Electrode chemistry impact on retention performance of ferroelectric hafnium zirconium oxide (Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2−x ) capacitors

Polarization retention of 10 nm thick ferroelectric hafnium zirconium oxide (Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2−x , HZO) capacitors with W and TaN electrodes is investigated over temperatures ranging from 85 to 150 °C. Same state and opposite state polarization margins for devices with W electrodes show minimal retention loss after 10 5 at 150 °C. The devices capped with TaN electrodes show excellent same state retention, but the opposite state polarization margin in the TaN-electrode devices displays 40% retention loss at 150 °C after 10 5 s. The TaN-capped devices exhibit a more pronounced imprint, which is attributed to an increased oxygen vacancy content (compared to W-capped devices). The increased oxygen vacancy content in the TaN-capped devices is supported by photoluminescence and leakage current measurements. In addition, TaN-capped devices have chemically diffuse electrode–HZO interfaces; more abrupt interfaces are present in the W-capped devices. The presence of interfacial phases in the TaN-capped devices may lead to larger depolarization fields due to reduced charge screening. The results from this study provide further evidence that for HZO ferroelectric devices the electrode can significantly impact polarization retention behavior due to differences in oxygen vacancy concentration and formation of non-ferroelectric interfacial layers.

Bias-pulsed atomic layer etching of 4H-silicon carbide producing subangstrom surface roughness

A new approach to atomic layer etching (ALE) has been demonstrated, and its application to 4H-SiC is reported here. By pulsing only the DC bias for an Ar/Cl2 inductively coupled plasma-reactive ion etching system, the etch cycle duration is reduced by more than an order of magnitude relative to conventional ALE processes. Gas flows are not changed throughout the ALE process. With this process protocol, we achieved an etch rate of 2.48±0.09 Å/cycle with 6 s cycles, an RMS surface roughness (Rq) of 0.83±0.08 Å, and an ALE synergy value of S = 99%. The parameters explored within this ALE process demonstrate effective subangstrom smoothening of 4H-SiC surfaces and is well-suited for a variety of classical and quantum device nanofabrication.

Crystallographic registry in epitaxial V3O5 thin films

Crystallographic orientation plays a central role in determining transport properties in correlated oxides with low-hysteresis metal–insulator transitions. Here, V3O5 thin films were grown on Al2O3 (0001) and their crystallographic registry was evaluated using x-ray diffraction and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy. θ–2θ measurements show a single out-of-plane orientation defined by the (202) reflection. Azimuthal φ-scans of the V3O5 (310) reflection exhibit twelve discrete maxima over 360°, indicating a finite set of in-plane orientations imposed by the substrate symmetry. High-resolution TEM and fast Fourier transform analysis confirm crystallographic coherence at the film–substrate interface. The electrical conductivity exhibits a metal–insulator transition at TMIT ≈ 423 K with no measurable thermal hysteresis and a total change of ~1.6 orders of magnitude between 300 and 480 K. These results establish crystallographic registry in epitaxial V3O5 thin films and provide a structurally well-defined system for future studies of orientation-dependent transport.\r\nT

Structure and Magnetic Properties of Homoleptic Trivalent Tris(alkyl)lanthanides

Six new solvent-free, homoleptic paramagnetic tris(alkyl)lanthanides Ln{C(SiHMe 2 ) 3 } 3 (1Ln) and Ln{C(SiHMe 2 ) 2 Ph} 3 (2Ln) (Ln = Gd, Dy, and Er) were synthesized to investigate the magnetic properties of 4f organometallic compounds stabilized by secondary Ln←H–Si and benzylic interactions. The unit cell of 1Gd contains one independent molecule (Z = 2), while 1Dy and 1Er crystallize with four independent isostructural molecules per unit cell (Z = 16). In all molecules, as in other 1Ln compounds, the three tris(dimethylsilyl)methyl ligands form a trigonal planar LnC 3 core, and six secondary interactions involving Ln←H–Si bonding in Ln{C(SiHMe 2 ) 3 } 3 form above and below the equatorial plane. Two and five crystallographically independent molecules of each 2Ln (2Gd, Z = 8; 2Dy, Z = 20) form with three π-coordinated phenyl groups in addition to either one or two secondary Ln←H–Si interactions per molecule. The packing of these midseries organolanthanide compounds contrasts the single crystallographically unique molecules in previously reported La{C(SiHMe 2 ) 3 } 3 (1La, Z = 2, Z' = 1) and La{C(SiHMe 2 ) 2 Ph} 3 (2La, Z = 2, Z' = 1/3). 2La doped with 2Dy can adopt the crystallographic structure of 2La, which promotes magnetic properties, namely a higher χ m T value at low temperatures as well as stronger magnetic anisotropy. The ac susceptibility data for 10% 2Dy doped into 2La suggests slow relaxation at low temperatures with a relaxation barrier of ~45 K. The computed saturated magnetization of 1Er (M ≈ 4.5 μ B ) and 1Dy (M ≈ 6 μ B ) matches the experimental values, while the computed value for 2Dy better matches the value measured for 2Dy diluted in 2La (M ≈ 5 μ B ). Gas-phase calculations predict that the ground-state and first excited-state multiplet separations are larger for 1Er than 2Er, while the ordering for dysprosium is 1Dy > 2Dy.

Solidification and crystallographic texture modeling of laser powder bed fusion Ti-6Al-4V using finite difference-monte carlo method

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing makes near-net-shaped parts with reduced material cost and time, rising as a promising technology to fabricate Ti-6Al-4V, a widely used titanium alloy in aerospace and medical industries. However, LPBF Ti-6Al-4V parts produced with 67° rotation between layers, a scan strategy commonly used to reduce microstructure and property inhomogeneity, have varying grain morphologies and weak crystallographic textures that change depending on processing parameters. Here, this study predicts LPBF Ti-6Al-4V solidification at three energy levels using a finite difference-Monte Carlo method and validates the simulations with large-area electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) scans. The developed model accurately shows that a <001> texture forms at low energy and a <111> texture occurs at higher energies parallel to the build direction but with a lower strength than the textures observed from EBSD. A validated and well-established method of combining spatial correlation and general spherical harmonics representation of texture is developed to calculate a difference score between simulations and experiments. The quantitative comparison enables effective fine-tuning of nucleation density (N 0 ) input, which shows a nonlinear relationship with increasing energy level. Future improvements in texture prediction code and a more comprehensive study of N 0 with different energy levels will further advance the optimization of LPBF Ti-6Al-4V components. These developments contribute a novel understanding of crystallographic texture formation in LPBF Ti-6Al-4V, the development of robust model validation and calibration pipeline methodologies, and provide a platform for mechanical property prediction and process parameter optimization.

Unraveling Site Selective Magnetic Properties of Cobalt Sites in Critical Elements Lean RE(TM)5 Magnet Materials

We report here our discovery of crystallographic and interstitial sites and onsite electron correlation propelled intrinsic and derived permanent magnetic properties of critical elements lean RE(TM) 5 (RE = La, Ce and TM = Fe, Co) magnet materials. A full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method within the local density approximation (LDA) is used to investigate and analyze the electronic structure and magnetism of these RE(TM) 5 type structures. To better correlate the experimental results, the effective Coulomb (U) and exchange (J) interactions (Hubbard parameters) are crucial at the transition metal sites. Results show that the main propeller of magnetic anisotropy in these compounds is the cobalt atoms at the 2c sites not the 3g sites. This site-specific property and site preference energetics are used to replace 3g sites with non-critical elements such as iron that exhibits a larger magnetic moment. Based on this strategic replacement, we predict two new compounds that have a larger hardness parameter with a relatively large energy product due to the atomic dilution caused by interstitial addition of nitrogen in the compounds: CeCo 2 Fe 3 N 2 and LaCo 2 Fe 3 N 2 .

Growth of Crystallographically Aligned PbSe Films of Controlled Thickness on Amorphous Substrates

Lead selenide (PbSe) has extensively been investigated due to its thermoelectric and photoconductive properties. More recently, predictions of emergent properties have focused synthetic efforts on preparing ultra-smooth layers of crystallographically aligned PbSe layers with a thickness equal to an integer number of monolayers. While rough films are typically formed through Volmer-Weber growth on heated substrates, we report the data presented herein indicates that a crystallographically aligned, ultrathin layer with a defined number of PbSe layers forms on mostly amorphous Mo-Se and V-Se coated Si substrates during nominally room temperature deposition. Since the films are uniform in thickness, the number of PbSe bilayers formed depends on the amount of Pb (or Se) deposited. If the amount of Pb deposited is close to that required for an integral number of unit cells and there is sufficient Se, Laue oscillations are present in the as-deposited samples. The Laue oscillations reflect the quality and uniformity of the crystalline PbSe domains. This study demonstrates that the substrate does not need to be crystalline to form uniform, crystallographically aligned, integer monolayer thick PbSe films. These results suggest that tuning the strength of interactions be-tween substrate and growing film is necessary to form smooth, crystallographically aligned layers. The substrate does not need to be crystalline for these interactions to be strong enough to enable growth of crystallographically aligned films.

Critical Review of Platinum Group Metal-Free Materials for Water Electrolysis: Transition from the Laboratory to the Market : Earth-abundant borides and phosphides as catalysts for sustainable hydrogen production

To combat the global problem of carbon dioxide emissions, hydrogen is the desired energy vector for the transition to environmentally benign fuel cell power. Water electrolysis (WE) is the major technology for sustainable hydrogen production. Despite the use of renewable solar and wind power as sources of electricity, one of the main barriers for the widespread implementation of WE is the scarcity and high cost of platinum group metals (pgms) that are used to catalyse the cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Hence, the critical pgm-based catalysts must be replaced with more sustainable alternatives for WE technologies to become commercially viable. This critical review describes the state-of-the-art pgm-free materials used in the WE application, with a major focus on phosphides and borides. Several emerging classes of HER and OER catalysts are reviewed and detailed structure-property correlations are comprehensively summarised. The influence of the crystallographic and electronic structures, morphology and bulk and surface chemistry of the catalysts on the activity towards OER and HER is discussed.

Enhanced ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of BCT-BZT at the morphotropic phase boundary driven by the coexistence of phases with different symmetries

The discovery of lead-free piezoelectric materials is crucial for future information and energy storage applications. Enhanced piezoelectric and other physical properties are commonly observed near the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) composition of ferroelectric solid solutions. The (1 – x)Ba(Zr 0.2 Ti 0.8 )O 3 -x(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO 3 (BZT-xBCT) system exhibits a large electromechanical response around its MPB region at x = 0.5. Here, we report experimental and theoretical results of BZT-xBCT over a wide composition range (0.3 ≤ x ≤ 1.0). X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy studies indicate a composition-induced structural phase transition from a rhombohedral (R3m) phase at x ≤ 0.4 to a tetragonal (P4mm) phase at x ≥ 0.6 through a multiphase coexistence region at 0.45 ≤ x ≤ 0.55 involving orthorhombic + tetragonal (Amm2 + P4mm) phases. First-principles calculations elucidate the phase competition in the coexistence region. The critical composition (x = 0.5) displays enhanced dielectric, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric properties, where notably d 33 ~ 320 pC/N. This paper provides clear evidence of Amm2+P4mm crystallographic phases in the MPB region, which is responsible for the improved functional properties.

Computational Study of Mixing Solid Materials for CO2 Capture Technology

CO2 is one of the major combustion products that, once released into the air, can contribute to global climate change. Solid sorbents have been reported as promising candidates for CO2 sorbent applications due to their high CO2 absorption capacities at moderate working temperatures. By combining thermodynamic database mining with first-principles density functional theory and phonon lattice dynamics calculations, the National Energy Technology Laboratory has proposed and validated a theoretical screening methodology to identify the most promising CO2 sorbent candidates from a vast array of possible solid materials. The advantage of this method is that it identifies the thermodynamic properties of the CO2 capture reaction as a function of temperature and gas pressure without any experimental input beyond crystallographic structural information of the solid phases involved. The calculated thermodynamic properties of solid materials versus temperature and pressure changes were further used to evaluate the equilibrium properties for the CO2 adsorption/desorption cycles. The selected CO2 sorbent candidates were further considered for experimental validations. In this presentation, the results of M2O/Al2O3 (M=Li, Na, K) mixtures (MAlO2 and M5AlO4) capturing CO2 will be demonstrated in detail.

Crystallographic orientation-dependent strain hardening in a precipitation-strengthened Al-Cu alloy

While the strengthening of Al-Cu alloys due to precipitation has been extensively studied, the effect of crystallographic orientation of the matrix and precipitates, as well as precipitate morphology, on the strain hardening behavior is not well understood. In this paper, we investigate this effect with in situ neutron diffraction during deformation of an Al-Cu alloy (206) after multiple aging treatments. Precipitate-dislocation interactions were found to change from precipitate shearing for microstructures predominantly containing GPI and θ" precipitates to Orowan looping for microstructures with primarily θ' and θ precipitates. Notably, significant anisotropy in strain hardening behavior was observed when θ' precipitates were present, which was attributed to crystallographic orientation dependent load transfer from the Al matrix to the θ' precipitates. The anisotropic load transfer is hypothesized to be caused by the extent of rotation of high aspect-ratio θ' precipitates, owing to dislocations looping around them during plastic deformation of the matrix. Predictions from an analytical model describing the anisotropic magnitude of load transfer from precipitate rotation agree well with experimental results, successfully validating the precipitate rotation hypothesis and explaining the anisotropic strain hardening behavior. This model allows for the prediction of stresses separately in the precipitate and matrix phases as a function of crystallographic orientation, only given the bulk mechanical properties.

High performance high-power textured Mn/Cu-doped PIN-PMN-PT ceramics

Piezoelectric ceramics with combinatory soft and hard characteristics are highly desired for high-power applications. However, it remains grand challenge to achieve simultaneous presence of hard (e.g. high coercive field, E c ; high mechanical quality factor, Q m ) and soft (e.g. high piezoelectric constant, d; high electromechanical coupling factor, k) piezoelectric properties in piezoelectric ceramics since the mechanism controlling the hard behavior (pinned domain walls) will significantly reduce the soft behavior. Here, we address this grand challenge and demonstrate <001> textured MnO 2 and CuO co-doped Pb(In 1/2 Nb 1/2 )O 3- Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3- PbTiO 3 (PIN-PMN-PT) ceramics exhibiting ultrahigh combined soft and hard piezoelectric properties (d 33 = 713 pC N –1 , k 31 = 0.52, Q m ≈950, E c = 9.6 kV cm –1 , tan δ = 0.45%). The outstanding electromechanical properties are explained by considering composition/phase selection, crystallographic anisotropy and defect engineering. Phase-field model in conjunction with high resolution electron microscopy and diffraction techniques is utilized to delineate the contributions arising from intrinsic piezoelectric response, domain dynamics, and local structural heterogeneity. Furthermore, these results will have significant impact in the development of high-power transducers and actuators.

Steric augmentation of three-coordinate Cu( I ) β-diketiminate isocyanide chromophores to achieve microsecond excited-state lifetime

Copper(I) complexes are promising alternatives to noble metal-based photosensitizers. A recently developed class of three-coordinate copper(I) charge-transfer chromophores, pairing β-diketiminate ligands with aryl isocyanides, exhibits excited-state lifetimes that are responsive to the steric profile of the isocyanide, reaching a value of nearly 300 nanoseconds when a substituted m-terphenyl isocyanide was used. In this work, we show that extreme steric augmentation of the β-diketiminate and m-terphenyl isocyanide ligands can lead to further improvements in excited-state lifetime, with one example surpassing 1 µs. This study includes a series of eight compounds of the general formula Cu(RNacNac)(CN-Ar X2 ), where RNacNac is the substituted β-diketiminate and CN-Ar X2 is the substituted m-terphenyl isocyanide. All eight compounds are crystallographically characterized, and their excited-state properties are thoroughly evaluated by a combination of steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence studies. This combined structural/photophysical approach unveils a correlation between common steric parameters, derived from buried volume (%V bur ) and solid angle analysis, and the excited-state lifetime. Our investigation reveals that the steric profile of the β-diketiminate has a much larger impact on the steric profile and lifetime, whereas the m-terphenyl isocyanide substituents have an unsystematic and subtle influence on these two correlated parameters. Nevertheless, judicious pairing of the two ligands is critical for achieving long excited-state lifetimes.

Ferromagnetic moment in the magnetoelectric antiferromagnet Co 4 ⁢Ta 2 ⁢O 9 : Evidence of the 𝑃⁢1 magnetic space group

Exploring ferromagnetic moments in magnetoelectric materials is of both fundamental and technological importance. It enables the control of the correlated state using an uncompensated moment. However, its material realization is challenging owing to its exclusive microscopic mechanisms. Here, we report a nearly isotropic ferromagnetic moment in the magnetoelectric antiferromagnet Co 4 ⁢Ta 2 ⁢O 9 , by performing dc and ac magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and neutron diffraction measurements on identical single crystals. Combined with the group theory analysis, we demonstrate a 𝑃⁢1 magnetic space group. This implies that physical activities can occur along any crystallographic direction, which explains the unusual magnetoelectric property of Co 4⁢ Ta 2⁢ O 9 . The ground state is classified as the M-type altermagnet based on the magnetic point group. Our study provides essential information to resolve the debate on the magnetic ground state and understand the magnetoelectric properties of the related compound with the prospect of observing and examining the 𝑃⁢1 magnetic space group or ferromagnet in ferroelectrics.

Automated, high-accuracy classification of textured microstructures using a convolutional neural network

Crystallographic texture is an important descriptor of material properties but requires time-intensive electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) for identifying grain orientations. While some metrics such as grain size or grain aspect ratio can distinguish textured microstructures from untextured microstructures after significant grain growth, such morphological differences are not always visually observable. This paper explores the use of deep learning to classify experimentally measured textured microstructures without knowledge of crystallographic orientation. A deep convolutional neural network is used to extract high-order morphological features from binary images to distinguish textured microstructures from untextured microstructures. The convolutional neural network results are compared with a statistical Kolmogorov–Smirnov tests with traditional morphological metrics for describing microstructures. Results show that the convolutional neural network achieves a significantly improved classification accuracy, particularly at early stages of grain growth, highlighting the capability of deep learning to identify the subtle morphological patterns resulting from texture. The results demonstrate the potential of a convolutional neural network as a tool for reliable and automated microstructure classification with minimal preprocessing.

Machine learning approaches for crystallographic classification from synthetic 2D X-ray diffraction data

Crystallographic structure identification is crucial for understanding material properties; however, current methodologies often depend on labor-intensive and time-consuming analyses of 2D X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns. To address these limitations, this study employs synthetic 2D XRD patterns combined with deep learning (DL) techniques to enable automated and high-throughput classification of the seven crystal systems and 230 space groups. We introduce the novel Auto Diffraction Pipeline, designed to generate synthetic 2D XRD spot patterns from crystallographic information files under diverse conditions, including varying zone axes, atomic substitution, atomic depletion and mechanical loading. These conditions enhance the realism of synthetic data, mitigating the scarcity of experimental datasets and enabling the creation of large representative training sets. Convolutional neural networks were trained and validated on these synthetic datasets to classify crystallographic structures across multiple scenarios. Our results demonstrate that integrating synthetic 2D XRD patterns with DL facilitates rapid, accurate and automated crystallographic classification, promoting the wider adoption of data-driven approaches in materials science.

Anisotropic Properties of Epitaxial Ferroelectric Lead-Free 0.5[Ba(Ti 0.8 Zr 0.2 )O 3 ]-0.5(Ba 0.7 Ca 0.3 )TiO 3 Films

As the energy demand is expected to double over the next 30 years, there has been a major initiative towards advancing the technology of both energy harvesting and storage for renewable energy. In this work, we explore a subset class of dielectrics for energy storage since ferroelectrics offer a unique combination of characteristics needed for energy storage devices. We investigate ferroelectric lead-free 0.5[Ba(Ti 0.8 Zr 0.2 )O 3 ]-0.5(Ba 0.7 Ca 0.3 )TiO 3 epitaxial thin films with different crystallographic orientations grown by pulsed laser deposition. We focus our attention on the influence of the crystallographic orientation on the microstructure, ferroelectric, and dielectric properties. Our results indicate an enhancement of the polarization and strong anisotropy in the dielectric response for the (001)-oriented film. The enhanced ferroelectric, energy storage, and dielectric properties of the (001)-oriented film is explained by the coexistence of orthorhombic-tetragonal phase, where the disordered local structure is in its free energy minimum.
