Europa Lander Trajectory Design Using Lissajous Staging Orbits

Lissajous orbits and approximation of their invariant manifolds are used to generate landing trajectories to the surface of Europa. Each lissajous is discretized into individual revolutions that each resemble a periodic orbit. The unstable manifolds of each individual revolution propagated forward in time generate more surface coverage than manifolds of simple libration point orbits such as halo or Lyapunov orbits. The stable manifolds propagated backwards in time from the individual lissajous revolutions provide direct connections to the last phase of a moon tour. The strategy developed produces ballistic landing trajectories with a wide surface coverage, and allows for the decoupling of the landing and moon tour phase by using the lissajous as an intermediate staging orbit. The multiple revolutions of the lissajous, multiple departure times along each revolution, multiple quasi periodic options at each energy, and multiple energies of the lissajous family provide many degrees of freedom in the design process.

Optimal Low Thrust Orbit Transfers for Space Telescope Refueling at SEL2

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), a ten billion-dollar infrared telescope with a 6.5m primary mirror to be launched in 2021, is designed to operate in a Halo orbit around the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point (SEL2) for five to ten years. At that point fuel for station keeping and attitude maneuvers will run out. Refueling missions to JWST, as well as to similar space telescope missions proposed for SEL2, could greatly enhance the “science-per-dollar” value and promote a more sustainable use of space assets. In this paper, we present a novel approach to designing fuel optimal trajectories that will allow the refueling spacecraft to arrive at the SEL2 Halo orbit with maximum final mass (i.e. fuel payload). The low thrust optimal control problem is formulated using an indirect optimization method, leading to a two-point boundary value problem with a bang-bang control structure. We make use of a hyperbolic tangent smoothing technique for performing continuation on the thrust magnitude to reduce the sharpness of the control switches in early iterations and, thus, promote convergence. The problem is posed and solved in the circular restricted three-body problem. In this dynamical system, invariant manifolds exist that can be utilized to reduce fuel consumption. The here presented methodology to this challenging and important problem in astrodynamics demonstrates a significant potential for low-cost refueling mission design.

New Tools for Tour Design: Swiss Cheese Plot, Invariant Funnel, and Resonant Encounter Map

We define a new set of tools for tour design introduced in previous work: the”Swiss Cheese Plot,” ”Invariant Funnel,” and ”Resonant Encounter Map.” These tools promise to be useful in designing, analyzing, and navigating low-energy trajectories through multi-body systems. We review and clarify methods for generating the swiss cheese plot and invariant funnels in the Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem. We introduce the resonant encounter map as a graphical representation of the three-body design space, similar to the pork-chop plot for the two-body problem. We also discuss some interesting characteristics of the resonant encounter map and its connection to the invariant manifolds of periodic libration orbit

Cislunar Trajectory Design and Maneuver Autonomy for NASA's Moon to Mars Architecture

NASA’s Moon to Mars architecture is an ambitious roadmap of manned cislunar and deep space exploration. The extensive amount of orbital assets required will place a significant burden on ground-based resources, such as communication networks and operations facilities. Spacecraft autonomy is essential for maintaining a vast number of complex missions beyond Earth orbit. To achieve full autonomy, spacecraft must be able to employ methods of robust maneuver design without an explicit dependence on commands sent from the ground. This level of autonomy is needed not only for stationkeeping, but also for outbound transfers. To address the need of spacecraft maneuver design autonomy, this work investigates the use of neural networks (NNs) in a supervised learning environment. A supervised learning approach for NNs allows for a curated training data set, consisting exclusively of perturbations applied to a desired mission concept of operations (ConOps). The proposed approach allows humans on the ground to design a specific mission ConOps before flight, then employ NNs to fly the mission robustly and autonomously. This investigation numerically tests maneuver autonomy in four highly sensitive regions of flight: orbit raising, translunar injection burns, powered lunar flybys, and invariant manifold insertion burns. These straining cases are contextualized by testing them in a demonstration mission, targeting an Earth-Moon L3 orbit. The study first establishes feasibility by automating impulsive burn maneuvers. However, some guidance algorithms will need more intensive commands, such as inertial pointing and angular rates. To validate this method, NN maneuver autonomy is applied to a finite burn model of the demonstration mission. The use of sequential, mission specific maneuvers provide an appropriate testbed to demonstrate the robustness of a NN trained on feasible perturbed states. Moreover, these scenarios provide preliminary proof-of-concept for fully autonomous missions that execute maneuvers without dependence upon explicit command uplinks. As a result, the technological advancement proposed in this work may significantly ease the strain on ground-based mission operations. This would enable complex and autonomous mission execution in cislunar and deep space regimes, filling a technology gap required to support future manned missions.

The kinetic origin of the fluid helicity—A symmetry in the kinetic phase space

Helicity, a topological degree that measures the winding and linking of vortex lines, is preserved by ideal (barotropic) fluid dynamics. In the context of the Hamiltonian description, the helicity is a Casimir invariant characterizing a foliation of the associated Poisson manifold. Casimir invariants are special invariants that depend on the Poisson bracket, not on the particular choice of the Hamiltonian. The total mass (or particle number) is another Casimir invariant, whose invariance guarantees the mass (particle) conservation (independent of any specific choice of the Hamiltonian). In a kinetic description (e.g., that of the Vlasov equation), the helicity is no longer an invariant (although the total mass remains a Casimir of the Vlasov’s Poisson algebra). The implication is that some “kinetic effect” can violate the constancy of the helicity. To elucidate how the helicity constraint emerges or submerges, we examine the fluid reduction of the Vlasov system; the fluid (macroscopic) system is a “sub-algebra” of the kinetic (microscopic) Vlasov system. In the Vlasov system, the helicity can be conserved if a special helicity symmetry condition holds. To put it another way, breaking helicity symmetry induces a change in the helicity. We delineate the geometrical meaning of helicity symmetry and show that for a special class of flows (the so-called epi-two-dimensional flows), the helicity symmetry is written as ∂γ = 0 for a coordinate γ of the configuration space.

Hamiltonian reduction of Vlasov–Maxwell to a dark slow manifold

In this work, we show that non-relativistic scaling of the collisionless Vlasov–Maxwell system implies the existence of a formal invariant slow manifold in the infinite-dimensional Vlasov–Maxwell phase space. Vlasov–Maxwell dynamics restricted to the slow manifold recovers the Vlasov–Poisson and Vlasov–Darwin models as low-order approximations, and provides higher-order corrections to the Vlasov–Darwin model more generally. The slow manifold may be interpreted to all orders in perturbation theory as a collection of formal Vlasov–Maxwell solutions that do not excite light waves, and are therefore ‘dark’. We provide a heuristic lower bound for the time interval over which Vlasov–Maxwell solutions initialized optimally near the slow manifold remain dark. We also show how the dynamics on the slow manifold naturally inherits a Hamiltonian structure from the underlying system. After expressing this structure in a simple form, we use it to identify a manifestly Hamiltonian correction to the Vlasov–Darwin model. The derivation of higher-order terms is reduced to computing the corrections of the system Hamiltonian restricted to the slow manifold.

Properties of the new $ \mathcal{N} $ = 1 AdS 4 vacuum of maximal supergravity

The recent comprehensive numerical study of critical points of the scalar potential of four-dimensional N = 8, SO(8) gauged supergravity using Machine Learning software in [1] has led to a discovery of a new N = 1 vacuum with a triality-invariant SO(3) symmetry. Guided by the numerical data for that point, we obtain a consistent SO(3) × Z 2 -invariant truncation of the N = 8 theory to an N = 1 supergravity with three chiral multiplets. Critical points of the truncated scalar potential include both the N = 1 point as well as two new non-supersymmetric and perturbatively unstable points not found by previous searches. Studying the structure of the submanifold of SO(3) × Z 2 -invariant supergravity scalars, we find that it has a simple interpretation as a submanifold of the 14-dimensional Z $3\atop{2}$ -invariant scalar manifold (SU(1, 1)/U(1)) 7 , for which we find a rather remarkable superpotential whose structure matches the single bit error correcting (7, 4) Hamming code. This 14-dimensional scalar manifold contains approximately one quarter of the known critical points. We also show that there exists a smooth supersymmetric domain wall which interpolates between the new N = 1 AdS4 solution and the maximally supersymmetric AdS4 vacuum. Using holography, this result indicates the existence of an N = 1 RG flow from the ABJM SCFT to a new strongly interacting conformal fixed point in the IR.

Mixed-mode oscillations in a three-timescale coupled Morris–Lecar system

Mixed-mode oscillations (MMOs) are complex oscillatory behaviors of multiple-timescale dynamical systems in which there is an alternation of large-amplitude and small-amplitude oscillations. It is well known that MMOs in two-timescale systems can arise either from a canard mechanism associated with folded node singularities or a delayed Andronov–Hopf bifurcation (DHB) of the fast subsystem. While MMOs in two-timescale systems have been extensively studied, less is known regarding MMOs emerging in three-timescale systems. In this work, we examine the mechanisms of MMOs in coupled Morris–Lecar neurons with three distinct timescales. We investigate two kinds of MMOs occurring in the presence of a singularity known as canard-delayed-Hopf (CDH) and in cases where CDH is absent. In both cases, we examine how features and mechanisms of MMOs vary with respect to variations in timescales. Our analysis reveals that MMOs supported by CDH demonstrate significantly stronger robustness than those in its absence. Moreover, we show that the mere presence of CDH does not guarantee the occurrence of MMOs. This work yields important insights into conditions under which the two separate mechanisms in two-timescale context, canard and DHB, can interact in a three-timescale setting and produce more robust MMOs, particularly against timescale variations.

ssys

`ssys` is a Python toolkit for exact algebraic transformation of ordinary differential equation (ODE) models into canonical S-system or Generalized Mass Action (GMA) form. Given a model in Antimony or SBML format, `ssys` produces a mathematically equivalent representation. The transformation introduces auxiliary variables as needed to decompose a broad class of nonlinearities into products of power-law terms. The recast is exact: the original and transformed systems have identical dynamics on the invariant constraint manifold defined by auxiliary variable definitions, given consistent initial conditions.

Diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds with boundary and exotic embeddings

Abstract We define family versions of the invariant of 4-manifolds with contact boundary due to Kronheimer and Mrowka and use these to detect exotic diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds with boundary. Further, we show the existence of the first example of exotic 3-spheres in a smooth closed 4-manifold with diffeomorphic complements.

Furthermore, this opens up several new avenues, which include a new formulation of q-series invariants of 3-manifolds in terms of affine Grassmannians and a generalization of Akutsu-Deguchi-Ohtsuki knot invariants.

New Directions in Asymptotically Stable Finite-dimensional Adaptive Control of Linear Distributed Parameter Systems

Distributed Parameter Systems (DPS), such as systems described by partial differential equations, require infinite-dimensional state space descriptions to correctly model their dynamical behavior. However, any adaptive control algorithm must be finite-dimensional in order to be implemented via on-line digital computers. Finite-dimensional adaptive control of linear DPS requires stability analysis of nonlinear, time-varying, infinite-dimensional systems. The structure of nonadaptive finite-dimensional control of linear DPS is summarized as it relates to the existence of limiting systems for adaptive control. Two candidate schemes for finite-dimensional adaptive control of DPS are described and critical issues in infinite-dimensional stability analysis are discussed, in particular, the invariance principle, center manifold theory, and relationships between input-output and internal stability.

Precision microstate counting for the entropy of wrapped M5-branes

We study the large N expansion of twisted partition functions of 3d N = 2 superconformal field theories arising from N M5-branes wrapped on a hyperbolic 3- manifold, M 3 . Via the 3d-3d correspondence, the partition functions of these 3d N = 2 superconformal field theories are related to simple topological invariants on the 3-manifold. The partition functions can be expressed using only classical and one-loop perturbative invariants of PSL(N, C) Chern-Simons theory around irreducible flat connections on M 3 . Using mathematical results on the asymptotics of the invariants, we compute the twisted partition functions in the large N limit including perturbative corrections to all orders in 1/N . Surprisingly, the perturbative expansion terminates at finite order. The leading part of the partition function is of order N 3 and agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the dual black holes. The subleading part, in particular the log N -terms in the field theory partition function is found to precisely match the one-loop quantum corrections in the dual eleven dimensional supergravity. The field theory results of other terms in 1/N provide a stringent prediction for higher order corrections in the holographic dual, which is M-theory.

Decorated TQFTs and their Hilbert spaces

We discuss topological quantum field theories that compute topological invariants which depend on additional structures (or decorations) on three-manifolds. The q-series invariant $\hat{Z}$(q) proposed by Gukov, Pei, Putrov, and Vafa is an example of such an invariant. We describe how to obtain these decorated invariants by cutting and gluing and make a proposal for Hilbert spaces that are assigned to two-dimensional surfaces in the $\hat{Z}$-TQFT.

4-manifolds and topological modular forms

We build a connection between topology of smooth 4-manifolds and the theory of topological modular forms by considering topologically twisted compactification of 6d (1, 0) theories on 4-manifolds with flavor symmetry backgrounds. The effective 2d theory has (0, 1) supersymmetry and, possibly, a residual flavor symmetry. The equivariant topological Witten genus of this 2d theory then produces a new invariant of the 4-manifold equipped with a principle bundle, valued in the ring of equivariant weakly holomorphic (topological) modular forms. We describe basic properties of this map and present a few simple examples. As a byproduct, we obtain some new results on ’t Hooft anomalies of 6d (1, 0) theories and a better understanding of the relation between 2d (0, 1) theories and TMF spectra.

3-Manifolds and VOA Characters

Abstract By studying the properties ofq-series$$\widehat{Z}$$ Z ^ -invariants, we develop a dictionary between 3-manifolds and vertex algebras. In particular, we generalize previously known entries in this dictionary to Lie groups of higher rank, to 3-manifolds with toral boundaries, and to BPS partition functions with line operators. This provides a new physical realization of logarithmic vertex algebras in the framework of the 3d-3d correspondence and opens new avenues for their future study. For example, we illustrate how invoking a knot-quiver correspondence for$$\widehat{Z}$$ Z ^ -invariants leads to many infinite families of new fermionic formulae for VOA characters.
