Effective field theory for deformed odd-mass nuclei

We develop an effective field theory (EFT) for deformed odd-mass nuclei. These are described as an axially symmetric core to which a nucleon is coupled. In the coordinate system fixed to the core the nucleon is subject to an axially symmetric potential. Power counting is based on the separation of scales between low-lying rotations and higher-lying states of the core. In leading order, core and nucleon are coupled by universal derivative terms. These comprise a covariant derivative and gauge potentials which account for Coriolis forces and relate to Berry-phase phenomena. At leading order, the EFT combines the particle-rotor and Nilsson models. Here, we work out the EFT up to next-to-leading order and illustrate the results in 239 Pu and 187 Os . At leading order, odd-mass nuclei with rotational bandheads that are close in energy and differ by one unit of angular momentum are triaxially deformed. For bandheads that are well separated in energy, triaxiality becomes a subleading effect. The EFT developed in this paper presents a model-independent approach to the particle-rotor system that is capable of systematic improvement.

Muon capture on the deuteron in chiral effective field theory

Here, we consider the capture of a muon on a deuteron. An uncertainty analysis of the dominant channels is important for a careful analysis of forthcoming experimental data. We quantify the theoretical uncertainties of chiral effective-field-theory predictions of the muon-deuteron capture rate from the relevant neutron-neutron partial wave channels in the final state. We study the dependence on the cutoff used to regularize the interactions, low-energy constants calibrated using different fitting data and strategies, and truncation of the effective-field-theory expansion of the currents. Combining these approaches gives as an estimate of $Γ^{1/2}_{μd}$ = 399.1 ± 7.6 ± 4.4 s –1 for capture from the atomic doublet state, and $Γ^{3/2}_{μd}$= 12.31 ± 0.47 ± 0.04 s –1 for capture from the quartet state and the first and second uncertainties given here are due to the effective field theory truncation error and the uncertainty in the axial radius, respectively.

From optimal observables to machine learning: an effective-field-theory analysis of e + e − → W + W − at future lepton colliders

We apply machine-learning techniques to the effective-field-theory analysis of the e + e − → W + W − processes at future lepton colliders, and demonstrate their advantages in comparison with conventional methods, such as optimal observables. In particular, we show that machine-learning methods are more robust to detector effects and backgrounds, and could in principle produce unbiased results with sufficient Monte Carlo simulation samples that accurately describe experiments. This is crucial for the analyses at future lepton colliders given the outstanding precision of the e + e − → W + W − measurement (~ 10−4 in terms of anomalous triple gauge couplings or even better) that can be reached. Our framework can be generalized to other effective-field-theory analyses, such as the one of e + e − → t t ¯ or similar processes at muon colliders.

Three-body resonances in pionless effective field theory

We investigate the appearance of resonances in three-body systems using pionless effective field theory at leading order with two complementary methods. The Faddeev equation is analytically continued to the unphysical sheet adjacent to the positive real energy axis using a contour rotation. We consider both the three-boson system and the three-neutron system. For the former, we calculate the trajectory of Borromean three-body Efimov states turning into resonances as they cross the three-body threshold. For the latter, we find no sign of three-body resonances or virtual states at leading order. Furthermore, this result is validated by exploring the level structure of three-body states in a finite volume approach.

Recent progresses in few-nucleon structure and dynamics in chiral effective field theory

The most recent progresses made within the framework of chiral effective field theory for few-nucleon structure and low-energy reactions are here presented. In particular, for the 𝐴 = 2 sector, the study of muon capture on deuteron is reviewed. Then, the results obtained using the Hyperspherical Harmonics ab-initiomethod for the 4He monopole form factor and the 3He(®𝑛, 𝑝) 3H parity-conserving asymmetry are described.

The Equation of State of Neutron-Rich Matter at Fourth Order of Chiral Effective Field Theory and the Radius of a Medium-Mass Neutron Star

We report neutron star predictions based on our most recent equations of state. These are derived from chiral effective field theory, which allows for a systematic development of nuclear forces, order by order. We utilize high-quality two-nucleon interactions and include all three-nucleon forces up to fourth order in the chiral expansion. Our ab initio predictions are restricted to the domain of applicability of chiral effective field theory. However, stellar matter in the interior of neutron stars can be up to several times denser than normal nuclear matter at saturation, and its composition is essentially unknown. Following established practices, we extend our microscopic predictions to higher densities matching piecewise polytropes. The radius of the average-size neutron star, about 1.4 solar masses, is sensitive to the pressure at normal densities, and thus it is suitable to constrain ab initio theories of the equation of state. For this reason, we focus on the radius of medium-mass stars. We compare our results with other theoretical predictions and recent constraints.

Tabulated equations of state from models informed by chiral effective field theory

Abstract We construct four equation of state (EoS) tables, tabulated over a range of temperatures, densities, and charge fractions, relevant for neutron star applications such as simulations of neutron star mergers. The EoS are computed from a relativistic mean-field theory constrained by the pure neutron matter EoS from chiral effective field theory, inferred properties of isospin-symmetric nuclear matter, and astrophysical observations of neutron star structure. To model nuclear matter at low densities, we attach an EoS that models inhomogeneous nuclear matter at arbitrary temperatures and charge fractions. The four EoS tables we develop are available from the CompOSE EoS repository https://compose.obspm.fr/eos/297 and gitlab.com/ahaber/qmc-rmf-tables .

Maximally local two-nucleon interactions at N 3 LO in Δ -less chiral effective field theory

We present new maximally local two-nucleon interactions derived in Δ -less chiral effective field theory up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order ( N 3 LO ), which include all contact and pion-exchange contributions to the nuclear Hamiltonian up to this order. Our interactions are fit to nucleon-nucleon phase shifts using a Bayesian statistical approach, and explore a wide cutoff range from 0.6 – 0.9 fm ( ≈ 660 – 440 MeV ). These interactions can be straightforwardly employed in quantum Monte Carlo methods, such as the auxiliary field diffusion Monte Carlo method. Together with local three-nucleon forces, calculations with these new interactions will provide improved benchmarks for the structure of atomic nuclei and serve as crucial input to analyses of astrophysical phenomena of neutron stars, such as binary neutron-star mergers. Nuclear effective field theory: Status and perspectives

The nuclear physics landscape has been redesigned as a sequence of effective field theories (EFTs) connected to the Standard Model through symmetries and lattice simulations of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). EFTs in this sequence are expansions around different low-energy limits of QCD, each with its own characteristics, scales, and ranges of applicability regarding energy and number of nucleons. We review each of the three main nuclear EFTs---Chiral, Pionless, Halo/Cluster---highlighting their similarities, differences, and connections. Here, in doing so, we survey the structural properties and reactions of nuclei that have been derived from the \abinitio solution of the few- and many-body problem built upon EFT input.

Constraints on effective field theory couplings using 311.2 days of LUX data

We report here the results of an Effective Field Theory (EFT) WIMP search analysis using LUX data. We build upon previous LUX analyses by extending the search window to include nuclear recoil energies up to $\sim$180 keV$_{nr}$, requiring a reassessment of data quality cuts and background models. In order to use a binned Profile Likelihood statistical framework, the development of new analysis techniques to account for higher-energy backgrounds was required. With a 3.14$\times10^4$ kg$\cdot$day exposure using data collected between 2014 and 2016, we set 90\% C.L. exclusion limits on non-relativistic EFT WIMP couplings to neutrons and protons, providing the most stringent constraints on a significant fraction of the possible EFT WIMP interactions. Additionally, we report world-leading exclusion limits on inelastic EFT WIMP-nucleon recoils.

2 νββ spectrum in chiral effective field theory

We investigate two-neutrino double beta decay (2νββ) in chiral effective field theory. We find contributions from weak magnetism and double-weak pion-exchange at next-to-leading-order in the chiral power counting. We discuss the impact of the chiral corrections on the electron spectra and find that they should be included in analyses of 2νββ decay that aim to uncover new physics signatures in the electron spectrum. We illustrate this point by revisiting the effect of sterile neutrinos and non-standard charged interactions. We also find that the pion-exchange contributions involve nuclear matrix elements that are related to those appearing in neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ). We investigate whether the 0νββ nuclear matrix elements can be obtained from detailed measurements of the energy spectrum of the outgoing electrons in 2νββ transitions.

The importance of few-nucleon forces in chiral effective field theory

We study the importance of few-nucleon forces in chiral effective field theory for describing many-nucleon systems. A combinatorial argument suggests that three-nucleon forces-which are conventionally regarded as next-to-next-to-leading order-should accompany the two-nucleon force already at leading order (LO) starting with mass number $A$ ≃10–20. We find that this promotion enables the first realistic description of the 16 O ground state based on a renormalization-group-invariant LO interaction. We also performed coupled-cluster calculations of the equation of state for symmetric nuclear matter and our results indicate that LO four-nucleon forces could play a crucial role for describing heavy-mass nuclei. In conclusion, the enhancement mechanism we found is very general and could be important also in other many-body problems.

Fermion geometry and the renormalization of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory

The geometry of field space governs on-shell scattering amplitudes. We formulate a geometric description of effective field theories which extends previous results for scalars and gauge fields to fermions. The field-space geometry reorganizes and simplifies the computation of quantum loop corrections. Using this geometric framework, we calculate the fermion loop contributions to the renormalization group equations for bosonic operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory up to mass dimension eight.

Effective field theory for dilute Fermi systems at fourth order

We discuss high-order calculations in perturbative effective field theory for fermions at low energy scales. The Fermi-momentum or k F a s as expansion for the ground-state energy of the dilute Fermi gas is calculated to fourth order, both in cutoff regularization and in dimensional regularization. For the case of spin one-half fermions we find from a Bayesian analysis that the expansion is well converged at this order for |k F a s |≲ 0.5. Furthermore, we show that Padé-Borel resummations can improve the convergence for |k F a s |≲ 1. Here, our results provide important constraints for nonperturbative calculations of ultracold atoms and dilute neutron matter.

Peeking into the next decade in large-scale structure cosmology with its Effective Field Theory

After the successful full-shape analyses of BOSS data using the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure, we investigate what upcoming galaxy surveys might achieve. We introduce a “perturbativity prior” that ensures that loop terms are as large as theoretically expected, which is effective in the case of a large number of EFT parameters. After validating our technique by comparison with already-performed analyses of BOSS data, we provide Fisher forecasts using the one-loop prediction for power spectrum and bispectrum for two benchmark surveys: DESI and MegaMapper. We find overall great improvements on the cosmological parameters. In particular, we find that MegaMapper (DESI) should obtain at least a 12σ (2σ) evidence for non-vanishing neutrino masses, bound the curvature Ω k to 0.0012 (0.012), and primordial inflationary non-Gaussianities as follows: f NL loc. to ± 0.26 (3.3), f NL eq. to ±16 (92), f NL orth. to ± 4.2 (27). Such measurements would provide much insight on the theory of Inflation. We investigate the limiting factor of shot noise and ignorance of the EFT parameters.

Quantum Monte Carlo calculation of 𝛿 NS in 10 C using an effective field theory approach

Here, we compute radiative corrections to the superallowed 𝛽 decay of 10 C in an effective field theory approach using nuclear matrix elements obtained from quantum Monte Carlo calculations. These corrections are an important ingredient in the extraction of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Masakawa quark mixing matrix element 𝑉 𝑢⁢𝑑 , and the role of this work is to illuminate the uncertainties arising from nuclear structure. Our results provide good agreement with both the traditional extraction of 𝑉 𝑢⁢𝑑 , as well as with a more recent evaluation performed using the no-core shell model and a dispersion formalism. The dominant uncertainty in this approach is the presence of two unknown low-energy constants that enter into the relevant nuclear matrix elements. Future determinations of these low-energy constants—either from QCD or modeling them with two nucleon amplitudes—would improve the precision of the extraction in this formalism.

An effective field theory approach to quarkonium at small transverse momentum

In this work we apply effective field theory (EFT) to observables in quarkonium production and decay that are sensitive to soft gluon radiation, in particular measurements that are sensitive to small transverse momentum. Within the EFT framework we study χQ decay to light quarks followed by the fragmentation of those quarks to light hadrons. We derive a factorization theorem that involves transverse momentum distribution (TMD) fragmentation functions and new quarkonium TMD shape functions. We derive renormalization group equations, both in rapidity and virtuality, which are used to evolve the different terms in the factorization theorem to resum large logarithms. This theoretical framework will provide a systematic treatment of quarkonium production and decay processes in TMD sensitive measurements.

Chiral Effective Field Theory’s Impact on Advancing Quantum Monte Carlo Methods

Thirty years ago, Steven Weinberg published his seminal paper on “Nuclear Forces from chiral Lagrangians” which has revolutionized the field of theoretical nuclear physics. Nowadays, interactions derived from chiral effective field theory are routinely used to describe nuclear systems ranging from atomic nuclei to the dense matter explored in the core of neutron stars with theoretical uncertainty estimates. Here, in our contribution to the special issue “Celebrating 30 years of Steven Weinberg’s paper Nuclear Forces from Chiral Lagrangians”, we focus on the impact that chiral effective field theory interactions have played in advancing microscopic studies of atomic nuclei and the nuclear-matter equation of state using quantum Monte Carlo methods.
