Fleetite, Cu 2 RhIrSb 2 , a New Species of Platinum-Group Mineral from the Miass Placer Zone, Southern Urals, Russia

Fleetite, Cu 2 RhIrSb 2 , a new species of platinum-group mineral (PGM), was discovered intergrown with an Os–Ir–Ru alloy in the Miass Placer Zone (Au–PGE), southern Urals, Russia. A single grain 50 μm across was found. Osmium, ruthenium, and iridium are the main associated minerals; also present are Pt–Fe alloys, laurite, Sb-rich irarsite, Rh-rich tolovkite, kashinite, anduoite, ferronickelplatinum, heazlewoodite, PGE-bearing pentlandite and digenite, as well as micrometric inclusions of forsterite (Fo 93.7 ), chromite–magnesiochromite, and Mg-rich edenite. In reflected light, fleetite is light gray; it is opaque, isotropic, non-pleochroic, and non-bireflectant. We report reflectance values measured in air. A mean of seven point-analyses (wavelength-dispersive spectrometry) gave Cu 13.93, Ni 8.60, Fe 0.10, Ir 28.07, Rh 7.91, Ru 1.96, Sb 39.28, total 99.85 wt.%, corresponding to (Cu 1.41 Ni 0.58 Fe 0.01 ) Σ2.00 (Rh 0.49 Ni 0.36 Ru 0.12 ) Σ0.97 Ir 0.95 Sb 2.08 on the basis of six atoms per formula unit, taking into account the structural results. The calculated density is 10.83 g/cm 3 . Single-crystal X-ray studies show that fleetite is cubic, space group Fdm (#227), a = 11.6682(8) Å, V = 1588.59(19) Å 3 , and Z = 16. A least-squares refinement of X-ray powder-diffraction data gave a = 11.6575(5) Å and V = 1584.22(19) Å 3 . The strongest five reflections in the powder pattern [d in Å(I)(hkl)] are: 6.70(75)(111), 4.13(100)(220), 3.52(30)(311), 2.380(50)(422), 2.064(40)(440). Results of synchrotron micro-Laue diffraction experiments are consistent [a = 11.66(2) Å]. The crystal structure of fleetite was solved and refined to R = 0.0340 based upon 153 reflections with F o > 4σ(F o ). It is isotypic with Pd 11 Bi 2 Se 2 and best described as intermetallic, with all metal atoms in 12-fold coordination. Fleetite and other late exotic phases were formed by reaction of the associated alloy phases with a fluid phase enriched in Sb, As, and S in circulation in the cooling ophiolite source-rock. The mineral is named after Michael E. Fleet (1938–2017) in recognition of his significant contributions to the Earth Sciences.

Fantastic n = 4: Ce5Co4+xGe13−ySny of the A n +1M n X3 n +1 homologous series

Ce-based intermetallics are of interest due to the potential to study the interplay of localized magnetic moments and conduction electrons. Our work on Ce-based germanides led to the identification of a new homologous series An+1MnX3n+1 (A = rare earth, M = transition metal, X = tetrels, and n = 1–6). This work presents the single-crystal growth, structure determination, and anisotropic magnetic properties of the n = 4 member of the Cen+1ConGe3n+1 homologous series. Ce5Co4+xGe13−ySny consists of three Ce sites, three Co sites, seven Ge sites, and two Sn sites, and the crystal structure is best modeled in the orthorhombic space group Cmmm where a = 4.3031(8) Å, b = 45.608(13) Å, and c = 4.3264(8) Å, which is in close agreement with the previously reported Sn-free analog where a = 4.265(1) Å, b = 45.175(9) Å, and c = 4.293(3) Å. Anisotropic magnetic measurements show Kondo-like behavior and three magnetic transitions at 6, 4.9, and 2.4 K for Ce5Co4+xGe13−ySny.

Plant ecological genomics at the limits of life in the Atacama Desert

The Atacama Desert in Chile—hyperarid and with high–ultraviolet irradiance levels—is one of the harshest environments on Earth. Yet, dozens of species grow there, including Atacama-endemic plants. Herein, we establish the Talabre–Lejía transect (TLT) in the Atacama as an unparalleled natural laboratory to study plant adaptation to extreme environmental conditions. We characterized climate, soil, plant, and soil–microbe diversity at 22 sites (every 100 m of altitude) along the TLT over a 10-y period. We quantified drought, nutrient deficiencies, large diurnal temperature oscillations, and pH gradients that define three distinct vegetational belts along the altitudinal cline. Further, we deep-sequenced transcriptomes of 32 dominant plant species spanning the major plant clades, and assessed soil microbes by metabarcoding sequencing. The top-expressed genes in the 32 Atacama species are enriched in stress responses, metabolism, and energy production. Moreover, their root-associated soils are enriched in growth-promoting bacteria, including nitrogen fixers. To identify genes associated with plant adaptation to harsh environments, we compared 32 Atacama species with the 32 closest sequenced species, comprising 70 taxa and 1,686,950 proteins. To perform phylogenomic reconstruction, we concatenated 15,972 ortholog groups into a supermatrix of 8,599,764 amino acids. Using two codon-based methods, we identified 265 candidate positively selected genes (PSGs) in the Atacama plants, 64% of which are located in Pfam domains, supporting their functional relevance. For 59/184 PSGs with an Arabidopsis ortholog, we uncovered functional evidence linking them to plant resilience. As some Atacama plants are closely related to staple crops, these candidate PSGs are a “genetic goldmine” to engineer crop resilience to face climate change.

Visibility and annoyance of the phantom array effect varies with age and history of migraine

The phantom array effect (PAE) is a series of repeated images that may be perceived when a person moves their eyes in large saccades across a light source (or a specular reflection of that light source) that is modulating in output over time. Fifty-five people, including a group of 25 who experience migraine, evaluated the visibility and annoyingness of phantom arrays produced by 85 unique temporal light modulation waveforms (including sine, rectangular, complex and DC waveforms) generated using an LED placed against a black background. Those with migraine exhibited higher average visibility compared to those without migraine ( p = 0.019) and were relatively more sensitive at higher frequencies ( p < 0.001). Younger participants also found more stimuli to be visible ( p < 0.001). The threshold sensitivity function was similar to that developed for the phantom array visibility measure (PAVM), and PAVM was effective in predicting visibility ( R 2 = 0.87 for the relevant region of PAVM < 3). While those in the migraine group did not report seeing the PAE more often in everyday life at a statistically significant level, they reported being more annoyed by it and having more unwanted physiological responses (headaches, eye fatigue and distraction/disorientation). Members of the migraine group were also more likely to have changed their behaviour in architectural spaces (such as leaving a restaurant with ‘flickering’ lights). In the four hours after completing the experiment, 64% of the migraine group (vs. 19% of the non-migraine group) reported experiencing discomfort or an adverse reaction. In particular, 41% reported experiencing a headache (vs. 8% for those in the non-migraine group).
