Search for high-mass resonances in a final state comprising a gluon and two hadronically decaying W bosons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for high-mass resonances decaying into a gluon, g, and two W bosons is presented. A Kaluza-Klein gluon, g$_{KK}$, decaying in cascade via a scalar radion R, g$_{KK}$ → gR → gWW, is considered. The final state studied consists of three large-radius jets, two of which contain the products of hadronically decaying W bosons, and the third one the hadronization products of the gluon. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC during 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$. The masses of the g$_{KK}$ and R candidates are reconstructed as trijet and dijet masses, respectively. These are used for event categorization and signal extraction. No excess of data events above the standard model background expectation is observed. Upper limits are set on the product of the g$_{KK}$ production cross section and its branching fraction via a radion R to gWW. This is the first analysis examining the resonant WW+jet signature and setting limits on the two resonance masses in an extended warped extra-dimensional model.

Gluon double-spin asymmetry in the longitudinally polarized p + p collisions

We derive the first-ever small-x expression for the inclusive gluon production cross section in the central rapidity region of the longitudinally polarized proton-proton collisions. The cross section depends on the polarizations of both protons, therefore comprising the numerator of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry ALL for the produced gluons. The cross section is calculated in the shock wave formalism and is expressed in terms of the polarized dipole scattering amplitudes on the projectile and target protons. We show that the small-x evolution corrections are included into our cross section expression if one evolves these polarized dipole amplitudes using the double-logarithmic helicity evolution derived in [1–4]. Our calculation is performed for the gluon sector only, with the quark contribution left for future work. When that work is complete, the resulting formula will be applicable to longitudinally polarized proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions, as well as to polarized semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) on a proton or a nucleus. Our results should allow one to extend the small-x helicity phenomenology analysis of [5] to the jet/hadron production data reported for the longitudinally polarized proton-proton collisions at RHIC and to polarized SIDIS measurements at central rapidities to be performed at the EIC.

Celestial gluon amplitudes from the outside in

We show that, given a two-dimensional realization of the celestial OPE in self-dual Yang-Mills, we can find a scalar source around which scattering amplitudes replicate correlation functions computed from the 2D ‘gluon’ operators in a limit where a dynamic massless scalar decouples. We derive conditions on the two-dimensional three-point correlation function so that such a source exists and give two particular examples of this construction, one in which gluons are constructed from vertex operators in the semiclassical limit of Liouville theory and another in which the soft gluons arise from generalized free fields. Finally, we identify a bulk dual to the level of the boundary Kac-Moody algebra and discuss moving beyond the decoupling limit.

First saturation correction in high energy proton-nucleus collisions. Part II. Single inclusive semi-hard gluon production

Exploiting recently obtained analytic solutions of classical Yang-Mills equations for higher order perturbations in the field of the dilute object (proton), we derive the complete first saturation correction to the single inclusive semi-hard gluon production in high energy proton-nucleus collisions by applying the Lehmann-Symanzik-Zimmermann reduction formula. We thus finalize the program started by Balitsky (see ref. [1]) and independently by Chirilli, Kovchegov and Wertepny (see ref. [2]) albeit using a very different approach to carry out our calculations. We extracted the functional dependence of gluon spectrum on the color charge densities of the colliding objects; thus our results can be used to evaluate complete first saturation correction to the double/multiple inclusive gluon productions.

Photoproduction of three jets in the CGC: gluon TMDs and dilute limit

We study the process γA → \( q\overline{q}g \) + X in the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) effective theory. After obtaining the cross section, we consider two kinematic limits which are encompassed in our result. In the so-called correlation limit, the vector sum of the transverse momenta of the three outgoing particles is small with respect to the individual transverse momenta; the cross section then simplifies considerably and can be written in a factorized form, sensitive to both the unpolarized and linearly-polarized Weizsäcker-Williams transverse momentum dependent gluon distribution function (gluon TMD). The second limit of the CGC cross section that we consider is the dilute limit, which we obtain after performing a weak-field expansion; we recover a typical linear-regime expression, involving a single unintegrated gluon distribution function. Using numerical simulations of the small-x QCD evolution of the TMDs, we investigate the rapidity dependence of the cross section in the correlation limit.

One-loop matching for gluon lattice TMDs

Transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions (TMDs) can be calculated from first principles by computing a related set of Euclidean lattice observables and connecting them via a factorization formula. This work focuses on the leading-power factorization formula connecting the lattice quasi-TMD and continuum Collins TMD for gluons. We calculate the one-loop gluon matching coefficient, which is known to be independent of spin and exhibits no mixing with quarks. We demonstrate that this coefficient satisfies Casimir scaling with respect to the quark matching coefficient at one-loop order. Our result facilitates reliable lattice QCD calculations of gluon TMDs.

Non-perturbative renormalization scheme for the C P -odd three-gluon operator

We define a regularization-independent momentum-subtraction scheme for the C P -odd three-gluon operator at dimension six. This operator appears in effective field theories for heavy physics beyond the Standard Model, describing the indirect effect of new sources of C P -violation at low energies. In a hadronic context, it induces permanent electric dipole moments. The hadronic matrix elements of the three-gluon operator are non-perturbative objects that should ideally be evaluated with lattice QCD. We define a non-perturbative renormalization scheme that can be implemented on the lattice and we compute the scheme transformation to \( \overline{\mathrm{MS}} \) at one loop. Our calculation can be used as an interface to future lattice-QCD calculations of the matrix elements of the three-gluon operator, in order to obtain theoretically robust constraints on physics beyond the Standard Model from measurements of the neutron electric dipole moment.

Hidden zeros for particle/string amplitudes and the unity of colored scalars, pions and gluons

Recent years have seen the emergence of a new understanding of scattering amplitudes in the simplest theory of colored scalar particles — the Tr(Φ 3 ) theory — based on combinatorial and geometric ideas in the kinematic space of scattering data. In this paper we report a surprise: far from the toy model it appears to be, the “stringy” Tr(Φ 3 ) amplitudes secretly contains the scattering amplitudes for pions, as well as non-supersymmetric gluons, in any number of dimensions. The amplitudes for the different theories are given by one and the same function, related by a simple shift of the kinematics. This discovery was spurred by another fundamental observation: the tree-level Tr(Φ 3 ) field theory amplitudes have a hidden pattern of zeros when a special set of non-planar Mandelstam invariants is set to zero. These zeros are not manifest in Feynman diagrams but are made obvious by the connection of these amplitudes to the new understanding of associahedra arising from “causal diamonds” in kinematic space. Furthermore, near these zeros, the amplitudes simplify, by factoring into a non-trivial product of smaller amplitudes. Remarkably the amplitudes for pions and gluons are observed to also vanish in the same kinematical locus. These properties for Tr(Φ 3 ) amplitudes hold and further generalize to the “stringy” Tr(Φ 3 ) amplitudes. The “kinematic causal diamond” picture suggests a unique shift of the kinematic data that preserves the zeros, and this shift is precisely the one that unifies colored scalars, pions, and gluons into a single object. We will focus in this paper on explaining the hidden zeros and factorization properties and the connection between all the colored theories, working for simplicity at tree level. Subsequent works will describe this new formulation for the Non-linear Sigma Model and non-supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, at all loop orders.

Measurement of boosted Higgs bosons produced via vector boson fusion or gluon fusion in the H →$ \textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}} $ decay mode using LHC proton-proton collision data at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

A measurement is performed of Higgs bosons produced with high transverse momentum (p$_{T}$) via vector boson or gluon fusion in proton-proton collisions. The result is based on a data set with a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected in 2016–2018 with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$. The decay of a high-p$_{T}$ Higgs boson to a boosted bottom quark-antiquark pair is selected using large-radius jets and employing jet substructure and heavy-flavor taggers based on machine learning techniques. Independent regions targeting the vector boson and gluon fusion mechanisms are defined based on the topology of two quark-initiated jets with large pseudorapidity separation. The signal strengths for both processes are extracted simultaneously by performing a maximum likelihood fit to data in the large-radius jet mass distribution. The observed signal strengths relative to the standard model expectation are $ {4.9}_{-1.6}^{+1.9} $ and $ {1.6}_{-1.5}^{+1.7} $ for the vector boson and gluon fusion mechanisms, respectively. A differential cross section measurement is also reported in the simplified template cross section framework.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Accessing the gluon momentum fraction of nucleons through the gradient flow

We calculate the gluon momentum fraction of the nucleon using lattice QCD, with a nonperturbative renormalization technique based on the gradient flow. The gluon momentum fraction is determined on a single Wilson-clover ensemble using 𝑁 𝑓 =2 +1 flavors with pion mass 358 MeV and lattice spacing 0.094 fm. We employ the variational method to reduce excited-state contamination and apply the distillation framework to ensure a large operator basis. To reduce systematic uncertainties, we apply Bayesian model averaging to all fit procedures. We apply matching coefficients to the flow-time dependent lattice results to recover the gluon momentum fraction in the $\overline{MS}$-scheme at 2 GeV. Our final result is ⟨𝑥⟩ 𝑔 ⁢(𝜇 =2 GeV) =0.482⁢(35), where we quote only statistical uncertainties.

Investigating the broadening phenomenon in two-particle correlations induced by gluon saturation

It has been found that the gluon density inside the proton grows rapidly at small momentum fractions. Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) predicts that this growth can be regulated by nonlinear effects, ultimately leading to gluon saturation. Within the color glass condensate framework, nonlinear QCD effects are predicted to suppress and broaden back-to-back angular correlations in collisions involving heavy nuclei. While suppression has been observed in various experiments in 𝑑/𝑝 + A collisions compared to 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions, the predicted broadening remains unobserved. This study investigates the contributions of intrinsic transverse momentum (𝑘 𝑇 ), which is associated with saturation physics, as well as parton showers and transverse motion from fragmentation (𝑝$^{frag}_{𝑇}$), which are not saturation dependent, to the width of the correlation function. Our findings show that the non-saturation dependent effects, especially the initial-state parton shower and 𝑝$^{frag}_{𝑇}$, which occur independently of the collision system, smear the back-to-back correlation more than gluon saturation does, making the broadening phenomenon difficult to observe.

Nonperturbatively renormalized nucleon gluon momentum fraction in the continuum limit of N f = 2 + 1 + 1 lattice QCD

We present the nonperturbatively renormalized nucleon gluon momentum fraction using ensembles with 2+1+1 flavors of highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ), generated by the MILC Collaboration. The calculation is done using clover fermions for the valence action with three pion masses, 220, 310, and 690 MeV, and three lattice spacings, 0.09, 0.12, and 0.15 fm. The renormalization is done using RI/MOM nonperturbative renormalization and using cluster-decomposition error reduction (CDER) to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio of the renormalization constant. We find the CDER technique is particularly important to improve the signal at the finer lattice ensembles where the lattice volume is larger. We extrapolate the gluon momentum fraction to the continuum-physical limit and obtain $\langle{x}\rangle$ g = 0.502⁢(53) stat+NPR ⁢(50) mixing in the $\overline{MS}$ scheme at 2 GeV, where first error includes the statistical error and uncertainties in nonperturbative renormalization, while the latter systematic error accounts for ignoring quark mixing. Our gluon momentum fraction is consistent with other recent lattice-QCD results at physical pion mass.

Proton’s gluon GPDs at large skewness and gravitational form factors from near threshold heavy quarkonium photoproduction

We study the exclusive near threshold photoproduction of heavy quarkonium in the framework of the generalized parton distribution (GPD) factorization, taking the 𝐽/𝜓 production as an example. Because of the threshold kinematics, the Compton-like amplitudes are related to gluon GPDs at large skewness 𝜉, distinct from the common kinematics in asymptotic high energy where the skewness is typically small. We discuss the nature of large-𝜉 expansion of these amplitudes in terms of the moments of gluon GPDs in the large-𝜉 limit. Based on that, we propose several ways to extract the first few moments of the gluon GPDs from these amplitudes, with the leading ones corresponding to the gluonic gravitational or energy-momentum tensor form factors (GFFs). We apply these methods to analyze the recent near threshold 𝐽/𝜓 production measurements by the 𝐽/𝜓 007 experiment and GlueX Collaboration and find that the 𝜉 scaling of the measured differential cross sections is consistent with the asymptotic behavior. However, the current data are not accurate enough yet for a complete determination of the gluonic GFFs, and therefore we consider some prospects for better extractions in the future.

Polarized 𝐽/𝜓 production in semi-inclusive DIS at large 𝑄 2 : Comparing quark fragmentation and photon-gluon fusion

We compare the relative importance of different mechanisms for polarized 𝐽/𝜓 production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes at large 𝑄 2 . The transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization framework and nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics are used to study the leading contributions from light quark fragmentation to polarized 𝐽/𝜓, and compared to direct production via photon-gluon fusion, which can proceed through color-singlet as well as color-octet mechanisms. We identify kinematic regimes where light quark fragmentation dominates, allowing for the extraction of the 3 𝑆$^{[8]}_{1}$ matrix element, as well as regimes where photon gluon fusion dominates, suggesting that the gluon TMD parton distribution function can be probed.

Maximally entangled gluons for any x

Individual quarks and gluons at small x inside an unpolarized hadron can be regarded as Bell states in which qubits in the spin and orbital angular momentum spaces are maximally entangled. Using the machinery of quantum information science, we generalize this observation to all values 0 < x <1 and describe gluons (but not quarks) as maximally entangled states between a qubit and a qudit. We introduce the conditional probability distribution P⁡(l z |s z ) of a gluon’s orbital angular momentum l z given its helicity s z . Restricting to the three states l z =0,±1, which constitute a qutrit, we explicitly compute P as a function of x.

Gluon Sivers function from forward exclusive χ c 1 photoproduction on unpolarized protons

Exclusive production of a χ c 1 axial vector quarkonia in photon-proton scattering at high energies requires a C -odd t -channel exchange. In the limit of vanishing momentum transfer this occurs either via the exchange of a photon, the Primakoff process, where the spin of the proton does not change. For axial-vector meson production, as a consequence of the Landau-Yang theorem, the Primakoff cross section is finite as t → 0 . Alternatively, a C -odd spin dependent Odderon can be exchanged, which involves a spin flip of the proton. The resulting cross section is related to the square of the collinear trigluon correlator or the k ⊥ -moment of the gluon Sivers function. Using two models for the gluon Sivers function from the literature we compute the ratio of Sivers to Primakoff cross sections and the angular coefficient λ θ governing the angular distribution of the χ c 1 → J / ψ + γ decay as functions of x . We point out that these observables constrain the magnitude of the gluon Sivers function at small x which could be accessed in electron-proton scattering and ultraperipheral proton-proton and nucleus-proton collisions. Polarized and unpolarized gluon PDFs: Generative machine learning applications for lattice QCD matrix elements at short distance and large momentum

Lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculations share a defining challenge by requiring a small finite range of spatial separation z between quark/gluon bilinears for controllable power corrections in the perturbative QCD factorization, and a large hadron boost p z for a successful determination of collinear parton distribution functions (PDFs). However, these two requirements make the determination of PDFs from lattice data very challenging. We present the application of generative machine learning algorithms to estimate the polarized and unpolarized gluon correlation functions utilizing short-distance data and extending the correlation up to z p z ≲ 14 , surpassing the current capabilities of lattice QCD calculations. We train physics-informed machine learning algorithms to learn from the short-distance correlation at z ≲ 0.36 fm and take the limit, p z → ∞ , thereby minimizing possible contamination from the higher-twist effects for a successful reconstruction of the polarized gluon PDF. We also expose the bias and problems with underestimating uncertainties associated with the use of model-dependent and overly constrained functional forms, such as x α ( 1 − x ) β and its variants to extract PDFs from the lattice data. We propose the use of generative machine learning algorithms to mitigate these issues and present our determination of the polarized and unpolarized gluon PDFs in the nucleon.
