STS-99 Payload Door Closure in Orbiter Processing Facility # 2, Endeavour, (SRTM)

The primary objective of the STS-99 mission was to complete high resolution mapping of large sections of the Earth's surface using the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), a specially modified radar system. This videotape shows the SRTM in Endeavour's payload bay, while the payload bay doors are being closed. There are some views of the Orbiter Processing Facility and technicians in the clean room environment.

Science/Engineering: Open Doors

Trends in American society are changing the role of women in science and engineering, but all the elements in our society change at different rates. Women, like men, must choose during their teenage years to continue their training in math or science, or they close the door that can lead them to futures in the interesting and satisfying fields of science and engineering. The key is to keep girls involved in the hard sciences through the adolescent crisis. Many mentoring and outreach programs exist to help young women cross this threshold. These programs include hands-on science experiences, mentoring or putting young women in contact with women scientists and engineers, and internships, Viewpoints and histories of contemporary women engineers are discussed.

Crystal growth furnace with trap doors

An improved furnace is provided for growing crystalline bodies from a melt. The improved furnace is characterized by a door assembly which is remotely controlled and is arranged so as to selectively shut off or permit communication between an access port in the furnace enclosure and a hot zone within that enclosure. The invention is especially adapted to facilitate use of crystal growing cartridges of the type disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 4,118,197.

It’s Hip To Be Square - Refurbishment of the NASA Langley National Transonic Facility Test Section Plenum Door

The “nearside” plenum door (NPD) at the 39-year-old NASA Langley Research Center (LARC) National Transonic Facility (NTF) has become increasingly recalcitrant during the opening /closing sequence. The NPD is the primary means of entry into the test section for personnel and for model installation. The sliding NPD hardware guide bearings have failed three (3) times within a one-year period and “quick fixes” were able to be made to guide rails, wheels and bearings to put the NPD back into operation. The NPD no longer can utilize a “quick fix” as the rolling hardware is at its limit for further modifications. This presentation will describe the NPD situation, the findings as to the cause of the periodic NPD failures, and the solution to remove, refurbish, and reinstall the NPD.

Simulated 8x8 Ku-Band Array Antenna Performance on Airplane Door

An 8x8, Ku-band antenna array composed of circular patches was simulated both on an infinite ground plane and mounted on an airplane door. The radiated far field was calculated for both cases to determine the effect of mounting the antenna on the side of the airplane. It was found that the main beam was relatively unaffected, while the sidelobes were increased by 15 to 20 dB at angles more than 30° off boresight..

What's Behind This Door: Prototype Immersive Technology (PIT) Lab - Episode

This is one video in the "What's Behind This Door?" series. This series is designed to give the public a behind-the-scenes look at the various analogs and testing facilities used by NASA on our journey to return to the Moon. This particular episode explores JSC's PIT Lab, which uses a virtual reality environment for training subjects by simulating various environments such as the lunar surface.

Initial comparisons of solar collector performance data obtained out-of doors and with a solar simulator

A facility was constructed to evaluate solar collector performance outdoors for conditions that would be encountered by collectors if they were incorporated in a solar heating/cooling system. In addition to obtaining initial collector performance data, the outdoor facility will enable collector durability and degradation rates to be evaluated for operating periods of several months. The data obtained from the outdoor tests were compared to collector performance predicted on the basis of results obtained with a solar simulator. The performance measured outdoors was less than the predicted performance.
