 and accompanying Y 88 decay daughter were radiochemically extracted from the solution and made into target samples suitable for neutron-capture cross-section measurements. These samples were then irradiated at two reactor facilities, and the Zr 88 average thermal-neutron-capture cross section ( σ T ) and resonance integral ( I ) were determined to be σ T = ( 8.04 ± 0.63 ) × 10 5 b and I = ( 2.53 ± 0.28 ) × 10 6 b. The σ T value agrees well with previous results and I , determined for the first time here, was found to be the largest measured resonance integral by two orders of magnitude. The Y 88 thermal-neutron-capture cross section was determined to be less than 1.8 × 10 4 b. This work demonstrates the steps needed to make cross-section measurements with samples produced via aqueous isotope harvesting.

Search for the 𝑌⁡(2175) in the Photoproduction Cross Section Measurement of 𝛾⁢𝑝 → 𝜙⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝑝 at GlueX

Based on 334 pb −1 of photoproduction data collected with the GlueX detector at Jefferson Lab, we have measured for the first time the cross section of the exclusive reaction 𝛾+𝑝→𝜙⁡(1020)⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝑝 by reconstructing the final state 𝐾 +⁢ 𝐾 − ⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝑝 produced with a photon beam of energies between 8.0 and 11.6 GeV. Based on the measured differential cross section, we have performed a search for the strangeoniumlike exotic candidate 𝑌⁡(2175), recently renamed to 𝜙⁡(2170). This state has been reported by different 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − annihilation experiments and it is addressed here for the first time in a photoproduction experiment. We do not find evidence for this state when using the resonance parameters quoted by the Particle Data Group and provide upper limits on the photoproduction cross section. Instead, we find a structure at a mass of 𝑚⁡(𝜙⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ) = 2.24 GeV/𝑐 2 with a statistical significance of about 5⁢𝜎. The parameters of this structure differ from those quoted by the Particle Data Group for the 𝜙⁡(2170) and are consistent with a previous observation in 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − annihilation. In addition, there is evidence for a second structure at 1.82 GeV/𝑐 2 .

C 12 ( n , n 1 ′ γ ) partial γ -ray cross section measured using the GENESIS array

Improved neutron inelastic scattering cross sections have repeatedly been identified as a top priority nuclear data need, important for basic science and a range of applications in nuclear energy, stockpile stewardship, and proliferation detection. For the C 12 ( n , n ′ γ ) reaction in particular, recent measurements have unveiled some structural discrepancies, demonstrating incongruities among themselves and in relation to the ENDF/B-VIII.0 nuclear data evaluation. To help resolve these disagreements, a measurement was performed at the 88-Inch Cyclotron at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory using a broad-spectrum neutron beam and a 99.8% pure natural carbon target. The Gamma Energy Neutron Energy Spectrometer for Inelastic Scattering (GENESIS) was employed to measure energy-differential γ -ray emission spectra as a function of incident neutron energy in the energy range of 5.5 to 16.7 MeV. The C 12 partial γ -ray cross sections were extracted at 63 ∘ , 122 . 5 ∘ , and 150 ∘ with respect to the incoming neutron beam and integrated using angular distribution data available in the literature. The data show agreement with a recent literature measurement and evaluation from 11 to 15 MeV, but indicate a larger cross section for incident neutron energies between 5.5 and 8.5 MeV. The measured relative angular distributions are also reported and were found to agree with evaluation. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Cross-section measurements for the production of a Z boson in association with high-transverse-momentum jets in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Cross-section measurements for a $Z$ boson produced in association with high-transverse-momentum jets ($p_T$ ≥ 100 GeV) and decaying into a charged-lepton pair ($e^+$$e^–$, $µ^+$$µ^–$) are presented. The measurements are performed using proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb –1 collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Measurements of angular correlations between the $Z$ boson and the closest jet are performed in events with at least one jet with $p_T$ ≥ 500 GeV. Event topologies of particular interest are the collinear emission of a $Z$ boson in dijet events and a boosted $Z$ boson recoiling against a jet. Fiducial cross sections are compared with state-of-the-art theoretical predictions. The data are found to agree with next-to-nextto-leading-order predictions by NNLOjet and with the next-to-leading-order multi-leg generators MadGraph5_aMC@NLO and Sherpa.

2H(p, gamma) 3He cross section measurement using high-energy-density plasmas

An absolute cross section for the radiative capture reaction 2H(p, γ ) 3He has been measured at the OMEGA laser facility using inertially confined plasmas. These high-temperature plasmas are created by imploding a fuel containing capsule using laser ablation, and are advantageous in that they better mimic astrophysical systems. We measure an S factor for this reaction of 0.429 ± 0.026stat ± 0.072sys eV b at Ec.m. = 16.35 ± 0.40 keV, which is higher than the adopted evaluations. This reaction is important as a source of nuclear energy in protostars and brown dwarfs. It is also a critical reaction during big-bang nucleosynthesis, and an accurate cross section can be used as a constraint on cosmology.

Nuclear Dependence of Charged Current Inclusive $\bar{\nu}_\mu -$A Cross Section Measurements at 6 GeV at MINERvA

The main advantage of the MINERvA detector is that it uses differently sized nuclear targets, in the same neutrino beam, allowing for a direct study of nuclear medium effects, with reduced flux and detector uncertainties. This thesis presents the first high statistics charged current antineutrino-nucleus inclusive two-dimensional cross section measurements using an antineutrino beam with $\langle E_{\bar\nu}\rangle\sim$ 6 GeV, on iron, lead, carbon and hydrocarbon targets, as a function of bjorken $x$ and four-momentum transfer squared $Q^2$, invariant mass $W$ and $Q^2$ and muon longitudinal and transverse momenta, $p_t$ and $p_z$. These nuclei of different sizes were utilized to measure the nuclear dependence of the cross section. The antineutrino interactions that were utilized for the analysis presented in this thesis, were having an antimuon in the final state with energy 2-20GeV and with an antimuon scattering angle less than $17^o$. This analysis represents one of the largest antineutrino datasets analyzed to date in the energy region of $\langle E_{\bar\nu} \rangle \sim$ 6 GeV. This direct evidence for the nuclear medium effects, can help benchmarking models, which can be used by future neutrino experiments like DUNE, by extrapolating these results to Argon target.

Hadron-argon Cross Section Measurements in ProtoDUNE

Modern accelerator-based neutrino experiments use complex nuclei, such as argon, as neutrinotargets that rely on nuclear models to unfold the reconstructed neutrino energy to the true neu-trino energy. The nuclear effects complicate the neutrino oscillation measurements and are notwell-understood, and there are very limited measurements of hadron cross sections on argon.ProtoDUNE-SP, a prototype liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) for the Deep Un-derground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) far detector, collected data from a hadronic test beamat CERN in 2018, including protons, pions, and kaons in the range 1 to 7 GeV/c. In this talk, wewill present the status and results of the many hadron-argon cross section analyses.

Status Report of Joint RPI/ORNL NCSP Task for Thermal Neutron Total Cross Section Measurements

A new cold neutron moderator system was developed and constructed at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Gaerttner Linear Accelerator. This system was then used to measure the neutron total cross section in the thermal energy range for polyethylene, polystyrene, Lucite, and yttrium hydride. In tandem with these measurements, a fitting procedure was developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to vary computationally simulated phonon density of states until a fit with differential and integral data was achieved. This model, combined with the new RPI total cross section data, was used to generate thermal scattering law files for the materials measured at RPI.

169 Tm(n,2n) 168 Tm and 169 Tm(n,3n) 167 Tm cross-section measurements from 15 to 21 MeV

The 169 Tm(n,2n) 168 Tm and 169 Tm(n,3n) 167 Tm cross sections have been measured in the neutron energy range between 15 and 21 MeV using the 3 H(d,n) 4 He neutron source reaction. The 169 Tm(n,3n) 167 Tm data are intended to provide an accurate database for interpreting so-called reaction-in-flight neutron yields, which provide a sensitive tool for studying properties of the deuterium-tritium plasma created in inertial confinement fusion laser shots at the National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The data are compared to previous data and evaluations for the reaction studied and are found to be in good agreement with the ENDF/B-VIII.0 evaluation, although small adjustments are necessary for the 169 Tm(n,3n) 167 Tm reaction. Here, for the first time in any (n,2n) cross-section measurements to date, a comprehensive data set ranging from threshold to 21 MeV has been obtained by the same group.

A pion-argon cross section measurement in the ProtoDUNE-SP experiment with cosmogenic muon

Neutrinos are tiny mysterious fundamental particles with small cross sections. Through neutrino physics, scientists across the world are trying to answer many intriguing questions about nature such as the dominance of matter over antimatter, CP violation in the lepton sector, number of supernovas in the early universe, etc. Detection of neutrinos requires massive particle detectors and intense neutrino beam owing to their small cross section. Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is a next-generation neutrino experiment that is planned to start taking data beginning in 2026. DUNE will consist of 4 massive detectors, the first of which will be using single-phase liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) technology. The ProtoDUNE-SP experiment is a prototype of the DUNE built at the CERN neutrino platform and uses the same detector technology that will be used in DUNE first module. The ProtoDUNE-SP experiment collected months of test beam and cosmic ray data beginning in September 2018. It was built to provide a testbed for the installation of detector parts for DUNE, showing long-term stability of the detector, understanding detector response for different test beam particles (including protons, pions, electrons, kaons, muons), and measurement of hadron-argon cross sections. When a particle passes through LArTPC electron-ion pairs are produced. To reconstruct the position and energy of a particle passing through the medium knowledge of ionization electron drift velocity is essential. The electron drift velocity is distorted by an excess positive charge built up in the detector, known as space charge. This study discusses a novel technique for measuring the ionization electron drift velocity using cosmic-ray muons. The technique uses tracks that travel the entire drift distance of the TPC for drift velocity determination. Secondly, the study discusses a method for converting the charge deposited into energy. The method is carried out in two step s. In th e first step detector response for energetic cosmic ray muons crossing the entire the TPC is used to make the charge deposition uniform throughout the TPC, and in the second step stopping cosmic-ray muons are used for determining the energy scale. Finally, the study discusses a pion-argon cross section measurement based on reweighting of Monte Carlo simulations using J. Calcutt's Geant4Reweight framework. Neutrinos cannot be directly detected; they are identified based on the interaction products. Pions are a common interaction product in a neutrino interaction. For precise modeling of neutrino event generators, it is essential to understand the pion-argon interaction. Pion-argon cross section measurement serves as an important input for neutrino interaction models. The results of the pion-argon total reaction cross section using the Geant4 reweighting technique are found to be in good agreement with Geant4 predictions. The many studies carried out in the ProtoDUNE-SP experi ment wil l be useful for current and future neutrino experiments using LArTPC technology including ICARUS, MicroBooNE, DUNE
