Bonding in zerovalent Ni compounds - NiN2 and Ni(N2)4 compared with NiCO and Ni(CO)4

Calculations are carried out on NiN2, which may be considered a prototypical metal surface-ligand system. A large Gaussian basis set and an MCPF treatment of electron correlation are used. Consideration is also given to the 2Sigma(+) states of NiN2(-), NiCO(-), and NiN2(+), the low-lying 2Delta and 2Pi states of NiN2(+), and the 1A1 states of Ni(CO)4 and Ni(N2)4.

Lowest ionization potentials of Al2

Potential curves for the lowest two electronic states, X 2Sigma(+)g and A 2Pi(u), of Al2(+) were computed using complete active space SCF/multireference CI wave functions and large Gaussian basis sets. The lowest observable vertical ionization potential, to Al2(+) X 2Sigma(+)g, of the Al2 X 3 Pi(u) ground state is calculated to occur around 6.1 eV, in excellent agreement with the experimental range of 6.0 to 6.42 eV obtained in recent cluster ionization studies by Cox and co-workers. The second vertical ionization potential, to Al2(+) A 2Pi(u), occurs near 6.4 eV, also within the experimental range. The adiabatic IP of 5.90 eV is in good agreement with the value of 5.8 to 6.1 eV deduced by Hanley and co-workers from the difference in thresholds between collision induced dissociation processes of Al3(+). The computed IP values are somewhat larger than those deduced from branching ratios in cluster fragmentation experiments by Jarrold and co-workers. The observation of an ionization threshold below 6.42 eV is shown to be incompatible with an Al2 ground electronic state assignment of 3Sigma(-)g, but the separation between the two lowest states of Al2 is so small that it is likely that both are populated in the experiments, so that this does not provide unambiguous support for the recent theoretical assignment of the ground state as 3Pi(u).

On the electronic structure and spectrum of CuF2 and CuCl2

Results are reported from SDCI and CPF ab initio computations for the ground and low-lying states of CuF2 and CuCl2. A large Gaussian basis set with functions up to the g level is employed, and the results are presented in tables and characterized in detail. Particular attention is given to the bond distances and force constants for the ligand-field states and the bond distances for the charge-transfer states. Good agreement is obtained between the CPF and SDCI values and with published experimental data.

The polarizabilities of neon

The static dipole polarizability, second hyperpolarizability, quadrupole polarizability and dipole-dipole-quadrupole hyperpolarizability for the Ne atom are computed, using large Gaussian basis sets and coupled cluster wavefunctions. Correlation effects are substantial, ranging from 15 percent for the dipole polarizability to 40 percent for the second hyperpolarizability. It is confirmed by explicit calculation earlier hypotheses that g-type and higher angular momentum functions and core correlation effects make almost no contribution to these properties in Ne. Triple excitations, on the other hand, are very important, accounting for as much as 25 percent of the correlation contribution to the second hyperpolarizability. The best estimate of the second hyperpolarizability is 119 + or - 4 au, in good agreement with the recent calculations of Maroulis and Thakkar (1989) and the latest experimental result of Shelton (1989).

On the dissociation energy of Mg2

The bonding in the X 1Sigma(+)g state of Mg2 is investigated using near-complete valence one-particle Slater and Gaussian basis sets containing up to h functions. It is shown that the four-electron complete CI limit can be approached using a sequence of either second-order CI (SOCI) or interacting correlated fragment (ICF) calculations. At the valence level, the best estimate of the dissociation energy D(e) was 464/cm. This is a lower limit and is probably within 5/cm of the complete basis value.

Theoretical study of the A 3Sigma(-)-X 3Pi transition in SiC

A theoretical study of the A 3Sigma(-)-X 3Pi infrared transition in SiC is presented using atomic natural orbital Gaussian basis sets in conjuction with multireference configuration interaction calculations. Dipole moment functions have been computed for both states as well as the A-X electronic transition moment function. The calculations predict that T(00) is 3700 + or - 200/cm, so that the transition recently observed in emission near 4500/cm and assigned to the 0-0 band of the A 3Sigma(-)-X 3Pi system of SiC is actually the 1-0 band.

Theoretical study of polarizabilities and hyperpolarizabilities of Ne, HF, F(-), and OH(-)

Theoretical calculations are presented for the polarizability parameters through the fourth power of an applied static electric field for Ne and HF and through the second power in the field for the negative ions F(-) and OH(-). Large Gaussian basis sets are employed and electron correlation is incorporated using the modified coupled pair functional (MCPF) method and for Ne and HF using coupled-cluster single- and double-excitation (CCSD) methods with two approaches of including the effect of triple excitations. The MCPF method is found to perform well in relation to the more rigorous CCSD method.

A potential energy surface for the process H2 + H2O yielding H + H + H2O - Ab initio calculations and analytical representation

Extensive ab initio calculations on the ground state potential energy surface of H2 + H2O were performed using a large contracted Gaussian basis set and a high level of correlation treatment. An analytical representation of the potential energy surface was then obtained which reproduces the calculated energies with an overall root-mean-square error of only 0.64 mEh. The analytic representation explicitly includes all nine internal degrees of freedom and is also well behaved as the H2 dissociates; it thus can be used to study collision-induced dissociation or recombination of H2. The strategy used to minimize the number of energy calculations is discussed, as well as other advantages of the present method for determining the analytical representation.

The photoelectron spectroscopy of ZnCl2

The ionization energies (IEs) corresponding to the Cl ligand electrons and the Zn 3d electrons in ZnCl2, computed using large Gaussian basis sets and a high level of correlation treatment, are presented. The IEs for the Cl ligand electrons are in excellent agreement with those determined from photoelectron spectra. The IEs corresponding to the Zn 3d electrons agree with experiment relatively well in absolute magnitude, but differ in order. The vibrational frequencies of the ground state agree very well with experiment, and predictions are made for the corresponding frequencies in the positive ion.

Theoretical study of the hyperfine parameters of OH

In the present study of the hyperfine parameters of O-17H as a function of the one- and n-particle spaces, all of the parameters except oxygen's spin density, b sub F(O), are sufficiently easily tractable to allow concentration on the computational requirements for accurate determination of b sub F(O). Full configuration-interaction (FCI) calculations in six Gaussian basis sets yield unambiguous results for (1) the effect of uncontracting the O s and p basis sets; (2) that of adding diffuse s and p functions; and (3) that of adding polarization functions to O. The size-extensive modified coupled-pair functional method yields b sub F values which are in fair agreement with FCI results.

Theoretical study of the spectroscopy of Al2(+)

The electronic states of Al2(+) below about 40,000/cm are studied using a CASSCF/MRCI approach in a large Gaussian basis set. The computed spectroscopic constants, excitation energies, Einstein coefficients, and radiative lifetimes should give insight into the spectroscopy of this ion.

Dissociative recombination of the ground state of N2(+)

Large-scale calculations of the dissociative recombination cross sections and rates for the v = 0 level of the N2(+) ground state are reported, and the important role played by vibrationally excited Rydberg states lying both below and above the v = 0 level of the ion is demonstrated. The large-scale electronic wave function calculations were done using triple zeta plus polarization nuclear-centered-valence Gaussian basis sets. The electronic widths were obtained using smaller wave functions, and the cross sections were calculated on the basis of the multichannel quantum defect theory. The DR rate is calculated at 1.6 x 10 to the -7th x (Te/300) to the -0.37 cu cm/sec for Te in the range of 100 to 1000 K, and is found to be in excellent agreement with prior microwave afterglow experiments but in disagreement with recent merged beam results. It is inferred that the dominant mechanism for DR imparts sufficient energy to the product atoms to allow for escape from the Martian atmosphere.

Concerted hydrogen atom exchange between three HF molecules

The termolecular reaction involving concerted hydrogen-atom exchange between three HF molecules was investigated with particular attention given to the effects of correlation at the various stationary points along the reaction. Using large segmented Gaussian basis sets to locate the (HF)3 stationary points at the SCF level, the geometries of the stable hydrogen-bonded trimer, which is of C(3h) symmetry, were located, together with the transition state for hydrogen exchange, which is of D(3h) symmetry. Then, using a large atomic natural orbital basis and correlating all valence electrons, the energetics of the exchange reaction were evaluated at the correlated level.

Theoretical study of hydrogen and nitrogen interactions - N-H transport cross sections and collision integrals

Potential energy curves have been calculated for the X 3Sigma(-) and 5Sigma(-) states of NH using a complete-active-space self-consistent-field/multireference configuration-interaction procedure and extensive Gaussian basis sets. An accurate dipole moment function is computed for the X 3Sigma(-) state. Transport cross sections have been calculated for the collisions of hydrogen and nitrogen atoms in their ground states. The mean transport cross sections are tabulated for collision energies in the range 0.0001-1 E(h); the mean collision integrals are listed for temperatures between 100 and 100,000 K. The ab initio energies for the 5 Sigma(-) state of NH are found to be consistent with the results of correlation studies and agree well with the prediction from combining relations using the energies of the highest spin states of H2 and N2.

Theoretical study of the bonding of the first- and second-row transition-metal positive ions to methylene

The geometries of the molecules formed by the interaction of the first- and second-row transition-metal cations with methylene are optimized at the modified coupled-pair functional (MCPF) level of theory using large Gaussian basis sets, and their dissociation energies are computed employing both the MCPF and internally contracted averaged coupled-pair functional (ICACPF) methods. The computed binding energies are generally in good agreement with the available experimental results, although the calculations indicate that the experimental values for ScCH2(+), TiCH2(+), and NbCH2(+) are probably too large. The nature of the bonding in each case and trends in the bonding patterns across the transition-metal rows are discussed.

Theoretical determination of the alkali-metal superoxide bond energies

The bond dissociation energies for the alkali-metal superoxides have been computed using extensive Gaussian basis sets and treating electron correlation at the modified coupled-pair functional level. Our computed D0 values are 61.4, 37.2, 40.6, and 38.4 kcal/mol for LiO2, NaO2, KO2, and RbO2, respectively. These values, which are expected to be lower bounds and accurate to 2 kcal/mol, agree well with some of the older flame data, but rule out several recent experimental measurements.

Theoretical study of the alkaline-earth metal superoxides BeO2 through SrO2

Three competing bonding mechanisms have been identified for the alkaline-earth metal superoxides: these result in a change in the optimal structure and ground state as the alkaline-earth metal becomes heavier. For example, BeO2 has a linear 3Sigma(-)g ground-state structure, whereas both CaO2 and SrO2 have C(2v)1A1 structures. For MgO2, the theoretical calculations are less definitive, as the 3A2 C(2v) structure is computed to lie only about 3 kcal/mol above the 3Sigma(-)g linear structure. The bond dissociation energies for the alkaline-earth metal superoxides have been computed using extensive Gaussian basis sets and treating electron correlation at the modified coupled-pair functional or coupled-cluster singles and doubles level with a perturbational estimate of the triple excitations.

An ab initio study of HCuCO

HCuCO is studied using a large Gaussian basis set at the coupled cluster singles and doubles level of theory, including a perturbational estimate of the connected triples (CCSD(T)). In contrast with CuCO, HCuCO is linear. The Cu-CO bond in HCuCO is significantly stronger than in CuCO. These differences between HCuCO and CuCO are discussed in terms of theCu-H bond polarizing the Cu 4s electron away from the CO.
