Inference of the optical depth to reionization τ from Planck CMB maps with convolutional neural networks

The optical depth to reionization, τ, is the least constrained parameter of the cosmological Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) model. To date, its most precise value is inferred from large-scale polarized cosmic microwave background (CMB) power spectra from the High Frequency Instrument (HFI) aboard the Planck satellite. These maps are known to contain significant contamination by residual non-Gaussian systematic effects, which are hard to model analytically. Therefore, robust constraints on τ are currently obtained through an empirical cross-spectrum likelihood built from simulations. In this paper, we present a likelihood-free inference of τ from polarized Planck HFI maps which, for the first time, is fully based on neural networks (NNs). NNs have the advantage of not requiring an analytical description of the data and can be trained on state-of-the-art simulations, combining the information from multiple channels. By using Gaussian sky simulations and Planck SRoll2 simulations, including CMB, noise, and residual instrumental systematic effects, we trained, tested, and validated NN models considering different setups. We inferred the value of τ directly from Stokes Q and U maps at ~4° pixel resolution, without computing angular power spectra. On Planck data, we obtained τ NN = 0.0579 ± 0.0082, which is compatible with current EE cross-spectrum results but with a ~30% larger uncertainty, which can be assigned to the inherent nonoptimality of our estimator and to the retraining procedure applied to avoid biases. While this paper does not improve on current cosmological constraints on τ, our analysis represents a first robust application of NN-based inference on real data, and highlights its potential as a promising tool for complementary analysis of near-future CMB experiments, also in view of the ongoing challenge to achieve the first detection of primordial gravitational waves.

Assessing the sources of reionization: a spectroscopic case study of a 30× lensed galaxy at z ~ 5 with Ly α , C IV, Mg ιι, and [Ne ιιι]

We present a detailed spectroscopic analysis of a galaxy at z ≃ 4.88 that is, by chance, magnified ~30× by gravitational lensing. Only three sources at z ≳ 5 are known with such high magnification. This particular source has been shown to exhibit widespread, high equivalent width ${{\rm C\, \small {IV}}}\ \lambda 1549\, \mathring{\rm A}$ emission, implying it is a unique example of a metal-poor galaxy with a hard radiation field, likely representing the galaxy population responsible for cosmic reionization. Using ultraviolet (UV) nebular line ratio diagnostics, Very Large Telescope (VLT)/X-shooter observations rule out strong active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity, indicating a stellar origin of the hard radiation field instead. We present a new detection of ${[{\rm Ne\, \small {III}}]}\ \lambda 3870\, \mathring{\rm A}$ and use the [${\rm Ne\, \small {III}}$]/[${\rm O\, \small {II}}$] line ratio to constrain the ionization parameter and gas-phase metallicity. Closely related to the commonly used [${\rm O\, \small {III}}$]/[${\rm O\, \small {II}}$] ratio, our [${\rm Ne\, \small {III}}$]/[${\rm O\, \small {II}}$] measurement shows this source is similar to local ‘Green Pea’ galaxies and Lyman-continuum leakers. It furthermore suggests this galaxy is more metal poor than expected from the fundamental metallicity relation, possibly as a consequence of excess gas accretion diluting the metallicity. Finally, we present the highest redshift detection of ${{\rm Mg\, \small {II}}}\ \lambda 2796\, \mathring{\rm A}$, observed at high equivalent width in emission, in contrast to more evolved systems predominantly exhibiting ${\rm Mg\, \small {II}}$ absorption. Strong ${\rm Mg\, \small {II}}$ emission has been observed in most z ~ 0 Lyman-continuum leakers known and has recently been proposed as an indirect tracer of escaping ionizing radiation. In conclusion, this strongly lensed galaxy, observed just $300\, \mathrm{Myr}$ after reionization ends, enables testing of observational diagnostics proposed to constrain the physical properties of distant galaxies in the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)/Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) era.

Hydrogen reionization ends by z = 5.3: Lyman-α optical depth measured by the XQR-30 sample

ABSTRACT The presence of excess scatter in the Ly-α forest at z ∼ 5.5, together with the existence of sporadic extended opaque Gunn-Peterson troughs, has started to provide robust evidence for a late end of hydrogen reionization. However, low data quality and systematic uncertainties complicate the use of Ly-α transmission as a precision probe of reionization’s end stages. In this paper, we assemble a sample of 67 quasar sightlines at z > 5.5 with high signal-to-noise ratios of >10 per ≤15 km s−1 spectral pixel, relying largely on the new XQR-30 quasar sample. XQR-30 is a large program on VLT/X-Shooter which obtained deep (SNR > 20 per pixel) spectra of 30 quasars at z > 5.7. We carefully account for systematics in continuum reconstruction, instrumentation, and contamination by damped Ly-α systems. We present improved measurements of the mean Ly-α transmission over 4.9 < z < 6.1. Using all known systematics in a forward modelling analysis, we find excellent agreement between the observed Ly-α transmission distributions and the homogeneous-UVB simulations Sherwood and Nyx up to z ≤ 5.2 (<1σ), and mild tension (∼2.5σ) at z = 5.3. Homogeneous UVB models are ruled out by excess Ly-α transmission scatter at z ≥ 5.4 with high confidence (>3.5σ). Our results indicate that reionization-related fluctuations, whether in the UVB, residual neutral hydrogen fraction, and/or IGM temperature, persist in the intergalactic medium until at least z = 5.3 (t = 1.1 Gyr after the big bang). This is further evidence for a late end to reionization.

Lyman alpha and Lyman continuum emission of Mg Ⅱ -selected star-forming galaxies

We present observations with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope of seven compact low-mass star-forming galaxies at redshifts, z, in the range 0.3161–0.4276, with various O 3 Mg 2 = [O iii] λ5007/Mg ii λ2796+2803 and Mg 2 = Mg ii λ2796/Mg ii λ2803 emission-line ratios. We aim to study the dependence of leaking Lyman continuum (LyC) emission on the characteristics of Mg ii emission together with the dependencies on other indirect indicators of escaping ionizing radiation. LyC emission with escape fractions f esc (LyC) = 3.1–4.6 percent is detected in four galaxies, whereas only 1σ upper limits of f esc (LyC) in the remaining three galaxies were derived. A strong narrow Lyα emission line with two peaks separated by V sep ~ 298–592 km s -1 was observed in four galaxies with detected LyC emission and very weak Lyα emission is observed in galaxies with LyC non-detections. Our new data confirm the tight anticorrelation between f esc (LyC) and V sep found for previous low-redshift galaxy samples. V sep remains the best indirect indicator of LyC leakage among all considered indicators. It is found that escaping LyC emission is detected predominantly in galaxies with Mg 2 ≳ 1.3. A tendency of an increase of f esc (LyC) with increasing of both the O 3 Mg 2 and Mg 2 is possibly present. However, there is substantial scatter in these relations not allowing their use for reliable prediction of f esc (LyC).

Magnetic fields in the formation of the first stars – II. Results

ABSTRACT Beginning with cosmological initial conditions at z = 100, we simulate the effects of magnetic fields on the formation of Population III stars and compare our results with the predictions of Paper I. We use gadget-2 to follow the evolution of the system while the field is weak. We introduce a new method for treating kinematic fields by tracking the evolution of the deformation tensor. The growth rate in this stage of the simulation is lower than expected for diffuse astrophysical plasmas, which have a very low resistivity (high magnetic Prandtl number); we attribute this to the large numerical resistivity in simulations, corresponding to a magnetic Prandtl number of order unity. When the magnetic field begins to be dynamically significant in the core of the minihalo at z = 27, we map it on to a uniform grid and follow the evolution in an adaptive mesh refinement, MHD simulation in orion2. The non-linear evolution of the field in the orion2 simulation violates flux-freezing and is consistent with the theory proposed by Xu & Lazarian. The fields approach equipartition with kinetic energy at densities ∼1010–1012 cm−3. When the same calculation is carried out in orion2 with no magnetic fields, several protostars form, ranging in mass from ∼1 to 30 M⊙; with magnetic fields, only a single ∼30 M⊙ protostar forms by the end of the simulation. Magnetic fields thus suppress the formation of low-mass Pop III stars, yielding a top-heavy Pop III initial mass function and contributing to the absence of observed Pop III stars.

Cosmic variance and the inhomogeneous UV luminosity function of galaxies during reionization

When the first galaxies formed and starlight escaped into the intergalactic medium to reionize it, galaxy formation and reionization were both highly inhomogeneous in time and space, and fully coupled by mutual feedback. To show how this imprinted the UV luminosity function (UVLF) of reionization-era galaxies, we use our large-scale, radiation-hydrodynamics simulation CoDa II to derive the time- and space-varying halo mass function and UVLF, from z ≃ 6–15. That UVLF correlates strongly with local reionization redshift: earlier-reionizing regions have UVLFs that are higher, more extended to brighter magnitudes, and flatter at the faint end than later-reionizing regions observed at the same z. In general, as a region reionizes, the faint-end slope of its local UVLF flattens, and, by z = 6 (when reionization ended), the global UVLF, too, exhibits a flattened faint-end slope, ‘rolling-over’ at M UV ≳ -17. CoDa II’s UVLF is broadly consistent with cluster-lensed galaxy observations of the Hubble Frontier Fields at z = 6–8, including the faint end, except for the faintest data point at z = 6, based on one galaxy at M UV = -12.5. According to CoDa II, the probability of observing the latter is $\sim 5~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$. However, the effective volume searched at this magnitude is very small, and is thus subject to significant cosmic variance. Here, we find that previous methods adopted to calculate the uncertainty due to cosmic variance underestimated it on such small scales by a factor of 2–4, primarily by underestimating the variance in halo abundance when the sample volume is small.

Convergence of small scale Ly α structure at high- z under different reionization scenarios

ABSTRACT The Ly α forest (LAF) at z > 5 probes the thermal and reionization history of the intergalactic medium (IGM) and the nature of dark matter, but its interpretation requires comparison to cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. At high-z, convergence of these simulations is more exacting since transmission is dominated by underdense voids that are challenging to resolve. With evidence mounting for a late end to reionization, small structures down to the sub-kpc level may survive to later times than conventionally thought due to the reduced time for pressure smoothing to impact the gas, further tightening simulation resolution requirements. We perform a suite of simulations using the Eulerian cosmological hydrodynamics code Nyx, spanning domain sizes of 1.25 − 10 h−1 Mpc and 5 − 80 h−1 kpc cells, and explore the interaction of these variables with the timing of reionization on the properties of the matter distribution and the simulated LAF at z = 5.5. In observable Ly α power, convergence within 10 per cent is achieved for k < 0.1 s km–1, but larger k shows deviation of up to 20 per cent. While a later reionization retains more small structure in the density field, because of the greater thermal broadening there is little difference in the convergence of LAF power between early (z = 9) and later (z = 6) reionizations. We conclude that at z ∼ 5.5, resolutions of 10 kpc are necessary for convergence of LAF power at k < 0.1 s km–1, while higher-k modes require higher resolution, and that the timing of reionization does not significantly impact convergence given realistic photoheating.

Measurements of the z > 5 Lyman-α forest flux autocorrelation functions from the extended XQR-30 data set

We present the first observational measurements of the Lyman-α (Ly α) forest flux autocorrelation functions in ten redshift bins from 5.1 ≤ z ≤ 6.0. We use a sample of 35 quasar sightlines at z > 5.7 from the extended XQR-30 data set; these data have signal-to-noise ratios of >20 per spectral pixel. We carefully account for systematic errors in continuum reconstruction, instrumentation, and contamination by damped Ly α systems. With these measurements, we introduce software tools to generate autocorrelation function measurements from any simulation. Our measurements of the smallest bin of the autocorrelation function increase with redshift when normalizing by the mean flux, $\langle{F}\rangle$. This increase may come from decreasing $\langle{F}\rangle$ or increasing mean free path of hydrogen-ionizing photons, λmfp. Recent work has shown that the autocorrelation function from simulations at z > 5 is sensitive to λmfp, a quantity that contains vital information on the ending of reionization. For an initial comparison, we show our autocorrelation measurements with simulation models for recently measured λmfp values and find good agreements. Further work in modelling and understanding the covariance matrices of the data is necessary to get robust measurements of λmfp from this data.

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: R eionization kSZ trispectrum methodology and limits

Patchy reionization generates kinematic Sunyaev–Zel’dovich (kSZ) anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Large-scale velocity perturbations along the line of sight modulate the small-scale kSZ power spectrum, leading to a trispectrum (or four-point function) in the CMB that depends on the physics of reionization. We investigate the challenges in detecting this trispectrum and use tools developed for CMB lensing, such as realization-dependent bias subtraction and cross-correlation based estimators, to counter uncertainties in the instrumental noise and assumed CMB power spectrum. We also find that both lensing and extragalactic foregrounds can impart larger trispectrum contributions than the reionization kSZ signal. We present a range of mitigation methods for both of these sources of contamination, validated on microwave-sky simulations. We use ACT DR6 and Planck data to calculate an upper limit on the reionization kSZ trispectrum from a measurement dominated by foregrounds. The upper limit is about 50 times the signal predicted from recent simulations.

Emergence of the temperature–density relation in the low-density intergalactic medium

We examine the evolution of the phase diagram of the low-density intergalactic medium during the Epoch of Reionization in simulation boxes with varying reionization histories from the Cosmic Reionization on Computers project. The probability density function (PDF) of gas temperature at fixed density exhibits two clear modes: a warm and a cold temperature mode, corresponding to the gas inside and outside of ionized bubbles. We find that the transition between the two modes is ‘universal’ in the sense that its timing is accurately parametrized by the value of the volume-weighted neutral fraction for any reionization history. This ‘universality’ is more complex than just a reflection of the fact that ionized gas is warm and neutral gas is cold: it holds for the transition at a fixed value of gas density, and gas at different densities transitions from the cold to the warm mode at different values of the neutral fraction, reflecting a non-trivial relationship between the ionization history and the evolving gas density PDF. Furthermore, the ‘emergence’ of the tight temperature–density relation in the warm mode is also approximately ‘universally’ controlled by the volume-weighted neutral fraction for any reionization history. In particular, the ‘emergence’ of the temperature–density relation (as quantified by the rapid decrease in its width) occurs when the neutral fraction is 10 –4 ≲ X HI ≲ 10 –3 for any reionization history. Our results indicate that the neutral fraction is a primary quantity controlling the various properties of the temperature–density relation, regardless of reionization history.

The impact of varying inhomogeneous reionization histories on metrics of Ly α opacity

The epoch of hydrogen reionization is complete by z = 5, but its progression at higher redshifts is uncertain. Measurements of Ly α forest opacity show large scatter at z < 6, suggestive of spatial fluctuations in neutral fraction, temperature, or ionizing background, either individually or in combination. However, there are degeneracies in the impact of such fluctuations, necessitating careful modelling. We develop a framework for modelling the reionization history and associated temperature fluctuations, with the intention of incorporating ionizing background fluctuations at a later time. We generate several reionization histories using seminumerical code AMBER, and implement them in the Nyx cosmological hydrodynamics code to examine the impact on the evolution of gas within the simulation and the associated metrics of the Ly α forest opacity. We find that the pressure smoothing scale within the intergalactic medium is strongly correlated with the adiabatic index of the temperature–density relation. We find that while models with 20 000 K photoheating at reionization are better able to reproduce the shape of the observed z = 5 1D flux power spectrum than colder ones, they fail to match the highest wavenumbers. The simulated autocorrelation function and optical depth distributions are systematically low and narrow, respectively, compared to the observed values, but are in better agreement when the reionization history is longer in duration, more symmetric in its distribution of reionization redshifts, or if there are remaining neutral regions at z < 6.

Identification of geostructures of continental crust particularly as they relate to mineral resource evaluation

The author has identified the following significant results. Preliminary examination of ERTS-1 imagery in central and northern Alaska substantiates the existence of a conjugate set of northeast and northwest faults suggested by linears noted on Nimbus 4 images. Linears of both trends are well expressed and several have been mapped as faults, including the Shaw Creek fault. Imagery provides new data to support the interpretation that the Kobuk Trench is the northern margin of a broad west-trending fault zone bounded on the north and south by strike-slip faults. In northwestern Alaska, MSS band 5 imagery shows Mississippian limestone as white, while shale, sandstone, and chert of other ages appear dark. As the limestone is the basal formation of the numerous thrust plates stacked in the area, images of band 5 will assist significantly in depicting the distribution of the thrust plates. In south-central Alaska the newly described Totshunda fault is readily identified and extends into areas not yet mapped. Also shown is another fault parallel to the south of the Totshunda which has not yet been recognized in the field.

Ice development on Lake Champlain

The author has identified the following significant results. Only one usable ERTS-1 scene was available for lake ice survey of Lake Champlain. The January 8, 1973, coverage (image no. 1169-11521) revealed the presence of various ice tones, patterns, and arrangements as well as open water. MSS band 5 imagery provided the most useful data. While it was not possible to differentiate open water from one - two day old ice, which only occurred over a small portion of the lake area, it was possible to interpret the tonal signatures of the frozen portion in terms of freezing history or age. The dark gray-tones of new, smooth ice contrasts with the medium gray-tones of older ice, and the rough texture of wind-jammed bay ice. Mapping of these patterns seems quite feasible with moderate enlargement of the scene (2 to 3X).

The Lyα Luminosity Function and Cosmic Reionization at z ~ 7.0: A Tale of Two LAGER Fields

We present the largest-ever sample of 79 Lyα emitters (LAEs) at z ~ 7.0 selected in the COSMOS and CDFS fields of the LAGER project (the Lyman Alpha Galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization). Our newly amassed ultradeep narrowband exposure and deeper/wider broadband images have more than doubled the number of LAEs in COSMOS, and we have selected 30 LAEs in the second field CDFS. We detect two large-scale LAE-overdense regions in the COSMOS that are likely protoclusters at the highest redshift to date. We perform injection and recovery simulations to derive the sample incompleteness. We show that significant incompleteness comes from blending with foreground sources, which, however, has not been corrected in LAE luminosity functions (LFs) in the literature. The bright-end bump in the Lyα LF in COSMOS is confirmed with six (two newly selected) luminous LAEs (LLyα > 1043.3 erg s−1). Interestingly, the bump is absent in CDFS, in which only one luminous LAE is detected. Meanwhile, the faint-end LFs from the two fields agree well with each other. The six luminous LAEs in COSMOS coincide with two LAE-overdense regions, while such regions are not seen in CDFS. The bright-end LF bump could be attributed to ionized bubbles in a patchy reionization. It appears associated with cosmic overdensities and thus supports an inside-out reionization topology at z ~ 7.0, i.e., the high-density peaks were ionized earlier compared to the voids. An average neutral hydrogen fraction of xH I ~ 0.2–0.4 is derived at z ~ 7.0 based on the cosmic evolution of the Lyα LF.

Near-infrared Spectroscopy of Galaxies During Reionization: Measuring C III] in a Galaxy at z = 7.5

We present Keck/MOSFIRE H-band spectroscopy targeting C III] λ1907, 1909 in a z = 7.5056 galaxy previously identified via Lyα emission. We detect strong line emission at 1.621 ± 0.002 mm with a line flux of (2.63 ± 0.52) × 10−18 erg s−1cm−2. We tentatively identify this line as [C III] λ1907, but we are unable to detect C III] λ1909 owing to sky emission at the expected location. This gives a galaxy systemic redshift, zsys = 7.5032 ± 0.0003, with a velocity offset to Lyα of DvLya = 88 ± 27 km s−1. The ratio of combined C III]/Lyα is 0.30–0.45, one of the highest values measured for any z > 2 galaxy. We do not detect Si III] λλ1883, 1892, and place an upper limit on Si III]/C III] < 0.35 (2σ). Comparing our results to photoionization models, the C III] equivalent width (WC III] = 16.23 ± 2.32 Å), low Si III]/C III] ratio, and high implied [O III] equivalent width (from the Spitzer/IRAC [3.6]–[4.5] ~- 0.8 mag color) require subsolar metallicities (Z ~- 0.1–0.2 Zsun) and a high ionization parameter, log U >~ 1.5. These results favor models that produce higher ionization, such as the BPASS models for the photospheres of high-mass stars, and that include both binary stellar populations and/or an IMF that extends to 300 Me. The combined C III] equivalent width and [3.6]–[4.5] color are more consistent with ionization from young stars than active galactic nuclei (AGNs); however, we cannot rule out ionization from a combination of an AGN and young stars. We make predictions for James Webb Space Telescope spectroscopy using these different models, which will ultimately test the nature of the ionizing radiation in this source.

The 21-cm Signal From the Cosmic Dawn: Metallicity Dependence of High Mass X-Ray Binaries

X-rays from high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) are likely the main source of heating of the intergalactic medium (IGM) during Cosmic Dawn (CD), before the completion of reionization. This Epoch of Heating (EoH; z ∼10–15) should soon be detected via the redshifted 21-cm line from neutral hydrogen, allowing us to indirectly study the properties of HMXBs in the unseen, first galaxies. Low-redshift observations, as well as theoretical models, imply that the integrated X-ray luminosity to star formation rate of HMXBs (L_X/SFR) should increase in metal-poor environments, typical of early galaxies. Here, we study the impact of the metallicity (Z) dependence of L_X/SFR during the EoH. For our fiducial models, galaxies with star formation rates of order 10^(−3)–10^(−1)M_⊙ yr^(−1) and metallicities of order 10^(−3) –10^(−2) Z_⊙ are the dominant contributors to the X-ray background (XRB) during this period. Different L_X/SFR–Z relations result in factors of ∼ 3 differences in these ranges, as well as in the mean IGM temperature and the large-scale 21-cm power, at a given redshift. We compute mock 21-cm observations adopting as a baseline a 1000 h integration with the upcoming Square Kilometer Array (SKA) for two different L_X/SFR–Z relations. We perform inference on these mock observations using the common simplification of a constant L_X/SFR, finding that constant L_X/SFR models can recover the IGM evolution of the more complicated L_X/SFR–Z simulations only during the EoH. At z < 10, where the typical galaxies are more polluted, constant L_X/SFR models overpredict the XRB and its relative contribution to the early stages of the reionization.
