Improved Indentation Test for Measuring Nonlinear Elasticity

A cylindrical-punch indentation technique has been developed as a means of measuring the nonlinear elastic responses of materials -- more specifically, for measuring the moduli of elasticity of materials in cases in which these moduli vary with applied loads. This technique offers no advantage for characterizing materials that exhibit purely linear elastic responses (constant moduli of elasticity, independent of applied loads). However, the technique offers a significant advantage for characterizing such important materials as plasma-sprayed thermal-barrier coatings, which, in cyclic loading, exhibit nonlinear elasticity with hysteresis related to compaction and sliding within their microstructures.

Analysis of Progressive Damage in Cross-Ply and Quasi-Isotropic Panels Subjected to Quasi-Static Indentation

The performance of a three-dimensional continuum damage mechanics (CDM) model for intralaminar damage, coupled with a cohesive zone model for delamination, is examined for damage prediction in cross-ply and quasi-isotropic laminated plates subjected to quasi-static transverse indentation. Details of the CDM model based on the deformation gradient decomposition (DGD) method and the finite element (FE) modeling strategy are presented and discussed. Critical features of the damage model and FE modeling approach are assessed by comparing analysis predictions to experimental data for cross-ply and quasi-isotropic panels in which damage is dominated by complex interactions between matrix cracks and delaminations.

Use of statical indentation laws in the impact analysis of laminated composite plates

The low-velocity impact response of graphite/epoxy laminates was investigated theoretically and experimentally. A nine-node isoparametric plate finite element in conjunction with an empirical contact law was used for the theoretical investigation. Theoretical results are in good agreement with strain-gage experimental data. The results of the investigation indicate that the present theoretical procedure describes the impact response of laminate for low-impact velocities.
