Carbon Dioxide Reduction Systems

The Methoxy system for regenerating oxygen from carbon dioxide was studied. Experiments indicate that the reaction between carbon dioxide and hydrogen can be carried out with ease in an efficient manner and with excellent heat conservation. A small reactor capable of handling the C02 expired by three men has been built and operated. The decomposition of methane by therma1,arc and catalytic processes was studied. Both the arc and catalytic processes gave encouraging results with over 90 percent of the methane being decomposed to carbon and hydrogen in some of the catalytic processes. Control of the carbon deposition in both the catalytic and arc processes is of great importance to prevent catalyst deactivation and short circuiting of electrical equipment. Sensitive analytical techniques have been developed for all of the components present in the reactor effluent streams.

The navigation of homing pigeons: Do they use sun Navigation?

Experiments to determine the dependence of homing pigeons on the sun as a navigational cue are discussed. Various methods were employed to interrupt the circadian rhythms of the pigeons prior to release. It was determined that the sun may serve as a compass, but that topographic features are more important for navigation. The effects of a magnetic field produced by electric equipment carried by the bird were also investigated. It was concluded that magnetic fields may have a small effect on the homing ability. The exact nature of the homing pigeon's navigational ability is still unknown after years of elaborate experimentation.

Hand tools: A compilation

A selection of new hand tools, modifications of existing tools, and techniques developed in the course of NASA research and development projects are presented. The items are presented in two sections: tools for cable and connector applications, and tools for welding applications. Safety is emphasized, together with ease of operation and use in restricted areas or hazardous environments. The discussions are directed primarily toward the technician engaged in assembly or maintenance of mechanical or electrical equipment.

Potential missions for advanced airships

The freight commodity transport and the intercity passenger travel markets in the U.S. for 1967 and 1972 are analyzed, along with 1985 estimates, in order to establish the size, speed and cost enabling use of the airship in these markets. Items examined include frozen meat, confectionary, drugs, electrical equipment, mechanical parts, clothing and plastic products. A 50 ton/500 passenger payload capacity, a cruise speed of 100 kt and a VTOL capability or at minimum short take-off and vertical landing capability are needed to make an LTA vehicle viable in the transport market if it had a direct operating cost of $500 to $800 per hour for freight carrying and $1100 to $2700 an hour in passenger service with utilizations between 2000 hours and 4000 hours a year.

Free vibrations of the ERDA-NASA 100 kW wind turbine

The ERDA-NASA wind turbine (windmill), which consists of a 93-foot truss tower, a bed plate that supports mechanical and electrical equipment, and two 62.5-foot long blades, was analyzed to determine its free vibrations using NASTRAN. The finite element representation of the system consisted of beam and plate elements. The free vibrations of the tower alone, the blades alone, and the complete system were determined experimentally in the field. These results were obtained by instrumenting the tower or blades with an accelerometer and impacting the components with an instrumented mass. The predicted results for natural frequencies and mode shapes were in excellent agreement with measured data.

Preliminary burn and impact tests of hybrid polymeric composites

Free graphite fibers released into the environment from resin matrix composite components, as a result of fire and/or explosion, pose a potential hazard to electrical equipment. An approach to prevent the fibers from becoming airborne is to use hybrid composite materials which retain the fibers at the burn site. Test results are presented for three hybrid composites that were exposed to a simulation of an aircraft fire and explosion. The hybrid systems consisted of 16 plies of graphite-epoxy with two plies of Kevlar-, S-glass-, or boron-epoxy on each face. Two different test environments were used. In one environment, specimens were heated by convection only, and then impacted by a falling mass. In the other environment, specimens were heated by convection and by radiation, but were not impacted. The convective heat flux was about 100-120 kW/m in both environments and the radiative flux was about 110 kW/sq m.

HEPP - A low temperature Heat Pipe Experiment Package developed for flight on-board the Long Duration Exposure Facility /LDEF/

The Heat Pipe Experiment Package (HEPP) is designed to provide a flight evaluation system for low temperature heat pipes. The HEPP will be flown aboard the Long Duration Exposure Facility which will be launched and retrieved as part of the Space Shuttle program. The experiment contains two heat pipes: an axially grooved fixed conductance heat pipe and a liquid blockage thermal diode. A phase change material canister is also integrated with a radiant cooler system. Additional hardware consists of supporting electrical equipment, including electronics for signal conditioning and command functions, a data recorder, and a hermetically sealed battery which powers the experiment. A thermal model was developed to simulate the behavior of the HEPP and a ground test program was conducted to verify the predicted performance of the equipment.
