A suggested standardized format for cosmic ray ground-level event data

A standardized format is suggested for the archival storage and exchange of neutron monitor data obtained during solar flare initiated ground level cosmic ray events. Using the data for the 7 May 1978 ground level event, a format has been developed that incorporates hourly data preceding and following the event and small time interval data immediately before and during the event. Provision has been made for the inclusion of uncorrected and corrected data as well as the atmospheric pressure. The cosmic ray intensity data are then reduced to a standard counting rate of counts per second facilitating the graphing and comparison of these data for various analyses.

Improving the Estimation of the Atmospheric Water Vapor Pressure Using Interpretable Long Short-Term Memory Networks: Dataset, Python code, and trained models

Atmospheric water vapor pressure is an essential meteorological control on land surface and hydrologic processes. It is not as frequently observed as other meteorologic conditions, but often inferred through the August–Roche–Magnus formula by simply assuming dew point and daily minimum temperatures are equivalent or by empirically correlating the two temperatures using an aridity correction. The performance of both methods varies considerably across different regions and during different time periods; obtaining consistently accurate estimates across space and time remains a great challenge. We applied an interpretable Long Short-Term Memory (iLSTM) network conditioned on static, location specific attributes to estimate daily vapor pressure for 83 FLUXNET sites in the United States and Canada. This data package includes all raw data of the 83 FLUXNET sites, input data for model training/validation/test, trained models and results, and python codes for the manuscript "Improving the Estimation of the Atmospheric Water Vapor Pressure Using an Interpretable Long Short-term Memory Network". Specifically, it consists of five parts. - First, "1_Daymet_data_83sites.zip" includes raw data downloaded from Daymet for the 83 sites used in the paper according to their longitude and latitude, in which vapor pressure is used. It also includes a pre-processed CSV data file combining all data from the 83 sites which is specifically used for the paper. - Second, "2_Fluxnet2015_data_83sites.zip" includes raw half hourly data of the 83 sites downloaded from FLUXNET2015 data portal, pre-processed daily data of the 83 sites, a CSV file including combined pre-processed daily data of the 83 sites, and a CSV file including the information (site ID, site name, latitude, longitude, data available period) of the 83 sites. - Third, "3_MODIS_LAI_data_83sites_raw.zip" includes raw leaf area index (LAI) data downloaded from the AppEEARs data portal. - Fourth, "4_Scripts.zip" includes all scripts related to model training and post-processing of a trained model, and a jupyter notebook showing an example for model post-processing. Two typo errors in files titled "run2get_args.py" and "postprocess.py" were corrected on March 27, 2024 to avoid confusions. - Finally, "Trained_models_and_results.zip" includes three folders and three files with suffix ".npy", and each folder corresponds to one file with suffix ".npy" with the same title. Each of the three folders include all trained models associated with one iLSTM model configuration (35 models for each configuration, details are described in the paper). Each file with suffix ".npy" includes the post-processed results of the corresponding 35 models under one iLSTM model configuration.

Enabling Reanalysis Research Using the Collaborative Reanalysis Technical Environment (CREATE)

Modern atmospheric and oceanic reanalysis are valuable assets for atmospheric research and climate monitoring (Kalnay et al. 1996). Now that most reanalysis records are more than 36 years long, the data have become more useful for climate modeling research (Dole et al. 2008). For investigators who need to use multiple reanalysis, a common challenge is that the data are distributed at various sites and often in different formats. The NASA CREATE system provides access to the data in one location in a standard format (one variable per file and standardized metadata in the CMIP5 style; see Table 1 for a list of the key acronyms used in this paper). The collection includes monthly and 6-hourly data from the seven major atmospheric reanalysis: CFSR (Saha et al. 2010), ERA-Interim (Dee et al. 2011), MERRA (Rienecker et al. 2011), MERRA-2 (Gelaro et al. 2017), JRA-25 (Onogi et al. 2007), JRA-55 (Kobayashi et al. 2014), and 20CRv2c (Compo et al. 2011). An ancillary portion of CREATE includes eight ocean reanalysis: NCEP CFSR, CMCC C-GLORSv5 (Storto et al. 2016), ECMWF ORAS4 (Balmaseda et al.2013), ECMWF ORAP5.0 (Zuo et al. 2015), University of Hamburg GECCO2 (Köhl 2015), GFDL ECDA (Zhang et al. 2007), NOAA GODAS (Saha et al. 2010), and MOVE/MRI.COM-G2i (Toyoda et al. 2016). The ocean state variables were similarly reformatted but were then also regridded onto a common horizontal and vertical grid. This approach facilitated the calculation of an ensemble average and spread that is also published alongside the native gridded data. A third reanalysis product is a global hourly 0.5° land surface air temperature dataset constructed by Wang and Zeng (2013). All three datasets are distributed through the ESGF in a format consistent with the CMIP style described by Cinquini et al. (2014).

CERES ERBE-like Monthly Regional Averages (ES-9) in HDF (CER_ES9_PFM+FM2_Edition1)

The ERBE-like Monthly Regional Averages (ES-9) product contains a month of space and time averaged Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) data for a single scanner instrument. The ES-9 is also produced for combinations of scanner instruments. All instantaneous shortwave and longwave fluxes at the Top-of-the-Atmosphere (TOA) from the CERES ES-8 product for a month are sorted by 2.5-degree spatial regions, by day number, and by the local hour of observation. The mean of the instantaneous fluxes for a given region-day-hour bin is determined and recorded on the ES-9 along with other flux statistics and scene information. For each region, the daily average flux is estimated from an algorithm that uses the available hourly data, scene identification data, and diurnal models. This algorithm is 'like' the algorithm used for the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE). The ES-9 also contains hourly average fluxes for the month and an overall monthly average for each region. These average fluxes are given for both clear-sky and total-sky scenes. CERES ERBE-like Monthly Regional Averages (ES-9) in HDF (CER_ES9_PFM+FM2_Edition2)
