Preferred Void Orientation in Uniaxially Pressed PBX 9502

Ultra- and small-angle neutron scattering techniques were used to study the morphology of voids in directions parallel and perpendicular to the compaction plane of a uniaxially pressed cylinder of PBX 9502. Two-dimensional scattering patterns from samples cut parallel to the compaction plane had circular equal-intensity contours, implying that along this view the voids are circular or randomly oriented. Identical measurements of samples cut perpendicular to the compaction plane produced elliptical equal-intensity contours, indicating preferred orientation of voids. Analysis of the two dimensional scattering patterns confirmed that the voids are non-spherical with an average aspect ratio of 1.20, flattened so that the larger dimensions of the voids lie within the compaction plane. Model analysis of the combined ultra- and small-angle neutron scattering curves revealed that the PBX 9502 porosity is interconnected, in the form of aggregates comprised of non-spherical, primary voids. The volume dimension was found to be the same in both directions, indicating that the aggregate is randomly oriented throughout the sample, and that it is the primary voids that are preferentially oriented. Furthermore, void interfaces with the surrounding matrix were found to be rough or polydisperse, with a common roughness dimension or polydispersity in all directions.

Entanglement phases in large- N hybrid Brownian circuits with long-range couplings

Here, we develop solvable models of large-N hybrid quantum circuits on qubits and fermions with tunable long-range power-law interactions and continuous local monitoring. These models provide analytical access to the entanglement phase diagram and error-correcting properties of many-body entangled nonequilibrium states generated by such dynamics. In one dimension, the long-range couplings are irrelevant for α > 3/2, where α is the power-law exponent, and the models exhibit a conventional measurement-induced phase transition between volume- and area-law entangled phases. For 1/2 < α < 3/2, the long-range couplings become relevant, leading to a nontrivial dynamical exponent at the measurement-induced phase transition. More interestingly, for α < 1, the entanglement pattern receives a subvolume correction for both area-law and volume-law phases, indicating that the phase realizes a quantum error correcting code whose code distance scales as L 2–2α . While the entanglement phase diagram is the same for both the interacting qubit and fermionic hybrid Brownian circuits, we find that long-range free-fermionic circuits exhibit a distinct phase diagram with two different fractal entangled phases.

Single molecule characterization of anomalous transport in a thin, anisotropic film

Here, the diffusion of small, charged molecules incorporated in an anisotropic polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) was tracked in three dimensions by combining single-molecule fluorescence localization (to characterize lateral diffusion) with Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between diffusing molecules and the supporting surface (to measure diffusion in the surface-normal direction). Analysis of the surface-normal diffusion required model-based statistical analysis to account for the inherently noisy FRET signal. Combining these distinct single-molecule methods, which are inherently sensitive to different length scales, permitted simultaneous characterization of severely anisotropic diffusion, which was more than three orders of magnitude slower in the surface-normal direction. We hypothesize that the anomalously slow surface-normal diffusion was related to the periodic distribution of charge in the PEM, which created electrostatic barriers. The motion was strongly subdiffusive, with anomalous temporal scaling exponents in lateral and normal directions, suggesting a connection to the transient, random fractal conformation of polymer chains in the film’s matrix.
