Functional enzyme–polymer complexes

Significance The use of biological enzyme catalysts could have huge ramifications for chemical industries. However, these enzymes are often inactive in nonbiological conditions, such as high temperatures, present in industrial settings. Here, we show that the enzyme PETase (polyethylene terephthalate [PET]), with potential application in plastic recycling, is stabilized at elevated temperature through complexation with random copolymers. We demonstrate this through simulations and experiments on different types of substrates. Our simulations also provide strategies for designing more enzymatically active complexes by altering polymer composition and enzyme charge distribution.

The Role of Functionalized Conducting Polymer Binders in Improving Power Density and Cycle Life of Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Lithium-Sulfur batteries are promising as the next-generation of low-cost, high-energy rechargeable batteries. However, the commercialization of this battery has been limited by poor rate capability and cycle life. To improve the performance of Li-S cells, we have investigated the role of two n-dopable conducting polymers, N2200 and N2200-OE, as binders for the sulfur cathode. The electron and ion transport properties of these polymer binders, along with their strong affinity for polysulfides, results in significantly enhanced performance compared to cells with the traditional insulating PVDF binder. The role of these conducting polymer binders in enhancing the performance of the cells is analyzed using impedance spectroscopy, shuttle current measurements, conductivity measurements, UV–vis spectroscopy, GIWAXS studies and post-cycling analysis of the anodes. The conducting polymer binders reduce the cell impedance by a factor of four leading to a marked improvement in rate capability. The shuttling of the polysulfides and the formation of insoluble sulfides at the anode is curtailed by the interaction of the polysulfides with the backbone of the polymer binders, leading to an impressive capacity retention of 82% after 500 cycles. These studies demonstrate the benefit of tailored polymer binders at the sulfur electrode in addressing the limitations of lithium-sulfur batteries.

Coupling and Decoupling between Stickers and Backbones in Associating Polymers with Terminally Functionalized Side Chains

Associating polymers have recently attracted tremendous attention as self-healing polymers due to the dynamic reversibility of sticker association–dissociation processes. These sticker dynamics inevitably slow significantly as segmental dynamics decelerate below the glass transition temperature that limits the operational temperatures of associating polymers. Using broadband dielectric spectroscopy on a new set of associating polymers composed side chains of various lengths and terminal carboxylic-acid sticker functionality, we discovered an unexpected decoupling near the glass transition (T g ) between the slower backbone and fast sticker motions. These two motions have distinct activation energies for the motion of the sulfur linkage adjacent to the backbone (~22 to 26 kJ/mol) and the carboxylic acid groups (~5 to 8 kJ/mol). A second decoupling appears in the polymer with the longest side chain length at T g – 20 K, reflecting the dynamics of various carboxylic acid binding configurations. Furthermore, our findings open the door to design associating polymers with the capability of sticker association/dissociation at low temperatures.

Versatile Synthetic Platform for Polymer Membrane Libraries Using Functional Networks

Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) diacrylate copolymer networks containing pentafluorophenyl active esters can be quantitatively substituted with a wide variety of primary amines, enabling the development of a versatile synthetic platform for the preparation of polymer hydrogel and membrane libraries. Here, by tuning the starting network, a high degree of control over cross-linking density, water uptake, and functional group incorporation can be reproducibly achieved, which is vital for elucidating structure–property relationships in ion transporting membranes. From the same cross-linked scaffold, a diversity of basic, acidic, and solute-chelating moieties were obtained through functionalization, which allows for tailored uptake of basic and acidic organic dyes and metal chloride salts. Ion permeation and sorption measurements for a series of polymer networks with controlled cross-linking density and varied imidazole grafting densities illustrate the ability of this platform to isolate the effect of chemical functionality on ion transport from the effects of cross-linking density and water content.

In Situ Growth of Crystalline and Polymer-Incorporated Amorphous ZIFs in Polybenzimidazole Achieving Hierarchical Nanostructures for Carbon Capture

We report mixed matrix materials (MMMs) hold great potential for membrane gas separations by merging nanofillers with unique nanostructures and polymers with excellent processability. In situ growth of the nanofillers is adapted to mitigate interfacial incompatibility to avoid the selectivity loss. Surprisingly, functional polymers have not been exploited to co-grow the nanofillers for membrane applications. Herein, in situ synergistic growth of crystalline zeolite imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) in polybenzimidazole (PBI), creating highly porous structures with high gas permeability, is demonstrated. More importantly, PBI contains benzimidazole groups (similar to the precursor for ZIF-8, i.e., 2-methylimidazole) and induces the formation of amorphous ZIFs, enhancing interfacial compatibility and creating highly size-discriminating bottlenecks. For instance, the formation of 15 mass% ZIF-8 in PBI improves H- 2 permeability and H- 2 /CO 2 selectivity by approximate to 100% at 35 degrees C, breaking the permeability/selectivity tradeoff. This work unveils a new platform of MMMs comprising functional polymer-incorporated amorphous ZIFs with hierarchical nanostructures for various applications.

Autonomous Synthesis and Inverse Design of Electrochromic Polymers with High Efficiency and Accuracy

Here, the design and synthesis of functional polymers, aimed at targeted properties through specific structures, have long been challenged by their complex and often nonlinear structure–property relationships. Key processes, including knowledge accumulation for predictive design and experimental refinement and validation, are traditionally labor-insensitive and time-consuming, making it difficult to balance accuracy and efficiency. Here, we introduce an accelerated, autonomous system for the on-demand synthesis of electronic polymers that achieves the desired electrochromic functionality with high accuracy and efficiency. Our approach leverages large language model-assisted data mining, a physics-informed copolymer machine learning model, and an AI-driven autonomous robotic workflow in the Polybot lab. Within 72 h, Polybot autonomously synthesized electrochromic polymers (ECPs) with targeted, previously-unreported color values, including green polymers with specific absorption profiles, precisely fine-tuning copolymer structures with a 5% step size in comonomer composition within a three-monomer system. A publicly accessible ECP informatics database has also been created to foster knowledge exchange.

Dopamine-Mediated Polymer Coating Facilitates Area-Selective Atomic Layer Deposition

Area-selective atomic layer deposition (ALD) has the potential to significantly improve current fabrication approaches by introducing a bottom-up process in which robust and conformal thin films are selectively deposited onto patterned substrates. This bottom-up approach requires selective areas of the substrates to be masked to inhibit deposition. Spontaneous self-assembly and organization of a mask, incorporating adhesion and other functions, are particularly attractive for this role as they do not require a separate patterning step. In this work, we make use of the pH/light tunability of catechol adhesion to develop a catechol-functionalized polymer that exhibits tunable adhesion strengths on different materials based on their specific chemistry. Tunable selective deposition was shown between metal/metal oxide substrates by controlling the local pH. Moreover, by controlling the adhesion strength through UV light, the deposition of hafnium oxide (HfO 2 ) during ALD was successfully inhibited.

Interphase Engineering Enabled by Using a Separator with Electrochemically Active Carbazole Polymers for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Separators are generally considered inert components in lithium-ion batteries. In the past, some electroactive polymers have been successfully applied in separator modifications for overcharge protection or as acid scavengers. This study highlights the first use of two “electroactive” carbazole polymers (copolymer 9-phenyl-9H-carbazole-phenyl [PCP] and poly(9-vinylcarbazole) [PVC]), which were each applied separately as coatings on the cathode-facing side of commercial Celgard 2325 separators, respectively, to enhance the cycling performance of 0.3Li 2 MnO 3 ·0.7LiMn 0.5 Ni 0.5 O 2 //graphite (LMR-NM//Gr) full cells through interphase engineering. The team observed an irreversible polymer oxidation process of the carbazole-functionalized polymers—occurring only during the first charge—for the modified separator cells, and the results were confirmed by dQ/dV analysis, cyclic voltammetry measurements, and nuclear magnetic resonance characterizations. During this oxidation, carbazole polymers participate in the process of interphase formation, contributing to the improved cycling performance of LMR-NM//Gr batteries. Particularly, oxidation takes place at voltages of ~4.0 and ~3.5 V when PCP and PVC are used as separator coatings, which is highly irreversible. Further postmortem examinations suggest that the improvements using these modified separators arise from the formation of higher-quality and more inorganic SEI, as well as the beneficial CEI enriched in LixPOyFz. These interphases effectively inhibit the crosstalk effect by reducing TM dissolution.

Aqueous Polymer Modification of Cellulose Nanofibrils by Grafting‐Through a Reactive Methacrylate Group

Abstract Modifying the surface of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) produced by mechanical refinement with a variety of polymer functional groups in an entirely water‐based system is challenging because only surface hydroxyl groups are accessible. To address this limitation, an entirely water‐based, polymer modification scheme is developed. CNFs are functionalized with a reactive methacrylate functional group followed by subsequent grafting‐through polymerization. This modification worked with a variety of water‐soluble and water‐insoluble (meth)acrylates and (meth)acrylamides, grafting up to 45 wt% polymer on to the CNFs. The reaction conditions introducing the methacrylate functional group are adjusted to vary the degree of functionality. Soxhlet extraction of modified samples demonstrates that the reactive methacrylate group is necessary to facilitate polymer grafting. The degree of functionalization of the polymers is studied via quantitative transmission IR spectroscopy and the morphology of the resulting cellulose nanofibrils is studied via a combination of optical, scanning electron, and atomic force microscopy. High levels of polymer modification do not significantly affect the micrometer‐scale fibril morphology.

Creation of discrete active site domains via mesoporous silica poly(styrene) composite materials for incompatible acid–base cascade reactions

This work highlights the design and synthesis of bifunctional mesoporous silicate – polymer composite dual acid–base supported cascade catalysts. Compartmentalization of the two incompatible active sites is sought by segregating acid sites on the silica surface, and base sites within polymer chains and/or polymer domains. The ability to isolate and segregate active sites via control of the mesoporous silica pore size and polymer molecular weight is probed with silica samples functionalized by a grafting-to process. Supplemental activator and reducing agent (SARA) atom transfer radical polymerization is used to synthesize random copolymers containing protected primary amines. Thiol–ene ‘click’ chemistry facilitates silica functionalization via a convergent approach, with the ene-functionalized polymer end group and silica-grafted thiols forming SBA/MCM-SH-poly(styrene-co-2-(4-vinylbenzyl)isoindoline-1,3-dione). Polymer deprotection and thiol oxidation produces primary amine/sulfonic acid containing composite catalysts. With the polymer supported Lewis base and silica grafted Brønsted acid, the two-step deacetalization – Knoevenagel condensation cascade is explored to assess the ability of these polymer/silica hybrids to segregate active sites, allowing both acid and base site accessibility. Six composite catalysts are synthesized and tested in individual and cascade reactions with kinetic results demonstrating that lower molecular weight SBA-15-P1 and MCM-41-P1 catalysts outperform (higher turnover frequencies and initial rates) their higher molecular weight analogues, as well as a polymer-free system containing molecular active sites dispersed on the silica surface. Higher molecular weight composite catalysts perform more poorly due to limited chain solubility, mass transfer limitations, and poor catalyst accessibility. In many cases, the polymer chains effectively thread into the mesopores, with higher molecular weight polymers leading to pore blockage and inhibited mass transfer.

Polycaprolactone: A Promising Addition to the Sequential Infiltration Synthesis Polymer Family Identified through In Situ Infrared Spectroscopy

Infiltration of inorganic oxides inside polymers using sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) is an effective method for creating materials for a broad range of applications. The reactions between various polymer functional groups and organometallic/inorganic precursors are unique, which makes it essential to understand the specific interactions for a range of precursors and polymers to enable predictive process design and to extend the utility of SIS to applications. In this paper, in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) measurements have been performed during Al 2 O 3 and TiO 2 SIS in three different homopolymers: poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL), and poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP). From the FTIR intensity changes after precursor exposure and during the subsequent purge times, it is demonstrated quantitatively that the interaction dynamics and the stability of the intermediate complexes of these polymers with the metal precursors are substantially different. A key finding from this comparative study is that PCL interacts far more strongly with metal precursors, even though its carbonyl (C=O) and ester (C-O-R) functional groups are similar to those of the more weakly interacting PMMA. This behavior suggests that additional factors beyond the identity of the functional groups dictate how polymers interact with metal compounds in SIS. PCL, which has not previously been reported in SIS processes, may be an attractive polymeric template for implementing SIS with improved uniformity and cost-effectiveness.

Accelerated Aging of a Polymer-Supported Molecular Amine Direct Air Capture Sorbent: Experiments and Theory

Amine-functionalized polymer sorbents are the preferred materials for CO2 extraction from air (DAC) due to their “high” CO2 adsorption capacity and selectivity at ultra-dilute conditions. The lifetime of adsorbents is a key property of equal importance as adsorption capacity, selectivity and kinetics with direct impact on the economics of commercial-scale operations. Therefore, a detailed investigation into the contributing factors (e.g. temperature, humidity) as well as the mechanism of amine degradation is vital for the development of amines with long-term stability. Herein, in situ attenuated total reflection (ATR) Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is used to monitor the real time changes to amine-based sorbents under systematically varied conditions. In addition, IR spectra obtained from density functional theory molecular dynamics are used to obtain mechanistic insights pertaining to the degradation of amine groups in DAC sorbents.
