Optical Follow-Up Observations of PTF10qts, a Luminous Broad-Lined Type Ic Supernova Found by the Palomar Transient Factory

We present optical photometry and spectroscopy of the broad-lined Type Ic supernova (SN Ic-BL) PTF10qts, which was discovered as part of the Palomar Transient Factory. The supernova was located in a dwarf galaxy of magnitude r = 21.1 at a redshift z = 0.0907.We find that the R-band light curve is a poor proxy for bolometric data and use photometric and spectroscopic data to construct and constrain the bolometric light curve. The derived bolometric magnitude at maximum light is Mbol = −18.51 +/- 0.2 mag, comparable to that of SN1998bw (Mbol = -18.7 mag) which was associated with a gamma-ray burst (GRB). PTF10qts is one of the most luminous SN Ic-BL observed without an accompanying GRB. We estimate the physical parameters of the explosion using data from our programme of follow-up observations, finding that it produced a larger mass of radioactive nickel compared to other SNeIc-BL with similar inferred ejecta masses and kinetic energies. The progenitor of the event was likely a approximately 20 solar mass star.

Evidence for Late-stage Eruptive Mass Loss in the Progenitor to SN2018gep, a Broad-lined Ic Supernova: Pre-explosion Emission and a Rapidly Rising Luminous Transient

We present detailed observations of ZTF18abukavn (SN2018gep), discovered in high-cadence data from the Zwicky Transient Facility as a rapidly rising (1.4 ± 0.1 mag/hr) and luminous (M(g,peak) = -20 mag) transient. It is spectroscopically classified as a broad-lined stripped-envelope supernova (Ic-BL SN). The high peak luminosity (L(bol) ≳ 3 x 10^(44) erg/s), the short rise time (t = 3 days rise in g band), and the blue colors at peak (g–r ~ -0.4) all resemble the high-redshift Ic-BL iPTF16asu, as well as several other unclassified fast transients. The early discovery of SN2018gep (within an hour of shock breakout) enabled an intensive spectroscopic campaign, including the highest-temperature (T(eff) ≳ 40,000 K) spectra of a stripped-envelope SN. A retrospective search revealed luminous (M(g) ~ M(r) ≈ -14 mag) emission in the days to weeks before explosion, the first definitive detection of precursor emission for a Ic-BL. We find a limit on the isotropic gamma-ray energy release E(γ,iso) < 4.9 x 10^(48) erg, a limit on X-ray emission L(X) < 10^(40) erg/s, and a limit on radio emission vL(v) ≲ 10^(37) erg/s. Taken together, we find that the early (<10 days) data are best explained by shock breakout in a massive shell of dense circumstellar material (0.02 Mꙩ) at large radii (3 x 10^(14) cm) that was ejected in eruptive pre-explosion mass-loss episodes. The late-time (>10 days) light curve requires an additional energy source, which could be the radioactive decay of Ni-56.

Feature Engineering and Ensemble Methods for Imbalanced ICS Intrusion Detection: Pipeline Audit and Constrained Evaluation

Industries are becoming increasingly connected and are more vulnerable to cyberattacks due to the widened attack surface. Industrial Control Systems (ICS) are among the most critical sectors that malicious actors can target, as such attacks can cause significant operational disruption and physical damage. It is imperative to detect such attacks as early as possible. This paper evaluates constraint-conditioned optimistic performance estimates for traditional ML models in ICS intrusion detection (i.e., estimates obtained under contiguous, non-shuffled temporal evaluation without test-set alteration, but with pre-split feature engineering that may introduce temporal leakage, due to dataset constraints). Our findings are threefold. First, we quantify how iterative feature engineering affects tree-based ensemble performance and examine how pipeline decisions (split strategy, sampling scope, and cleaning policy) can inflate or reduce reported IDS results under constraint-bound evaluation. Second, we compare intrinsic class-imbalance handling across ensemble models. Third, under our current pipeline constraints (including pre-split feature engineering), CatBoost achieves the best performance on Water Storage Tank (accuracy: 0.9831, class-1 F1: 0.9682), while Light- GBM achieves the best performance on Gas Pipeline (accuracy: 0.9618, class-1 F1: 0.9086).

The Impact of Time-Aware Design Choices in ICS Anomaly Detection

Industrial control systems (ICS) remain vulnerable to increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks, yet evaluating anomaly detection models in these environments is challenging due to temporal dependencies, missing-not-at-random patterns, and extremely imbalanced datasets. These factors make common practices—especially random data splits and na¨ıve imputation— prone to severe temporal leakage, which can inflate reported performance and obscure real-world limitations. In this work, we systematically examine classical machine learning models, temporal deep learning architecture, and tensordecomposition– based methods on a gas-pipeline dataset using a fully temporally separated evaluation pipeline designed to mimic realistic deployment conditions. Our findings show that proper temporal handling and MNAR-aware preprocessing significantly alter the relative performance of popular anomaly-detection methods, providing practical guidance for designing reliable, leakage-resistant ICS intrusion-detection systems.

Processing Choices for Achieving Long Term IC Operation at 500 °C

The prospects for beneficial infusion of integrated circuits (ICs) into previously inaccessible extreme-temperature application environments has increased with recent NASA Glenn demonstrations of 4H-SiC Junction Field Effect Transistor & Resistor (JFET-R) chips functioning for over a year at 500 °C in air ambient. This paper focuses on fabrication process choices believed key to demonstrated 500 °C durability that must be considered when porting this uniquely durable IC capability into commercial foundry manufacturing.

EP 250108a/SN 2025kg: Observations of the Most Nearby Broad-line Type Ic Supernova Following an Einstein Probe Fast X-Ray Transient

With a small sample of fast X-ray transients (FXTs) with multiwavelength counterparts discovered to date, their progenitors and connections to γ-ray bursts (GRBs) and supernovae (SNe) remain ambiguous. Here, we present photometric and spectroscopic observations of SN 2025kg, the SN counterpart to the FXT EP 250108a. At z = 0.17641, this is the closest known SN discovered following an Einstein Probe (EP) FXT. We show that SN 2025kg’s optical spectra reveal the hallmark features of a broad-lined Type Ic SN. Its light-curve evolution and expansion velocities are comparable to those of GRB-SNe, including SN 1998bw, and two past FXT-SNe. We present JWST/NIRSpec spectroscopy taken around SN 2025kg’s maximum light, and find weak absorption due to He I 1.0830 μm and 2.0581 μm and a broad, unidentified emission feature at ∼4–4.5 μm. Further, we observe broadened Hα in optical data at 42.5 days that is not detected at other epochs, indicating interaction with H-rich material. From its light curve, we derive a 56 Ni mass of 0.2–0.6 M ⊙ . Together with our companion Letter, our broadband data are consistent with a trapped or low-energy (≲10 51 erg) jet-driven explosion from a collapsar with a zero-age main-sequence mass of 15–30 M ⊙ . Finally, we show that the sample of EP FXT-SNe supports past estimates that low-luminosity jets seen through FXTs are more common than successful (GRB) jets, and that similar FXT-like signatures are likely present in at least a few percent of the brightest Type Ic-BL SNe.

X-ray observations of the supernova remnant IC 443

Presented observation data from OSO-7 are shown to confirm the identification of IC 443 as an X-ray source, with a spectrum which is consistent with either thermal bremsstrahlung or a power law. These data lead to an age of 3400 years for IC 443, much younger than previous estimates.

Estimation of Ksub Ic from slow bend precracked Charpy specimen strength ratios

Strength ratios are reported which were derived from slow bend tests on 0.25 inch thick precracked Charpy specimens of steels, aluminum alloys, and a titanium alloy for which valid K sub Ic values were established. The strength ratios were used to develop calibration curves typical of those that could be useful in estimating K sub Ic for the purposes of alloy development of quality control.

Chemical classification of iron meteorites. VIII - Groups IC, IIE, IIIF and 97 other irons

Results are reported for determinations of Ni, Ga, Ge, and Ir concentrations in 106 iron meteorites. Three new groups are defined (IC, IIE, and IIIF) which contain 10, 12, and 5 irons, respectively. It is noted that group IC is a cohenite-rich group distantly related to IA, group IIE consists of those irons previously designated as Weekeroo Station type together with five others having similar compositions but diverse structures, and group IIIF is a well-defined group of low-Ni and low-Ge irons. Several anomalous irons are discussed, including a cluster of five plessitic octahedrites and ataxites with Ge/Ga atomic ratios ranging from 10 to 16 and a meteorite that has the second highest Ni content of any iron. It is shown that the IIE irons are compositionally similar to the mesosiderites and pallasites, and it is suggested that the three groups probably formed at approximately the same heliocentric distance.

A study of the IC 5146 dark cloud complex

The IC 5146 dark cloud complex has been studied in the infrared in order to identify and study associated young stellar objects. Most of the objects detected in the survey appear to be field stars, predominantly late-type giants. Three young objects were detected in the survey: the B0 star BD +46 deg 3474, the Ae star BD +46 deg 3471, and a previously unidentified object which appears to be a heavily obscured FU Orionis star. The properties of the last two objects are examined in detail, and an attempt is made to produce reasonable models for them. It is suggested that FU Orionis stars are binaries, and some consequences of this model are described. Photometry of the brighter stars in the IC 5146 cluster has been used to establish a distance to the cluster of 900 + or - 100 pc.

X-ray observation of IC 4329 A

X-rays from the extreme type 1 Seyfert galaxy IC 4329 A have been observed with the rotating modulation collimator on board SAS 3. In addition to establishing IC 4329 A as an X-ray source, the SAS 3 data require that the source be extended, that there be at least one other nearby source, or both.

X-ray images of Puppis A and IC 443

X-ray images of the Puppis A and IC 443 supernova remnants, recorded with a rocket-borne imaging X-ray telescope, are presented. These images indicate a complex X-ray morphology and only weak correlation with the radio and optical pictures. The observations lend further support to a picture wherein Puppis A, IC 443, and possibly most other supernova remnants of moderate age result from blast waves propagating into a substantially inhomogeneous interstellar medium. We conclude that caution must be used in interpreting X-ray observations in terms of simple blast-wave models where spherical symmetry is assumed.

Photonitride passivating coating for IC's

Increased reliability and simplified fabrication result from postassembly preencapsulation passivation process. Photonitride reaction chamber receives silane, ammonia, and mercury from mixing manifold to form passivating coating on IC's. Photonitride layer is barrier to moisture and penetration by mobile ions, and helps to protect IC devices subjected to severe mechanical handling or circuit repair procedures. Process is compatible with variety of wire-bonded lead frame assemblies. Advantages over plasma and sputtering deposition processes are low deposition temperature and zero stray radiation and ion levels.

Infrared spectra of IC 418 and NGC 6572

Spectrophotometric observations from 2 to 4 and 8 to 13 microns of NGC 6572 and from 4 to 13 microns of IC 418 are reported. Also reported are observations of the size of IC 418 in the optical and at 1.65 and 2.2 microns. Both planetary nebulae emit more radiation than expected from recombination at wavelengths longer than -4 microns; this radiation is attributed to heated dust. The spectra show a plateau from 10.5 to 13 microns, and this peak is tentatively attributed to emission from large silicon carbide particles. Fine-structure emission lines are also discussed; the presence of (forbidden Ar III) but not (forbidden Ne II) in NGC 6572 suggests that ions having the same ionization potential can nevertheless have different fractional abundances.
