Suppression of diffraction in deep-inelastic scattering on nuclei and dynamical mechanism of leading twist nuclear shadowing

Abstract Using the leading twist approach (LTA) to nuclear shadowing, we calculate the ratios of diffractive and usual parton distributions for a heavy nucleus (Pb) and the proton,$$ {R}_{A/p}=\left({f}_{i/A}^{D(3)}/{f}_{i/A}\right)/\left({f}_{i/p}^{D(3)}/{f}_{i/p}\right) $$ R A / p = f i / A D 3 / f i / A / f i / p D 3 / f i / p , for coherent and summed (coherent plus quasi-elastic) nuclear deep-inelastic scattering. We find thatR A/p ≈ 0.5 − 1 for quarks as well as for the ratio of the diffractive and total cross sections$$ {\left[\left({d\sigma}_{\textrm{diff}}/{d M}_X^2\right)/{\sigma}_{\textrm{tot}}\right]}_{eA}/{\left[\left({d\sigma}_{\textrm{diff}}/{d M}_X^2\right)/{\sigma}_{\textrm{tot}}\right]}_{ep} $$ dσ diff / dM X 2 / σ tot eA / dσ diff / dM X 2 / σ tot ep andR A/p ≈ 0.5 − 1.3 for gluons in a broad range ofx, including the kinematics of the Electron-Ion Collider, which reaffirms the difference from the nuclear enhancement ofR A/p predicted in the gluon saturation framework. We demonstrate that the magnitude ofR A/p is controlled by the cross section of the interaction of hadronic fluctuations of the virtual photon with target nucleons, which explains an enhancement ofR A/p in the color dipole model and its suppression in LTA. We argue that the black disk limit corresponds toR A/p = 1 and$$ {R}_{A/p}^{\textrm{coh}} $$ R A / p coh = 0.86 for the summed and coherent scattering, respectively. Relying on an intuitive definition of the saturation scale, we show that the ratio of the saturation scales of a heavy nucleus and proton$$ {Q}_{sA}^2(b)/{Q}_{sp}^2(b)\approx 1 $$ Q sA 2 b / Q sp 2 b ≈ 1 at small impact parametersbdue to the strong leading twist nuclear shadowing and diluteness of the nuclear density.

Inelastic scattering in planetary atmospheres. I - The Ring effect, without aerosols

The contribution of inelastic molecular scattering (Rayleigh-Brillouin and rotational Raman scattering) to the filling-in of Fraunhofer lines in the light of the blue sky is studied. Aerosol fluorescence is shown to be negligible, and aerosol scattering is ignored. The angular and polarization dependences of the filling-in detail for single scattering are discussed. An approximate treatment of multiple scattering, using a backward Monte Carlo technique, makes it possible to investigate the effects of the ground albedo. As the molecular scatterings alone produce more line-filling than is observed, it seems likely that aerosols dilute the effect by contributing unaltered sunlight to the observed spectra.

Energy-energy correlators in 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − annihilation and deep inelastic scattering

We study energy-energy correlators (EECs) in 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − annihilation and deep inelastic lepton-hadron scattering (DIS), focusing on aspects of nonperturbative physics in these observables. We introduce the EEC jet functions and investigate the infrared behavior of both small-angle EECs and angle-integrated EECs by performing explicit one-loop calculations. The factorization and universality of the EECs in these processes are demonstrated. A matching scheme is proposed to smoothly connect kinematic regions where different scaling behaviors with jet energy are observed. In combination with the next-to-leading order correction, this matching provides a good description of the EEC data and pythia simulations in high-energy 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − annihilation. Predictions for DIS processes for future electron-ion collider kinematics are also presented.

Dihadron azimuthal correlations in deep-inelastic scattering off nuclear targets

We measured the nuclear dependence of the di-pion azimuthal correlation function in deepinelastic scattering (DIS) using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) and a 5 GeV electron beam. As the nuclear-target size increases, transitioning from deuterium to carbon, iron, and lead, the correlation function broadens monotonically. Its shape exhibits a significant dependence on kinematics, including the transverse momentum of the pions and the difference in their rapidity. None of the various Monte-Carlo event generators we evaluated could fully replicate the observed correlation functions and nuclear effects throughout the entire phase space. As the first study of its kind in DIS experiments, this research provides an important baseline for enhancing our understanding of the interplay between the nuclear medium and the hadronization process in these reactions.

Inelastic scattering in atom-diatomic molecule collisions. I - Rotational transitions in the sudden approximation

The impact parameter method and the sudden approximation are applied to determine the total probability of inelastic rotational transitions arising from a collision of an atom and a homonuclear diatomic molecule at large impact parameters. An analytical approximation to this probability is found for conditions where the electron exchange or overlap forces dominate the scattering. An approximate upper bound to the range of impact parameters for which rotational scattering can be important is determined. In addition, an estimate of the total inelastic cross section is found at conditions for which a statistical model describes the scattering well. The results of this analysis are applied to Ar-O2 collisions and may be readily applied to other combinations of atoms and molecules.

Precision ultranarrow-linewidth resonance excitation (PURE) preparation of a molecular beam of nitric oxide molecules for inelastic scattering with argon

We recently reported a novel technique that utilizes narrow-linewidth lasers to selectively excite molecules into a pure quantum state with a well-resolved, tunable distribution of velocities [O. A. Krohn and D. W. Chandler, J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 15(50), 12455–12463 (2024)]. We refer to the preparation of molecules by this technique as precision ultranarrow-linewidth resonant excitation (PURE) preparation. Here, in this study, we pair this PURE preparation methodology with active frequency stabilization of the quantum cascade laser that drives the excitation. In doing so, highly velocity-resolved packets of molecules are possible, with the limitations of this velocity resolution set by the stability of the laser locking and the spectral linewidth of the transition. We show that side-of-fringe locking to a Doppler-broadened absorption spectrum of our target molecule is sufficiently stable for PURE preparation of molecules for long timescales (several hours) with highly resolved velocity spreads (σ < 3 m/s). To demonstrate the scientific utility of this new capability, we present differential cross sections from scattering between a neat molecular beam of argon and a velocity-selected beam of nitric oxide (NO) in a pure quantum state. We observe well-resolved quantum diffraction oscillations in the forward-scattered collisions as well as general trends consistent with prior characterized collisions of NO + Ar.

Elastic and inelastic scattering of positrons in gases and solids

Three apparatuses were designed and built: The first, which is now operative, was designed to study the details of positron thermalization in solids and the subsequent emission of the low energy positrons from moderating foils; The second apparatus now under test is a positron bottle similar in design to an electron trap. It was built to store positrons at a fixed energy and to look at the number of stored positrons (storage time) as a function of a scattering gas in the vacuum chamber. The third apparatus is a crossed beam apparatus where positron-, alkali scattering will be studied. Much of the apparatus is now under test with electrons.

Effect of charge polarization on inelastic scattering - Differential and integral cross sections for excitation of the 2/super 1/S state of helium by electron impact.

Experimental differential scattering cross sections for excitation of helium by electron impact from its ground state to its 2(super 1)S state are presented at four incident electron energies in the range from 26 to 55.5 eV for scattering angles between 10 and 70 deg and at 81.6 eV for scattering angles between 10 and 80 deg. These cross sections are normalized and compared with results predicted by the Born approximation, the polarized Born approximation, and several other first-order approximations in which direct excitation is calculated in the Born approximation and exchange scattering in various Ochkur-like approximations.
