Emissivity of Frozen Regions Retrieved from Aquarius Measurements

The land emissivity model used in the Aquarius data processing has been updated for the latest data release (V5.0). In order to improve the estimates of the brightness temperatures of frozen regions, the new model uses values of surface emissivity that have been estimated from the Aquarius measurements averaged over the entire duration of the mission. The retrieved emissivities depend on the geographic location, but they depend only marginally on time, temperature and snow cover.

Microbiomes of frozen blood plasma samples reveal potential pathogens in wild birds and rodents

The lack of genomic data on pathogens from wildlife severely limits our ability to track transmission patterns and trace the origins of an outbreak. There are currently millions of wildlife samples in biobanks around the world, including blood samples. Blood has traditionally been viewed as a sterile environment in healthy individuals, but recent evidence suggests that this is not the case, especially for wild animals. Our goal was to determine whether frozen plasma samples can be surveyed using 16S sequencing to provide information about potential hosts for pathogens for a more complete understanding of disease systems. We sequenced blood plasma from wild North American deer mice ( Peromyscus maniculatus ) and American kestrels ( Falco sparverius ) that were cryogenically stored for 7 and 13 years, respectively, and compared two DNA extraction kits. The kestrel samples contained a very high number of reads that could not be identified to phylum compared to the mouse samples. The two kits differed in the phyla and genera that were detected, and the Zymo kit, which is optimized for plasma and serum, produced more high-quality reads for both kestrel and mouse samples. We identified several pathogenic genera, including Mycoplasma, Escherichia-Shigella , and Bartonella . Sequencing blood samples for pathogens could potentially have broad applications for identifying important reservoir hosts for pathogen transmission and provide a reduced set of species on which to follow up.

Elemental analysis of air-sensitive frozen molten salt samples using an inert transfer chamber for LIBS/LA-ICP-TOF-MS analysis

A novel inert sample transfer system was developed and employed to enable, for the first time, the analysis of air-sensitive salt samples in a two-volume ablation cell using simultaneous laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and laser ablation (LA)-inductively coupled plasma (ICP)-time-of-flight (TOF)-mass spectrometry (MS) analysis. Molten salts are of growing interest as a medium for advanced nuclear reactors and nuclear fuel reprocessing technologies continue to be developed around their use. However, compositional analysis of molten salt samples can be challenging because of their air-sensitive nature and varying solubilities leading to inaccurate measurements when digested. LA-based analysis provides an alternate method to digestion and can provide rapid elemental information with little sample preparation. In this study, LIBS and LA-ICP-TOF-MS were used to analyze the Ce content in frozen salt samples taken from a series of electrochemical experiments. Calibrations were built for each technique, and the resulting limits of detection for Ce were estimated to be 107 and 58 µg g −1 for LIBS and LA-ICP-TOF-MS, respectively. Test samples from the electrochemical experiments were analyzed using these calibrations. The results matched bulk digestion-based ICP-optical emission spectroscopy values, and daily trends in Ce concentration changes were identified. Additionally, the LIBS and LA-ICP-TOF-MS analysis was demonstrated for identifying microgram per gram levels of components and detecting trace contaminants. The impurities detected by LIBS included Al, Mg, Ca, and Na. The impurities detected by LA-ICP-TOF-MS included W, Ag, Al, Fe, Ni, Mo, Nd, Sm, Th, and U.

Robust nonlinear isolators based on frozen mode exceptional point degeneracies

We introduce a class of imperfection-protected nonlinear isolators designed to operate at exceptional point degeneracies (EPDs) of the Bloch modes of periodic photonic structures. These Bloch EPDs are responsible for slow light and the emergence of a scattering frozen mode regime (FMR). When a weak spectral asymmetry is introduced, the group velocity in their proximity varies sharply, boosting the directional nature of the nonlinear interactions and leading to extreme isolation.
