The internal structure of the Michigan Evaluation Aid for Perphormability (METAPHOR), an interactive software package to facilitate performability modeling and evaluation is described. Revised supplemented guides are prepared in order to maintain an up-to-date documentation of the system. Programmed tools to facilitate each step of performability model construction and model solution are given.
General information concerning METAPHOR, an interactive software package to facilitate performability modeling and evaluation, is presented. Example systems are studied and their performabilities are calculated. Each available METAPHOR command and array generator is described. Complete METAPHOR sessions are included.
The implementation of an interactive software development system (UCSD PASCAL) on the MODCOMP computer is discussed. The development of an interpreter for the MODCOMP II and the MODCOMP IV computers, written in MODCOMP II assembly language, is described. The complete Pascal programming system was run successfully on a MODCOMP II and MODCOMP IV under both the MAX II/III and MAX IV operating systems. The source code for an 8080 microcomputer version of the interpreter was used as the design for the MODCOMP interpreter. A mapping of the functions within the 8080 interpreter into MODCOMP II assembly language was the method used to code the interpreter.
Documentation of the interactive software package designed to predict the effect of certain electrical and mechanical imperfections on the performance of the SPS system is presented. The capabilities of the SOLARSIM program to quantify the spacetenna performance parameter values are described. The SOLARSIM package can compute the RMS pointing error, title effects, MPTX code tracking loop performance, MPTX carrier tracking loop performance, averaged power pattern, and the power transfer efficiency.
The Operator Station Design System (OSDS), a technique of applied computer graphics featuring a flexible interactive software package, is presented in terms of man-machine analyses, flight operations, and systems engineering. In man-machine analyses, the OSDS was used to determine if viewing from the Shuttle Remote Manipulator System was satisfactory and to identify requirements for a pallet-mounted television camera. In another study, extravehicular activity was analyzed using the example of emergency access to latches should they fail in orbit. In terms of flight operations, OSDS can be used to evaluate array monitoring of a solar array power system complex and to provide animated scenarios of mission operations. The most important application of OSDS is in relation to systems engineering, as OSDS can be used to analyze spacecraft and payload design and integration. Payload configurations are included.
Reynolds and Smith (1979) have considered the combined use of digital weather radar and satellite data in interactive systems for case study analysis and forecasting. Satellites view the top of clouds, whereas radar is capable of observing the detailed internal structure of clouds. The considered approach requires the use of a common coordinate system. In the present investigation, it was decided to use the satellite coordinate system as the base system in order to maintain the fullest resolution of the satellite data. The investigation is concerned with the development of a general interactive software system called RADPAK for remapping and analyzing conventional and Doppler radar data. RADPAK is implemented as a part of a minicomputer-based image processing system, called Atmospheric and Oceanographic Image Processing System. Attention is given to a general description of the RADPAK system, remapping methodology, and an example of satellite remapping.
A summary of the development, use, and documentation of the interactive software (DIGIKON IV) for flight control system analyses is presented. A list of recommendations for future development is also included.
The use of the Pilot Climate Data System's (PCDS) CHARTS Subsystem is described. This facility is an interactive software system for the graphical production and enhancement of text and viewgraph displays.
Material removed by laser action as part tested for balance. Directed by microprocessor, laser fires appropriate amount of pulses in correct locations to remove necessary amount of material. Operator and microprocessor software interact through video screen and keypad; no programing skills or unprompted system-control decisions required. System provides complete and accurate balancing in single load-and-spinup cycle.
An interactive software package which provides design solutions for both standard linear quadratic regulator (LQR) and suboptimal linear regulator problems is described. Intended for time-invariant continuous systems, the package is easily modified to include sampled-data systems. LQR designs are obtained by established techniques while the large class of suboptimal problems containing controller and/or performance index options is solved using a robust gradient minimization technique. Numerical examples demonstrate features of the package and recent developments are described.
A microcomputer-based data-acquisition system has been developed for astronomical observing with two-dimensional infrared detector arrays. The hardware used is a 16-bit, 8086/8087 based system operating at 8 MHz. Data rates of up to 454,000 pixels per second are supported. The hardware is operated using interactive software which supports several modes of data acquisition.
One of the goals for the Space Station is to achieve greater autonomy, and have less reliance on ground commanding than previous space missions. This means that the crew will have to take an active role in scheduling and rescheduling their activities onboard, perhaps working from preliminary schedules generated on the ground. Scheduling is a time intensive task, whether performed manually or automatically, so the best approach to solving onboard scheduling problems may involve crew members working with an interactive software scheduling package. A project is described which investigates a system that uses knowledge based techniques for the rescheduling of experiments within the Materials Technology Laboratory of the Space Station. Particular attention is paid to: (1) methods for rapid response rescheduling to accommodate unplanned changes in resource availability, (2) the nature of the interface to the crew, (3) the representation of the many types of data within the knowledge base, and (4) the possibility of applying rule-based and constraint-based reasoning methods to onboard activity scheduling.
An interactive procedure to construct grids about fighter aircraft configurations using a 'state-of-the-art' workstation is described. A multiple-block grid topology is used to minimize grid skewness. Grid points on the surface of a configuration are precomputed and stored on the faces of appropriate blocks. Grid points at intermediate and far field boundary surfaces are computed with analytical functions and stored on appropriate faces. Grid points in the interior of blocks are computed using transfinite interpolation with Lagrangian and exponential blending functions. Interactive software has been written for the IRIS 3030 graphics workstation to control the shape and spacing of grid points on intermediate and far field boundaries, and to control the interior interpolation.
An overview of an interactive software environment for space mission design termed QUICK is presented. This stand-alone program provides a programmable FORTRAN-like calculator interface to a wide range of both built-in and user defined functions. QUICK has evolved into a general-purpose software environment that can be intrinsically and dynamically customized for a wide range of mission design applications. Specific applications are described for some space programs, e.g., the earth-Venus-Mars mission, the Cassini mission to Saturn, the Mars Observer, the Galileo Project, and the Magellan Spacecraft.
MacMultiview is interactive software tool for Macintosh II family of computers enabling one to display, and make computations using, polarimetric radar data collected by Jet Propulsion Laboratory's imaging SAR (synthetic-aperture radar) polarimeter system. Provides two basic functions: synthesis of polarimetric images and computation of polarization signatures. System includes single-frequency L-band sensor mounted on NASA CV990 aircraft and its replacement, multifrequency P-, L-, and C-band sensors mounted on NASA DC-8 airplane. Written in C.
The Analytic Patch Configuration (APC) is an interactive software tool which translates aircraft configuration geometry files from one format into another. This initial release of the APC Gateway accommodates six formats: the four accepted APC formats (89f, 89fd, 89u, and 89ud), the PATRAN 2.x phase 1 neutral file format, and the Integrated Aerodynamic Analysis System (IAAS) General Geometry (GG) format. Written in ANSI FORTRAN 77 and completely self-contained, the APC Gateway is very portable and was already installed on CDC/NOS, VAX/VMS, SUN, SGI/IRIS, CONVEX, and GRAY hosts.
The Land Analysis System (LAS) is an interactive software system, available in the public domain, for the analysis, display, and management of multispectral and other digital image data. The system was developed to support earth sciences research and development activities. LAS provides over 240 applications functions and utilities, a flexible user interface, complete on-line and hardcopy documentation, extensive image data file management, reformatting, and conversion utilities, and high level device independent access to image display hardware. The capabilities are summarized of the latest release of the system (version 5). Emphasis is given to the system portability and the isolation of hardware and software dependencies in this release.
The GEOTAIL spacecraft of the International Solar-Terrestrial Physics Program will use a series of paired lunar swingbys to explore distant parts of the earth's magnetic tail. A 21-day launch window has been calculated for GEOTAIL, in July and August 1992, to start its distant-tail phase with a first lunar swingby (S1) on September 8, 1992. The main launch window in July utilizes 4.5 revolutions in a transfer orbit to S1, with a mid-August contingency window that uses 2.5 transfer-orbit revolutions before S1. Designing a good distant-tail trajectory, and then accurately matching it at S1 for every day in the launch window, seems to be the easiest and most reliable strategy. However, the total delta-V costs of the current designs can probably be reduced, possibly with the help of new interactive software that can be run on personal computers.
