VLBI observations of the 3C 111 jet

VLBI observations have been made of the central component of the broad-line radio galaxy 3C 111 at 1.7 GHz and 5.0 GHz. High-dynamic-range maps at both frequencies show a one-sided jet in PA 62 + or - 1 deg but no counterjet. The lower limit to the jet/counterjet ratio is 30:1 at 5 GHz and 15:1 at 1.7 GHz. The jet is initially straight, but beyond 15 marcsec from the core it exhibits small bends or wiggles. Their onset corresponds to a sharp reduction in the rate of intensity falloff along the jet, suggesting that an instability in the jet is causing substantial particle acceleration.

Microphysics of the auroral acceleration region of other regions of the magnetosphere

Electric field and plasma measurements pertinent to the microphysics of the auroral acceleration region are reviewed. Observations in other regions of the magnetosphere, which appear to involve similar physical processes, are summarized in order to emphasize the requirement on Cluster instrumentation for wide dynamic range, high time resolution, time domain field, and particle measurements. It is suggested that the microphysics of current driven instabilities in the auroral acceleration region is duplicated in the high latitude boundary of the plasma sheet and that the macroscale structure of the tail is determined by this microphysics.

Spectral differential imaging detection of planets about nearby stars

Direct ground-based optical imaging of planets in orbit about nearby stars may be accomplished by spectral differential imaging using multiple passband acoustooptic filters with a CCD. This technique provides two essential results. First, it provides a means to modulate the stellar flux reflected from a planet while leaving the flux from the star and other sources in the same field of view unmodulated. Second, spectral differential imaging enables the CCD detector to achieve a sufficiently high dynamic range to locate planets near a star in spite of an integrated brightness differential of 5 x 10 to the 8th. Spectral differential imaging at nearby diffraction limited imaging conditions with telescope apodization can reduce the time to conduct a sensitive planetary search to a few hours in some cases. The feasibility of this idea is discussed here and shown to provide, in principle, the discrimination and sensitivity to detect a Jovian-class planet about stars at distances of about 10 parsecs. The detection of brown dwarfs is shown to be feasible as well.

Signal-to-noise limitations in white light holography

A simple derivation is given for the SNR in images reconstructed from incoherent holograms. Dependence is shown to be on the hologram SNR, object complexity, and the number of pixels in the detector. Reconstruction of involved objects becomes possible with high-dynamic-range detectors such as CCDs. White-light holograms have been produced by means of a rotational shear interferometer combined with a chromatic corrector. A digital inverse transform recreated the object.

Construction and evaluation of an imaging focussed-mesh electron multiplier for space instrumentation

A focused-mesh electron multiplier (FMEM) has been combined with a wedge and strip position-sensitive anode to create a novel detector that is considered likely to have a number of applications in space astronomy and laboratory image sensing. Results from the first application of a wedge and strip anode to an FMEM are presented including spatial resolution, spatial linearity, background rate, and pulse risetime. The converted multiplier retains the attributes of an FMEM that made it attractive in the first place, such as low background, high speed, and high dynamic range.

High spatial resolution 10 micron imaging of IRC + 10216

Precise high-resolution 10-micron images of the carbon star IRC + 10216 have been obtained with a scanned linear array. The low noise and high dynamic range of these images permit deconvolution of the telescope point-spread function, revealing the radial brightness distribution of the circumstellar dust shell: approximate reflection symmetry is found in west-east scans, with a distinct division into two components of diameter about 0.40 and 2.2 arcsec. It is shown that this morphology is consistent with published interferometric data that had cast doubt upon an earlier, idealized two-component model. The observed brightness distribution implies that the circumstellar dust density may deviate substantially from the 1/r squared radial dependence expected for spherically symmetric outflow with constant velocity and constant rate of mass loss.

Spike train generation and current-to-frequency conversion in silicon diodes

A device physics model is developed to analyze spontaneous neuron-like spike train generation in current driven silicon p(+)-n-n(+) devices in cryogenic environments. The model is shown to explain the very high dynamic range (0 to the 7th) current-to-frequency conversion and experimental features of the spike train frequency as a function of input current. The devices are interesting components for implementation of parallel asynchronous processing adjacent to cryogenically cooled focal planes because of their extremely low current and power requirements, their electronic simplicity, and their pulse coding capability, and could be used to form the hardware basis for neural networks which employ biologically plausible means of information coding.

Shift-and-add for astronomical imaging

Diffraction-limited astronomical images have been obtained utilizing a variant of the shift-and-add method. It is shown that the matched filter approach for extending the weighted shift-and-add method reduces specklegrams from extended objects and from an object dominated by photon noise. The method is aberration-insensitive and yields very high dynamic range results. The iterative method for arriving at the matched filter does not automatically converge in the case of photon-noisy specklegrams for objects with more than one maximum.

Monolithic microwave integrated circuits for sensors, radar, and communications systems; Proceedings of the Meeting, Orlando, FL, Apr. 2-4, 1991

Consideration is given to MMICs for airborne phased arrays, monolithic GaAs integrated circuit millimeter wave imaging sensors, accurate design of multiport low-noise MMICs up to 20 GHz, an ultralinear low-noise amplifier technology for space communications, variable-gain MMIC module for space applications, a high-efficiency dual-band power amplifier for radar applications, a high-density circuit approach for low-cost MMIC circuits, coplanar SIMMWIC circuits, recent advances in monolithic phased arrays, and system-level integrated circuit development for phased-array antenna applications. Consideration is also given to performance enhancement in future communications satellites with MMIC technology insertion, application of Ka-band MMIC technology for an Orbiter/ACTS communications experiment, a space-based millimeter wave debris tracking radar, low-noise high-yield octave-band feedback amplifiers to 20 GHz, quasi-optical MESFET VCOs, and a high-dynamic-range mixer using novel balun structure.

Radio morphology and parent population of X-ray selected BL Lacertae objects

High-dynamic range (typically 1700:1) radio maps of 15 X-ray BL Lac (XBL) objects from the HEAO-1 Large Area Sky Survey are presented. Morphological characteristics of these sources are compared with Fanaroff-Riley (FR) class I radio galaxies in the context of unified schemes, with reference to one-sided kiloparsec-scale emission. Evidence that cluster membership of XBLs is significantly higher than previously thought is also presented. It is shown that the extended radio powers, X-ray emission, core-to-lobe ratios, and linear sizes of the radio selected BL Lac (RBL) and XBL populations are consistent with an FR I radio galaxy parent population. A source list and VLA observing log and map parameters are provided.

Application of Phase Shifted, Laser Feedback Interferometry to Fluid Physics

We have combined the principles of phase-shifting interferometry (PSI) and laser-feedback interferometry (LFI) to produce a new instrument that can measure both optical path length (OPL) changes and discern sample reflectivity variations. In LFI, coherent feedback of the incident light either reflected directly from a surface or reflected after transmission through a region of interest will modulate the output intensity of the laser. LFI can yield a high signal-to-noise ratio even for low reflectivity samples. By combining PSI and LFI, we have produced a robust instrument, based upon a HeNe laser, with high dynamic range that can be used to measure either static (dc) or oscillatory changes along the optical path. As with other forms of interferometry, large changes in OPL require phase unwrapping. Conversely, small phase changes are limited by the fraction of a fringe that can be measured. We introduce the phase shifts with an electro-optic modulator (EOM) and use either the Carre or Hariharan algorithms to determine the phase and visibility. We have determined the accuracy and precision of our technique by measuring both the bending of a cantilevered piezoelectric bimorph and linear ramps to the EOM. Using PSI, sub-nanometer displacements can be measured. We have combined our interferometer with a commercial microscope and scanning piezoelectric stage and have measured the variation in OPL and visibility for drops of PDMS (silicone oil) on coated single crystal silicon. Our measurement of the static contact angle agrees with the value of 68 deg stated in the literature.

A Diagnostic System for Studying Energy Partitioning and Assessing the Response of the Ionosphere during HAARP Modification Experiments

This research program focused on the construction of several key radio wave diagnostics in support of the HF Active Auroral Ionospheric Research Program (HAARP). Project activities led to the design, development, and fabrication of a variety of hardware units and to the development of several menu-driven software packages for data acquisition and analysis. The principal instrumentation includes an HF (28 MHz) radar system, a VHF (50 MHz) radar system, and a high-speed radar processor consisting of three separable processing units. The processor system supports the HF and VHF radars and is capable of acquiring very detailed data with large incoherent scatter radars. In addition, a tunable HF receiver system having high dynamic range was developed primarily for measurements of stimulated electromagnetic emissions (SEE). A separate processor unit was constructed for the SEE receiver. Finally, a large amount of support instrumentation was developed to accommodate complex field experiments. Overall, the HAARP diagnostics are powerful tools for studying diverse ionospheric modification phenomena. They are also flexible enough to support a host of other missions beyond the scope of HAARP. Many new research programs have been initiated by applying the HAARP diagnostics to studies of natural atmospheric processes.

The HST T tauri star SNAPshot survey

In the nearest star-forming regions, protoplanetary disks have angular sizes of only 3-4". Millimeter interferometry has generally been limited to a resolution of 1". Groundbased coronagraphic imaging of YSOs has been restricted to radii exterior to an occulting mask (r >2"), and detect nebulosity only in the most extreme dusty systems. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is the only observatory which can provide a spatial resolution of approx. 10 AU in combination with a stable point-spread function for high dynamic range imaging at visual wavelengths. Since the December 1993 servicing mission, only 12 nearby young stars have been observed by HST with the sensitivity needed to detect circumstellar reflection nebulosity. All six of the classical T Tauri stars observed so far have shown nebulosity; three objects are compact bipolar nebulae without an optically visible star; and the three weak-line T Tauri stars observed show no evidence for circumstellar nebulosity. Disks have been directly observed in 3 of the 12 systems studied so far: HH 30, GM Aurigae, and Haro 6-5B. A larger survey offers the prospect of many more detections, and thereby can address such fundamental questions as: What is the frequency for direct detection of disks around premain sequence stars? What is the range of disk masses and sizes? How are disks different in binary systems? Our proposal for an HST T Tauri Star SNAPshot survey was approved for 75 targets in Cycle 7. A SNAPshot survey consists of short-duration (25 minutes or less) sequences of observations which can be used to fill gaps in the HST observing schedule. This is well-matched to the needs of disk imaging, where typical T Tauri stars (11 < V < 14) saturate the WFPC2 detectors in a minute or less. Only wide-band R and I images will be taken.

A Large Sparse Aperture Densified Pupil Hypertelescope Concept for Ground Based Detection of Extra-Solar Earth-Like Planets

A concept is presented for a large (10 - 30 meter) sparse aperture hyper telescope to image extrasolar earth-like planets from the ground in the presence of atmospheric seeing. The telescope achieves high dynamic range very close to bright stellar sources with good image quality using pupil densification techniques. Active correction of the perturbed wavefront is simplified by using 36 small flat mirrors arranged in a parabolic steerable array structure, eliminating the need for large delat lines and operating at near-infrared (1 - 3 Micron) wavelengths with flats comparable in size to the seeing cells.

Geostationary Spectrograph (GeoSpec) for Earth and Atmospheric Science Applications

GeoSpec will support several possible future mission concepts in the Atmospheric Sciences and in Land and Ocean Sciences by measurement of both chemically linked atmospheric trace gas concentrations and profiles of important molecules such as OS, N02, CH20 and SO2 and at the same time coastal and ocean pollution events, tidal effects, and the origin and evolution of aerosol plumes. The instrument design concept we will describe is a dual spectrograph covering the WMS wavelength region of 310- 481 nm and the VIS/NIR wavelength region of 500-900 nm. A third channel in the short- wave infrared (SWIR) region between 2.2 p and 2.4 pn for total column measurements of CO, CH4, and N20 will also be described. The goal is to design a system capable of making moderate spatial resolution (750 meters at nadir) hyperspectral measurements (0.2 to 1.2 nm resolution) from a geostationary orbit. This would enable studies of time- varying pollution and coastal change processes with a temporal resolution of 5 minutes on a regional scale to 1 hour on a continental scale. Technological advances in the design and fabrication of convex holographic gratings and large format, high dynamic range PIN/CMOS detectors at the focal plane will be exploited. By simply changing the focal length of the front-end telescope GeoSpec can accommodate different orbital altitudes, including low Earth orbit, the Sun-side Lagrangian point L1, and/or different spatial resolutions.

Wavefront Control Testbed (WCT) Experiment Results

The Wavefront Control Testbed (WCT) was created to develop and test wavefront sensing and control algorithms and software for the segmented James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Last year, we changed the system configuration from three sparse aperture segments to a filled aperture with three pie shaped segments. With this upgrade we have performed experiments on fine phasing with line-of-sight and segment-to-segment jitter, dispersed fringe visibility and grism angle;. high dynamic range tilt sensing; coarse phasing with large aberrations, and sampled sub-aperture testing. This paper reviews the results of these experiments.

Phase-Shifted Laser Feedback Interferometry

Phase-shifted, laser feedback interferometry is a new diagnostic tool developed at the NASA Lewis Research Center under the Advanced Technology Development (ATD) Program directed by NASA Headquarters Microgravity Research Division. It combines the principles of phase-shifting interferometry (PSI) and laser-feedback interferometry (LFI) to produce an instrument that can quantify both optical path length changes and sample reflectivity variations. In a homogenous medium, the optical path length between two points is the product of the index of refraction and the geometric distance between the two points. LFI differs from other forms of interferometry by using the laser as both the source and the phase detector. In LFI, coherent feedback of the incident light either reflected directly from a surface or reflected after transmission through a region of interest will modulate the output intensity of the laser. The combination of PSI and LFI has produced a robust instrument, based on a low-power helium-neon (HeNe) gas laser, with a high dynamic range that can be used to measure either static or oscillatory changes of the optical path length. Small changes in optical path length are limited by the fraction of a fringe that can be measured; we can measure nonoscillatory changes with a root mean square (rms) error of the wavelength/1000 without averaging.
