Modular flow of excited states

We develop new techniques for studying the modular and the relative modular flows of general excited states. We show that the class of states obtained by acting on the vacuum (or any cyclic and separating state) with invertible operators from the algebra of a region is dense in the Hilbert space. This enables us to express the modular and the relative modular operators, as well as the relative entropies of generic excited states in terms of the vacuum modular operator and the operator that creates the state. In particular, the modular and the relative modular flows of any state can be expanded in terms of the modular flow of operators in vacuum. We illustrate the formalism with simple examples including states close to the vacuum, and coherent and squeezed states in generalized free field theory.

Entropy variations and light ray operators from replica defects

We study the defect operator product expansion (OPE) of displacement operators in free and interacting conformal field theories using replica methods. We show that as n approaches 1 a contact term can emerge when the OPE contains defect operators of twist d - 2. For interacting theories and general states we give evidence that the only possibility is from the defect operator that becomes the stress tensor in the n → 1 limit. This implies that the quantum null energy condition (QNEC) is always saturated for CFTs with a twist gap. As a check, we show independently that in a large class of near vacuum states, the second variation of the entanglement entropy is given by a simple correlation function of averaged null energy operators as studied by Hofman and Maldacena. This suggests that sub-leading terms in the defect OPE are controlled by a defect version of the spin-3 non-local light ray operator and we speculate about the possible origin of such a defect operator. For free theories this contribution condenses to a contact term that leads to violations of QNEC saturation.

Analyticity and the Unruh effect: a study of local modular flow

The Unruh effect can be formulated as the statement that the Minkowski vacuum in a Rindler wedge has a boost as its modular flow. In recent years, other examples of states with geometrically local modular flow have played important roles in understanding energy and entropy in quantum field theory and quantum gravity. Here I initiate a general study of the settings in which geometric modular flow can arise, showing (i) that any geometric modular flow must be a conformal symmetry of the background spacetime, and (ii) that in a well behaved class of “weakly analytic” states, geometric modular flow must be future-directed. I further argue that if a geometric transformation is conformal but not isometric, then it can only be realized as modular flow in a conformal field theory. Finally, I discuss a few settings in which converse results can be shown — i.e., settings in which a state can be constructed whose modular flow reproduces a given vector field.

Interface conformal anomalies

We consider two d ≥ 2 conformal field theories (CFTs) glued together along a codimension one conformal interface. The conformal anomaly of such a system contains both bulk and interface contributions. In a curved-space setup, we compute the heat kernel coefficients and interface central charges in free theories. The results are consistent with the known boundary CFT data via the folding trick. In d = 4, two interface invariants generally allowed as anomalies turn out to have vanishing interface charges. These missing invariants are constructed from components with odd parity with respect to flipping the orientation of the defect. We conjecture that all invariants constructed from components with odd parity may have vanishing coefficient for symmetric interfaces, even in the case of interacting interface CFT.

Locality and analyticity of the crossing symmetric dispersion relation

This paper discusses the locality and analyticity of the crossing symmetric dispersion relation (CSDR). Imposing locality constraints on the CSDR gives rise to a local and fully crossing symmetric expansion of scattering amplitudes, dubbed as Feynman block expansion. A general formula is provided for the contact terms that emerge from the expansion. The analyticity domain of the expansion is also derived analogously to the Lehmann-Martin ellipse. Our observation of type-II super-string tree amplitude suggests that the Feynman block expansion has a bigger analyticity domain and better convergence.

Field redefinitions can be nonlocal

We revisit the lore establishing the allowed space of field redefinitions and show that there are essentially no restrictions. Our conclusions hold to all orders in perturbation theory and for any dispersion relation. Field redefinitions can be nonlocal, symmetry breaking, or in certain cases have explicit dependence on spacetime. We address field redefinitions that can be resummed into the propagator, which demonstrates how to perform perturbative calculations away from the minimum in field space. Field redefinitions are used to derive higher-order Schwinger-Dyson equations, which imply multiparticle soft theorems. Non-standard field redefinitions are showcased using both relativistic and nonrelativistic examples.

Landau diagrams in AdS and S-matrices from conformal correlators

Quantum field theories in AdS generate conformal correlation functions on the boundary, and in the limit where AdS is nearly flat one should be able to extract an S-matrix from such correlators. We discuss a particularly simple position-space procedure to do so. It features a direct map from boundary positions to (on-shell) momenta and thereby relates cross ratios to Mandelstam invariants. This recipe succeeds in several examples, includes the momentum-conserving delta functions, and can be shown to imply the two proposals in based on Mellin space and on the OPE data. Interestingly the procedure does not always work: the Landau singularities of a Feynman diagram are shown to be part of larger regions, to be called ‘bad regions’, where the flat-space limit of the Witten diagram diverges. To capture these divergences we introduce the notion of Landau diagrams in AdS. As in flat space, these describe on-shell particles propagating over large distances in a complexified space, with a form of momentum conservation holding at each bulk vertex. As an application we recover the anomalous threshold of the four-point triangle diagram at the boundary of a bad region.

Model-dependence of minimal-twist OPEs in d > 2 holographic CFTs

Following recent work on heavy-light correlators in higher-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) with a large central charge C T , we clarify the properties of stress tensor composite primary operators of minimal twist, [ T m ], using arguments in both CFT and gravity. We provide an efficient proof that the three-point coupling $\left\langle {\mathcal{O}}_L{\mathcal{O}}_L\left[{T}^m\right]\right\rangle$, where ${\mathcal{O}}_L$ is any light primary operator, is independent of the purely gravitational action. Next, we consider corrections to this coupling due to additional interactions in AdS effective field theory and the corresponding dual CFT. When the CFT contains a non-zero three-point coupling $\left\langle TT{\mathcal{O}}_L\right\rangle$, the three-point coupling $\left\langle {\mathcal{O}}_L{\mathcal{O}}_L\left[{T}^2\right]\right\rangle$ is modified at large C T if $\left\langle TT{\mathcal{O}}_L\right\rangle \sim \sqrt{C_T}$. This scaling is obeyed by the dilaton, by Kaluza-Klein modes of prototypical supergravity compactifications, and by scalars in stress tensor multiplets of supersymmetric CFTs. Quartic derivative interactions involving the graviton and the light probe field dual to ${\mathcal{O}}_L $ can also modify the minimal-twist couplings; these local interactions may be generated by integrating out a spin- ℓ ≥ 2 bulk field at tree level, or any spin ℓ at loop level. These results show how the minimal-twist OPE coefficients can depend on the higher-spin gap scale, even perturbatively.

Giant Wilson loops and AdS 2 /dCFT 1

The 1/2-BPS Wilson loop in N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is an important and well-studied example of conformal defect. In particular, much work has been done for the correlation functions of operator insertions on the Wilson loop in the fundamental representation. In this paper, we extend such analyses to Wilson loops in the large-rank symmetric and antisymmetric representations, which correspond to probe D3 and D5 branes with AdS 2 × S 2 and AdS 2 × S 4 worldvolume geometries, ending at the AdS 5 boundary along a one-dimensional contour. We first compute the correlation functions of protected scalar insertions from supersymmetric localization, and obtain a representation in terms of multiple integrals that are similar to the eigenvalue integrals of the random matrix, but with important differences. Using ideas from the Fermi Gas formalism and the Clustering method, we evaluate their large N limit exactly as a function of the ’t Hooft coupling. The results are given by simple integrals of polynomials that resemble the Q-functions of the Quantum Spectral Curve, with integration measures depending on the number of insertions. Next, we study the correlation functions of fluctuations on the probe D3 and D5 branes in AdS. We compute a selection of three- and four-point functions from perturbation theory on the D-branes, and show that they agree with the results of localization when restricted to supersymmetric kinematics. We also explain how the difference of the internal geometries of the D3 and D5 branes manifests itself in the localization computation.

blocks_3d: software for general 3d conformal blocks

We introduce the software blocks_3d for computing four-point conformal blocks of operators with arbitrary Lorentz representations in 3d CFTs. It uses Zamolodchikov-like recursion relations to numerically compute derivatives of blocks around a crossing-symmetric configuration. It is implemented as a heavily optimized, multi-threaded, C++ application. We give performance benchmarks for correlators containing scalars, fermions, and stress tensors. As an example application, we recompute bootstrap bounds on four-point functions of fermions and study whether a previously observed sharp jump can be explained using the “fake primary” effect. We conclude that the fake primary effect cannot fully explain the jump and the possible existence of a “dead-end” CFT near the jump merits further study.

Small instantons in weakly-gauged holographic models

Small instantons can play an important role in Yang-Mills theories whose gauge couplings are sizeable at small distances. An interesting class of theories where this could occur is in weakly-gauged holographic models (dual to Yang-Mills theories interacting with strongly-coupled CFTs), since gauge couplings are indeed enhanced towards the UV boundary of the 5D AdS space. However, contrary to expectations, we show that small instantons in these non-asymptotically-free models are highly suppressed and ineffective. This is due to the conservation of topological charge that forbids instantons to be localized near the UV boundary. Despite this fact we find non-trivial UV localized instanton-anti-instanton solutions of the Yang-Mills equations where the topological charges annihilate in the AdS bulk. These analytic solutions arise from a 5D conformal transformation of the uplifted 4D instanton. Our analysis therefore reveals unexpected nonperturbative configurations of Yang-Mills theories when they interact with strongly-coupled CFTs.

Twisted circle compactifications of 6 d SCFTs

We study 6d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) compactified on a circle with arbitrary twists. The theories obtained after compactification, often referred to as 5d Kaluza-Klein (KK) theories, can be viewed as starting points for RG flows to 5d SCFTs. According to a conjecture, all 5d SCFTs can be obtained in this fashion. We compute the Coulomb branch prepotential for all 5d KK theories obtainable in this manner and associate to these theories a smooth local genus one fibered Calabi-Yau threefold in which is encoded information about all possible RG flows to 5d SCFTs. These Calabi-Yau threefolds provide hitherto unknown M-theory duals of F-theory configurations compactified on a circle with twists. For certain exceptional KK theories that do not admit a standard geometric description we propose an algebraic description that appears to retain the properties of the local Calabi-Yau threefolds necessary to determine RG flows to 5d SCFTs, along with other relevant physical data.

Positivity and geometric function theory constraints on pion scattering

This paper presents the fascinating correspondence between the geometric function theory and the scattering amplitudes with O(N) global symmetry. A crucial ingredient to show such correspondence is a fully crossing symmetric dispersion relation in the z-variable, rather than the fixed channel dispersion relation. We have written down fully crossing symmetric dispersion relation for O(N) model in z-variable for three independent combinations of isospin amplitudes. We have presented three independent sum rules or locality constraints for the O(N) model arising from the fully crossing symmetric dispersion relations. We have derived three sets of positivity conditions. We have obtained two-sided bounds on Taylor coefficients of physical Pion amplitudes around the crossing symmetric point (for example, π + π – → π 0 π 0 ) applying the positivity conditions and the Bieberbach-Rogosinski inequalities from geometric function theory.

Difference equations and integral families for Witten diagrams

We show that tree-level and one-loop Mellin space correlators in anti-de Sitter space obey certain difference equations, which are the direct analog to the differential equations for Feynman loop integrals in the flat space. Finite-difference relations, which we refer to as “summation-by-parts relations”, in parallel with the integration-by-parts relations for Feynman loop integrals, are derived to reduce the integrals to a basis. We illustrate the general methodology by explicitly deriving the difference equations and summation-by-parts relations for various tree-level and one-loop Witten diagrams up to the four-point bubble level.

Higher-rank tensor field theory of non-abelian fracton and embeddon

We formulate a new class of tensor gauge field theories in any dimension that is a hybrid class between symmetric higher-rank tensor gauge theory (i.e., higher-spin gauge theory) and anti-symmetric tensor topological field theory. Our theory describes a mixed unitary phase interplaying between gapless and gapped topological order phases (which can live with or without Euclidean, Poincaré, or anisotropic symmetry, at least in ultraviolet high or intermediate energy field theory, but not yet to a lattice cutoff scale). The “gauge structure” can be compact, continuous, abelian or non-abelian. Our theory sits outside the paradigm of Maxwell electromagnetic theory in 1865 and Yang–Mills isospin/color theory in 1954. We discuss its local gauge transformation in terms of the ungauged vector-like or tensor-like higher-moment global symmetry. The non-abelian gauge structure is caused by gauging the non-commutative symmetries: a higher-moment symmetry and a charge conjugation (particle–hole) symmetry. Vector global symmetries along time direction may exhibit time crystals. We explore the relation of these long-range entangled matters to a non-abelian generalization of Fracton order in condensed matter, a field theory formulation of foliation, the spacetime embedding and Embeddon that we newly introduce, and possible fundamental physics applications to dark matter or dark energy.

The dual of non-extremal area: differential entropy in higher dimensions

The Ryu-Takayanagi formula relates entanglement entropy in a field theory to the area of extremal surfaces anchored to the boundary of a dual AdS space. It is interesting to ask if there is also an information theoretic interpretation of the areas of non-extremal surfaces that are not necessarily boundary-anchored. In general, the physics outside such surfaces is associated to observers restricted to a time-strip in the dual boundary field theory. When the latter is two-dimensional, it is known that the differential entropy associated to the strip computes the length of the dual bulk curve, and has an interpretation in terms of the information cost in Bell pairs of restoring correlations inaccessible to observers in the strip. A general realization of this formalism in higher dimensions is unknown. We first prove a no-go theorem eliminating candidate expressions for higher dimensional differential entropy based on entropic c-theorems. Then we propose a new formula in terms of an integral of shape derivatives of the entanglement entropy of ball shaped regions. Our proposal stems from the physical requirement that differential entropy must be locally finite and conformally invariant. Demanding cancelation of the well-known UV divergences of entanglement entropy in field theory guides us to our conjecture, which we test for surfaces in AdS 4 . Our results suggest a candidate c-function for field theories in arbitrary dimensions.

Search for new physics using effective field theory in 13 TeV pp collision events that contain a top quark pair and a boosted Z or Higgs boson

A data sample containing top quark pairs ($\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$) produced in association with a Lorentz-boosted Z or Higgs boson is used to search for signs of new physics using effective field theory. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions produced at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC and collected by the CMS experiment. Selected events contain a single lepton and hadronic jets, including two identified with the decay of bottom quarks, plus an additional large-radius jet with high transverse momentum identified as a Z or Higgs boson decaying to a bottom quark pair. Machine learning techniques are employed to discriminate between $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$Z or $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$H events and events from background processes, which are dominated by $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ + jets production. No indications of new physics are observed. The signal strengths of boosted $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$Z and $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$H production are measured, and upper limits are placed on the $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$Z and $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$H differential cross sections as functions of the Z or Higgs boson transverse momentum. The effects of new physics are probed using a framework in which the standard model is considered to be the low-energy effective field theory of a higher energy scale theory. Eight possible dimension-six operators are added to the standard model Lagrangian and their corresponding coefficients are constrained via fits to the data.

Higgs coupling measurements and the scale of new physics

A primary goal of present and future colliders is measuring the Higgs couplings to Standard Model (SM) particles. Any observed deviation from the SM predictions for these couplings is a sign of new physics whose energy scale can be bounded from above by requiring tree-level unitarity. In this paper, we extend previous work on unitarity bounds from the Higgs cubic coupling to Higgs couplings to vector bosons and top quarks. We find that HL-LHC measurements of these couplings compatible with current experimental bounds may point to a scale that can be explored at the HL-LHC or a next-generation collider. Our approach is completely model-independent: we assume only that there are no light degrees of freedom below the scale of new physics, and allow arbitrary values for the infinitely many couplings beyond the SM as long as they are in agreement with current measurements. We also extend and clarify the methodology of this analysis, and show that if the scale of new physics is above the TeV scale, then the deviations can be described by the leading higher-dimension gauge invariant operator, as in the SM effective field theory.
