Physical and Operational Status of the Photovoltaic Systems in the Municipality of Pinotepa de Don Luis, Oaxaca, One Year after Their Installation [Estado fisico y operativo de los sistemas fotovoltaicos en el municipio de Pinotepa de Don Luis, Oaxaca un ano despues de su instalacion]

In November 1990, an inspection visit was made to the residential lighting photovoltaic systems that had been installed approximately one year before in the rural communities of the Municipality of Pinotepa de Don Luis, in the State of Oaxaca. The main purpose of the visit was to evaluate the physical and operational status of these systems. The systems typically consist of a photovoltaic module with a capacity of 30 or 35 Watts, an automotive type battery, an indicator of the status of charge of the battery, 3 fluorescent lamps and the corresponding installation, including cables, connection or outlet box and switches. It can be seen that the systems are in good physical condition and do not show any signs of intentionally caused damage. However, the incidence of failures is higher than what had been expected; therefore the operational status of these systems is considered to be below a level that could be accepted, with a tendency to getting worse. The main problem that has been detected is the lack of automatic charge controllers. This problem has caused other important failures. Serious deficiencies were appreciated in the installations, which show evidence of the poor workmanship of the installers. The lack of system standardization is evident, both regarding the components and the installation. As a consequence, there are technical factors which indicate that the installed systems will keep deteriorating at a rate faster than normal, and will stop operating in a short time unless urgent preventive and corrective measures are taken. The attitude of the users with respect to the systems is generally positive. However, there are elements that make the correct operation and maintenance of these systems a very difficult task. The users did not receive any training regarding the best way to operate and take care of their systems, nor any other information in relation to their technical limitations.

Superconductivity in a strange metal

In a gas of charged particles with the density n, mass m, and charge e, the electrical conductivity σ is given by the Drude formula: σ = ne 2 /mΓ, where Γ is the scattering rate. Standard metals are well described by Landau's Fermi Liquid (FL) theory, in which the electric current is carried by quasi-particles, low-energy excitations of the FL that resemble electrons with some effective mass m*. The scattering rate Γ= 1/τ= v F /l, where t is the (momentum) relaxation) time, l is the mean-free path, and v F is the Fermi velocity, can be expressed ("Matthiessen's Rule") as a sum of contributions from various scattering channels: Γ = Γ 0 + Γ el-el + Γ el-ph + …, where Γ 0 describes scattering on lattice imperfections, Γ el-el the electron-electron scattering, Γ el-ph the electron-phonon scattering, etc. Of these, Γ 0 = v F /l 0 , where l 0 is the average distance between the defects, is temperature-independent. Γ el-el should scale as T 2 because of Fermi statistics; for two electrons to scatter on one another, both must come from the "Debye shell" of the width k B T/E F , where k B is the Boltzmann constant and E F is the Fermi energy. Γ el-ph typically grows as T 5 , so we expect this to overwhelm the other channels at a high enough T. However, since l cannot be shorter than the distance between the atoms, the total Γ saturates at Mott-Ioffe-Regel (MIR) limit, roughly v F /a 0 , where v F is the Fermi velocity and a 0 is the lattice constant. The resistivity should also saturate at low T, at ρ 0 = m*v F /ne 2 l 0 T. FL theory also describes other electronic properties; e.g., it predicts that in the magnetic field B, the resistivity of the metal should increase with B 2 , because σ(B) = σ(B=0)/(1 + (ω c /Γ) 2 ), where ω c = eB/m*.

Generalized and Mechanistic PV Module Performance Prediction From Computer Vision and Machine Learning on Electroluminescence Images

Electroluminescence (EL) imaging of photovoltiac (PV) modules offers high-speed, high-resolution information about device performance, affording opportunities for greater insight and efficiency in module characterization across manufacturing, research and development, and power plant operations and management. Predicting module electrical properties from EL image features is a critical step toward these applications. In this article, we demonstrate quantification of both generalized and performance mechanism-specific EL image features, using pixel intensity-based and machine learning classification algorithms. From EL image features, we build predictive models for PV module power and series resistance, using time-series current-voltage (I-V) and EL data obtained stepwise on five brands of modules spanning three Si cell types through two accelerated exposures: damp heat (DH) (85°C/85% RH) and thermal cycling (TC) (IEC 61215). Overall, 195 pairs of EL images and I-V characteristics were analyzed, yielding 11700 individual PV cell images. A convolutional neural network was built to classify cells by the severity of busbar corrosion with high accuracy (95%). Generalized power predictive models estimated the maximum power of PV modules from EL images with high confidence and an adjusted-R 2 of 0.88, across all module brands and cell types in extended DH and TC exposures. Mechanistic degradation prediction was demonstrated by quantification of busbar corrosion in EL images of three module brands in DH, and subsequent modeling of series resistance using these mechanism-specific EL image features. For modules exhibiting busbar corrosion, we demonstrated series resistance predictive models with adjusted-R 2 of up to 0.73.

The Influence of ENSO Diversity on Future Atlantic Tropical Cyclone Activity

El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) influences seasonal Atlantic tropical cyclone (TC) activity by impacting environmental conditions important for TC genesis. However, the influence of future climate change on the teleconnection between ENSO and Atlantic TCs is uncertain, as climate change is expected to impact both ENSO and the mean climate state. We used the Weather Research and Forecasting Model on a tropical channel domain to simulate 5-member ensembles of Atlantic TC seasons in historical and future climates under different ENSO conditions. Experiments were forced with idealized sea surface temperature configurations based on the Community Earth System Model (CESM) Large Ensemble representing: a monthly varying climatology, eastern Pacific El Niño, central Pacific El Niño, and La Niña. The historical simulations produced fewer Atlantic TCs during eastern Pacific El Niño compared to central Pacific El Niño, consistent with observations and other modeling studies. For each ENSO state, the future simulations produced a similar teleconnection with Atlantic TCs as in the historical simulations. Specifically, La Niña continues to enhance Atlantic TC activity, and El Niño continues to suppress Atlantic TCs, with greater suppression during eastern Pacific El Niño compared to central Pacific El Niño. In addition, we found a decrease in the Atlantic TC frequency in the future relative to historical regardless of ENSO state, which was associated with a future increase in northern tropical Atlantic vertical wind shear and a future decrease in the zonal tropical Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) gradient, corresponding to a more El Niño–like mean climate state. Our results indicate that ENSO will remain useful for seasonal Atlantic TC prediction in the future.
