Charting the unknown: A dive into the world of standards mapping

When you hear standards mapping what do you think about? For the Secure Software Central (SSC) project this means comparing our process to the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) security control catalog. So how is it done? The project completed this summer can be broken down into three simple phases. Phase one consists of mapping the SSC process to the NIST’s security control catalog. While phase two entails mapping mitigations from a threat profile to NIST. Lastly phase three requires the creation of a knowledge base allowing for the reuse of controls across numerous projects This project presented a few different challenges: locating the correct control within the NIST catalog while correctly matching the proposed mitigations from the SSC team, accurately leveling the mitigation to the security level of the system, creating a toolbox to showcase a dataset of mitigations and standards to be used in current and future projects. each challenge allowed for opportunities in growth and understanding of how security controls can map to a governing set of standards. These standards maps are a crucial element to support the insights provided by the SSC team and allow the client to have confidence in the work being completed. My internship has allowed me to set and achieve many goals such as coming to understand that the field of cybersecurity truly is the right place for me. I have also learned that it’s ok to be wrong if you learn something from it. For significant accomplishments I have helped integrate standards mapping into the fabric of SSC. The field experience that I have gained such as interacting with the SSC team along with other senior staff and building a good rapport are crucial skills to. This time at PNNL has been an irreplaceable experience.

CubeSat Interplanetary Exploration: A Deep Dive into Nuclear Propulsion and Astrodynamics for Small Satellites

CubeSats are small satellites most commonly used by universities, however, nowadays places like NASA are looking to CubeSats for interplanetary missions. Because of their universal form fit it makes them cost effective, economical, and therefor desirable for deep space. To achieve deep space exploration, we must explore the applications of propulsion and astrodynamics on small satellites. This paper will touch on one scaling Ion and chemical propulsion as well as nuclear kilo reactors. Two choreographing a flight path for these small satellites and lastly designing an efficient cost-effective platform for CubeSats to get to deep space territory.

Deep Dive Topic: Analysis

This section focuses on analysis of I/O behavior and the feedback resulting from that analysis. We define analysis of I/O behavior as interpreting and deriving meaning from I/O instrumentation data. We define feedback as the product of the analysis process. Feedback can be thought of as the link between analysis and the subsequent response to that analysis, such as I/O tuning or policy decisions (see Section 4.4).Analysis and feedback may be consumed by either human stakeholders or machine algorithms. If it is to be consumed by human stakeholders, then the analysis process will likely emphasize understandable language and visualization techniques. If it is to be consumed by machine algorithms, then it will likely emphasize the use of machine-parsable, consistent formats that are suitable for ingestion by policy engines and data-mining tools.

EVs@Scale Lab Consortium High-Power Charging Pillar Deep-Dive Technical Meeting

Managed under the the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)-funded EVs@Scale Consortium, the High-Power Electric Vehicle Charging Hub Integration Platform (eCHIP) project aims to create an experimental platform for integration and control approaches in a direct current (DC), distribution-based high-power charging (HPC) system. The eCHIP project addresses the crucial need to design and validate efficient, low-cost, reliable, and interoperable solutions for a DC-coupled charging hub ("DC hub" for short). This report explains the design, development, and implementation process of an experimental platform for the DC hub. DC distribution holds significant potential for enhancing the operation of an HPC station architecture. However, there are challenges in establishing a DC hub, including interoperability, commoditization, distributed energy resource integration, stability, DC protection, and a lack of common system-level controllers. To address these challenges, a testing setup is required that accommodates commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products, as well as novel, in-house designed solutions, to evaluate different use cases at rated power and voltage levels. The developed proof-of-concept charging platform and open-source SEMS allow the development and testing of various controllers and chargers from different vendors. The DC hub platform integrated EVs, an ESS, a PV system, and building load to demonstrate the flexibility of the platform. The open-source SEMS controlled the devices within the hub using a rule-based implementation, realizing available standards.

EVs@Scale FUSE Fall '24 Deep Dive

Electric vehicle (EV) adoption will expand beyond light-duty vehicles charging at lower-power public locations and family residences to include medium- and heavy-duty applications with more powerful charging at public stations and private depots. The Vehicle Grid Integration (VGI) and Smart Charge Management (SCM) pillar in EVs@Scale supports multiple projects. The FUSE project is developing and evaluating enabling technologies, charging solutions, and infrastructure design approaches to investigate the intricacies and potential benefits of vehicle grid integration and the application of smart charge management to charging of electric vehicles at scale. This presentation delves into the technical findings of this research in 2024.

Exhaled breath condensate profiles of U.S. Navy divers following prolonged hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) and nitrogen-oxygen (Nitrox) chamber exposures

Prolonged exposure to hyperbaric hyperoxia can lead to pulmonary oxygen toxicity (PO 2 tox). PO 2 tox is a mission limiting factor for special operations forces divers using closed-circuit rebreathing apparatus and a potential side effect for patients undergoing hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) treatment. In this study, we aim to determine if there is a specific breath profile of compounds in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) that is indicative of the early stages of pulmonary hyperoxic stress/PO 2 tox. Using a double-blind, randomized 'sham' controlled, cross-over design 14 U.S. Navy trained diver volunteers breathed two different gas mixtures at an ambient pressure of 2 ATA (33 fsw, 10 msw) for 6.5 h. One test gas consisted of 100% O 2 (HBO) and the other was a gas mixture containing 30.6% O 2 with the balance N 2 (Nitrox). The high O 2 stress dive (HBO) and low O 2 stress dive (Nitrox) were separated by at least seven days and were conducted dry and at rest inside a hyperbaric chamber. EBC samples were taken immediately before and after each dive and subsequently underwent a targeted and untargeted metabolomics analysis using liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Following the HBO dive, 10 out of 14 subjects reported symptoms of the early stages of PO 2 tox and one subject terminated the dive early due to severe symptoms of PO 2 tox. No symptoms of PO 2 tox were reported following the nitrox dive. A partial least-squares discriminant analysis of the normalized (relative to pre-dive) untargeted data gave good classification abilities between the HBO and nitrox EBC with an AUC of 0.99 (±2%) and sensitivity and specificity of 0.93 (±10%) and 0.94 (±10%), respectively. Furthermore, the resulting classifications identified specific biomarkers that included human metabolites and lipids and their derivatives from different metabolic pathways that may explain metabolomic changes resulting from prolonged HBO exposure.
